Abstract: Urban Heat Island (UHI) is found more pronounced as a prominent urban environmental concern in developing cities. To study the UHI effect in the Indian context, the Nagpur urban area has been explored in this paper using Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images through Remote Sensing and GIS techniques. This paper intends to study the effect of LU/LC pattern on daytime Land Surface Temperature (LST) variation, contributing UHI formation within the Nagpur Urban area. Supervised LU/LC area classification was carried to study urban Change detection using ENVI 5. Change detection has been studied by carrying Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to understand the proportion of vegetative cover with respect to built-up ratio. Detection of spectral radiance from the thermal band of satellite images was processed to calibrate LST. Specific representative areas on the basis of urban built-up and vegetation classification were selected for observation of point LST. The entire Nagpur urban area shows that, as building density increases with decrease in vegetation cover, LST increases, thereby causing the UHI effect. UHI intensity has gradually increased by 0.7°C from 2000 to 2006; however, a drastic increase has been observed with difference of 1.8°C during the period 2006 to 2013. Within the Nagpur urban area, the UHI effect was formed due to increase in building density and decrease in vegetative cover.
Abstract: Ancient Thai perfumed powder was used as a fragrance for clothing, food, and the body. Plant-based natural Thai perfume products are known as Pang-Rum. The objective of this study was to evaluate the stability of essential oils after six months of incubation. The chemical compositions were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), in terms of the qualitative composition of the isolated essential oil. The isolation of the essential oil of natural products by incubate sample for 5 min at 40 ºC is described. The volatile components were identified by percentage of total peak areas comparing their retention times of GC chromatograph with NIST mass spectral library. The results show no significant difference in the seven chromatograms of perfumed powder (Pang-Rum) both with binder and without binder. Further identification was done by GC-MS. Some components of Pang-Rum with/without binder were changed by temperature and time.
Abstract: Landcover classification using automated classification techniques, while employing remotely sensed multi-spectral imagery, is one of the promising areas of research. Different land conditions at different time are captured through satellite and monitored by applying different classification algorithms in specific environment. In this paper, a SPOT-5 image provided by SUPARCO has been studied and classified in Environment for Visual Interpretation (ENVI), a tool widely used in remote sensing. Then, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classification technique is used to detect the land cover changes in Abbottabad district. Obtained results are compared with a pixel based Distance classifier. The results show that ANN gives the better overall accuracy of 99.20% and Kappa coefficient value of 0.98 over the Mahalanobis Distance Classifier.
Abstract: An algebraic framework for processing graph signals
axiomatically designates the graph adjacency matrix as the shift
operator. In this setup, we often encounter a problem wherein we
know the filtered output and the filter coefficients, and need to
find out the input graph signal. Solution to this problem using
direct approach requires O(N3) operations, where N is the number
of vertices in graph. In this paper, we adapt the spectral graph
partitioning method for partitioning of graphs and use it to reduce
the computational cost of the filtering problem. We use the example
of denoising of the temperature data to illustrate the efficacy of the
approach.
Abstract: The present paper expands details and confirms the transition mechanism between two subsequent polygonal patterns of the hollow-core vortex. Using power spectral analysis, we confirm in this work that the transition from any N-gon to (N+1)-gon pattern observed within a hollow-core vortex of shallow rotating flows occurs in two steps. The regime was quasi-periodic before the frequencies lock (synchronization). The ratios of locking frequencies were found to be equal to (N-1)/N.
Abstract: This paper investigates seismic soil-pile interaction using the Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation (BNWF) approach. Three soil types are considered to cover all the possible responses, as well as nonlinear site response analysis using finite element method in OpenSees platform. Excitations at each elevation that are output of the site response analysis are used as the input excitation to the soil pile system implementing multi-support excitation method. Spectral intensities of acceleration show that the extent of the response in sand is more severe than that of clay, in addition, increasing the PGA of ground strong motion will affect the sandy soil more, in comparison with clayey medium, which is an indicator of the sensitivity of soil-pile systems in sandy soil.
