Abstract: Many studies have focused on the nonlinear analysis
of electroencephalography (EEG) mainly for the characterization of
epileptic brain states. It is assumed that at least two states of the
epileptic brain are possible: the interictal state characterized by a
normal apparently random, steady-state EEG ongoing activity; and
the ictal state that is characterized by paroxysmal occurrence of
synchronous oscillations and is generally called in neurology, a
seizure.
The spatial and temporal dynamics of the epileptogenic process is
still not clear completely especially the most challenging aspects of
epileptology which is the anticipation of the seizure. Despite all the
efforts we still don-t know how and when and why the seizure
occurs. However actual studies bring strong evidence that the
interictal-ictal state transition is not an abrupt phenomena. Findings
also indicate that it is possible to detect a preseizure phase.
Our approach is to use the neural network tool to detect interictal
states and to predict from those states the upcoming seizure ( ictal
state). Analysis of the EEG signal based on neural networks is used
for the classification of EEG as either seizure or non-seizure. By
applying prediction methods it will be possible to predict the
upcoming seizure from non-seizure EEG.
We will study the patients admitted to the epilepsy monitoring
unit for the purpose of recording their seizures. Preictal, ictal, and
post ictal EEG recordings are available on such patients for analysis
The system will be induced by taking a body of samples then
validate it using another. Distinct from the two first ones a third body
of samples is taken to test the network for the achievement of
optimum prediction. Several methods will be tried 'Backpropagation
ANN' and 'RBF'.
Abstract: The design of a pattern classifier includes an attempt
to select, among a set of possible features, a minimum subset of
weakly correlated features that better discriminate the pattern classes.
This is usually a difficult task in practice, normally requiring the
application of heuristic knowledge about the specific problem
domain. The selection and quality of the features representing each
pattern have a considerable bearing on the success of subsequent
pattern classification. Feature extraction is the process of deriving
new features from the original features in order to reduce the cost of
feature measurement, increase classifier efficiency, and allow higher
classification accuracy. Many current feature extraction techniques
involve linear transformations of the original pattern vectors to new
vectors of lower dimensionality. While this is useful for data
visualization and increasing classification efficiency, it does not
necessarily reduce the number of features that must be measured
since each new feature may be a linear combination of all of the
features in the original pattern vector. In this paper a new approach is
presented to feature extraction in which feature selection, feature
extraction, and classifier training are performed simultaneously using
a genetic algorithm. In this approach each feature value is first
normalized by a linear equation, then scaled by the associated weight
prior to training, testing, and classification. A knn classifier is used to
evaluate each set of feature weights. The genetic algorithm optimizes
a vector of feature weights, which are used to scale the individual
features in the original pattern vectors in either a linear or a nonlinear
fashion. By this approach, the number of features used in classifying
can be finely reduced.
Abstract: This paper considers the integration of assembly
operations and product structure to Cellular Manufacturing System
(CMS) design so that to correct the drawbacks of previous researches
in the literature. For this purpose, a new mathematical model is
developed which dedicates machining and assembly operations to
manufacturing cells while the objective function is to minimize the
intercellular movements resulting due to both of them. A
linearization method is applied to achieve optimum solution through
solving aforementioned nonlinear model by common programming
language such as Lingo. Then, using different examples and
comparing the results, the importance of integrating assembly
considerations is demonstrated.
Abstract: Voltage collapse is instability of heavily loaded electric
power systems that cause to declining voltages and blackout. Power
systems are predicated to become more heavily loaded in the future
decade as the demand for electric power rises while economic and
environmental concerns limit the construction of new transmission
and generation capacity. Heavily loaded power systems are closer to
their stability limits and voltage collapse blackouts will occur if
suitable monitoring and control measures are not taken. To control
transmission lines, it can be used from FACTS devices.
In this paper Harmony search algorithm (HSA) and Genetic
Algorithm (GA) have applied to determine optimal location of
FACTS devices in a power system to improve power system stability.
