Abstract: This paper proposes the method combining artificial
neural network (ANN) with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to
implement the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) by controlling
the rotor speed of the wind generator. First, the measurements of wind
speed, rotor speed of wind power generator and output power of wind
power generator are applied to train artificial neural network and to
estimate the wind speed. Second, the method mentioned above is
applied to estimate and control the optimal rotor speed of the wind
turbine so as to output the maximum power. Finally, the result reveals
that the control system discussed in this paper extracts the maximum
output power of wind generator within the short duration even in the
conditions of wind speed and load impedance variation.
Abstract: This paper proposes an innovative methodology for
Acceptance Sampling by Variables, which is a particular category of
Statistical Quality Control dealing with the assurance of products
quality. Our contribution lies in the exploitation of machine learning
techniques to address the complexity and remedy the drawbacks of
existing approaches. More specifically, the proposed methodology
exploits Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to aid decision making
about the acceptance or rejection of an inspected sample. For any
type of inspection, ANNs are trained by data from corresponding
tables of a standard-s sampling plan schemes. Once trained, ANNs
can give closed-form solutions for any acceptance quality level and
sample size, thus leading to an automation of the reading of the
sampling plan tables, without any need of compromise with the
values of the specific standard chosen each time. The proposed
methodology provides enough flexibility to quality control engineers
during the inspection of their samples, allowing the consideration of
specific needs, while it also reduces the time and the cost required for
these inspections. Its applicability and advantages are demonstrated
through two numerical examples.
Abstract: The competitive learning is an adaptive process in
which the neurons in a neural network gradually become sensitive to
different input pattern clusters. The basic idea behind the Kohonen-s
Self-Organizing Feature Maps (SOFM) is competitive learning.
SOFM can generate mappings from high-dimensional signal spaces
to lower dimensional topological structures. The main features of this
kind of mappings are topology preserving, feature mappings and
probability distribution approximation of input patterns. To overcome
some limitations of SOFM, e.g., a fixed number of neural units and a
topology of fixed dimensionality, Growing Self-Organizing Neural
Network (GSONN) can be used. GSONN can change its topological
structure during learning. It grows by learning and shrinks by
forgetting. To speed up the training and convergence, a new variant
of GSONN, twin growing cell structures (TGCS) is presented here.
This paper first gives an introduction to competitive learning, SOFM
and its variants. Then, we discuss some GSONN with fixed
dimensionality, which include growing cell structures, its variants
and the author-s model: TGCS. It is ended with some testing results
comparison and conclusions.
Abstract: This paper aims to develop a NOx emission model of
an acid gas incinerator using Nelder-Mead least squares support
vector regression (LS-SVR). Malaysia DOE is actively imposing the
Clean Air Regulation to mandate the installation of analytical
instrumentation known as Continuous Emission Monitoring System
(CEMS) to report emission level online to DOE . As a hardware
based analyzer, CEMS is expensive, maintenance intensive and often
unreliable. Therefore, software predictive technique is often
preferred and considered as a feasible alternative to replace the
CEMS for regulatory compliance. The LS-SVR model is built based
on the emissions from an acid gas incinerator that operates in a LNG
Complex. Simulated Annealing (SA) is first used to determine the
initial hyperparameters which are then further optimized based on the
performance of the model using Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm.
The LS-SVR model is shown to outperform a benchmark model
based on backpropagation neural networks (BPNN) in both training
and testing data.
Abstract: We board the problem of creating a seismic alert
system, based upon artificial neural networks, trained by using the
well-known back-propagation and genetic algorithms, in order to emit
the alarm for the population located into a specific city, about an
eminent earthquake greater than 4.5 Richter degrees, and avoiding
disasters and human loses. In lieu of using the propagation wave, we
employed the magnitude of the earthquake, to establish a correlation
between the recorded magnitudes from a controlled area and the city,
where we want to emit the alarm. To measure the accuracy of the
posed method, we use a database provided by CIRES, which contains
the records of 2500 quakes incoming from the State of Guerrero
and Mexico City. Particularly, we performed the proposed method to
generate an issue warning in Mexico City, employing the magnitudes
recorded in the State of Guerrero.
