Abstract: In recent years, the number of document data has been
increasing since the spread of the Internet. Many methods have been
studied for extracting topics from large document data. We proposed
Independent Topic Analysis (ITA) to extract topics independent of
each other from large document data such as newspaper data. ITA is a
method for extracting the independent topics from the document data
by using the Independent Component Analysis. The topic represented
by ITA is represented by a set of words. However, the set of words
is quite different from the topics the user imagines. For example,
the top five words with high independence of a topic are as follows.
Topic1 = {"scor", "game", "lead", "quarter", "rebound"}. This Topic
1 is considered to represent the topic of "SPORTS". This topic name
"SPORTS" has to be attached by the user. ITA cannot name topics.
Therefore, in this research, we propose a method to obtain topics easy
for people to understand by using the web search engine, topics given
by the set of words given by independent topic analysis. In particular,
we search a set of topical words, and the title of the homepage of
the search result is taken as the topic name. And we also use the
proposed method for some data and verify its effectiveness.
Abstract: In the operation of power transformers of 110 kV/MV from substations, these are traveled by fault current resulting from MV line damage. Defect electrical contacts are heated when they are travelled from fault currents. In the case of high temperatures when 135 °C is reached, the electrical insulating oil in the vicinity of the electrical faults comes into contact with these contacts releases gases, and activates the electrical protection. To avoid auto-flammability of electro-insulating oil, we designed a security system thermal of electrical contact defects by pouring fire-resistant polyurethane foam, mastic or mortar fire inside a cardboard electro-insulating cylinder. From practical experience, in the exploitation of power transformers of 110 kV/MT in oil electro-insulating were recorded some passing disconnecting commanded by the gas protection at internal defects. In normal operation and in the optimal load, nominal currents do not require thermal secure contacts inside electrical transformers, contacts are made at the fabrication according to the projects or to repair by solder. In the case of external short circuits close to the substation, the contacts inside electrical transformers, even if they are well made in sizes of Rcontact = 10‑6 Ω, are subjected to short-circuit currents of the order of 10 kA-20 kA which lead to the dissipation of some significant second-order electric powers, 100 W-400 W, on contact. At some internal or external factors which action on electrical contacts, including electrodynamic efforts at short-circuits, these factors could be degraded over time to values in the range of 10-4 Ω to 10-5 Ω and if the action time of protection is great, on the order of seconds, power dissipation on electrical contacts achieve high values of 1,0 kW to 40,0 kW. This power leads to strong local heating, hundreds of degrees Celsius and can initiate self-ignition and burning oil in the vicinity of electro-insulating contacts with action the gas relay. Degradation of electrical contacts inside power transformers may not be limited for the duration of their operation. In order to avoid oil burn with gas release near electrical contacts, at short-circuit currents 10 kA-20 kA, we have outlined the following solutions: covering electrical contacts in fireproof materials that would avoid direct burn oil at short circuit and transmission of heat from electrical contact along the conductors with heat dissipation gradually over time, in a large volume of cooling. Flame retardant materials are: polyurethane foam, mastic, cement (concrete). In the normal condition of operation of transformer, insulating of conductors coils is with paper and insulating oil. Ignition points of its two components respectively are approximated: 135 °C heat for oil and 200 0C for paper. In the case of a faulty electrical contact, about 10-3 Ω, at short-circuit; the temperature can reach for a short time, a value of 300 °C-400 °C, which ignite the paper and also the oil. By burning oil, there are local gases that disconnect the power transformer. Securing thermal electrical contacts inside the transformer, in cardboard tube with polyurethane foams, mastik or cement, ensures avoiding gas release and also gas protection working.
