Abstract: Memristor is also known as the fourth fundamental
passive circuit element. When current flows in one direction through
the device, the electrical resistance increases and when current flows
in the opposite direction, the resistance decreases. When the current
is stopped, the component retains the last resistance that it had, and
when the flow of charge starts again, the resistance of the circuit will
be what it was when it was last active. It behaves as a nonlinear
resistor with memory. Recently memristors have generated wide
research interest and have found many applications. In this paper we
survey the various applications of memristors which include non
volatile memory, nanoelectronic memories, computer logic,
neuromorphic computer architectures low power remote sensing
applications, crossbar latches as transistor replacements, analog
computations and switches.
Abstract: Computed tomography (CT) dosimetry normally uses
an ionization chamber 100 mm long to estimate the computed
tomography dose index (CTDI), however some reports have already
indicated that small devices could replace the long ion chamber to
improve quality assurance procedures in CT dosimetry. This paper
presents a novel dosimetry system based in a commercial
phototransistor evaluated for CT dosimetry. Three detector
configurations were developed for this system: with a single, two and
four devices. Dose profile measurements were obtained with them
and their angular response were evaluated. The results showed that
the novel dosimetry system with the phototransistor could be an
alternative for CT dosimetry. It allows to obtain the CT dose profile
in details and also to estimate the CTDI in longer length than the
100 mm pencil chamber. The angular response showed that the one
device detector configuration is the most adequate among the three
configurations analyzed in this study.
Abstract: There are little subjects in macroeconomics that are so
widely discussed, but at the same time controversial and without a
clear solution such as the choice of exchange rate regime. National
authorities need to take into consideration numerous fundamentals,
trying to fulfil goals of economic growth, low and stable inflation
and international stability. This paper focuses on the countries of ex-
Yugoslavia and their exchange rate history as independent states. We
follow the development of the regimes in 6 countries during the
transition through the financial crisis of the second part of the 2000s
to the prospects of their final goal: full membership in the European
Union. Main question is to what extent has the exchange regime
contributed to their economic success, considering other objective
factors.
Abstract: This paper investigates experimentally and
analytically the torsion behavior of steel fibered high strength self
compacting concrete beams reinforced by GFRP bars. Steel fibered
high strength self compacting concrete (SFHSSCC) and GFRP bars
became in the recent decades a very important materials in the
structural engineering field. The use of GFRP bars to replace steel
bars has emerged as one of the many techniques put forward to
enhance the corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete structures.
High strength concrete and GFRP bars attract designers and
architects as it allows improving the durability as well as the esthetics
of a construction. One of the trends in SFHSSCC structures is to
provide their ductile behavior and additional goal is to limit
development and propagation of macro-cracks in the body of
SFHSSCC elements. SFHSSCC and GFRP bars are tough, improve
the workability, enhance the corrosion resistance of reinforced
concrete structures, and demonstrate high residual strengths after
appearance of the first crack. Experimental studies were carried out
to select effective fiber contents. Three types of volume fraction from
hooked shape steel fibers are used in this study, the hooked steel
fibers were evaluated in volume fractions ranging between 0.0%,
0.75% and 1.5%. The beams shape is chosen to create the required
forces (i.e. torsion and bending moments simultaneously) on the test
zone. A total of seven beams were tested, classified into three groups.
All beams, have 200cm length, cross section of 10×20cm,
longitudinal bottom reinforcement of 3
Abstract: This paper discusses a method for improving accuracy
of fuzzy-rule-based classifiers using particle swarm optimization
(PSO). Two different fuzzy classifiers are considered and optimized.
The first classifier is based on Mamdani fuzzy inference system
(M_PSO fuzzy classifier). The second classifier is based on Takagi-
Sugeno fuzzy inference system (TS_PSO fuzzy classifier). The
parameters of the proposed fuzzy classifiers including premise
(antecedent) parameters, consequent parameters and structure of
fuzzy rules are optimized using PSO. Experimental results show that
higher classification accuracy can be obtained with a lower number
of fuzzy rules by using the proposed PSO fuzzy classifiers. The
performances of M_PSO and TS_PSO fuzzy classifiers are compared
to other fuzzy based classifiers
Abstract: Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) was used as a
solvent to extract oil from wheat bran. Extractions were carried out in a
semi-batch process at temperatures ranging from 40 to 60ºC and
pressures ranging from 10 to 30 MPa, with a carbon dioxide (CO2)
flow rate of 26.81 g/min. The oil obtained from wheat bran at different
extraction conditions was quantitatively measured to investigate the
solubility of oil in SC-CO2. The solubility of wheat bran oil was found
to be enhanced in high temperature and pressure. The composition of
fatty acids in wheat bran oil was measured by gas chromatography
(GC). Linoleic, palmitic, oleic and γ-linolenic acid were the major
fatty acids of wheat bran oil. Tocopherol contents in oil were analyzed
by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The highest
amount of phenolics and tocopherols (α and β) were found at
temperature of 60ºC and pressure of 30 MPa.
