Abstract: The Purdue University Research Reactor-1 (PUR-1) is a 10 kWth pool-type research reactor located at Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus. The reactor was recently upgraded to use entirely digital instrumentation and control systems. However, currently, there is no automated control system to regulate the power in the reactor. We propose a fuzzy logic controller as a form of digital twin to complement the existing digital instrumentation system to monitor and stabilize power control using existing experimental data. This work assesses the feasibility of a power controller based on a Fuzzy Rule-Based System (FRBS) by modelling and simulation with a MATLAB algorithm. The controller uses power error and reactor period as inputs and generates reactivity insertion as output. The reactivity insertion is then converted to control rod height using a logistic function based on information from the recorded experimental reactor control rod data. To test the capability of the proposed fuzzy controller, a point-kinetic reactor model is utilized based on the actual PUR-1 operation conditions and a Monte Carlo N-Particle simulation result of the core to numerically compute the neutronics parameters of reactor behavior. The Point Kinetic Equation (PKE) was employed to model dynamic characteristics of the research reactor since it explains the interactions between the spatial and time varying input and output variables efficiently. The controller is demonstrated computationally using various cases: startup, power maneuver, and shutdown. From the test results, it can be proved that the implemented fuzzy controller can satisfactorily regulate the reactor power to follow demand power without compromising nuclear safety measures.
Abstract: Data-driven business models are more typical for established businesses than early-stage startups that strive to penetrate a market. This paper provided an extensive discussion on the principles of data analytics for early-stage digital entrepreneurial businesses. Here, we developed data-driven decision-making (DDDM) framework that applies to startups prone to multifaceted barriers in the form of poor data access, technical and financial constraints, to state some. The startup DDDM framework proposed in this paper is novel in its form encompassing startup data analytics enablers and metrics aligning with startups' business models ranging from customer-centric product development to servitization which is the future of modern digital entrepreneurship.
Abstract: Technological innovation plays a crucial role in virtual healthcare services. A growing number of telehealth platforms are concentrating on using digital tools to improve the quality and availability of care. As a result, telehealth represents an opportunity to redesign the way health services are delivered. The research objective is to discover a new business model for digital health services and related industries to participate with telehealth solutions. The business opportunity is valuable for healthcare investors as a startup company to further investigations or implement the telehealth platform. The paper presents a digital healthcare business model and business opportunities to related industries. These include digital healthcare services extending from a traditional business model and use cases of business opportunities to related industries. Although there are enormous business opportunities, telehealth is still challenging due to the patient adaption and digital transformation process within a healthcare organization.
Abstract: The COVID-19 causes a worldwide crisis and has an impact in every dimension of the economy. Organizations with the ability to adapt to new developments and which innovate solutions for the disrupted world during and after the Corona crises have the opportunity to not only survive the crisis but rather to use new trends to implement new business models and gain advantage. In this context, startups seem to have better opportunities to manage the Corona crisis through their innovation-based nature. The main result of this paper is the understanding that by applying a startup orientated innovation (SOCI) strategy, established companies can be motivated to meet the challenge of COVID-19 in a similar way like startups. This result can be achieved by describing the role of innovation and a SOCI strategy as helpful methods for organizations to meet the coming challenges during and after the COVID-19 epidemics. In addition to this, this paper presents a practical application of SOCI through the PANDA approach of the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Germany and discuss it in the context of COVID-19 as an exemplary successful real-world implementation of SOCI strategy.
Abstract: Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) plays an important
role in volt/var control of synchronous condenser (SC) in power
systems. Test AVR performance in steady-state and dynamic
conditions in real grid is expensive, low efficiency, and hard to
achieve. To address this issue, we implement hardware-in-the-loop
(HiL) test for the AVR of SC to test the steady-state and dynamic
performances of AVR in different operating conditions. Startup
procedure of the system and voltage set point changes are studied to
evaluate the AVR hardware response. Overexcitation, underexcitation,
and AVR set point loss are tested to compare the performance of
SC with the AVR hardware and that of simulation. The comparative
results demonstrate how AVR will work in a real system. The results
show HiL test is an effective approach for testing devices before
deployment and is able to parameterize the controller with lower
cost, higher efficiency, and more flexibility.
Abstract: With the increase in popularity of mobile devices,
new and varied forms of malware have emerged. Consequently,
the organizations for cyberdefense have echoed the need to deploy
more effective defensive schemes adapted to the challenges posed
by these recent monitoring environments. In order to contribute to
their development, this paper presents a malware detection strategy
for mobile devices based on sequence alignment algorithms. Unlike
the previous proposals, only the system calls performed during the
startup of applications are studied. In this way, it is possible to
efficiently study in depth, the sequences of system calls executed
by the applications just downloaded from app stores, and initialize
them in a secure and isolated environment. As demonstrated in the
performed experimentation, most of the analyzed malicious activities
were successfully identified in their boot processes.