Abstract: Shear elastic modulus of skeletal muscles can be
obtained by shear wave elastography (SWE) and has been
linearly related to muscle force. However, SWE is currently
implemented using array probes. Price and volumes of these probes
and their driving equipment prevent SWE from being used in
wearable human-machine interfaces (HMI). Moreover, beamforming
processing for array probes reduces the real-time performance. To
achieve SWE by wearable HMIs, a customized three-element probe
is adopted in this work, with one element for acoustic radiation
force generation and the others for shear wave tracking. In-phase
quadrature demodulation and 2D autocorrelation are adopted to
estimate velocities of tissues on the sound beams of the latter two
elements. Shear wave speeds are calculated by phase shift between
the tissue velocities. Three agar phantoms with different elasticities
were made by changing the weights of agar. Values of the shear
elastic modulus of the phantoms were measured as 8.98, 23.06 and
36.74 kPa at a depth of 7.5 mm respectively. This work verifies the
feasibility of measuring shear elastic modulus by wearable devices.
Abstract: This paper compares the multipath mitigation
performance of code correlation reference waveform receivers
with variable and fixed window width, for binary offset carrier
and multiplexed binary offset carrier signals typically used in
global navigation satellite systems. In the variable window width
method, such width is iteratively reduced until the distortion on
the discriminator with multipath is eliminated. This distortion is
measured as the Euclidean distance between the actual discriminator
(obtained with the incoming signal), and the local discriminator
(generated with a local copy of the signal). The variable window
width have shown better performance compared to the fixed window
width. In particular, the former yields zero error for all delays for
the BOC and MBOC signals considered, while the latter gives
rather large nonzero errors for small delays in all cases. Due to
its computational simplicity, the variable window width method is
perfectly suitable for implementation in low-cost receivers.
Abstract: A two-dimensional finite volume axisymmetric model is developed to predict the simultaneous heat and mass transfers during the drying of industrial sludge. The simulations were run using COMSOL-Multiphysics 3.5a. The input parameters of the numerical model were acquired from a preliminary experimental work. Results permit to establish correlations describing the evolution of the various parameters as a function of the drying temperature and the sludge water content. The selection and coupling of the equation are validated based on the drying kinetics acquired experimentally at a temperature range of 45-65 °C and absolute pressure range of 200-1000 mbar. The model, incorporating the heat and mass transfer mechanisms at different operating conditions, shows simulated values of temperature and water content. Simulated results are found concordant with the experimental values, only at the first and last drying stages where sludge shrinkage is insignificant. Simulated and experimental results show that sludge drying is favored at high temperatures and low pressure. As experimentally observed, the drying time is reduced by 68% for drying at 65 °C compared to 45 °C under 1 atm. At 65 °C, a 200-mbar absolute pressure vacuum leads to an additional reduction in drying time estimated by 61%. However, the drying rate is underestimated in the intermediate stage. This rate underestimation could be improved in the model by considering the shrinkage phenomena that occurs during sludge drying.
Abstract: People with speech disorders may rely on augmentative
and alternative communication (AAC) technologies to help them
communicate. However, the limitations of the current AAC
technologies act as barriers to the optimal use of these technologies in
daily communication settings. The ability to communicate effectively
relies on a number of factors that are not limited to the intelligibility
of the spoken words. In fact, non-verbal cues play a critical role in
the correct comprehension of messages and having to rely on verbal
communication only, as is the case with current AAC technology,
may contribute to problems in communication. This is especially true
for people’s ability to express their feelings and emotions, which are
communicated to a large part through non-verbal cues. This paper
focuses on understanding more about the non-verbal communication
ability of people with dysarthria, with the overarching aim of this
research being to improve AAC technology by allowing people
with dysarthria to better communicate emotions. Preliminary survey
results are presented that gives an understanding of how people with
dysarthria convey emotions, what emotions that are important for
them to get across, what emotions that are difficult for them to convey,
and whether there is a difference in communicating emotions when
speaking to familiar versus unfamiliar people.