Abstract: In this paper, a new robust audio fingerprinting
algorithm in MP3 compressed domain is proposed with high
robustness to time scale modification (TSM). Instead of simply
employing short-term information of the MP3 stream, the new
algorithm extracts the long-term features in MP3 compressed domain
by using the modulation frequency analysis. Our experiment has
demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve a hit rate of
above 95% in audio retrieval and resist the attack of 20% TSM. It has
lower bit error rate (BER) performance compared to the other
algorithms. The proposed algorithm can also be used in other
compressed domains, such as AAC.
Abstract: Meshless Finite Element Methods, namely element-free Galerkin and point-interpolation method were implemented and tested concerning their applicability to typical engineering problems like electrical fields and structural mechanics. A class-structure was developed which allows a consistent implementation of these methods together with classical FEM in a common framework. Strengths and weaknesses of the methods under investigation are discussed. As a result of this work joint usage of meshless methods together with classical Finite Elements are recommended.
Abstract: The paper deals with the comparison study of
harmonic detection methods for a shunt active power filter. The
%THD and the power factor value at the PCC point after
compensation are considered for the comparison. There are three
harmonic detection methods used in the paper that are synchronous
reference frame method, synchronous detection method, and DQ axis
with Fourier method. In addition, the ideal current source is used to
represent the active power filter by assuming an infinitely fast
controller action of the active power filter. The simulation results
show that the DQ axis with Fourier method provides the minimum
%THD after compensation compared with other methods. However,
the power factor value at the PCC point after compensation is slightly
lower than that of synchronous detection method.
Abstract: This paper proposes a visual cryptography by random
grids scheme with identifiable shares. The method encodes an image
O in two shares that exhibits the following features: (1) each generated
share has the same scale as O, (2) any share singly has noise-like
appearance that reveals no secret information on O, (3) the secrets can
be revealed by superimposing the two shares, (4) folding a share up
can disclose some identification patterns, and (5) both of the secret
information and the designated identification patterns are recognized
by naked eye without any computation. The property to show up
identification patterns on folded shares establishes a simple and
friendly interface for users to manage the numerous shares created by
VC schemes.
Abstract: The result of process of territory-s development is the territory-s state of development (TSoD), which is pointed towards the provision and improvement of people-s life conditions. The authors offer to measure the TSoD according to their own developed model. Using the available statistical data regarding the values of model-s elements, the authors empirically show which element mainly determines the TSoD. The findings of the research showed that the key elements of the TSoD are the “Material welfare of people" and “People-s health". Performing a deeper statistical analysis of correlation between these elements, it turned out that it is not so necessary for a country to be bent on trying to increase the material growth of a territory, because a relatively high index of life expectancy at birth could be ensured also by much more modest material resources. On the other hand, the economical feedback of longer lifespan within countries with lower material performance is also relatively low.
Abstract: Thermal water hammer is a special type of water
hammer which rarely occurs in heat exchangers. In biphasic fluids, if
steam bubbles are surrounded by condensate, regarding lower
condensate temperature than steam, they will suddenly collapse. As a
result, the vacuum caused by an extreme change in volume lead to
movement of the condensates in all directions and their collision the
force produced by this collision leads to a severe stress in the pipe
wall. This phenomenon is a special type of water hammer. According
to fluid mechanics, this phenomenon is a particular type of transient
flows during which abrupt change of fluid leads to sudden pressure
change inside the tube. In this paper, the mechanism of abrupt failure
of 80 tubes of 481 tubes of a methanol heat exchanger is discussed.
Initially, due to excessive temperature differences between heat
transfer fluids and simultaneous failure of 80 tubes, thermal shock
was presupposed as the reason of failure. Deeper investigation on
cross-section of failed tubes showed that failure was, ductile type of
failure, so the first hypothesis was rejected. Further analysis and more
accurate experiments revealed that failure of tubes caused by thermal
water hammer. Finally, the causes of thermal water hammer and
various solutions to avoid such mechanism are discussed.

extracted from Sambucus nigra fruit, using an experimental arterial
hypertension pattern, as well as their influence on the oxidative
stress. The results reveal the normalization of the reduced glutathion
concentration, as well as a considerable reduction in the
malondialdehide serum concentration by the polyphenolic protection.
