Abstract: Micro-reading is a new way of reading depended on short messages of mobile phones, network articles and short literary forms, which impacts greatly on traditional way of reading. The effect of "micro-reading" is deeper especially for those growing middle school students and college students. Aiming at the problem with the development of college students' micro-reading and based on the influence of schema theory on the research of cognition of reading, this paper is to analyze the comparison between micro-reading and traditional reading and explore reading strategies in micro-era based on the negative and positive effect which schema theory has on micro-reading.
Abstract: We have developed a polyimide based neural interface electrode to record nerve signals from the sciatic nerve of a rat. The neural interface electrode has a split-ring shape, with four protruding gold electrodes for recording, and two reference gold electrodes around the split-ring. The split-ring electrode can be opened up to encircle the sciatic nerve. The four electrodes can be bent to sit on top of the nerve and hold the device in position, while the split-ring frame remains flat. In comparison, while traditional cuff electrodes can only fit certain sizes of the nerve, the developed device can fit a variety of rat sciatic nerve dimensions from 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm, and adapt to the chronic changes in the nerve as the electrode tips are bendable. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement was conducted. The gold electrode impedance is on the order of 10 kΩ, showing excellent charge injection capacity to record neural signals.
Abstract: The objectives of this research are to compare the satisfaction of students, towards the happiness learning, sorted by their personal profiles, and to figure out the factors that affect the students’ happiness learning. This paper used survey method to collect data from 362 students. The survey was mainly conducted in the Faculty of Management Science, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, including 3,443 students. The statistics used for interpreting the results included the frequencies, percentages, standard deviations and One-way ANOVA. The findings revealed that the students are aware and satisfaction that all the factors in 3 categories (knowledge, skill and attitude) influence the happiness learning at the highest levels. The comparison of the satisfaction levels of the students toward their happiness learning leads to the results that the students with different genders, ages, years of study, and majors of the study have the similar satisfaction at the high level.
Abstract: This survey research aims to study the standard of service quality of food and beverage service staffs in hotel business by studying the service standard of three sample hotels, Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, and Banyan Tree Phuket. In order to find the international service standard of food and beverage service, triangular research, i.e. quantitative, qualitative, and survey were employed. In this research, questionnaires and in-depth interview were used for getting the information on the sequences and method of services. There were three parts of modified questionnaires to measure service quality and guest’s satisfaction including service facilities, attentiveness, responsibility, reliability, and circumspection. This study used sample random sampling to derive subjects with the return rate of the questionnaires was 70% or 280. Data were analyzed by SPSS to find arithmetic mean, SD, percentage, and comparison by t-test and One-way ANOVA. The results revealed that the service quality of the three hotels were in the international level which could create high satisfaction to the international customers. Recommendations for research implementations were to maintain the area of good service quality, and to improve some dimensions of service quality such as reliability. Training in service standard, product knowledge, and new technology for employees should be provided. Furthermore, in order to develop the service quality of the industry, training collaboration between hotel organization and educational institutions in food and beverage service should be considered.
Abstract: This paper proposes an application of probabilistic technique, namely Gaussian process regression, for estimating an optimal sequence of the single machine with total weighted tardiness (SMTWT) scheduling problem. In this work, the Gaussian process regression (GPR) model is utilized to predict an optimal sequence of the SMTWT problem, and its solution is improved by using an iterated local search based on simulated annealing scheme, called GPRISA algorithm. The results show that the proposed GPRISA method achieves a very good performance and a reasonable trade-off between solution quality and time consumption. Moreover, in the comparison of deviation from the best-known solution, the proposed mechanism noticeably outperforms the recently existing approaches.
Abstract: The measurement of enterprise-university-research
cooperative efficiency has important meanings in improving the
cooperative efficiency, strengthening the effective integration of
regional resource, enhancing the ability of regional innovation and
promoting the development of regional economy. The paper
constructs the DEA method and DEA-Malmquist productivity index
method to research the cooperation efficiency of Hubei by making
comparisons with other provinces in China. The study found out the
index of technology efficiency is 0.52 and the enterprise-universityresearch
cooperative efficiency is Non-DEA efficient. To realize the
DEA efficiency of Hubei province, the amount of 1652.596 R&D
employees and 638.368 R&D employees’ full time equivalence should
be reduced or 137.89 billion yuan of new products’ sales income be
increased. Finally, it puts forward policy recommendations on existing
problems to strengthen the standings of the cooperation, realize the
effective application of the research results, and improve the level of
management of enterprise-university-research cooperation efficiency.
