Abstract: Diffuse viral encephalitis may lack fever and other cardinal signs of infection and hence its distinction from other acute encephalopathic illnesses is challenging. Often, the EEG changes seen routinely are nonspecific and reflect diffuse encephalopathic changes only. The aim of this study was to use nonlinear dynamic mathematical techniques for analyzing the EEG data in order to look for any characteristic diagnostic patterns in diffuse forms of encephalitis.It was diagnosed on clinical, imaging and cerebrospinal fluid criteria in three young male patients. Metabolic and toxic encephalopathies were ruled out through appropriate investigations. Digital EEGs were done on the 3rd to 5th day of onset. The digital EEGs of 5 male and 5 female age and sex matched healthy volunteers served as controls.Two sample t-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the average values in amplitude between the two groups. However, the standard deviation (or variance) of the EEG signals at FP1-F7 and FP2-F8 are significantly higher for the patients than the normal subjects. The regularisation dimension is significantly less for the patients (average between 1.24-1.43) when compared to the normal persons (average between 1.41-1.63) for the EEG signals from all locations except for the Fz-Cz signal. Similarly the wavelet dimension is significantly less (P = 0.05*) for the patients (1.122) when compared to the normal person (1.458). EEGs are subdued in the case of the patients with presence of uniform patterns, manifested in the values of regularisation and wavelet dimensions, when compared to the normal person, indicating a decrease in chaotic nature.
Abstract: The study of piezoelectric material in the past was in T-Domain form; however, no one has studied piezoelectric material in the S-Domain form. This paper will present the piezoelectric material in the transfer function or S-Domain model. S-Domain is a well known mathematical model, used for analyzing the stability of the material and determining the stability limits. By using S-Domain in testing stability of piezoelectric material, it will provide a new tool for the scientific world to study this material in various forms.
Abstract: Smith Predictor control is theoretically a good solution to the problem of controlling the time delay systems. However, it seldom gets use because it is almost impossible to find out a precise mathematical model of the practical system and very sensitive to uncertain system with variable time-delay. In this paper is concerned with a design method of smith predictor for temperature control system by Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM). The simulation results show that the control system with smith predictor design by CDM is stable and robust whilst giving the desired time domain system performance.
Abstract: This paper illustrates the use of a combined neural
network model for classification of electrocardiogram (ECG) beats.
We present a trainable neural network ensemble approach to develop
customized electrocardiogram beat classifier in an effort to further
improve the performance of ECG processing and to offer
individualized health care.
We process a three stage technique for detection of premature
ventricular contraction (PVC) from normal beats and other heart
diseases. This method includes a denoising, a feature extraction and a
classification. At first we investigate the application of stationary
wavelet transform (SWT) for noise reduction of the
electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Then feature extraction module
extracts 10 ECG morphological features and one timing interval
feature. Then a number of multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) neural
networks with different topologies are designed.
The performance of the different combination methods as well as
the efficiency of the whole system is presented. Among them,
Stacked Generalization as a proposed trainable combined neural
network model possesses the highest recognition rate of around 95%.
Therefore, this network proves to be a suitable candidate in ECG
signal diagnosis systems. ECG samples attributing to the different
ECG beat types were extracted from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia
database for the study.
Abstract: A mathematical model of the respiratory system is
introduced in this study. Geometrical dimensions of the respiratory
system were used to compute the acoustic properties of the
respiratory system using the electro-acoustic analogy. The effect of
the geometrical proportions of the respiratory system is observed in
the paper.
Abstract: This study adopted previous fault patterns, results of
detection analysis, historical records and data, and experts-
experiences to establish fuzzy principles and estimate the failure
probability index of components of a power transformer. Considering
that actual parameters and limiting conditions of parameters may
differ, this study used the standard data of IEC, IEEE, and CIGRE as
condition parameters. According to the characteristics of each
condition parameter, relative degradation was introduced to reflect the
degree of influence of the factors on the transformer condition. The
method of fuzzy mathematics was adopted to determine the
subordinate function of the transformer condition. The calculation
used the Matlab Fuzzy Tool Box to select the condition parameters of
coil winding, iron core, bushing, OLTC, insulating oil and other
auxiliary components and factors (e.g., load records, performance
history, and maintenance records) of the transformer to establish the
fuzzy principles. Examples were presented to support the rationality
and effectiveness of the evaluation method of power transformer
performance conditions, as based on fuzzy comprehensive evaluation.
Abstract: Knee joint forces are available by in vivo measurement
using an instrumented knee prosthesis for small to moderate knee
flexion but not for high flexion yet. We created a 2D mathematical
model of the lower limb incorporating several new features such as a
patello-femoral mechanism, a thigh-calf contact at high knee flexion
and co-contracting muscles' force ratio, then used it to determine knee
joint forces arising from high knee flexions in four kneeling
conditions: rising with legs in parallel, with one foot forward, with or
without arm use. With arms used, the maximum values of knee joint
force decreased to about 60% of those with arms not used. When rising
with one foot forward, if arms are not used, the forward leg sustains a
force as large as that sustained when rising with legs parallel.
