Abstract: Recently, lots of researchers are attracted to retrieving
multimedia database by using some impression words and their values.
Ikezoe-s research is one of the representatives and uses eight pairs of
opposite impression words. We had modified its retrieval interface and
proposed '2D-RIB' in the previous work. The aim of the present paper
is to improve his/her satisfaction level to the retrieval result in the
2D-RIB. Our method is to extend the 2D-RIB. One of our extensions is
to define and introduce the following two measures: 'melody
goodness' and 'general acceptance'. Another extension is three types
of customization menus. The result of evaluation using a pilot system
is as follows. Both of these two measures 'melody goodness'
and -general acceptance- can contribute to the improvement.
Moreover, it is effective if we introduce the customization menu
which enables a retrieval person to reduce the strictness level of
retrieval condition in an impression pair based on his/her need.
Abstract: The paper discusses optimising work on a method of processing ceramic / metal composite coatings for various applications and is based on preliminary work on processing anodes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The composite coating is manufactured by the electroless co-deposition of nickel and yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) simultaneously on to a ceramic substrate. The effect on coating characteristics of substrate surface treatments and electroless nickel bath parameters such as pH and agitation methods are also investigated. Characterisation of the resulting deposit by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) is also discussed.
Abstract: The paper proposes a methodology to process the signals coming from the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in order to identify the pathology and evaluate the therapy to treat the patients affected by demency diseases. In particular, a fuzzy model is developed to identify the demency of the patients affected by Subcortical Ischemic Vascular Dementia and to measure the positive effect, if any, of a repetitive TMS on their motor performances. A tool is also presented to support the mentioned analysis.
Abstract: This paper introduces a novel design for boring bar with enhanced damping capability. The principle followed in the design phase was to enhance the damping capability minimizing the loss in static stiffness through implementation of composite material interfaces. The newly designed tool has been compared to a conventional tool. The evaluation criteria were the dynamic characteristics, frequency and damping ratio, of the machining system, as well as the surface roughness of the machined workpieces. The use of composite material in the design of damped tool has been demonstrated effective. Furthermore, the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models presented in this paper take into consideration the interaction between the elastic structure of the machine tool and the cutting process and can therefore be used to characterize the machining system in operational conditions.
Abstract: In the Equivalent Transformation (ET) computation
model, a program is constructed by the successive accumulation of
ET rules. A method by meta-computation by which a correct ET
rule is generated has been proposed. Although the method covers a
broad range in the generation of ET rules, all important ET rules
are not necessarily generated. Generation of more ET rules can be
achieved by supplementing generation methods which are specialized
for important ET rules. A Specialization-by-Equation (Speq) rule is
one of those important rules. A Speq rule describes a procedure in
which two variables included in an atom conjunction are equalized
due to predicate constraints. In this paper, we propose an algorithm
that systematically and recursively generate Speq rules and discuss
its effectiveness in the synthesis of ET programs. A Speq rule is
generated based on proof of a logical formula consisting of given
atom set and dis-equality. The proof is carried out by utilizing some
ET rules and the ultimately obtained rules in generating Speq rules.

extent of implementation of HR practices in the firm. These results
show that HR practices that are in line with the organization’s
strategic goals are important for future performance.
Abstract: Experiments were carried out at the Latvia State
Institute of Fruit-Growing in 2011. Fresh-cut minimally processed
apple and pear mixed salad were packed by passive modified
atmosphere (MAP) in PP containers, which were hermetically sealed
by breathable conventional BOPP PropafreshTM P2GAF, and Amcor
Agrifresh films. Biodegradable NatureFlexTM NVS INNOVIA Films
and VC999 BioPack PLA films coated with a barrier of pure silicon
oxide (SiOx) were used to compare the fresh-cut produce quality
with this packed in conventional packaging films. Samples were cold
stored at temperature +4.0±0.5 °C up to 10 days. The quality of salad
was evaluated by physicochemical properties – weight losses,
moisture, firmness, the effect of packaging modes on the colour,
dynamics in headspace atmosphere concentration (CO2 and O2),
titratable acidity values, as well as by microbiological contamination
(yeasts, moulds and total bacteria count) of salads, analyzing before
packaging and after 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 storage days.
Abstract: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition
which affects 2-3% of population around the world. Psoriasis Area
and Severity Index (PASI) is a gold standard to assess psoriasis
severity as well as the treatment efficacy. Although a gold standard,
PASI is rarely used because it is tedious and complex. In practice,
PASI score is determined subjectively by dermatologists, therefore
inter and intra variations of assessment are possible to happen even
among expert dermatologists. This research develops an algorithm to
assess psoriasis lesion for PASI scoring objectively. Focus of this
research is thickness assessment as one of PASI four parameters
beside area, erythema and scaliness. Psoriasis lesion thickness is
measured by averaging the total elevation from lesion base to lesion
surface. Thickness values of 122 3D images taken from 39 patients
are grouped into 4 PASI thickness score using K-means clustering.
