Abstract: An experimental study of Reinforced Concrete, RC, columns strengthened using a steel jacketing technique was conducted. The jacketing technique consisted of four steel vertical angles installed at the corners of the column joined by horizontal steel straps confining the column externally. The effectiveness of the technique was evaluated by testing the RC column specimens under eccentric monotonic loading until failure occurred. Strain gauges were installed to monitor the strains in the internal reinforcement as well as the external jacketing system. The effectiveness of the jacketing technique was demonstrated, and the parameters affecting the technique were studied.
Abstract: The availability of broadband internet and increased
access to computers has been instrumental in the rise of internet
literacy in Malaysia. This development has led to the adoption of
online shopping by many Malaysians. On another note, the
Government has supported the development and production of local
herbal products. This has resulted in an increase in the production and
diversity of products by SMEs. The purpose of this study is to
evaluate the influence of the Malaysian demographic factors and
selected attitudinal characteristics in relation to the online purchasing
of herbal products. In total, 1054 internet users were interviewed
online and Chi-square analysis was used to determine the relationship
between demographic variables and different aspects of online
shopping for herbal products. The overall results show that the
demographic variables such as age, gender, education level, income
and ethnicity were significant when considering the online shopping
antecedents of trust, quality of herbal products, perceived risks and
perceived benefits.
Abstract: Although the STL (stereo lithography) file format is
widely used as a de facto industry standard in the rapid prototyping
industry due to its simplicity and ability to tessellation of almost all
surfaces, but there are always some defects and shortcoming in their
usage, which many of them are difficult to correct manually. In
processing the complex models, size of the file and its defects grow
extremely, therefore, correcting STL files become difficult. In this
paper through optimizing the exiting algorithms, size of the files and
memory usage of computers to process them will be reduced. In spite
of type and extent of the errors in STL files, the tail-to-head
searching method and analysis of the nearest distance between tails
and heads techniques were used. As a result STL models sliced
rapidly, and fully closed contours produced effectively and errorless.
Abstract: In industrial scale of Gas to Liquid (GTL) process in
Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, a part of reactor outlet gases such as
CO2 and CH4 as side reaction products, is usually recycled. In this
study, the influence of CO2 and CH4 on the performance and
selectivity of Co-Ru/Al2O3 catalyst is investigated by injection of
these gases (0-20 vol. % of feed) to the feed stream. The effect of
temperature and feed flow rate, are also inspected. The results show
that low amounts of CO2 in the feed stream, doesn`t change the
catalyst activity significantly but increasing the amount of CO2 (more
than 10 vol. %) cause the CO conversion to decrease and the
selectivity of heavy components to increase. Methane acts as an inert
gas and doesn`t affect the catalyst performance. Increasing feed flow
rate has negative effect on both CO conversion and heavy component
selectivity. By raising the temperature, CO conversion will increase
but there are more volatile components in the product. The effect of
CO2 on the catalyst deactivation is also investigated carefully and a
mechanism is suggested to explain the negative influence of CO2 on
catalyst deactivation.
Abstract: In sport, human resources management gives special
attention to method of applying volunteers, their maintenance, and
participation of volunteers with each other and management
approaches for better operation of events celebrants. The recognition
of volunteers- characteristics and motives is important to notice,
because it makes the basis of their participation and commitment at
sport environment. The motivation and commitment of 281
volunteers were assessed using the organizational commitment scale,
motivation scale and personal characteristics questionnaire. The
descriptive results showed that; 64% of volunteers were women with
age average 21/24 years old. They were physical education student,
single (71/9%), without occupation (53%) and with average of 5
years sport experience. Their most important motivation was career
factor and the most important commitment factor was normative
factor. The results of examining the hypothesized showed that; age,
sport experience and education are effective in the amount of
volunteers- commitment. And the motive factors such as career,
material, purposive and protective factors also have the power to
predict the amount of sports volunteers- commitment value.
Therefore it is recommended to provide possible opportunities for
volunteers and carrying out appropriate instructional courses by
events executive managers.