Abstract: In this paper, an improved technique for contingency
ranking using artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. The
proposed approach is based on multi-layer perceptrons trained by
backpropagation to contingency analysis. Severity indices in dynamic
stability assessment are presented. These indices are based on the
concept of coherency and three dot products of the system variables.
It is well known that some indices work better than others for a
particular power system. This paper along with test results using
several different systems, demonstrates that combination of indices
with ANN provides better ranking than a single index. The presented
results are obtained through the use of power system simulation
(PSS/E) and MATLAB 6.5 software.
Abstract: For most image fusion algorithms separate
relationship by pixels in the image and treat them more or less
independently. In addition, they have to be adjusted different
parameters in different time or weather. In this paper, we propose a
region–based image fusion which combines aspects of feature and
pixel-level fusion method to replace only by pixel. The basic idea is
to segment far infrared image only and to add information of each
region from segmented image to visual image respectively. Then we
determine different fused parameters according different region. At
last, we adopt artificial neural network to deal with the problems of
different time or weather, because the relationship between fused
parameters and image features are nonlinear. It render the fused
parameters can be produce automatically according different states.
The experimental results present the method we proposed indeed
have good adaptive capacity with automatic determined fused
parameters. And the architecture can be used for lots of applications.
Abstract: It is well known that a linear dynamic system including
a delay will exhibit limit cycle oscillations when a bang-bang sensor
is used in the feedback loop of a PID controller. A similar behaviour
occurs when a delayed feedback signal is used to train a neural
network. This paper develops a method of predicting this behaviour
by linearizing the system, which can be shown to behave in a manner
similar to an integral controller. Using this procedure, it is possible
to predict the characteristics of the neural network driven limit cycle
to varying degrees of accuracy, depending on the information known
about the system. An application is also presented: the intelligent
control of a spark ignition engine.
Abstract: Prediction of viscosity of natural gas is an important parameter in the energy industries such as natural gas storage and transportation. In this study viscosity of different compositions of natural gas is modeled by using an artificial neural network (ANN) based on back-propagation method. A reliable database including more than 3841 experimental data of viscosity for testing and training of ANN is used. The designed neural network can predict the natural gas viscosity using pseudo-reduced pressure and pseudo-reduced temperature with AARD% of 0.221. The accuracy of designed ANN has been compared to other published empirical models. The comparison indicates that the proposed method can provide accurate results.
Abstract: This research presented in this paper is an on-going
project of an application of neural network and fuzzy models to
evaluate the sociological factors which affect the educational
performance of the students in Sri Lanka. One of its major goals is to
prepare the grounds to device a counseling tool which helps these
students for a better performance at their examinations, especially at
their G.C.E O/L (General Certificate of Education-Ordinary Level)
examination. Closely related sociological factors are collected as raw
data and the noise of these data are filtered through the fuzzy
interface and the supervised neural network is being utilized to
recognize the performance patterns against the chosen social factors.
Abstract: Gene, principal unit of inheritance, is an ordered
sequence of nucleotides. The genes of eukaryotic organisms include
alternating segments of exons and introns. The region of
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) within a gene containing instructions
for coding a protein is called exon. On the other hand, non-coding
regions called introns are another part of DNA that regulates gene
expression by removing from the messenger Ribonucleic acid (RNA)
in a splicing process. This paper proposes to determine splice
junctions that are exon-intron boundaries by analyzing DNA
sequences. A splice junction can be either exon-intron (EI) or intron
exon (IE). Because of the popularity and compatibility of the
artificial neural network (ANN) in genetic fields; various ANN
models are applied in this research. Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP),
Radial Basis Function (RBF) and Generalized Regression Neural
Networks (GRNN) are used to analyze and detect the splice junctions
of gene sequences. 10-fold cross validation is used to demonstrate
the accuracy of networks. The real performances of these networks
are found by applying Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC)
analysis.