Validation on lesion base construction is performed using twelve
body curvature models and show good result with coefficient of
determinant (R2) is equal to 1.
Abstract: In this paper, application of artificial neural networks
in typical disease diagnosis has been investigated. The real procedure
of medical diagnosis which usually is employed by physicians was
analyzed and converted to a machine implementable format. Then
after selecting some symptoms of eight different diseases, a data set
contains the information of a few hundreds cases was configured and
applied to a MLP neural network. The results of the experiments and
also the advantages of using a fuzzy approach were discussed as
well. Outcomes suggest the role of effective symptoms selection and
the advantages of data fuzzificaton on a neural networks-based
automatic medical diagnosis system.
Abstract: The most common domestic birds live in Turkey are: crows (Corvus corone), pigeons (Columba livia), sparrows (Passer domesticus), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and blackbirds (Turdus merula). These birds give damage to the agricultural areas and make dirty the human life areas. In order to send away these birds, some different materials and methods such as chemicals, treatments, colored lights, flash and audible scarers are used. It is possible to see many studies about chemical methods in the literatures. However there is not enough works regarding audible bird scarers are reported in the literature. Therefore, a solar powered bird scarer was designed, manufactured and tested in this experimental investigation. Firstly, to understand the sensitive level of these domestic birds against to the audible scarer, many series preliminary studies were conducted. These studies showed that crows are the most resistant against to the audible bird scarer when compared with pigeons, sparrows, starlings and blackbirds. Therefore the solar powered audible bird scarer was tested on crows. The scarer was tested about one month during April- May, 2007. 18 different common known predators- sounds (voices or calls) of domestic birds from Falcon (Falco eleonorae), Falcon (Buteo lagopus), Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Montagu-s harrier (Circus pygargus) and Owl (Glaucidium passerinum) were selected for test of the scarer. It was seen from the results that the reaction of the birds was changed depending on the predators- sound type, camouflage of the scarer, sound quality and volume, loudspeaker play and pause periods in one application. In addition, it was also seen that the sound from Falcon (Buteo lagopus) was most effective on crows and the scarer was enough efficient.
Abstract: One of the essential sectors of Myanmar economy is
agriculture which is sensitive to climate variation. The most
important climatic element which impacts on agriculture sector is
rainfall. Thus rainfall prediction becomes an important issue in
agriculture country. Multi variables polynomial regression (MPR)
provides an effective way to describe complex nonlinear input output
relationships so that an outcome variable can be predicted from the
other or others. In this paper, the modeling of monthly rainfall
prediction over Myanmar is described in detail by applying the
polynomial regression equation. The proposed model results are
compared to the results produced by multiple linear regression model
(MLR). Experiments indicate that the prediction model based on
MPR has higher accuracy than using MLR.
Abstract: This work proposes an approach to address automatic
text summarization. This approach is a trainable summarizer, which
takes into account several features, including sentence position,
positive keyword, negative keyword, sentence centrality, sentence
resemblance to the title, sentence inclusion of name entity, sentence
inclusion of numerical data, sentence relative length, Bushy path of
the sentence and aggregated similarity for each sentence to generate
summaries. First we investigate the effect of each sentence feature on
the summarization task. Then we use all features score function to
train genetic algorithm (GA) and mathematical regression (MR)
models to obtain a suitable combination of feature weights. The
proposed approach performance is measured at several compression
rates on a data corpus composed of 100 English religious articles.
The results of the proposed approach are promising.
Abstract: In the paper an effective context based lossless coding
technique is presented. Three principal and few auxiliary contexts are
defined. The predictor adaptation technique is an improved CoBALP
algorithm, denoted CoBALP+. Cumulated predictor error combining
8 bias estimators is calculated. It is shown experimentally that
indeed, the new technique is time-effective while it outperforms the
well known methods having reasonable time complexity, and is
inferior only to extremely computationally complex ones.
Abstract: To study the effect of suitable methods for
propagation of True Potato Seed (TPS) progenies, transplant and
selection of the best progenies, a factorial experiment base on a
randomized complete block design was carried out in the research
field of Sahneh region, Kermanshah, Iran during 2009-2010. Five
selective progenies from CIP (International Potato Center) including
CIP.994013, CIP.994002, CIP.994014, CIP.888006, and
CIP.994001 and two transplant preparation methods (Paper pot
preparation for mechanical cultivation and preparation in transplant
trays for manual cultivation) were studied in three replications.