Abstract: Cross-laminated timber is increasingly being used in
the construction of high-rise buildings due to its simple
manufacturing system. In term of fire resistance, cross-laminated
timber panels are promoted as having excellent fire resistance,
comparable to that of non-combustible materials and to heavy
timber construction, due to the ability of thick wood assemblies to
char slowly at a predictable rate while maintaining most of their
strength during the fire exposure. This paper presents an overview of
fire performance of cross-laminated timber and evaluation of its
resistance to elevated temperature in comparison to homogeneous
timber panels. Charring rates for cross-laminated timber panels of
those obtained experimentally were compared with those provided by
Eurocode simplified calculation methods.
Abstract: The problem of magnetohydrodynamics boundary layer flow and heat transfer on a permeable stretching surface in a second grade nanofluid under the effect of heat generation and partial slip is studied theoretically. The Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects are also considered. The boundary layer equations governed by the PDE’s are transformed into a set of ODE’s with the help of local similarity transformations. The differential equations are solved by variational finite element method. The effects of different controlling parameters on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics are examined. The numerical results for the dimensionless velocity, temperature and nanoparticle volume fraction as well as the reduced Nusselt and Sherwood number have been presented graphically. The comparison confirmed excellent agreement. The present study is of great interest in coating and suspensions, cooling of metallic plate, oils and grease, paper production, coal water or coal-oil slurries, heat exchangers technology, materials processing exploiting.
Abstract: Qatar’s primary source of fresh water is through
seawater desalination. Amongst the major processes that are
commercially available on the market, the most common large scale
techniques are Multi-Stage Flash distillation (MSF), Multi Effect
distillation (MED), and Reverse Osmosis (RO). Although commonly
used, these three processes are highly expensive down to high energy
input requirements and high operating costs allied with maintenance
and stress induced on the systems in harsh alkaline media. Beside that
cost, environmental footprint of these desalination techniques are
significant; from damaging marine eco-system, to huge land use, to
discharge of tons of GHG and huge carbon footprint.
Other less energy consuming techniques based on membrane
separation are being sought to reduce both the carbon footprint and
operating costs is membrane distillation (MD).
Emerged in 1960s, MD is an alternative technology for water
desalination attracting more attention since 1980s. MD process
involves the evaporation of a hot feed, typically below boiling point
of brine at standard conditions, by creating a water vapor pressure
difference across the porous, hydrophobic membrane. Main
advantages of MD compared to other commercially available
technologies (MSF and MED) and specially RO are reduction of
membrane and module stress due to absence of trans-membrane
pressure, less impact of contaminant fouling on distillate due to
transfer of only water vapor, utilization of low grade or waste heat
from oil and gas industries to heat up the feed up to required
temperature difference across the membrane, superior water quality,
and relatively lower capital and operating cost.
To achieve the objective of this study, state of the art flat-sheet
cross-flow DCMD bench scale unit was designed, commissioned, and
tested. The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics and
morphology of the membrane suitable for DCMD through SEM
imaging and contact angle measurement and to study the water
quality of distillate produced by DCMD bench scale unit.
Comparison with available literature data is undertaken where
appropriate and laboratory data is used to compare a DCMD distillate
quality with that of other desalination techniques and standards.
Membrane SEM analysis showed that the PTFE membrane used
for the study has contact angle of 127º with highly porous surface
supported with less porous and bigger pore size PP membrane. Study
on the effect of feed solution (salinity) and temperature on water
quality of distillate produced from ICP and IC analysis showed that
with any salinity and different feed temperature (up to 70ºC) the
electric conductivity of distillate is less than 5 μS/cm with 99.99%
salt rejection and proved to be feasible and effective process capable
of consistently producing high quality distillate from very high feed
salinity solution (i.e. 100000 mg/L TDS) even with substantial
quality difference compared to other desalination methods such as
RO and MSF.
Abstract: Formation of tensile cracks in concrete slabs of rigid pavement can be (among others) the initiation point of the other, more serious failures which can ultimately lead to complete degradation of the concrete slab and thus the whole pavement. Two measures can be used for reliability assessment of this phenomenon - the probability of failure and/or the reliability index. Different methods can be used for their calculation. The simple ones are called moment methods and simulation techniques. Two methods - FOSM Method and Simple Random Sampling Method - are verified and their comparison is performed. The influence of information about the probability distribution and the statistical parameters of input variables as well as of the limit state function on the calculated reliability index and failure probability are studied in three points on the lower surface of concrete slabs of the older type of rigid pavement formerly used in the Czech Republic.