Three types of FACTS devices (TCPAT, UPFS, and SVC) have been
introduced. Bus under voltage has been solved by controlling reactive
power of shunt compensator. Also a combined series-shunt
compensators has been also used to control transmission power flow
and bus voltage simultaneously.
Different scenarios have been considered. First TCPAT, UPFS, and
SVC are placed solely in transmission lines and indices have been
calculated. Then two types of above controller try to improve
parameters randomly. The last scenario tries to make better voltage
stability index and losses by implementation of three types controller
simultaneously. These scenarios are executed on typical 34-bus test
system and yields efficiency in improvement of voltage profile and
reduction of power losses; it also may permit an increase in power
transfer capacity, maximum loading, and voltage stability margin.
Abstract: The authors present an algorithm for order reduction of linear dynamic systems using the combined advantages of stability equation method and the error minimization by Genetic algorithm. The denominator of the reduced order model is obtained by the stability equation method and the numerator terms of the lower order transfer function are determined by minimizing the integral square error between the transient responses of original and reduced order models using Genetic algorithm. The reduction procedure is simple and computer oriented. It is shown that the algorithm has several advantages, e.g. the reduced order models retain the steady-state value and stability of the original system. The proposed algorithm has also been extended for the order reduction of linear multivariable systems. Two numerical examples are solved to illustrate the superiority of the algorithm over some existing ones including one example of multivariable system.
Abstract: The paper proposes an approach using genetic algorithm for computing the region based image similarity. The image is denoted using a set of segmented regions reflecting color and texture properties of an image. An image is associated with a family of image features corresponding to the regions. The resemblance of two images is then defined as the overall similarity between two families of image features, and quantified by a similarity measure, which integrates properties of all the regions in the images. A genetic algorithm is applied to decide the most plausible matching. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated using examples from an image database of general-purpose images, and is shown to produce good results.
Abstract: Several works regarding facial recognition have dealt with methods which identify isolated characteristics of the face or with templates which encompass several regions of it. In this paper a new technique which approaches the problem holistically dispensing with the need to identify geometrical characteristics or regions of the face is introduced. The characterization of a face is achieved by randomly sampling selected attributes of the pixels of its image. From this information we construct a set of data, which correspond to the values of low frequencies, gradient, entropy and another several characteristics of pixel of the image. Generating a set of “p" variables. The multivariate data set with different polynomials minimizing the data fitness error in the minimax sense (L∞ - Norm) is approximated. With the use of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) it is able to circumvent the problem of dimensionality inherent to higher degree polynomial approximations. The GA yields the degree and values of a set of coefficients of the polynomials approximating of the image of a face. By finding a family of characteristic polynomials from several variables (pixel characteristics) for each face (say Fi ) in the data base through a resampling process the system in use, is trained. A face (say F ) is recognized by finding its characteristic polynomials and using an AdaBoost Classifier from F -s polynomials to each of the Fi -s polynomials. The winner is the polynomial family closer to F -s corresponding to target face in data base.
Abstract: A stiffened laminated composite panel (1 m length ×
0.5m width) was optimized for minimum weight and deflection under
several constraints using genetic algorithm. Here, a significant study
on the performance of a penalty function with two kinds of static and
dynamic penalty factors was conducted. The results have shown that
linear dynamic penalty factors are more effective than the static ones.
Also, a specially combined linear-exponential function has shown to
perform more effective than the previously mentioned penalty
functions. This was then resulted in the less sensitivity of the GA to
the amount of penalty factor.
Abstract: The Chiu-s method which generates a Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) is a method of fuzzy rules extraction. The rules output is a linear function of inputs. In addition, these rules are not explicit for the expert. In this paper, we develop a method which generates Mamdani FIS, where the rules output is fuzzy. The method proceeds in two steps: first, it uses the subtractive clustering principle to estimate both the number of clusters and the initial locations of a cluster centers. Each obtained cluster corresponds to a Mamdani fuzzy rule. Then, it optimizes the fuzzy model parameters by applying a genetic algorithm. This method is illustrated on a traffic network management application. We suggest also a Mamdani fuzzy rules generation method, where the expert wants to classify the output variables in some fuzzy predefined classes.