Abstract: Fishery lights on the surface could be detected by the Day and Night Band (DNB) of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP). The DNB covers the spectral range of 500 to 900 nm and realized a higher sensitivity. The DNB has a difficulty of identification of fishing lights from lunar lights reflected by clouds, which affects observations for the half of the month. Fishery lights and lights of the surface are identified from lunar lights reflected by clouds by a method using the DNB and the infrared band, where the detection limits are defined as a function of the brightness temperature with a difference from the maximum temperature for each level of DNB radiance and with the contrast of DNB radiance against the background radiance. Fishery boats or structures on islands could be detected by the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) on the polar orbit satellites using the reflected microwave by the surface reflecting targets. The SAR has a difficulty of tradeoff between spatial resolution and coverage while detecting the small targets like fishery boats. A distribution of fishery boats and island activities were detected by the scan-SAR narrow mode of Radarsat-2, which covers 300 km by 300 km with various combinations of polarizations. The fishing boats were detected as a single pixel of highly scattering targets with the scan-SAR narrow mode of which spatial resolution is 30 m. As the look angle dependent scattering signals exhibits the significant differences, the standard deviations of scattered signals for each look angles were taken into account as a threshold to identify the signal from fishing boats and structures on the island from background noise. It was difficult to validate the detected targets by DNB with SAR data because of time lag of observations for 6 hours between midnight by DNB and morning or evening by SAR. The temporal changes of island activities were detected as a change of mean intensity of DNB for circular area for a certain scale of activities. The increase of DNB mean intensity was corresponding to the beginning of dredging and the change of intensity indicated the ending of reclamation and following constructions of facilities.
Abstract: With the development of HyperSpectral Imagery
(HSI) technology, the spectral resolution of HSI became denser,
which resulted in large number of spectral bands, high correlation
between neighboring, and high data redundancy. However, the
semantic interpretation is a challenging task for HSI analysis
due to the high dimensionality and the high correlation of the
different spectral bands. In fact, this work presents a dimensionality
reduction approach that allows to overcome the different issues
improving the semantic interpretation of HSI. Therefore, in order
to preserve the spatial information, the Tensor Locality Preserving
Projection (TLPP) has been applied to transform the original HSI.
In the second step, knowledge has been extracted based on the
adjacency graph to describe the different pixels. Based on the
transformation matrix using TLPP, a weighted matrix has been
constructed to rank the different spectral bands based on their
contribution score. Thus, the relevant bands have been adaptively
selected based on the weighted matrix. The performance of the
presented approach has been validated by implementing several
experiments, and the obtained results demonstrate the efficiency
of this approach compared to various existing dimensionality
reduction techniques. Also, according to the experimental results,
we can conclude that this approach can adaptively select the
relevant spectral improving the semantic interpretation of HSI.
Abstract: Understanding the statistics of non-isotropic scattering multipath channels that fade randomly with respect to time, frequency, and space in a mobile environment is very crucial for the accurate detection of received signals in wireless and cellular communication systems. In this paper, we derive stochastic models for the probability density function (PDF) of the shift in the carrier frequency caused by the Doppler Effect on the received illuminating signal in the presence of a dominant line of sight. Our derivation is based on a generalized Clarke’s and a two-wave partially developed scattering models, where the statistical distribution of the frequency shift is shown to be consistent with the power spectral density of the Doppler shifted signal.
Abstract: Recognizing and controlling vocal registers during
singing is a difficult task for beginner vocalist. It requires among
others identifying which part of natural resonators is being used
when a sound propagates through the body. Thus, an application
has been designed allowing for sound recording, automatic vocal
register recognition (VRR), and a graphical user interface providing
real-time visualization of the signal and recognition results. Six
spectral features are determined for each time frame and passed to the
support vector machine classifier yielding a binary decision on the
head or chest register assignment of the segment. The classification
training and testing data have been recorded by ten professional
female singers (soprano, aged 19-29) performing sounds for both
chest and head register. The classification accuracy exceeded 93%
in each of various validation schemes. Apart from a hard two-class
clustering, the support vector classifier returns also information on
the distance between particular feature vector and the discrimination
hyperplane in a feature space. Such an information reflects the level
of certainty of the vocal register classification in a fuzzy way. Thus,
the designed recognition and training application is able to assess and
visualize the continuous trend in singing in a user-friendly graphical
mode providing an easy way to control the vocal emission.
Abstract: Remote sensing techniques have emerged as an asset for various geological studies. Satellite images obtained by different sensors contain plenty of information related to the terrain. Digital image processing further helps in customized ways for the prospecting of minerals. In this study, an attempt has been made to map the hydrothermally altered zones using multispectral and hyperspectral datasets of South East Rajasthan. Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Hyperion (Level1R) dataset have been processed to generate different Band Ratio Composites (BRCs). For this study, ASTER derived BRCs were generated to delineate the alteration zones, gossans, abundant clays and host rocks. ASTER and Hyperion images were further processed to extract mineral end members and classified mineral maps have been produced using Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) method. Results were validated with the geological map of the area which shows positive agreement with the image processing outputs. Thus, this study concludes that the band ratios and image processing in combination play significant role in demarcation of alteration zones which may provide pathfinders for mineral prospecting studies.
