Abstract: A numerical technique in a boundary-fitted curvilinear grid model is developed to simulate the extent of inland inundation along the coastal belts of Peninsular Malaysia and Southern Thailand due to 2004 Indian ocean tsunami. Tsunami propagation and run-up are also studied in this paper. The vertically integrated shallow water equations are solved by using the method of lines (MOL). For this purpose the boundary-fitted grids are generated along the coastal and island boundaries and the other open boundaries of the model domain. A transformation is used to the governing equations so that the transformed physical domain is converted into a rectangular one. The MOL technique is applied to the transformed shallow water equations and the boundary conditions so that the equations are converted into ordinary differential equations initial value problem. Finally the 4th order Runge-Kutta method is used to solve these ordinary differential equations. The moving boundary technique is applied instead of fixed sea side wall or fixed coastal boundary to ensure the movement of the coastal boundary. The extent of intrusion of water and associated tsunami propagation are simulated for the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand. The simulated results are compared with the results obtained from a finite difference model and the data available in the USGS website. All simulations show better approximation than earlier research and also show excellent agreement with the observed data.
Abstract: Pricing financial contracts on several underlying assets
received more and more interest as a demand for complex derivatives.
The option pricing under asset price involving jump diffusion
processes leads to the partial integral differential equation (PIDEs),
which is an extension of the Black-Scholes PDE with a new integral
term. The aim of this paper is to show how basket option prices
in the jump diffusion models, mainly on the Merton model, can
be computed using RBF based approximation methods. For a test
problem, the RBF-PU method is applied for numerical solution
of partial integral differential equation arising from the two-asset
European vanilla put options. The numerical result shows the
accuracy and efficiency of the presented method.
Abstract: The environmental impact related to ornamental stones (such as marbles and granites) is largely debated. Starting from the industrial revolution, continuous improvements of machineries led to a higher exploitation of this natural resource and to a more international interaction between markets. As a consequence, the environmental impact of the extraction and processing of stones has increased. Nevertheless, if compared with other building materials, ornamental stones are generally more durable, natural, and recyclable. From the scientific point of view, studies on stone life cycle sustainability have been carried out, but these are often partial or not very significant because of the high percentage of approximations and assumptions in calculations. This is due to the lack, in life cycle databases (e.g. Ecoinvent, Thinkstep, and ELCD), of datasets about the specific technologies employed in the stone production chain. For example, databases do not contain information about diamond wires, chains or explosives, materials commonly used in quarries and transformation plants. The project presented in this paper aims to populate the life cycle databases with specific data of specific stone processes. To this goal, the methodology follows the standardized approach of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), according to the requirements of UNI 14040-14044 and to the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) Handbook guidelines of the European Commission. The study analyses the processes of the entire production chain (from-cradle-to-gate system boundaries), including the extraction of benches, the cutting of blocks into slabs/tiles and the surface finishing. Primary data have been collected in Italian quarries and transformation plants which use technologies representative of the current state-of-the-art. Since the technologies vary according to the hardness of the stone, the case studies comprehend both soft stones (marbles) and hard stones (gneiss). In particular, data about energy, materials and emissions were collected in marble basins of Carrara and in Beola and Serizzo basins located in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola. Data were then elaborated through an appropriate software to build a life cycle model. The model was realized setting free parameters that allow an easy adaptation to specific productions. Through this model, the study aims to boost the direct participation of stone companies and encourage the use of LCA tool to assess and improve the stone sector environmental sustainability. At the same time, the realization of accurate Life Cycle Inventory data aims at making available, to researchers and stone experts, ILCD compliant datasets of the most significant processes and technologies related to the ornamental stone sector.
Abstract: Conditions corresponding to the unconditional stability
of convection in a mechanically anisotropic fluid saturated porous
medium of infinite horizontal extent are determined. The medium
is heated from below and its bounding surfaces are subjected to
temperature modulation which consists of a steady part and a
time periodic oscillating part. The Brinkman model is employed
in the momentum equation with the Bousinessq approximation.