Abstract: This paper deals with the comparison between two proposed control strategies for a DC-DC boost converter. The first control is a classical Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and the second one is a distance based Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control (FSMC). The SMC is an analytical control approach based on the boost mathematical model. However, the FSMC is a non-conventional control approach which does not need the controlled system mathematical model. It needs only the measures of the output voltage to perform the control signal. The obtained simulation results show that the two proposed control methods are robust for the case of load resistance and the input voltage variations. However, the proposed FSMC gives a better step voltage response than the one obtained by the SMC.
Abstract: In recent years, many researches to mine the exploding Web world, especially User Generated Content (UGC) such as
weblogs, for knowledge about various phenomena and events in the physical world have been done actively, and also Web services
with the Web-mined knowledge have begun to be developed for
the public. However, there are few detailed investigations on how accurately Web-mined data reflect physical-world data. It must be
problematic to idolatrously utilize the Web-mined data in public Web services without ensuring their accuracy sufficiently. Therefore,
this paper introduces the simplest Web Sensor and spatiotemporallynormalized
Web Sensor to extract spatiotemporal data about a target
phenomenon from weblogs searched by keyword(s) representing the
target phenomenon, and tries to validate the potential and reliability of the Web-sensed spatiotemporal data by four kinds of granularity
analyses of coefficient correlation with temperature, rainfall, snowfall,
and earthquake statistics per day by region of Japan Meteorological
Agency as physical-world data: spatial granularity (region-s population
density), temporal granularity (time period, e.g., per day vs. per week), representation granularity (e.g., “rain" vs. “heavy rain"), and
media granularity (weblogs vs. microblogs such as Tweets).
Abstract: As global industry developed rapidly, the energy
demand also rises simultaneously. In the production process, there’s a
lot of energy consumed in the process. Formally, the energy used in
generating the heat in the production process. In the total energy
consumption, 40% of the heat was used in process heat, mechanical
work, chemical energy and electricity. The remaining 50% were
released into the environment. It will cause energy waste and
environment pollution. There are many ways for recovering the waste
heat in factory. Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system can produce
electricity and reduce energy costs by recovering the waste of low
temperature heat in the factory. In addition, ORC is the technology
with the highest power generating efficiency in low-temperature heat
recycling. However, most of factories executives are still hesitated
because of the high implementation cost of the ORC system, even a lot
of heat are wasted. Therefore, this study constructs a nonlinear
mathematical model of waste heat recovery equipment configuration
to maximize profits. A particle swarm optimization algorithm is
developed to generate the optimal facility installation plan for the ORC
system.
Abstract: In this work, we analyze the deformation of surface
waves in shallow flows conditions, propagating in a channel of
slowly varying cross-section. Based on a singular perturbation
technique, the main purpose is to predict the motion of waves by
using a dimensionless formulation of the governing equations,
considering that the longitudinal variation of the transversal section
obey a power-law distribution. We show that the spatial distribution
of the waves in the varying cross-section is a function of a kinematic
parameter,κ , and two geometrical parameters εh
and w ε . The above
spatial behavior of the surface elevation is modeled by an ordinary
differential equation. The use of single formulas to model the varying
cross sections or transitions considered in this work can be a useful
approximation to natural or artificial geometrical configurations.
Abstract: Cryptographic protocols are widely used in various
applications to provide secure communications. They are usually
represented as communicating agents that send and receive messages.
These agents use their knowledge to exchange information and
communicate with other agents involved in the protocol. An agent
knowledge can be partitioned into explicit knowledge and procedural
knowledge. The explicit knowledge refers to the set of information
which is either proper to the agent or directly obtained from other
agents through communication. The procedural knowledge relates to
the set of mechanisms used to get new information from what is
already available to the agent.
In this paper, we propose a mathematical framework which specifies
the explicit knowledge of an agent involved in a cryptographic
protocol. Modelling this knowledge is crucial for the specification,
analysis, and implementation of cryptographic protocols. We also,
report on a prototype tool that allows the representation and the
manipulation of the explicit knowledge.
Abstract: Radial flow reactor was focused for large scale
methanol synthesis and in which the heat transfer type was cross-flow.
The effects of operating conditions including the reactor inlet air
temperature, the heating pipe temperature and the air flow rate on the
cross-flow heat transfer was investigated and the results showed that
the temperature profile of the area in front of the heating pipe was
slightly affected by all the operating conditions. The main area whose
temperature profile was influenced was the area behind the heating
pipe. The heat transfer direction according to the air flow directions. In
order to provide the basis for radial flow reactor design calculation, the
dimensionless number group method was used for data fitting of the
bed effective thermal conductivity and the wall heat transfer
coefficient which was calculated by the mathematical model with the
product of Reynolds number and Prandtl number. The comparison of
experimental data and calculated value showed that the calculated
value fit the experimental data very well and the formulas could be
used for reactor designing calculation.