Abstract: Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most extensively studied material among the conducting polymers due to its simple synthesis by chemical and electrochemical routes. PANIs have advantages of chemical stability and high conductivity making their commercial applications quite attractive. However, to our knowledge, very little work has been reported on the tensile strength properties of templated PANIs processed with polyvinyl alcohol and also, detailed study has not been carried out. We have investigated the effect of small molecule and polymers as templates on PANI. Stable aqueous colloidal suspensions of trisodium citrate (TSC), poly(ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT-PSS), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) templated PANIs were prepared through chemical synthesis, processed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and were fabricated into films by solution casting. Absorption and infra-red spectra were studied to gain insight into the possible molecular interactions. Surface morphology was studied through scanning electron microscope and optical microscope. Interestingly, tensile testing studies revealed least strain for pure PVA when compared to the blends of templated PANI. Furthermore, among the blends, TSC templated PANI possessed maximum elasticity. The ultimate tensile strength for PVA processed, PEG-templated PANI was found to be five times more than other blends considered in this study. We establish structure–property correlation with morphology, spectral characterization and tensile testing studies.
Abstract: New sensors and technologies – such as microphones,
touchscreens or infrared sensors – are currently making their
appearance in the automotive sector, introducing new kinds of
Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). The interactions with such tools
might be cognitively expensive, thus unsuitable for driving tasks.
It could for instance be dangerous to use touchscreens with a
visual feedback while driving, as it distracts the driver’s visual
attention away from the road. Furthermore, new technologies in
car cockpits modify the interactions of the users with the central
system. In particular, touchscreens are preferred to arrays of buttons
for space improvement and design purposes. However, the buttons’
tactile feedback is no more available to the driver, which makes
such interfaces more difficult to manipulate while driving. Gestures
combined with an auditory feedback might therefore constitute an
interesting alternative to interact with the HMI. Indeed, gestures can
be performed without vision, which means that the driver’s visual
attention can be totally dedicated to the driving task. In fact, the
auditory feedback can both inform the driver with respect to the task
performed on the interface and on the performed gesture, which might
constitute a possible solution to the lack of tactile information. As
audition is a relatively unused sense in automotive contexts, gesture
sonification can contribute to reducing the cognitive load thanks
to the proposed multisensory exploitation. Our approach consists
in using a virtual object (VO) to sonify the consequences of the
gesture rather than the gesture itself. This approach is motivated
by an ecological point of view: Gestures do not make sound, but
their consequences do. In this experiment, the aim was to identify
efficient sound strategies, to transmit dynamic information of VOs to
users through sound. The swipe gesture was chosen for this purpose,
as it is commonly used in current and new interfaces. We chose
two VO parameters to sonify, the hand-VO distance and the VO
velocity. Two kinds of sound parameters can be chosen to sonify the
VO behavior: Spectral or temporal parameters. Pitch and brightness
were tested as spectral parameters, and amplitude modulation as a
temporal parameter. Performances showed a positive effect of sound
compared to a no-sound situation, revealing the usefulness of sounds
to accomplish the task.
Abstract: The effects of thermal radiation, Soret and Dufour
parameters on mixed convection and nanofluid flow over a stretching
sheet in the presence of a magnetic field are investigated. The flow is
subject to temperature dependent viscosity and a chemical reaction
parameter. It is assumed that the nanoparticle volume fraction at the
wall may be actively controlled. The physical problem is modelled
using systems of nonlinear differential equations which have been
solved numerically using a spectral relaxation method. In addition
to the discussion on heat and mass transfer processes, the velocity,
nanoparticles volume fraction profiles as well as the skin friction
coefficient are determined for different important physical parameters.
A comparison of current findings with previously published results
for some special cases of the problem shows an excellent agreement.
