Abstract: This paper presents an exact pruning algorithm with
adaptive pruning interval for general dynamic neural networks
(GDNN). GDNNs are artificial neural networks with internal dynamics.
All layers have feedback connections with time delays to the
same and to all other layers. The structure of the plant is unknown, so
the identification process is started with a larger network architecture
than necessary. During parameter optimization with the Levenberg-
Marquardt (LM) algorithm irrelevant weights of the dynamic neural
network are deleted in order to find a model for the plant as
simple as possible. The weights to be pruned are found by direct
evaluation of the training data within a sliding time window. The
influence of pruning on the identification system depends on the
network architecture at pruning time and the selected weight to be
deleted. As the architecture of the model is changed drastically during
the identification and pruning process, it is suggested to adapt the
pruning interval online. Two system identification examples show
the architecture selection ability of the proposed pruning approach.
Abstract: In the oil and gas industry, energy prediction can help
the distributor and customer to forecast the outgoing and incoming
gas through the pipeline. It will also help to eliminate any
uncertainties in gas metering for billing purposes. The objective of
this paper is to develop Neural Network Model for energy
consumption and analyze the performance model. This paper
provides a comprehensive review on published research on the
energy consumption prediction which focuses on structures and the
parameters used in developing Neural Network models. This paper is
then focused on the parameter selection of the neural network
prediction model development for energy consumption and analysis
on the result. The most reliable model that gives the most accurate
result is proposed for the prediction. The result shows that the
proposed neural network energy prediction model is able to
demonstrate an adequate performance with least Root Mean Square
Error.
Abstract: In this article, we propose a methodology for the
characterization of the suspended matter along Algiers-s bay. An
approach by multi layers perceptron (MLP) with training by back
propagation of the gradient optimized by the algorithm of Levenberg
Marquardt (LM) is used. The accent was put on the choice of the
components of the base of training where a comparative study made
for four methods: Random and three alternatives of classification by
K-Means. The samples are taken from suspended matter image,
obtained by analytical model based on polynomial regression by
taking account of in situ measurements. The mask which selects the
zone of interest (water in our case) was carried out by using a multi
spectral classification by ISODATA algorithm. To improve the
result of classification, a cleaning of this mask was carried out using
the tools of mathematical morphology. The results of this study
presented in the forms of curves, tables and of images show the
founded good of our methodology.
Abstract: For a quick and accurate calculation of spatial neutron
distribution in nuclear power reactors 3D nodal codes are usually
used aiming at solving the neutron diffusion equation for a given
reactor core geometry and material composition. These codes use a
second order polynomial to represent the transverse leakage term. In
this work, a nodal method based on the well known nodal expansion
method (NEM), developed at COPPE, making use of this polynomial
expansion was modified to treat the transverse leakage term for the
external surfaces of peripheral reflector nodes.
The proposed method was implemented into a computational
system which, besides solving the diffusion equation, also solves the
burnup equations governing the gradual changes in material
compositions of the core due to fuel depletion. Results confirm the
effectiveness of this modified treatment of peripheral nodes for
practical purposes in PWR reactors.
Abstract: In this study four Holstein steers with rumen fistula
fed 7 kg of dry matter (DM) of diets differing in concentrate to
alfalfa hay ratios as 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, and 90:10 in a 4 × 4 latin
square design. The pH of the ruminal fluid was measured before
the morning feeding (0.0 h) to 8 h post feeding. In this study, a
two-layered feed-forward neural network trained by the
Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used for modelling of ruminal
pH. The input variables of the network were time, concentrate to
alfalfa hay ratios (C/F), non fiber carbohydrate (NFC) and neutral
detergent fiber (NDF). The output variable was the ruminal pH.
The modeling results showed that there was excellent agreement
between the experimental data and predicted values, with a high
determination coefficient (R2 >0.96). Therefore, we suggest using
these model-derived biological values to summarize continuously
recorded pH data.
Abstract: This paper aims at improving web server performance
by establishing a middleware layer between web and database
servers, which minimizes the overload on the database server. A
middleware system has been developed as a service mainly to
improve the performance. This system manages connection accesses
in a way that would result in reducing the overload on the database
server. In addition to the connection management, this system acts as
an object-oriented model for best utilization of operating system
resources. A web developer can use this Service Broker to improve
web server performance.