Abstract: A variety of routing techniques are available to develop surface runoff hydrographs from rainfall. The selection of runoff routing method is very vital as it is directly related to the type of watershed and the required degree of accuracy. There are different modelling softwares available to explore the rainfall-runoff process in urban areas. XPSTORM, a link-node based, integrated stormwater modelling software, has been used in this study for developing surface runoff hydrograph for a Golf course area located in Rockhampton in Central Queensland in Australia. Four commonly used methods, namely SWMM runoff, Kinematic wave, Laurenson, and Time-Area are employed to generate runoff hydrograph for design storm of this study area. In runoff mode of XPSTORM, the rainfall, infiltration, evaporation and depression storage for subcatchments were simulated and the runoff from the subcatchment to collection node was calculated. The simulation results are presented, discussed and compared. The total surface runoff generated by SWMM runoff, Kinematic wave and Time-Area methods are found to be reasonably close, which indicates any of these methods can be used for developing runoff hydrograph of the study area. Laurenson method produces a comparatively less amount of surface runoff, however, it creates highest peak of surface runoff among all which may be suitable for hilly region. Although the Laurenson hydrograph technique is widely acceptable surface runoff routing technique in Queensland (Australia), extensive investigation is recommended with detailed topographic and hydrologic data in order to assess its suitability for use in the case study area.
Abstract: We propose obstacle classification method based on 2D
LIDAR Database. The existing obstacle classification method based
on 2D LIDAR, has an advantage in terms of accuracy and shorter
calculation time. However, it was difficult to classifier the type of
obstacle and therefore accurate path planning was not possible. In
order to overcome this problem, a method of classifying obstacle type
based on width data of obstacle was proposed. However, width data
was not sufficient to improve accuracy. In this paper, database was
established by width and intensity data; the first classification was
processed by the width data; the second classification was processed
by the intensity data; classification was processed by comparing to
database; result of obstacle classification was determined by finding
the one with highest similarity values. An experiment using an actual
autonomous vehicle under real environment shows that calculation
time declined in comparison to 3D LIDAR and it was possible to
classify obstacle using single 2D LIDAR.
Abstract: The MyD88 is an evolutionarily conserved host-expressed adaptor protein that is essential for proper TLR/ IL1R immune-response signaling. A previously identified complete cDNA (1626 bp) of OfMyD88 comprised an ORF of 867 bp encoding a protein of 288 amino acids (32.9 kDa). The gDNA (3761 bp) of OfMyD88 revealed a quinquepartite genome organization composed of 5 exons (with the sizes of 310, 132, 178, 92 and 155 bp) separated by 4 introns. All the introns displayed splice signals consistent with the consensus GT/AG rule. A bipartite domain structure with two domains namely death domain (24-103) coded by 1st exon, and TIR domain (151-288) coded by last 3 exons were identified through in silico analysis. Moreover, homology modeling of these two domains revealed a similar quaternary folding nature between human and rock bream homologs. A comprehensive comparison of vertebrate MyD88 genes showed that they possess a 5-exonic structure.In this structure, the last three exons were strongly conserved, and this suggests that a rigid structure has been maintained during vertebrate evolution.A cluster of TATA box-like sequences were found 0.25 kb upstream of cDNA starting position. In addition, putative 5'-flanking region of OfMyD88 was predicted to have TFBS implicated with TLR signaling, including copies of NFkB1, APRF/ STAT3, Sp1, IRF1 and 2 and Stat1/2. Using qPCR technique, a ubiquitous mRNA expression was detected in liver and blood. Furthermore, a significantly up-regulated transcriptional expression of OfMyD88 was detected in head kidney (12-24 h; >2-fold), spleen (6 h; 1.5-fold), liver (3 h; 1.9-fold) and intestine (24 h; ~2-fold) post-Fla challenge. These data suggest a crucial role for MyD88 in antibacterial immunity of teleosts.