Abstract: Nowadays, consumption of whole flours and flours
with high extraction rate is recommended, because of their high
amount of fibers, vitamins and minerals. Despite nutritional benefits
of whole flour, concentration of some undesirable components such
as phytic acid is higher than white flour. In this study, effect of
several lactic acid bacteria sourdough on Toast bread is investigated.
Sourdough from lactic acid bacteria (Lb. plantarum, Lb. reuteri) with
different dough yield (250 and 300) is made and incubated at 30°C
for 20 hour, then added to dough in the ratio of 10, 20 and 30%
replacement. Breads that supplemented with Lb. plantarum
sourdough had lower phytic acid. Higher replacement of sourdough
and higher DY cause higher decrease in phytic acid content.
Sourdough from Lb. plantarum, DY = 300 and 30% replacement
cause the highest decrease in phytic acid content (49.63 mg/100g).
As indicated by panelists, Lb. reuteri sourdough can present the
greatest effect on overall quality score of the breads. DY reduction
cause a decrease in bread quality score. Sensory score of Toast bread
is 81.71 in the samples that treated with Lb. reuteri sourdough with
DY = 250 and 20% replacement.
Abstract: This paper describes a 3D modeling system in
Augmented Reality environment, named 3DARModeler. It can be
considered a simple version of 3D Studio Max with necessary
functions for a modeling system such as creating objects, applying
texture, adding animation, estimating real light sources and casting
shadows. The 3DARModeler introduces convenient, and effective
human-computer interaction to build 3D models by combining both
the traditional input method (mouse/keyboard) and the tangible input
method (markers). It has the ability to align a new virtual object with
the existing parts of a model. The 3DARModeler targets nontechnical
users. As such, they do not need much knowledge of
computer graphics and modeling techniques. All they have to do is
select basic objects, customize their attributes, and put them together
to build a 3D model in a simple and intuitive way as if they were
doing in the real world. Using the hierarchical modeling technique,
the users are able to group several basic objects to manage them as a
unified, complex object. The system can also connect with other 3D
systems by importing and exporting VRML/3Ds Max files. A
module of speech recognition is included in the system to provide
flexible user interfaces.
Abstract: Recent financial international scandals around the world have led to a number of investigations into the effectiveness of corporate governance practices and audit quality. Although evidence of corporate governance practices and audit quality exists from developed economies, very scanty studies have been conducted in Egypt where corporate governance is just evolving. Therefore, this study provides evidence on the effectiveness of corporate governance practices and audit quality from a developing country. The data for analysis are gathered from the top 50 most active companies in the Egyptian Stock Exchange, covering the three year period 2007-2009. Logistic regression was used in investigating the questions that were raised in the study. Findings from the study show that board independence; CEO duality and audit committees significantly have relationship with audit quality. The results also, indicate that institutional investor and managerial ownership have no significantly relationship with audit quality. Evidence also exist that size of the company; complexity and business leverage are important factors in audit quality for companies quoted on the Egypt Stock Exchange.
Abstract: The effect of different combinations of response
feedback on the performance of active control system on nonlinear
frames has been studied in this paper. To this end different feedback
combinations including displacement, velocity, acceleration and full
response feedback have been utilized in controlling the response of
an eight story bilinear hysteretic frame which has been subjected to a
white noise excitation and controlled by eight actuators which could
fully control the frame. For active control of nonlinear frame
Newmark nonlinear instantaneous optimal control algorithm has been
used which a diagonal matrix has been selected for weighting
matrices in performance index. For optimal design of active control
system while the objective has been to reduce the maximum drift to
below the yielding level, Distributed Genetic Algorithm (DGA) has
been used to determine the proper set of weighting matrices. The
criteria to assess the effect of each combination of response feedback
have been the minimum required control force to reduce the
maximum drift to below the yielding drift. The results of numerical
simulation show that the performance of active control system is
dependent on the type of response feedback where the velocity
feedback is more effective in designing optimal control system in
comparison with displacement and acceleration feedback. Also using
full feedback of response in controller design leads to minimum
control force amongst other combinations. Also the distributed
genetic algorithm shows acceptable convergence speed in solving the
optimization problem of designing active control systems.