Results showed that different progenies had no significant effect on
plant height (cm) and tuber yield (t ha-1), whereas had a significant
effect on number of tubers per unit area (m2). There was significant
difference between transplant preparation methods for plant height
and tuber yield. The interaction effect of progenies and transplant
preparation method was not significant for these traits. CIP.888006
progeny and paper pot preparation method produced the highest
tuber yields. Also CIP.994002 and CIP.994014 progenies considered
as the best progenies under paper pot preparation method due to high
yields.
Abstract: Text document categorization involves large amount
of data or features. The high dimensionality of features is a
troublesome and can affect the performance of the classification.
Therefore, feature selection is strongly considered as one of the
crucial part in text document categorization. Selecting the best
features to represent documents can reduce the dimensionality of
feature space hence increase the performance. There were many
approaches has been implemented by various researchers to
overcome this problem. This paper proposed a novel hybrid approach
for feature selection in text document categorization based on Ant
Colony Optimization (ACO) and Information Gain (IG). We also
presented state-of-the-art algorithms by several other researchers.
Abstract: This paper argues that fostering mutual understanding in landscape planning is as much about the planners educating stakeholder groups as the stakeholders educating the planners. In other words it is an epistemological agreement as to the meaning and nature of place, especially where an effort is made to go beyond the quantitative aspects, which can be achieved by the phenomenological experience of the Virtual Reality (VR) environment. This education needs to be a bi-directional process in which distance can be both temporal as well as spatial separation of participants, that there needs to be a common framework of understanding in which neither 'side' is disadvantaged during the process of information exchange and it follows that a medium such as VR offers an effective way of overcoming some of the shortcomings of traditional media by taking advantage of continuing technological advances in Information, Technology and Communications (ITC). In this paper we make particular reference to this as an extension to Geographical Information Systems (GIS). VR as a two-way communication tool offers considerable potential particularly in the area of Public Participation GIS (PPGIS). Information rich virtual environments that can operate over broadband networks are now possible and thus allow for the representation of large amounts of qualitative and quantitative information 'side-by-side'. Therefore, with broadband access becoming standard for households and enterprises alike, distributed virtual reality environments have great potential to contribute to enabling stakeholder participation and mutual learning within the planning context.
Abstract: The purpose of the article is to illustrate the main
characteristics of the corporate governance challenge facing the
countries of South-Eastern Europe (SEE) and to subsequently
determine and assess the extensiveness and effectiveness of corporate
governance regulations in these countries. Therefore, we start with an
overview on the subject of the key problems of corporate governance
in transition. We then address the issue of corporate governance
measurement for SEE countries. To this end, we include a review of
the methodological framework for determining both the
extensiveness and the effectiveness of corporate governance
legislation. We then focus on the actual analysis of the quality of
corporate governance codes, as well as of legal institutions
effectiveness and provide a measure of corporate governance in
Romania and other SEE emerging markets. The paper concludes by
emphasizing the corporate governance enforcement gap and by
identifying research issues that require further study.
Abstract: Requirements management is critical to software
delivery success and project lifecycle. Requirements management
and their traceability provide assistance for many software
engineering activities like impact analysis, coverage analysis,
requirements validation and regression testing. In addition
requirements traceability is the recognized component of many
software process improvement initiatives. Requirements traceability
also helps to control and manage evolution of a software system.
This paper aims to provide an evaluation of current requirements
management and traceability tools. Management and test managers
require an appropriate tool for the software under test. We hope,
evaluation identified here will help to select the efficient and
effective tool.
Abstract: Medical image segmentation based on image smoothing followed by edge detection assumes a great degree of importance in the field of Image Processing. In this regard, this paper proposes a novel algorithm for medical image segmentation based on vigorous smoothening by identifying the type of noise and edge diction ideology which seems to be a boom in medical image diagnosis. The main objective of this algorithm is to consider a particular medical image as input and make the preprocessing to remove the noise content by employing suitable filter after identifying the type of noise and finally carrying out edge detection for image segmentation. The algorithm consists of three parts. First, identifying the type of noise present in the medical image as additive, multiplicative or impulsive by analysis of local histograms and denoising it by employing Median, Gaussian or Frost filter. Second, edge detection of the filtered medical image is carried out using Canny edge detection technique. And third part is about the segmentation of edge detected medical image by the method of Normalized Cut Eigen Vectors. The method is validated through experiments on real images. The proposed algorithm has been simulated on MATLAB platform. The results obtained by the simulation shows that the proposed algorithm is very effective which can deal with low quality or marginal vague images which has high spatial redundancy, low contrast and biggish noise, and has a potential of certain practical use of medical image diagnosis.