Abstract: The pavement constructions on soft and expansive soils are not durable and unable to sustain heavy traffic loading. As a result, pavement failures and settlement problems will occur very often even under light traffic loading due to cyclic and rolling effects. Geotechnical engineers have dwelled deeply into this matter, and adopt various methods to improve the engineering characteristics of soft fine-grained soils and expansive soils. The problematic soils are either replaced by good and better quality material or treated by using chemical stabilization with various binding materials. Increased the strength and durability are also the part of the sustainability drive to reduce the environment footprint of the built environment by the efficient use of resources and waste recycle materials. This paper presents a series of laboratory tests and evaluates the effect of cement and fly ash on the strength and drainage characteristics of soil in Miri. The tests were performed at different percentages of cement and fly ash by dry weight of soil. Additional tests were also performed on soils treated with the combinations of fly ash with cement and lime. The results of this study indicate an increase in unconfined compression strength and a decrease in hydraulic conductivity of the treated soil.
Abstract: Monitoring of ecological systems is one of the major
issues in ecosystem research. The concepts and methodology of
mathematical systems theory provide useful tools to face this
problem. In many cases, state monitoring of a complex ecological
system consists in observation (measurement) of certain state
variables, and the whole state process has to be determined from the
observed data. The solution proposed in the paper is the design of an
observer system, which makes it possible to approximately recover
the state process from its partial observation. The method is
illustrated with a trophic chain of resource – producer – primary
consumer type and a numerical example is also presented.
Abstract: Cerium-doped lanthanum bromide LaBr3:Ce(5%)
crystals are considered to be one of the most advanced scintillator
materials used in PET scanning, combining a high light yield, fast
decay time and excellent energy resolution. Apart from the correct
choice of scintillator, it is also important to optimise the detector
geometry, not least in terms of source-to-detector distance in order to
obtain reliable measurements and efficiency. In this study a
commercially available 25 mm x 25 mm BrilLanCeTM 380 LaBr3: Ce
(5%) detector was characterised in terms of its efficiency at varying
source-to-detector distances. Gamma-ray spectra of 22Na, 60Co, and
137Cs were separately acquired at distances of 5, 10, 15, and 20cm. As
a result of the change in solid angle subtended by the detector, the
geometric efficiency reduced in efficiency with increasing distance.
High efficiencies at low distances can cause pulse pile-up when
subsequent photons are detected before previously detected events
have decayed. To reduce this systematic error the source-to-detector
distance should be balanced between efficiency and pulse pile-up
suppression as otherwise pile-up corrections would need to be
necessary at short distances. In addition to the experimental
measurements Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out for the
same setup, allowing a comparison of results. The advantages and
disadvantages of each approach have been highlighted.
Abstract: In Multiple Sclerosis, pathological changes in the
brain results in deviations in signal intensity on Magnetic Resonance
Images (MRI). Quantitative analysis of these changes and their
correlation with clinical finding provides important information for
diagnosis. This constitutes the objective of our work. A new approach
is developed. After the enhancement of images contrast and the brain
extraction by mathematical morphology algorithm, we proceed to the
brain segmentation. Our approach is based on building statistical
model from data itself, for normal brain MRI and including clustering
tissue type. Then we detect signal abnormalities (MS lesions) as a
rejection class containing voxels that are not explained by the built
model. We validate the method on MR images of Multiple Sclerosis
patients by comparing its results with those of human expert
segmentation.
Abstract: In this paper, different approaches to solve the
forward kinematics of a three DOF actuator redundant hydraulic
parallel manipulator are presented. On the contrary to series
manipulators, the forward kinematic map of parallel manipulators
involves highly coupled nonlinear equations, which are almost
impossible to solve analytically. The proposed methods are using
neural networks identification with different structures to solve the
problem. The accuracy of the results of each method is analyzed in
detail and the advantages and the disadvantages of them in
computing the forward kinematic map of the given mechanism is
discussed in detail. It is concluded that ANFIS presents the best
performance compared to MLP, RBF and PNN networks in this
particular application.
Abstract: This paper presents kinematic and dynamic analysis of a novel 8-DOF hybrid robot manipulator. The hybrid robot manipulator under consideration consists of a parallel robot which
is followed by a serial mechanism. The parallel mechanism has three translational DOF, and the serial mechanism has five DOF so that the overall degree of freedom is eight. The introduced
manipulator has a wide workspace and a high capability to reduce
the actuating energy. The inverse and forward kinematic solutions are described in closed form. The theoretical results are verified by
a numerical example. Inverse dynamic analysis of the robot is presented by utilizing the Iterative Newton-Euler and Lagrange dynamic formulation methods. Finally, for performing a multi-step
arc welding process, results have indicated that the introduced manipulator is highly capable of reducing the actuating energy.
Abstract: Modelling techniques for a fluid coupling taken from
published literature have been extended to include the effects of the
filling and emptying of the coupling with oil and the variation in
losses when the coupling is partially full. In the model, the fluid flow
inside the coupling is considered to have two principal velocity
components; one circumferentially about the coupling axis
(centrifugal head) and the other representing the secondary vortex
within the coupling itself (vortex head). The calculation of liquid
mass flow rate circulating between the two halves of the coupling is
based on: the assumption of a linear velocity variation in the
circulating vortex flow; the head differential in the fluid due to the
speed difference between the two shafts; and the losses in the
circulating vortex flow as a result of the impingement of the flow
with the blades in the coupling and friction within the passages
between the blades.