Abstract: With constraints on data availability and for study of power system stability it is adequate to model the synchronous generator with field circuit and one equivalent damper on q-axis known as the model 1.1. This paper presents a systematic procedure for modelling and simulation of a single-machine infinite-bus power system installed with a thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) where the synchronous generator is represented by model 1.1, so that impact of TCSC on power system stability can be more reasonably evaluated. The model of the example power system is developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK which can be can be used for teaching the power system stability phenomena, and also for research works especially to develop generator controllers using advanced technologies. Further, the parameters of the TCSC controller are optimized using genetic algorithm. The non-linear simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Abstract: This paper proposes a method of adaptively generating a gait pattern of biped robot. The gait synthesis is based on human's gait pattern analysis. The proposed method can easily be applied to generate the natural and stable gait pattern of any biped robot. To analyze the human's gait pattern, sequential images of the human's gait on the sagittal plane are acquired from which the gait control values are extracted. The gait pattern of biped robot on the sagittal plane is adaptively generated by a genetic algorithm using the human's gait control values. However, gait trajectories of the biped robot on the sagittal plane are not enough to construct the complete gait pattern because the biped robot moves on 3-dimension space. Therefore, the gait pattern on the frontal plane, generated from Zero Moment Point (ZMP), is added to the gait one acquired on the sagittal plane. Consequently, the natural and stable walking pattern for the biped robot is obtained.
Abstract: Applicability of tuning the controller gains for Stewart manipulator using genetic algorithm as an efficient search technique is investigated. Kinematics and dynamics models were introduced in detail for simulation purpose. A PD task space control scheme was used. For demonstrating technique feasibility, a Stewart manipulator numerical-model was built. A genetic algorithm was then employed to search for optimal controller gains. The controller was tested onsite a generic circular mission. The simulation results show that the technique is highly convergent with superior performance operating for different payloads.
Abstract: The Prediction of aerodynamic characteristics and
shape optimization of airfoil under the ground effect have been carried
out by integration of computational fluid dynamics and the multiobjective
Pareto-based genetic algorithm. The main flow
characteristics around an airfoil of WIG craft are lift force, lift-to-drag
ratio and static height stability (H.S). However, they show a strong
trade-off phenomenon so that it is not easy to satisfy the design
requirements simultaneously. This difficulty can be resolved by the
optimal design. The above mentioned three characteristics are chosen
as the objective functions and NACA0015 airfoil is considered as a
baseline model in the present study. The profile of airfoil is
constructed by Bezier curves with fourteen control points and these
control points are adopted as the design variables. For multi-objective
optimization problems, the optimal solutions are not unique but a set
of non-dominated optima and they are called Pareto frontiers or Pareto
sets. As the results of optimization, forty numbers of non- dominated
Pareto optima can be obtained at thirty evolutions.
Abstract: This paper explores university course timetabling
problem. There are several characteristics that make scheduling and
timetabling problems particularly difficult to solve: they have huge
search spaces, they are often highly constrained, they require
sophisticated solution representation schemes, and they usually
require very time-consuming fitness evaluation routines. Thus
standard evolutionary algorithms lack of efficiency to deal with
them. In this paper we have proposed a memetic algorithm that
incorporates the problem specific knowledge such that most of
chromosomes generated are decoded into feasible solutions.
Generating vast amount of feasible chromosomes makes the progress
of search process possible in a time efficient manner. Experimental
results exhibit the advantages of the developed Hybrid Genetic
Algorithm than the standard Genetic Algorithm.
Abstract: Finding the minimal logical functions has important applications in the design of logical circuits. This task is solved by many different methods but, frequently, they are not suitable for a computer implementation. We briefly summarise the well-known Quine-McCluskey method, which gives a unique procedure of computing and thus can be simply implemented, but, even for simple examples, does not guarantee an optimal solution. Since the Petrick extension of the Quine-McCluskey method does not give a generally usable method for finding an optimum for logical functions with a high number of values, we focus on interpretation of the result of the Quine-McCluskey method and show that it represents a set covering problem that, unfortunately, is an NP-hard combinatorial problem. Therefore it must be solved by heuristic or approximation methods. We propose an approach based on genetic algorithms and show suitable parameter settings.