Abstract: Scale defects are common surface defects in hot steel rolling. The modelling of such defects is problematic and their causes are not straightforward. In this study, we investigated genetic algorithms in search for a mathematical solution to scale formation. For this research, a high-dimensional data set from hot steel rolling process was gathered. The synchronisation of the variables as well as the allocation of the measurements made on the steel strip were solved before the modelling phase.
Abstract: This paper introduces a new instantaneous frequency
computation approach -Counting Instantaneous Frequency for a
general class of signals called simple waves. The classsimple wave
contains a wide range of continuous signals for which the concept
instantaneous frequency has a perfect physical sense. The concept of
-Counting Instantaneous Frequency also applies to all the discrete data.
For all the simple wave signals and the discrete data, -Counting
instantaneous frequency can be computed directly without signal
decomposition process. The intrinsic mode functions obtained through
empirical mode decomposition belongs to simple wave. So
-Counting instantaneous frequency can be used together with
empirical mode decomposition.
Abstract: The indoor airflow with a mixed natural/forced convection
was numerically calculated using the laminar and turbulent
approach. The Boussinesq approximation was considered for a simplification
of the mathematical model and calculations. The results
obtained, such as mean velocity fields, were successfully compared
with experimental PIV flow visualizations. The effect of the distance
between the cooled wall and the heat exchanger on the temperature
and velocity distributions was calculated. In a room with a simple
shape, the computational code OpenFOAM demonstrated an ability to
numerically predict flow patterns. Furthermore, numerical techniques,
boundary type conditions and the computational grid quality were
examined. Calculations using the turbulence model k-omega had a
significant effect on the results influencing temperature and velocity
distributions.
Abstract: Field experiments were conducted at Annamalai University Experimental Farm, Department of Agronomy; to device suitable weed control measures for direct seeded puddled rice and to study the effect of the weed control measures on the soil microbial population. The treatments comprised of incorporation of pressmud @ 6.25 t ha-1 and application of herbicide butachlor @1.5 kg a. i. ha- 1 with and without safener 4 days after sowing (DAS), 8 DAS alone and also in conjunction with hand weeding at 30 DAS. Hand weeding twice and a weedy check were also maintained. At maximum tillering stage, the population of bacteria was significantly reduced by butachlor application. The injury to microbes caused by herbicide disappeared with the advancement of crop's age and at flowering stage of crop, there was no significant difference among the treatments. The fungal and actinomycetes population remained unaltered by weed control treatments at both the stages of observation.
Abstract: The birdhouses and dovecotes, which are the indicator
of naturalness and human-animal relationship, are one of the
traditional cultural values of Turkey. With their structures compatible
with nature and respectful to humans the bird houses and dovecotes,
which have an important position in local urbanization models as a
representative of the civil architecture with their unique form and
function are important subjects that should be evaluated in a wide
frame comprising from architecture to urbanism, from ecologic
agriculture to globalization. The traditional bird houses and
dovecotes are disregarded due to the insensitivity affecting the city
life and the change in the public sense of art. In this study, the
characteristic properties of traditional dovecotes and birdhouses,
started in 13th century and ended in 19th century in Anatolia, are
tried to be defined for the sustainability of the tradition and for giving
a new direction to the designers.
Abstract: To investigate the behavior of sheet metals during
forming tailor welded blanks (TWB) of various thickness made via
Co2 Laser welding are under consideration. These blanks are formed
used two different forming methods of rubber as well as the
conventional punch and die methods. The main research objective is
the effects of using a rubber die instead of a solid one the
displacement of the weld line and the press force needed for forming.
Specimens with thicknesses of 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1mm are subjected to
Erichsen two dimensional tests and the resulted force for each case
are compared. This is followed by a theoretical and numerical study
of press force and weld line displacement. It is concluded that using
rubber pad forming (RPF) causes a reduction in weld line
displacement and an increase in the press force.