Abstract: In this paper analysis of an infinite beam resting on tensionless extensible geosynthetic reinforced granular bed overlying soft soil strata under moving load with constant velocity is presented. The beam is subjected to a concentrated load moving with constant velocity. The upper reinforced granular bed is modeled by a rough elastic membrane embedded in Pasternak shear layer overlying a series of compressible nonlinear Winkler springs representing the under-lied very poor soil. The tensionless extensible geosynthetic layer has been assumed to deform such that at interface the geosynthetic and the soil have some deformation. Nonlinear behavior of granular fill and the very poor soil has been considered in the analysis by means of hyperbolic constitutive relationships. Detailed parametric study has been conducted to study the influence of various parameters on the response of soil foundation system under consideration by means of deflection and bending moment in the beam and tension mobilized in the geosynthetic layer. This study clearly observed that the comparisons of tension and tensionless foundation and magnitude of applied load, relative compressibility of granular fill and ultimate resistance of poor soil has significant influence on the response of soil foundation system.
Abstract: This paper presents a differential evolution algorithm to design a robust PI and PID controllers for Load Frequency Control (LFC) of nonlinear interconnected power systems considering the boiler dynamics, Governor Dead Band (GDB), Generation Rate Constraint (GRC). Differential evolution algorithm is employed to search for the optimal controller parameters. The proposed method easily copes of with nonlinear constraints. Further the proposed controller is simple, effective and can ensure the desirable overall system performance. The superiority of the proposed approach has been shown by comparing the results with published fuzzy logic controller for the same power systems. The comparison is done using various performance measures like overshoot, settling time and standard error criteria of frequency and tie-line power deviation following a 1% step load perturbation in hydro area. It is noticed that, the dynamic performance of proposed controller is better than fuzzy logic controller. Furthermore, it is also seen that the proposed system is robust and is not affected by change in the system parameters.
Abstract: A new elastic-viscoplastic (EVP) constitutive model is proposed for the analysis of time-dependent behavior of clay. The proposed model is based on the bounding surface plasticity and the concept of viscoplastic consistency framework to establish continuous transition from plasticity to rate dependent viscoplasticity. Unlike the overstress based models, this model will meet the consistency condition in formulating the constitutive equation for EVP model. The procedure of deriving the constitutive relationship is also presented. Simulation results and comparisons with experimental data are then presented to demonstrate the performance of the model.
Abstract: The work involves develops attended by a numerical
execution of the eXtend Finite Element Method premises a
measurement by the fracture process cracked so many cracked plates
an application will be processed for the calculation of the stress
intensity factor SIF. In the first we give in statically part the
distribution of stress, displacement field and strain of composite plate
in two cases uncrack/edge crack, also in dynamical part the first six
modes shape. Secondly, we calculate Stress Intensity Factor SIF for
different orientation angle θ of central crack with length (2a=0.4mm)
in plan strain condition, KI and KII are obtained for mode I and mode
II respectively using X-FEM method. Finally from crack inclined
involving mixed modes results, the comparison we chose dangerous
inclination and the best crack angle when K is minimal.
Abstract: The concept of competitiveness is currently very
frequently used term. However, the interpretation of its essence is
different. In this paper, one of the many concepts of competitiveness
will be analyzed and that is macroeconomic competitiveness, which
is understood as a process, which is based on the productivity growth
through the growth of key macroeconomic indicators such as
standards of living and employment, where all of these variables
must have a sustainable basis. Given the competition is a relative
quantity it must be constantly compared with the development of
competitiveness in other economies or regions. And this comparison
method is also used in the article that compares the macrocompetitiveness
of selected economies of the European Economic
Area – the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Switzerland and
Germany. The aim of the paper is to verify the hypothesis concerning
the direct correlation between the size of the economy and its
competitiveness.
Abstract: Diabetic retinopathy is characterized by the development of retinal microaneurysms. The damage can be prevented if disease is treated in its early stages. In this paper, we are comparing Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Naïve Bayes (NB) classifiers for automatic microaneurysm detection in images acquired through non-dilated pupils. The Nearest Neighbor classifier is used as a baseline for comparison. Detected microaneurysms are validated with expert ophthalmologists’ hand-drawn ground-truths. The sensitivity, specificity, precision and accuracy of each method are also compared.
Abstract: This paper presents the implementation of Artificial Bees Colony (ABC) algorithm in solving Directional OverCurrent Relays (DOCRs) coordination problem for near-end faults occurring in fixed network topology. The coordination optimization of DOCRs is formulated as linear programming (LP) problem. The objective function is introduced to minimize the operating time of the associated relay which depends on the time multiplier setting. The proposed technique is to taken as a technique for comparison purpose in order to highlight its superiority. The proposed algorithms have been tested successfully on 8 bus test system. The simulation results demonstrated that the ABC algorithm which has been proved to have good search ability is capable in dealing with constraint optimization problems.