Abstract: In this article we are going to discuss the improvement
of the multi classes- classification problem using multi layer
Perceptron. The considered approach consists in breaking down the
n-class problem into two-classes- subproblems. The training of each
two-class subproblem is made independently; as for the phase of test,
we are going to confront a vector that we want to classify to all two
classes- models, the elected class will be the strongest one that won-t
lose any competition with the other classes. Rates of recognition
gotten with the multi class-s approach by two-class-s decomposition
are clearly better that those gotten by the simple multi class-s
approach.
Abstract: This research work is aimed at speech recognition
using scaly neural networks. A small vocabulary of 11 words were
established first, these words are “word, file, open, print, exit, edit,
cut, copy, paste, doc1, doc2". These chosen words involved with
executing some computer functions such as opening a file, print
certain text document, cutting, copying, pasting, editing and exit.
It introduced to the computer then subjected to feature extraction
process using LPC (linear prediction coefficients). These features are
used as input to an artificial neural network in speaker dependent
mode. Half of the words are used for training the artificial neural
network and the other half are used for testing the system; those are
used for information retrieval.
The system components are consist of three parts, speech
processing and feature extraction, training and testing by using neural
networks and information retrieval.
The retrieve process proved to be 79.5-88% successful, which is
quite acceptable, considering the variation to surrounding, state of
the person, and the microphone type.
Abstract: Image Compression using Artificial Neural Networks
is a topic where research is being carried out in various directions
towards achieving a generalized and economical network.
Feedforward Networks using Back propagation Algorithm adopting
the method of steepest descent for error minimization is popular and
widely adopted and is directly applied to image compression.
Various research works are directed towards achieving quick
convergence of the network without loss of quality of the restored
image. In general the images used for compression are of different
types like dark image, high intensity image etc. When these images
are compressed using Back-propagation Network, it takes longer
time to converge. The reason for this is, the given image may
contain a number of distinct gray levels with narrow difference with
their neighborhood pixels. If the gray levels of the pixels in an image
and their neighbors are mapped in such a way that the difference in
the gray levels of the neighbors with the pixel is minimum, then
compression ratio as well as the convergence of the network can be
improved. To achieve this, a Cumulative distribution function is
estimated for the image and it is used to map the image pixels. When
the mapped image pixels are used, the Back-propagation Neural
Network yields high compression ratio as well as it converges
quickly.

It also explains how vectors could be built and then applied to the input of any analysis stage. For analyzing, the work deploys the Feedforward-Back propagation neural network to act as misuse intrusion detection system. It uses ten types if attacks as example for training and testing the neural network. It explains how the packets are analyzed to extract features. The work shows how selecting the right features, building correct vectors and how correct identification of the training methods with nodes- number in hidden layer of any neural network affecting the accuracy of system. In addition, the work shows how to get values of optimal weights and use them to initialize the Artificial Neural Network.
Abstract: End milling process is one of the common metal
cutting operations used for machining parts in manufacturing
industry. It is usually performed at the final stage in manufacturing a
product and surface roughness of the produced job plays an
important role. In general, the surface roughness affects wear
resistance, ductility, tensile, fatigue strength, etc., for machined parts
and cannot be neglected in design. In the present work an
experimental investigation of end milling of aluminium alloy with
carbide tool is carried out and the effect of different cutting
parameters on the response are studied with three-dimensional
surface plots. An artificial neural network (ANN) is used to establish
the relationship between the surface roughness and the input cutting
parameters (i.e., spindle speed, feed, and depth of cut). The Matlab
ANN toolbox works on feed forward back propagation algorithm is
used for modeling purpose. 3-12-1 network structure having
minimum average prediction error found as best network architecture
for predicting surface roughness value. The network predicts surface
roughness for unseen data and found that the result/prediction is
better. For desired surface finish of the component to be produced
there are many different combination of cutting parameters are
available. The optimum cutting parameter for obtaining desired
surface finish, to maximize tool life is predicted. The methodology is
demonstrated, number of problems are solved and algorithm is coded
in Matlab®.