Abstract: Pearson-s correlation coefficient and sequential path
analysis has been used for determining the interrelationship among
yield, yield components, soil minerals and aroma of Khao Dawk Mali
(KDML) 105 rice grown in the area of Tungkularonghai in Roi-Et
province, located in the northeast of Thailand. Pearson-s correlation
coefficient in this study showed that the number of panicles was the
only factor that had positive significant (0.790**) effect on grain
yield. Sequential path analysis revealed that the number of panicles
followed by the number of fertile spikelets and 100-grain weight
were the first-order factors which had positive direct effects on grain
yield. Whereas, other factors analyzed had indirect effects
influencing grain yield. This study also indicated that no significant
relationship was found between the aroma level and any of the
factors analyzed.
Abstract: Company mergers and acquisitions reached their peak
in the twenty-first century. Mergers and acquisitions have become one
of the competitive strategies for external growth. In general, it is
believed that mergers and acquisitions can create synergies. However,
they require complete information technology system and service
integration, especially in the banking industry. Much of the research
has focused on performance evaluation, shareholder equity allocation,
or even the increase of company market value after the merger and
acquisition, whereas few scholars have focused on information system
integration post merger and acquisition. This study indicates the role
of information systems after a merger and acquisition, explaining the
benefits of information system integration using a merger and
acquisition case in the banking industry as an example. In addition, we
discuss factors that affect the performance of information system
integration, and utilize system dynamics to interpret the relationship
among factors that affect information system integration performance
in the banking industry after a merger and acquisition.
Abstract: The number of users supported in a DS-CDMA
cellular system is typically less than spreading factor (N), and the
system is said to be underloaded. Overloading is a technique to
accommodate more number of users than the spreading factor N. In
O/O overloading scheme, the first set is assigned to the N
synchronous users and the second set is assigned to the additional
synchronous users. An iterative multistage soft decision interference
cancellation (SDIC) receiver is used to remove high level of
interference between the two sets. Performance is evaluated in terms
of the maximum number acceptable users so that the system
performance is degraded slightly compared to the single user
performance at a specified BER. In this paper, the capacity of CDMA
based O/O overloading scheme is evaluated with SDIC receiver. It is
observed that O/O scheme using orthogonal Gold codes provides
25% channel overloading (N=64) for synchronous DS-CDMA
system on an AWGN channel in the uplink at a BER of 1e-5.For a
Rayleigh faded channel, the critical capacity is 40% at a BER of 5e-5
assuming synchronous users. But in practical systems, perfect chip
timing is very difficult to maintain in the uplink.. We have shown that
the overloading performance reduces to 11% for a timing
synchronization error of 0.02Tc for a BER of 1e-5.
Abstract: An effective approach for unbalanced three-phase
distribution power flow solutions is proposed in this paper. The
special topological characteristics of distribution networks have been
fully utilized to make the direct solution possible. Two matrices–the
bus-injection to branch-current matrix and the branch-current to busvoltage
matrix– and a simple matrix multiplication are used to
obtain power flow solutions. Due to the distinctive solution
techniques of the proposed method, the time-consuming LU
decomposition and forward/backward substitution of the Jacobian
matrix or admittance matrix required in the traditional power flow
methods are no longer necessary. Therefore, the proposed method is
robust and time-efficient. Test results demonstrate the validity of the
proposed method. The proposed method shows great potential to be
used in distribution automation applications.
Abstract: Constant upgrading of Enterprise Resource Planning
(ERP) systems is necessary, but can cause new defects. This paper
attempts to model the likelihood of defects after completed upgrades
with Weibull defect probability density function (PDF). A case study
is presented analyzing data of recorded defects obtained for one ERP
subsystem. The trends are observed for the value of the parameters
relevant to the proposed statistical Weibull distribution for a given
one year period. As a result, the ability to predict the appearance of
defects after the next upgrade is described.