Abstract: The textural parameters, together with appearance and
flavor, are sensory attributes of great importance for the product to be
accepted by the consumer. The objective of the present study was the
evaluation of the textural attributes of Packhams pears in the fresh
state, after drying in a chamber with forced convection at 50ºC,
lyophilized and re-hydrated. In texture analysis it was used the
method of Texture Profile Analysis (TPA). The parameters analyzed
were hardness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, elasticity and chewiness.
From the results obtained is possible to see that the drying operation
greatly affected some textural properties of the pears, so that the
hardness diminished very much with drying, for both drying
methods.
Abstract: In this paper back-propagation artificial neural network
(BPANN )with Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is employed to
predict the deformation of the upsetting process. To prepare a
training set for BPANN, some finite element simulations were
carried out. The input data for the artificial neural network are a set
of parameters generated randomly (aspect ratio d/h, material
properties, temperature and coefficient of friction). The output data
are the coefficient of polynomial that fitted on barreling curves.
Neural network was trained using barreling curves generated by
finite element simulations of the upsetting and the corresponding
material parameters. This technique was tested for three different
specimens and can be successfully employed to predict the
deformation of the upsetting process
Abstract: The prospective analysis is presented as an important tool to identify the most relevant opportunities and needs in research and development from planned interventions in innovation systems. This study chose Phyllanthus niruri, known as "stone break" to describe the knowledge about the specie, by using biotechnological forecasting through the software Vantage Point. It can be seen a considerable increase in studies on Phyllanthus niruri in recent years and that there are patents about this plant since twenty-five years ago. India was the country that most carried out research on the specie, showing interest, mainly in studies of hepatoprotection, antioxidant and anti-cancer activities. Brazil is in the second place, with special interest for anti-tumor studies. Given the identification of the Brazilian groups that exploit the species it is possible to mediate partnerships and cooperation aiming to help on the implementing of the Program of Herbal medicines (phytotherapics) in Brazil.
Abstract: Gas chromatography (GC) is the most widely used
technique in analytical chemistry. However, GC has high initial cost
and requires frequent maintenance. This paper examines the
feasibility and potential of using a neural network model as an
alternative whenever GC is unvailable. It can also be part of system
verification on the performance of GC for preventive maintenance
activities. It shows the performance of MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP)
with Backpropagation structure. Results demonstrate that neural
network model when trained using this structure provides an
adequate result and is suitable for this purpose. cm.
Abstract: Network coding has recently attracted attention as an efficient technique in multicast/broadcast services. The problem of finding the optimal network coding mechanism maximizing the bandwidth efficiency is hard to solve and hard to approximate. Lots of network coding-based schemes have been suggested in the literature to improve the bandwidth efficiency, especially network coding-based automatic repeat request (NCARQ) schemes. However, existing schemes have several limitations which cause the performance degradation in resource limited systems. To improve the performance in resource limited systems, we propose NCARQ with overlapping selection (OS-NCARQ) scheme. The advantages of OS-NCARQ scheme over the traditional ARQ scheme and existing NCARQ schemes are shown through the analysis and simulations.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new performance characterization for the test strategy intended for second order filters denominated Transient Analysis Method (TRAM). We evaluate the ability of the addressed test strategy for detecting deviation faults under simultaneous statistical fluctuation of the non-faulty parameters. For this purpose, we use Monte Carlo simulations and a fault model that considers as faulty only one component of the filter under test while the others components adopt random values (within their tolerance band) obtained from their statistical distributions. The new data reported here show (for the filters under study) the presence of hard-to-test components and relatively low fault coverage values for small deviation faults. These results suggest that the fault coverage value obtained using only nominal values for the non-faulty components (the traditional evaluation of TRAM) seem to be a poor predictor of the test performance.
Abstract: Minimization methods for training feed-forward networks with Backpropagation are compared. Feedforward network training is a special case of functional minimization, where no explicit model of the data is assumed. Therefore due to the high dimensionality of the data, linearization of the training problem through use of orthogonal basis functions is not desirable. The focus is functional minimization on any basis. A number of methods based on local gradient and Hessian matrices are discussed. Modifications of many methods of first and second order training methods are considered. Using share rates data, experimentally it is proved that Conjugate gradient and Quasi Newton?s methods outperformed the Gradient Descent methods. In case of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is of special interest in financial forecasting.