Abstract: After the measurement uncertainty recapture (MUR) power uprates, Kuosheng nuclear power plant (NPP) was uprated the power from 2894 MWt to 2943 MWt. For power upgrade, several codes (e.g., TRACE, RELAP5, etc.) were applied to assess the safety of Kuosheng NPP. Hence, the main work of this research is to establish a RELAP5/MOD3.3 model of Kuosheng NPP with SNAP interface. The establishment of RELAP5/SNAP model was referred to the FSAR, training documents, and TRACE model which has been developed and verified before. After completing the model establishment, the startup test scenarios would be applied to the RELAP5/SNAP model. With comparing the startup test data and TRACE analysis results, the applicability of RELAP5/SNAP model would be assessed.
Abstract: The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment,
located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of
INFN, searches for 0νββ of 76Ge. Germanium diodes enriched to
∼ 86 % in the double beta emitter 76Ge(enrGe) are exposed being
both source and detectors of 0νββ decay. Neutrinoless double beta
decay is considered a powerful probe to address still open issues
in the neutrino sector of the (beyond) Standard Model of particle
Physics. Since 2013, just after the completion of the first part of its
experimental program (Phase I), the GERDA setup has been upgraded
to perform its next step in the 0νββ searches (Phase II). Phase II aims
to reach a sensitivity to the 0νββ decay half-life larger than 1026 yr
in about 3 years of physics data taking. This exposing a detector
mass of about 35 kg of enrGe and with a background index of about
10^−3 cts/(keV·kg·yr). One of the main new implementations is the
liquid argon scintillation light read-out, to veto those events that only
partially deposit their energy both in Ge and in the surrounding LAr.
In this paper, the GERDA Phase II expected goals, the upgrade work
and few selected features from the 2015 commissioning and 2016
calibration runs will be presented. The main Phase I achievements
will be also reviewed.
Abstract: Transient simulation of the hydrogen-assisted self-ignition of propane-air mixtures were carried out in platinum-coated micro-channels from ambient cold-start conditions, using a two-dimensional model with reduced-order reaction schemes, heat conduction in the solid walls, convection and surface radiation heat transfer. The self-ignition behavior of hydrogen-propane mixed fuel is analyzed and compared with the heated feed case. Simulations indicate that hydrogen can successfully cause self-ignition of propane-air mixtures in catalytic micro-channels with a 0.2 mm gap size, eliminating the need for startup devices. The minimum hydrogen composition for propane self-ignition is found to be in the range of 0.8-2.8% (on a molar basis), and increases with increasing wall thermal conductivity, and decreasing inlet velocity or propane composition. Higher propane-air ratio results in earlier ignition. The ignition characteristics of hydrogen-assisted propane qualitatively resemble the selectively inlet feed preheating mode. Transient response of the mixed hydrogen- propane fuel reveals sequential ignition of propane followed by hydrogen. Front-end propane ignition is observed in all cases. Low wall thermal conductivities cause earlier ignition of the mixed hydrogen-propane fuel, subsequently resulting in low exit temperatures. The transient-state behavior of this micro-scale system is described, and the startup time and minimization of hydrogen usage are discussed.
Abstract: This paper presents a 5-V to 30-V current-mode boost converter for powering the drive circuit of a micro-electro-mechanical sensor. The design of a transconductance amplifier and an integrated current sensing circuit are presented. In addition, essential building blocks for power-on protection such as a soft-start and clamp block and supply and clock ready block are discussed in details. The chip is fabricated in a 0.18-μm CMOS process. Measurement results show that the soft-start and clamp block can effectively limit the inrush current during startup and protect the boost converter from startup failure.
Abstract: The objective of this study is to uncover the basic business-forces that necessitated the survival and sustainable performance of the medium scale contractors in the South African construction market. This study is essential as it set to contribute towards long-term strategic solutions for combating the incessant failure of start-ups construction organizations within South African. The study used a qualitative research methodology; as the most appropriate approach to elicit and understand, and uncover the phenomena that are basic business-forces for the active contractors in the market. The study also adopted a phenomenological study approach; and in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 medium scale contractors in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, between months of August to October 2015. This allowed for an in-depth understanding of the critical and basic business-forces that influenced their survival and performance beyond the first five years of business operation. Findings of the study showed that for potential contractors (startups), to survival in the competitive business environment such as construction industry, they must possess the basic business-forces. These forces are educational knowledge in construction and business management related disciplines, adequate industrial experiences, competencies and capabilities to delivery excellent services and products as well as embracing the spirit of entrepreneurship. Convincingly, it can be concluded that the strategic approach to minimize the endless failure of startups construction businesses; the potential construction contractors must endeavoring to access and acquire the basic educationally knowledge, training and qualification; need to acquire industrial experiences in collaboration with required competencies, capabilities and entrepreneurship acumen. Without these basic business-forces as been discovered in this study, the majority of the contractors gaining entrance in the market will find it difficult to develop and grow a competitive and sustainable construction organization in South Africa.