The rat blood pressure values were recorded using a CODATM
system, which uses a non-invasive blood pressure measuring method.
All the measured blood pressure components revealed a biostatistically

Abstract: Rural areas of Tanzania are still disadvantaged in terms of diffusion of IP-based services; this is due to lack of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures, especially lack of connectivity. One of the limitations for connectivity problems in rural areas of Tanzania is the high cost to establish infrastructures for IP-based services [1-2]. However the cost of connectivity varies from one technology to the other and at the same time, the cost is also different from one operator (service provider) to another within the country. This paper presents development of software system to calculate cost of connectivity to rural areas of Tanzania. The system is developed to make an easy access of connectivity cost from different technologies and different operators. The development of the calculator follows the V-model software development lifecycle. The calculator is used to evaluate the economic viability of different technologies considered as being potential candidates to provide rural connectivity. In this paper, the evaluation is based on the techno-economic analysis approach.
Abstract: In this paper, mesh-free element free Galerkin (EFG) method is extended to solve two-dimensional potential flow problems. Two ideal fluid flow problems (i.e. flow over a rigid cylinder and flow over a sphere) have been formulated using variational approach. Penalty and Lagrange multiplier techniques have been utilized for the enforcement of essential boundary conditions. Four point Gauss quadrature have been used for the integration on two-dimensional domain (Ω) and nodal integration scheme has been used to enforce the essential boundary conditions on the edges (┌). The results obtained by EFG method are compared with those obtained by finite element method. The effects of scaling and penalty parameters on EFG results have also been discussed in detail.
Abstract: A direct downconversion receiver implemented in 0.13 μm 1P8M process is presented. The circuit is formed by a single-end LNA, an active balun for conversion into balanced mode, a quadrature double-balanced passive switch mixer and a quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator. The receiver operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band and complies with IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee) specifications. The circuit exhibits a very low noise figure of only 2.27 dB and dissipates only 14.6 mW with a 1.2 V supply voltage and is hence suitable for low-power applications.
Abstract: In this paper, a fragile watermarking scheme is proposed for color image specified object-s authentication. The color image is first transformed from RGB to YST color space, suitable for watermarking the color media. The T channel corresponds to the chrominance component of a color image andYS ÔèÑ T , therefore selected for embedding the watermark. The T channel is first divided into 2×2 non-overlapping blocks and the two LSBs are set to zero. The object that is to be authenticated is also divided into 2×2 nonoverlapping blocks and each block-s intensity mean is computed followed by eight bit encoding. The generated watermark is then embedded into T channel randomly selected 2×2 block-s LSBs using 2D-Torus Automorphism. Selection of block size is paramount for exact localization and recovery of work. The proposed scheme is blind, efficient and secure with ability to detect and locate even minor tampering applied to the image with full recovery of original work. The quality of watermarked media is quite high both subjectively and objectively. The technique is suitable for class of images with format such as gif, tif or bitmap.
Abstract: Polyurethane foam (PUF) is formed by a chemical
reaction of polyol and isocyanate. The aim is to understand the
impact of Silicone on synthesizing polyurethane in differentiate
volume of molding. The method used was one step process, which is
simultaneously caried out a blending polyol (petroleum polyol and
soybean polyol), a TDI (2,4):MDI (4,4-) (80:20), a distilled water,
and a silicone. The properties of the material were measured via a
number of parameters, which are polymer density, compressive
strength, and cellular structures. It is found that density of
polyurethane using silicone with volume of molding either 250 ml or
500 ml is lower than without using silicone.
Abstract: Natural ventilation has played an important role for
many low energy-building designs. It has been also noticed as a
essential subject to persistently bring the fresh cool air from the
outside into a building. This study carried out the computational fluid
dynamics (CFD)-based simulations to examine the natural ventilation
development of a work area in a public building. The simulated results
can be useful to better understand the indoor microclimate and the
interaction of wind with buildings. Besides, this CFD simulation
procedure can serve as an effective analysis tool to characterize the
airing performance, and thereby optimize the building ventilation for
strengthening the architects, planners and other decision makers on
improving the natural ventilation design of public buildings.
Abstract: The influence of humidity and low temperature on the α- amylase activity and isoenzyme composition of grains of different wheat varieties have been studied. The identified samples of varieties have significant difference in the level of enzyme induction under the impact of high humidity and low temperature. It is proposed to use this methodological approach for testing genotypes and wheat breeding lines for resistance to pre-harvest sprouting (PHS).