Abstract: Renewable energy resources are inexhaustible, clean as compared with conventional resources. Also, it is used to supply regions with no grid, no telephone lines, and often with difficult accessibility by common transport. Satellite earth stations which located in remote areas are the most important application of renewable energy. Neural control is a branch of the general field of intelligent control, which is based on the concept of artificial intelligence. This paper presents the mathematical modeling of satellite earth station power system which is required for simulating the system.Aswan is selected to be the site under consideration because it is a rich region with solar energy. The complete power system is simulated using MATLAB–SIMULINK.An artificial neural network (ANN) based model has been developed for the optimum operation of earth station power system. An ANN is trained using a back propagation with Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. The best validation performance is obtained for minimum mean square error. The regression between the network output and the corresponding target is equal to 96% which means a high accuracy. Neural network controller architecture gives satisfactory results with small number of neurons, hence better in terms of memory and time are required for NNC implementation. The results indicate that the proposed control unit using ANN can be successfully used for controlling the satellite earth station power system.
Abstract: Financial forecasting is an example of signal processing problems. A number of ways to train/learn the network are available. We have used Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for error back-propagation for weight adjustment. Pre-processing of data has reduced much of the variation at large scale to small scale, reducing the variation of training data.
Abstract: In the last few years, the Semantic Web gained scientific acceptance as a means of relationships identification in knowledge base, widely known by semantic association. Query about complex relationships between entities is a strong requirement for many applications in analytical domains. In bioinformatics for example, it is critical to extract exchanges between proteins. Currently, the widely known result of such queries is to provide paths between connected entities from data graph. However, they do not always give good results while facing the user need by the best association or a set of limited best association, because they only consider all existing paths but ignore the path evaluation. In this paper, we present an approach for supporting association discovery queries. Our proposal includes (i) a query language PmSPRQL which provides a multiparadigm query expressions for association extraction and (ii) some quantification measures making easy the process of association ranking. The originality of our proposal is demonstrated by a performance evaluation of our approach on real world datasets.
Abstract: In this paper a modification on Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for MLP neural network learning is proposed. The proposed algorithm has good convergence. This method reduces the amount of oscillation in learning procedure. An example is given to show usefulness of this method. Finally a simulation verifies the results of proposed method.
Abstract: A new approach based on the consideration that electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are chaotic signals was presented for automated diagnosis of electroencephalographic changes. This consideration was tested successfully using the nonlinear dynamics tools, like the computation of Lyapunov exponents. This paper presented the usage of statistics over the set of the Lyapunov exponents in order to reduce the dimensionality of the extracted feature vectors. Since classification is more accurate when the pattern is simplified through representation by important features, feature extraction and selection play an important role in classifying systems such as neural networks. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) architectures were formulated and used as basis for detection of electroencephalographic changes. Three types of EEG signals (EEG signals recorded from healthy volunteers with eyes open, epilepsy patients in the epileptogenic zone during a seizure-free interval, and epilepsy patients during epileptic seizures) were classified. The selected Lyapunov exponents of the EEG signals were used as inputs of the MLPNN trained with Levenberg- Marquardt algorithm. The classification results confirmed that the proposed MLPNN has potential in detecting the electroencephalographic changes.
Abstract: Ionic liquids are well known as green solvents, reaction media and catalysis. Here, three different sulfonic acid functional ionic liquids prepared in the laboratory are used as catalysts in alkylation of p-cresol with tert-butyl alcohol. The kinetics on each of the catalysts was compared and a kinetic model was developed based on the product distribution over these catalysts. The kinetic parameters were estimated using Marquadt's algorithm to minimize the error function. The Arrhenius plots show a curvature which is best interpreted by the extended Arrhenius equation.
Abstract: This paper presents a critical study about the
application of Neural Networks to ion-exchange process. Ionexchange
is a complex non-linear process involving many factors
influencing the ions uptake mechanisms from the pregnant solution.
The following step includes the elution. Published data presents
empirical isotherm equations with definite shortcomings resulting in
unreliable predictions. Although Neural Network simulation
technique encounters a number of disadvantages including its “black
box", and a limited ability to explicitly identify possible causal
relationships, it has the advantage to implicitly handle complex
nonlinear relationships between dependent and independent
variables. In the present paper, the Neural Network model based on
the back-propagation algorithm Levenberg-Marquardt was developed
using a three layer approach with a tangent sigmoid transfer function
(tansig) at hidden layer with 11 neurons and linear transfer function
(purelin) at out layer. The above mentioned approach has been used
to test the effectiveness in simulating ion exchange processes. The
modeling results showed that there is an excellent agreement between
the experimental data and the predicted values of copper ions
removed from aqueous solutions.