The stability region is found for arbitrary values of modulational
frequency and amplitude using the energy method. Higher order
numerical computations are carried out to find critical boundaries
and subcritical instability regions more accurately.
Abstract: The main objective of the present article is to explore the state of mixed convection nanofluid flow of gyrotactic microorganisms from an isothermal vertical wedge in porous medium. In our pioneering investigation, the easiest possible boundary conditions have been employed, in other words when the temperature, the nanofluid and motile microorganisms’ density have been considered to be constant on the wedge wall. Adding motile microorganisms to the nanofluid tends to enhance microscale mixing, mass transfer, and improve the nanofluid stability. Upon the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation and non-similarity transmutation, the paradigm of nonlinear equations are obtained and tackled numerically by using the R.K. Gill and shooting methods to obtain the dimensionless velocity, temperature, nanoparticle concentration and motile microorganisms density together with the reduced Sherwood, Nusselt, and numbers. Bioconvection parameters have strong effect upon the motile microorganism, heat, and volume fraction of nanoparticle transport rates. In the case when bioconvection is neglected, the obtained computations were found in very good agreement with the previous published data.
Abstract: In this article, we analyze the different approaches to the topic Magnetism of Matter in physics textbooks of Brazilian schools. For this, we compared the approach to the concepts of the magnetic characteristics of materials (diamagnetism, paramagnetism, ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism) in different sources of information and in different levels of education, from Higher Education to High School. In this sense, we used as reference the theory of the Didactic Transposition of Yves Chevallard, a French educational theorist, who conceived in his theory three types of knowledge – Scholarly Knowledge, Knowledge to be taught and Taught Knowledge – related to teaching practice. As a research methodology, from the reading of the works used in teacher training and those destined to basic education students, we compared the treatment of a higher education physics book, a scientific article published in a Brazilian journal of the educational area, and four high school textbooks, in order to establish in which there is a greater or lesser degree of approximation with the knowledge produced by the scholars – scholarly knowledge – or even with the knowledge to be taught (to that found in books intended for teaching). Thus, we evaluated the level of proximity of the subjects conveyed in high school and higher education, as well as the relevance that some textbook authors give to the theme.
Abstract: In Wireless Sensor Networks which consist of tiny
wireless sensor nodes with limited battery power, one of the most
fundamental applications is data aggregation which collects nearby
environmental conditions and aggregates the data to a designated
destination, called a sink node. Important issues concerning the
data aggregation are time efficiency and energy consumption due
to its limited energy, and therefore, the related problem, named
Minimum Latency Aggregation Scheduling (MLAS), has been the
focus of many researchers. Its objective is to compute the minimum
latency schedule, that is, to compute a schedule with the minimum
number of timeslots, such that the sink node can receive the
aggregated data from all the other nodes without any collision or
interference. For the problem, the two interference models, the graph
model and the more realistic physical interference model known as
Signal-to-Interference-Noise-Ratio (SINR), have been adopted with
different power models, uniform-power and non-uniform power (with
power control or without power control), and different antenna
models, omni-directional antenna and directional antenna models.
In this survey article, as the problem has proven to be NP-hard,
we present and compare several state-of-the-art approximation
algorithms in various models on the basis of latency as its
performance measure.
Abstract: A problem is formulated for the natural oscillations of a circular plate of linearly variable thickness on the basis of the symmetry method. The equations of natural frequencies and forms for a plate are obtained, providing that it is rigidly fixed along the inner contour. The first three eigenfrequencies are calculated, and the eigenmodes of the oscillations of the acoustic element are constructed. An algorithm for applying the symmetry method and the factorization method for solving problems in the theory of oscillations for plates of variable thickness is shown. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on the basis of comparison of known results and those obtained in the article. It is shown that the results are more accurate and reliable.