Abstract: The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Falkner-Skan
equations appear in study of laminar boundary layers flow over
a wedge in presence of a transverse magnetic field. The partial
differential equations of boundary layer problems in presence of
a transverse magnetic field are reduced to MHD Falkner-Skan
equation by similarity solution methods. This is a nonlinear ordinary
differential equation. In this paper, we solve this equation via
spectral collocation method based on Bessel functions of the first
kind. In this approach, we reduce the solution of the nonlinear
MHD Falkner-Skan equation to a solution of a nonlinear algebraic
equations system. Then, the resulting system is solved by Newton
method. We discuss obtained solution by studying the behavior
of boundary layer flow in terms of skin friction, velocity, various
amounts of magnetic field and angle of wedge. Finally, the results
are compared with other methods mentioned in literature. We can
conclude that the presented method has better accuracy than others.
Abstract: The use of the Multilayer Perceptron Neural Networks (MLPNN) technique is presented to estimate the future state of use of a licensed channel by primary users (PUs); this will be useful at the spectral decision stage in cognitive radio networks (CRN) to determine approximately in which time instants of future may secondary users (SUs) opportunistically use the spectral bandwidth to send data through the primary wireless network. To validate the results, sequences of occupancy data of channel were generated by simulation. The results show that the prediction percentage is greater than 60% in some of the tests carried out.
Abstract: The natural native antioxidants N,N-P-methyl phenyl acetone and N,N-phenyl acetone were isolated from the Iraqi crude oil region of Kirkuk by ion exchange and their structure was characterized by spectral and chemical analysis methods. Tetraline was used as a liquid hydrocarbon to detect the efficiency of isolated molecules at elevated temperature (393 K) that it has physicochemical specifications and structure closed to hydrocarbons fractionated from crude oil. The synthesized universal antioxidant 2,6-ditertiaryisobutyl-p-methyl phenol (Unol) with known stochiometric coefficient of inhibition equal to (2) was used as a model for comparative evaluation at the same conditions. Modified chemiluminescence method was used to find the amount of absorbed oxygen and the induction periods in and without the existence of isolated antioxidants molecules. The results of induction periods and quantity of absorbed oxygen during the oxidation process were measured by manometric installation. It was seen that at specific equal concentrations of N,N-phenyl acetone and N, N-P-methyl phenyl acetone in comparison with Unol at 393 K were with (2) and (2.5) times efficient than do Unol. It means that they had the ability to inhibit the formation of new free radicals and prevent the chain reaction to pass from the propagation to the termination step rather than decomposition of formed hydroperoxides.
Abstract: Hyperspectral imagery (HSI) typically provides a
wealth of information captured in a wide range of the
electromagnetic spectrum for each pixel in the image. Hence, a
pixel in HSI is a high-dimensional vector of intensities with a
large spectral range and a high spectral resolution. Therefore, the
semantic interpretation is a challenging task of HSI analysis. We
focused in this paper on object classification as HSI semantic
interpretation. However, HSI classification still faces some issues,
among which are the following: The spatial variability of spectral
signatures, the high number of spectral bands, and the high cost
of true sample labeling. Therefore, the high number of spectral
bands and the low number of training samples pose the problem of
the curse of dimensionality. In order to resolve this problem, we
propose to introduce the process of dimensionality reduction trying
to improve the classification of HSI. The presented approach is a
semi-supervised band selection method based on spatial hypergraph
embedding model to represent higher order relationships with
different weights of the spatial neighbors corresponding to the
centroid of pixel. This semi-supervised band selection has been
developed to select useful bands for object classification. The
presented approach is evaluated on AVIRIS and ROSIS HSIs
and compared to other dimensionality reduction methods. The
experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach
compared to many existing dimensionality reduction methods for
HSI classification.
Abstract: This study presents the site response analysis of mica-sand mixtures available in certain parts of the world including Izmir, a highly populated city and located in a seismically active region in western part of Turkey. We performed site response analyses by employing SHAKE, an equivalent linear approach, for the micaceous soil deposits consisting of layers with different amount of mica contents and thicknesses. Dynamic behavior of micaceous sands such as shear modulus reduction and damping ratio curves are input for the ground response analyses. Micaceous sands exhibit a unique dynamic response under a scenario earthquake with a magnitude of Mw=6. Results showed that higher amount of mica caused higher spectral accelerations.
Abstract: In this paper, a spectral decomposition method is developed for the direct integration of stiff and nonstiff homogeneous linear (ODE) systems with linear, constant, or zero right hand sides (RHSs). The method does not require iteration but obtains solutions at any random points of t, by direct evaluation, in the interval of integration. All the numerical solutions obtained for the class of systems coincide with the exact theoretical solutions. In particular, solutions of homogeneous linear systems, i.e. with zero RHS, conform to the exact analytical solutions of the systems in terms of t.