Abstract: Many studies have focused on the nonlinear analysis
of electroencephalography (EEG) mainly for the characterization of
epileptic brain states. It is assumed that at least two states of the
epileptic brain are possible: the interictal state characterized by a
normal apparently random, steady-state EEG ongoing activity; and
the ictal state that is characterized by paroxysmal occurrence of
synchronous oscillations and is generally called in neurology, a
seizure.
The spatial and temporal dynamics of the epileptogenic process is
still not clear completely especially the most challenging aspects of
epileptology which is the anticipation of the seizure. Despite all the
efforts we still don-t know how and when and why the seizure
occurs. However actual studies bring strong evidence that the
interictal-ictal state transition is not an abrupt phenomena. Findings
also indicate that it is possible to detect a preseizure phase.
Our approach is to use the neural network tool to detect interictal
states and to predict from those states the upcoming seizure ( ictal
state). Analysis of the EEG signal based on neural networks is used
for the classification of EEG as either seizure or non-seizure. By
applying prediction methods it will be possible to predict the
upcoming seizure from non-seizure EEG.
We will study the patients admitted to the epilepsy monitoring
unit for the purpose of recording their seizures. Preictal, ictal, and
post ictal EEG recordings are available on such patients for analysis
The system will be induced by taking a body of samples then
validate it using another. Distinct from the two first ones a third body
of samples is taken to test the network for the achievement of
optimum prediction. Several methods will be tried 'Backpropagation
ANN' and 'RBF'.
Abstract: Cosmic showers, during the transit through space, produce
sub - products as a result of interactions with the intergalactic
or interstellar medium which after entering earth generate secondary
particles called Extensive Air Shower (EAS). Detection and analysis
of High Energy Particle Showers involve a plethora of theoretical and
experimental works with a host of constraints resulting in inaccuracies
in measurements. Therefore, there exist a necessity to develop a
readily available system based on soft-computational approaches
which can be used for EAS analysis. This is due to the fact that soft
computational tools such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN)s can be
trained as classifiers to adapt and learn the surrounding variations. But
single classifiers fail to reach optimality of decision making in many
situations for which Multiple Classifier System (MCS) are preferred
to enhance the ability of the system to make decisions adjusting
to finer variations. This work describes the formation of an MCS
using Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), Recurrent Neural Network
(RNN) and Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) with data inputs
from correlation mapping Self Organizing Map (SOM) blocks and
the output optimized by another SOM. The results show that the setup
can be adopted for real time practical applications for prediction
of primary energy and location of EAS from density values captured
using detectors in a circular grid.
Abstract: The pipe inspection operation is the difficult detective
performance. Almost applications are mainly relies on a manual
recognition of defective areas that have carried out detection by an
engineer. Therefore, an automation process task becomes a necessary
in order to avoid the cost incurred in such a manual process. An
automated monitoring method to obtain a complete picture of the
sewer condition is proposed in this work. The focus of the research is
the automated identification and classification of discontinuities in
the internal surface of the pipe. The methodology consists of several
processing stages including image segmentation into the potential
defect regions and geometrical characteristic features. Automatic
recognition and classification of pipe defects are carried out by means
of using an artificial neural network technique (ANN) based on
Radial Basic Function (RBF). Experiments in a realistic environment
have been conducted and results are presented.
Abstract: Cluster analysis is the name given to a diverse collection of techniques that can be used to classify objects (e.g. individuals, quadrats, species etc). While Kohonen's Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) or Self-Organizing Map (SOM) networks have been successfully applied as a classification tool to various problem domains, including speech recognition, image data compression, image or character recognition, robot control and medical diagnosis, its potential as a robust substitute for clustering analysis remains relatively unresearched. SOM networks combine competitive learning with dimensionality reduction by smoothing the clusters with respect to an a priori grid and provide a powerful tool for data visualization. In this paper, SOM is used for creating a toroidal mapping of two-dimensional lattice to perform cluster analysis on results of a chemical analysis of wines produced in the same region in Italy but derived from three different cultivators, referred to as the “wine recognition data" located in the University of California-Irvine database. The results are encouraging and it is believed that SOM would make an appealing and powerful decision-support system tool for clustering tasks and for data visualization.