Abstract: With the increasing complexity of engineering
problems, the traditional, single-objective and deterministic
optimization method can not meet people-s requirements. A
multi-objective fuzzy optimization model of resource input is built for
M chlor-alkali chemical eco-industrial park in this paper. First, the
model is changed into the form that can be solved by genetic algorithm
using fuzzy theory. And then, a fitness function is constructed for
genetic algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is presented to show
that the method compared with traditional single-objective
optimization method is more practical and efficient.
Abstract: In this study, an optimization of supersonic air-to-air ejector is carried out by a recently developed single-objective genetic algorithm based on adaption of sequence of individuals. Adaptation of sequence is based on Shape-based distance of individuals and embedded micro-genetic algorithm. The optimal sequence found defines the succession of CFD-aimed objective calculation within each generation of regular micro-genetic algorithm. A spring-based deformation mutates the computational grid starting the initial individualvia adapted population in the optimized sequence. Selection of a generation initial individual is knowledge-based. A direct comparison of the newly defined and standard micro-genetic algorithm is carried out for supersonic air-to-air ejector. The only objective is to minimize the loose of total stagnation pressure in the ejector. The result is that sequence-adopted micro-genetic algorithm can provide comparative results to standard algorithm but in significantly lower number of overall CFD iteration steps.
Abstract: The geometric errors in the manufacturing process can
be reduced by optimal positioning of the fixture elements in the
fixture to make the workpiece stiff. We propose a new fixture layout
optimization method N-3-2-1 for large metal sheets in this paper that
combines the genetic algorithm and finite element analysis. The
objective function in this method is to minimize the sum of the nodal
deflection normal to the surface of the workpiece. Two different
kinds of case studies are presented, and optimal position of the
fixturing element is obtained for different cases.
Abstract: Partitioning is a critical area of VLSI CAD. In order to build complex digital logic circuits its often essential to sub-divide multi -million transistor design into manageable Pieces. This paper looks at the various partitioning techniques aspects of VLSI CAD, targeted at various applications. We proposed an evolutionary time-series model and a statistical glitch prediction system using a neural network with selection of global feature by making use of clustering method model, for partitioning a circuit. For evolutionary time-series model, we made use of genetic, memetic & neuro-memetic techniques. Our work focused in use of clustering methods - K-means & EM methodology. A comparative study is provided for all techniques to solve the problem of circuit partitioning pertaining to VLSI design. The performance of all approaches is compared using benchmark data provided by MCNC standard cell placement benchmark net lists. Analysis of the investigational results proved that the Neuro-memetic model achieves greater performance then other model in recognizing sub-circuits with minimum amount of interconnections between them.
Abstract: We study the spatial design of experiment and we want to select a most informative subset, having prespecified size, from a set of correlated random variables. The problem arises in many applied domains, such as meteorology, environmental statistics, and statistical geology. In these applications, observations can be collected at different locations and possibly at different times. In spatial design, when the design region and the set of interest are discrete then the covariance matrix completely describe any objective function and our goal is to choose a feasible design that minimizes the resulting uncertainty. The problem is recast as that of maximizing the determinant of the covariance matrix of the chosen subset. This problem is NP-hard. For using these designs in computer experiments, in many cases, the design space is very large and it's not possible to calculate the exact optimal solution. Heuristic optimization methods can discover efficient experiment designs in situations where traditional designs cannot be applied, exchange methods are ineffective and exact solution not possible. We developed a GA algorithm to take advantage of the exploratory power of this algorithm. The successful application of this method is demonstrated in large design space. We consider a real case of design of experiment. In our problem, design space is very large and for solving the problem, we used proposed GA algorithm.