Abstract: In this work, two fermentations at different
temperatures (25 and 30ºC), with cell recycling, were accomplished
to produce ethanol, using a mix of commercial substrates, xylose
(70%) and glucose (30%), as organic source for Scheffersomyces
stipitis. Five consecutive fermentations of 80 g L-1 (1º, 2º and 3º
recycles), 96 g L-1 (4º recycle) and 120 g L-1 (5º recycle)reduced
sugars led to a final maximum ethanol concentration of 17.2 and 34.5
g L-1, at 25 and 30ºC, respectively. Glucose was the preferred
substrate; moreover xylose startup degradation was initiated after a
remaining glucose presence in the medium. Results showed that yeast
acid treatment, performed before each cycle, provided improvements
on cell viability, accompanied by ethanol productivity of 2.16 g L-1 h-
1 at 30ºC. A maximum 36% of xylose was retained in the
fermentation medium and after five-cycle fermentation an ethanol
yield of 0.43 g ethanol/g sugars was observed. S. stipitis fermentation
capacity and tolerance showed better results at 30ºC with 83.4% of
theoretical yield referenced on initial biomass.
Abstract: In our research we aimed to test a managerial
approach for the fuzzy front end (FFE) of innovation by creating
controlled experiment/ business case in a breakthrough innovation
development. The experiment was in the sport industry and covered
all aspects of the customer discovery stage from ideation to
prototyping followed by patent application. In the paper we describe
and analyze mile stones, tasks, management challenges, decisions
made to create the break through innovation, evaluate overall
managerial efficiency that was at the considered FFE stage.
We set managerial outcome of the FFE stage as a valid product
concept in hand. In our paper we introduce hypothetical construct
“Q-factor” that helps us in the experiment to distinguish quality of
FFE outcomes.
The experiment simulated for entrepreneur the FFE of innovation
and put on his shoulders responsibility for the outcome of valid
product concept. While developing managerial approach to reach the
outcome there was a decision to look on product concept from the
cognitive psychology and cognitive science point of view. This view
helped us to develop the profile of a person whose projection (mental
representation) of a new product could optimize for a manager or
entrepreneur FFE activities. In the experiment this profile was tested
to develop breakthrough innovation for swimmers. Following the
managerial approach the product concept was created to help
swimmers to feel/sense water. The working prototype was developed
to estimate the product concept validity and value added effect for
customers.
Based on feedback from coachers and swimmers there were strong
positive effect that gave high value for customers, and for the
experiment – the valid product concept being developed by proposed
managerial approach for the FFE.
In conclusions there is a suggestion of managerial approach that
was derived from experiment.

Abstract: In this paper the vibration of a synchronous belt drive
during start-up is analyzed and discussed. Besides considering the
belt elasticity, the model here proposed also takes into consideration
the electromagnetic response of the DC motor. The solution of the
motion equations is obtained by means of the modal analysis in
state space, which allows to obtain the decoupling of all equations,
without introducing the hypothesis of proportional damping. The
mathematical model of the transmission and the solution algorithms
have been implemented within a computing software that allows the
user to simulate the dynamics of the system and to evaluate the effects
due to the elasticity of the belt branches and to the electromagnetic
behavior of the DC motor. In order to show the details of the
calculation procedure, the paper presents a case study developed with
the aid of the above-mentioned software.
Abstract: In this paper, for detection of inclined eccentricity in an induction motor, time–frequency analysis of the stator startup current is carried out. For this purpose, the discrete wavelet transform is used. Data are obtained from simulations, using winding function approach. The results show the validity of the approach for detecting the fault and discriminating with respect to other faults.
Abstract: Vibration analysis of most critical equipment is considered as one of the most challenging activities in preventive maintenance. Utilities are heart of the process in big industrial plants like petrochemical zones. Abstract: All-to-all personalized communication, also known as complete exchange, is one of the most dense communication patterns in parallel computing. In this paper, we propose new indirect algorithms for complete exchange on all-port ring and torus. The new algorithms fully utilize all communication links and transmit messages along shortest paths to completely achieve the theoretical lower bounds on message transmission, which have not be achieved among other existing indirect algorithms. For 2D r × c ( r % c ) all-port torus, the algorithm has time complexities of optimal transmission cost and O(c) message startup cost. In addition, the proposed algorithms accommodate non-power-of-two tori where the number of nodes in each dimension needs not be power-of-two or square. Finally, the algorithms are conceptually simple and symmetrical for every message and every node so that they can be easily implemented and achieve the optimum in practice.