Abstract: The reconstruction from sparse-view projections is one
of important problems in computed tomography (CT) limited by
the availability or feasibility of obtaining of a large number of
projections. Traditionally, convex regularizers have been exploited
to improve the reconstruction quality in sparse-view CT, and the
convex constraint in those problems leads to an easy optimization
process. However, convex regularizers often result in a biased
approximation and inaccurate reconstruction in CT problems. Here,
we present a nonconvex, Lipschitz continuous and non-smooth
regularization model. The CT reconstruction is formulated as a
nonconvex constrained L1 − L2 minimization problem and solved
through a difference of convex algorithm and alternating direction
of multiplier method which generates a better result than L0 or L1
regularizers in the CT reconstruction. We compare our method with
previously reported high performance methods which use convex
regularizers such as TV, wavelet, curvelet, and curvelet+TV (CTV)
on the test phantom images. The results show that there are benefits in
using the nonconvex regularizer in the sparse-view CT reconstruction.
Abstract: The spoke type rotor can be used to obtain magnetic
flux concentration in permanent magnet machines. This allows the
air gap magnetic flux density to exceed the remanent flux density
of the permanent magnets but gives problems with leakage fluxes
in the magnetic circuit. The end leakage flux of one spoke type
permanent magnet rotor design is studied through measurements and
finite element simulations. The measurements are performed in the
end regions of a 12 kW prototype generator for a vertical axis
wind turbine. The simulations are made using three dimensional
finite elements to calculate the magnetic field distribution in the
end regions of the machine. Also two dimensional finite element
simulations are performed and the impact of the two dimensional
approximation is studied. It is found that the magnetic leakage flux
in the end regions of the machine is equal to about 20% of the flux
in the permanent magnets. The overestimation of the performance by
the two dimensional approximation is quantified and a curve-fitted
expression for its behavior is suggested.
Abstract: Based on the conjugate gradient (CG) algorithm, the constrained matrix equation AXB=C and the associate optimal approximation problem are considered for the symmetric arrowhead matrix solutions in the premise of consistency. The convergence results of the method are presented. At last, a numerical example is given to illustrate the efficiency of this method.
Abstract: The present study investigates the effect of inclusions on the shape and size of crack tip plastic zones in engineering materials subjected to static loads by employing the element free Galerkin method (EFGM). The modeling of the discontinuities produced by cracks and inclusions becomes independent of the grid chosen for analysis. The standard displacement approximation is modified by adding additional enrichment functions, which introduce the effects of different discontinuities into the formulation. The level set method has been used to represent different discontinuities present in the domain. The effect of inclusions on the extent of crack tip plastic zones is investigated by solving some numerical problems by the EFGM.
Abstract: Hydraulic structures such as gravity dams are classified as essential structures, and have the vital role in providing strong and safe water resource management. Three major aspects must be considered to achieve an effective design of such a structure: 1) The building cost, 2) safety, and 3) accurate analysis of seepage characteristics. Due to the complexity and non-linearity relationships of the seepage process, many approximation theories have been developed; however, the application of these theories results in noticeable errors. The analytical solution, which includes the difficult conformal mapping procedure, could be applied for a simple and symmetrical problem only. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to: 1) develop a surrogate model based on numerical simulated data using SEEPW software to approximately simulate seepage process related to a hydraulic structure, 2) develop and solve a linked simulation-optimization model based on the developed surrogate model to describe the seepage occurring under a concrete gravity dam, in order to obtain optimum and safe design at minimum cost. The result shows that the linked simulation-optimization model provides an efficient and optimum design of concrete gravity dams.
Abstract: This article considers the problem of evaluating
infinite-time (or finite-time) ruin probability under a given compound
Poisson surplus process by approximating the claim size distribution
by a finite mixture exponential, say Hyperexponential, distribution. It
restates the infinite-time (or finite-time) ruin probability as a solvable
ordinary differential equation (or a partial differential equation).
Application of our findings has been given through a simulation study.
Abstract: Recent technological advance has prompted significant
interest in developing the control theory of quantum systems.
Following the increasing interest in the control of quantum
dynamics, this paper examines the control problem of Schrödinger
equation because quantum dynamics is basically governed by
Schrödinger equation. From the practical point of view, stochastic
disturbances cannot be avoided in the implementation of control
method for quantum systems. Thus, we consider here the robust
stabilization problem of Schrödinger equation against stochastic
disturbances. In this paper, we adopt model predictive control method
in which control performance over a finite future is optimized with
a performance index that has a moving initial and terminal time.
The objective of this study is to derive the stability criterion for
model predictive control of Schrödinger equation under stochastic
disturbances.
Abstract: Optical properties of bulk and thin film of 1H-CaAlSi for two directions (1,0,0) and (0,0,1) were studied. The calculations are carried out by Density Functional Theory (DFT) method using full potential. GGA approximation was used to calculate exchange-correlation energy. The calculations are performed by WIEN2k package. The results showed that the absorption edge is shifted backward 0.82eV in the thin film than the bulk for both directions. The static values of the real part of dielectric function for four cases were obtained. The static values of the refractive index for four cases are calculated too. The reflectivity graphs have shown an intensive difference between the reflectivity of the thin film and the bulk in the ultraviolet region.
Abstract: The present paper applies the optimal homotopy perturbation method (OHPM) and the optimal homotopy asymptotic method (OHAM) introduced recently to obtain analytic approximations of the non-linear equations modeling the flow of polymer in case of wire coating of a corotational Maxwell fluid. Expression for the velocity field is obtained in non-dimensional form. Comparison of the results obtained by the two methods at different values of non-dimensional parameter l10, reveal that the OHPM is more effective and easy to use. The OHPM solution can be improved even working in the same order of approximation depends on the choices of the auxiliary functions.
Abstract: The aim of this work is to modelize the occlusion of a
person with temporomandibular disorders as an evolutionary equation
and approach its solution by the construction and characterizing
of discrete variational splines. To formulate the problem, certain
boundary conditions have been considered. After showing the
existence and the uniqueness of the solution of such a problem, a
convergence result of a discrete variational evolutionary spline is
shown. A stress analysis of the occlusion of a human jaw with
temporomandibular disorders by finite elements is carried out in
FreeFem++ in order to prove the validity of the presented method.
Abstract: A loading factor performance is necessary for the modeling of centrifugal compressor gas dynamic performance curve. Measured loading factors are linear function of a flow coefficient at an impeller exit. The performance does not depend on the compressibility criterion. To simulate loading factor performances, the authors present two parameters: a loading factor at zero flow rate and an angle between an ordinate and performance line. The calculated loading factor performances of non-viscous are linear too and close to experimental performances. Loading factor performances of several dozens of impellers with different blade exit angles, blade thickness and number, ratio of blade exit/inlet height, and two different type of blade mean line configuration. There are some trends of influence, which are evident – comparatively small blade thickness influence, and influence of geometry parameters is more for impellers with bigger blade exit angles, etc. Approximating equations for both parameters are suggested. The next phase of work will be simulating of experimental performances with the suggested approximation equations as a base.
Abstract: Modelling realized volatility with high-frequency returns is popular as it is an unbiased and efficient estimator of return volatility. A computationally simple model is fitting the logarithms of the realized volatilities with a fractionally integrated long-memory Gaussian process. The Gaussianity assumption simplifies the parameter estimation using the Whittle approximation. Nonetheless, this assumption may not be met in the finite samples and there may be a need to normalize the financial series. Based on the empirical indices S&P500 and DAX, this paper examines the performance of the linear volatility model pre-treated with normalization compared to its existing counterpart. The empirical results show that by including normalization as a pre-treatment procedure, the forecast performance outperforms the existing model in terms of statistical and economic evaluations.