Abstract: In fields such as neuroscience and especially in cognition modeling of mental processes, uncertainty processing in temporal zone of signal is vital. In this paper, Bayesian online inferences in estimation of change-points location in signal are constructed. This method separated the observed signal into independent series and studies the change and variation of the regime of data locally with related statistical characteristics. We give conditions on simulations of the method when the data characteristics of signals vary, and provide empirical evidence to show the performance of method. It is verified that correlation between series around the change point location and its characteristics such as Signal to Noise Ratios and mean value of signal has important factor on fluctuating in finding proper location of change point. And one of the main contributions of this study is related to representing of these influences of signal statistical characteristics for finding abrupt variation in signal. There are two different structures for simulations which in first case one abrupt change in temporal section of signal is considered with variable position and secondly multiple variations are considered. Finally, influence of statistical characteristic for changing the location of change point is explained in details in simulation results with different artificial signals.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to compare and discuss better classifier algorithm options for credit risk assessment by applying different Machine Learning techniques. Using records from a Brazilian financial institution, this study uses a database of 5,432 companies that are clients of the bank, where 2,600 clients are classified as non-defaulters, 1,551 are classified as defaulters and 1,281 are temporarily defaulters, meaning that the clients are overdue on their payments for up 180 days. For each case, a total of 15 attributes was considered for a one-against-all assessment using four different techniques: Artificial Neural Networks Multilayer Perceptron (ANN-MLP), Artificial Neural Networks Radial Basis Functions (ANN-RBF), Logistic Regression (LR) and finally Support Vector Machines (SVM). For each method, different parameters were analyzed in order to obtain different results when the best of each technique was compared. Initially the data were coded in thermometer code (numerical attributes) or dummy coding (for nominal attributes). The methods were then evaluated for each parameter and the best result of each technique was compared in terms of accuracy, false positives, false negatives, true positives and true negatives. This comparison showed that the best method, in terms of accuracy, was ANN-RBF (79.20% for non-defaulter classification, 97.74% for defaulters and 75.37% for the temporarily defaulter classification). However, the best accuracy does not always represent the best technique. For instance, on the classification of temporarily defaulters, this technique, in terms of false positives, was surpassed by SVM, which had the lowest rate (0.07%) of false positive classifications. All these intrinsic details are discussed considering the results found, and an overview of what was presented is shown in the conclusion of this study.
Abstract: Low gear noise is an important sound quality feature in modern passenger cars. Annoying gear noise from the gearbox is influenced by the gear design, gearbox shaft layout, manufacturing deviations in the components, assembly errors and the mounting arrangement of the complete gearbox. Geometrical deviations in the form of profile and lead errors are often present on the flanks of the inspected gears. Ghost frequencies of a gear are very challenging to identify in standard gear measurement and analysis process due to small wavelengths involved. In this paper, gear whine noise occurring at non-integral multiples of gear mesh frequency of passenger car gearbox is investigated and the root cause is identified using the displacement deviation analysis (DDA) method. DDA method is applied to identify ghost frequency excitations on the flanks of gears arising out of generation grinding. Frequency identified through DDA correlated with the frequency of vibration and noise on the end-of-line machine as well as vehicle level measurements. With the application of DDA method along with standard lead profile measurement, gears with ghost frequency geometry deviations were identified on the production line to eliminate defective parts and thereby eliminate ghost frequency noise from a vehicle. Further, displacement deviation analysis can be used in conjunction with the manufacturing process simulation to arrive at suitable countermeasures for arresting the ghost frequency.
Abstract: We propose to record Activities of Daily Living
(ADLs) of elderly people using a vision-based system so as to provide
better assistive and personalization technologies. Current ADL-related
research is based on data collected with help from non-elderly subjects
in laboratory environments and the activities performed are predetermined
for the sole purpose of data collection. To obtain more
realistic datasets for the application, we recorded ADLs for the elderly
with data collected from real-world environment involving real elderly
subjects. Motivated by the need to collect data for more effective
research related to elderly care, we chose to collect data in the room of
an elderly person. Specifically, we installed Kinect, a vision-based
sensor on the ceiling, to capture the activities that the elderly subject
performs in the morning every day. Based on the data, we identified
12 morning activities that the elderly person performs daily. To
recognize these activities, we created a HARELCARE framework to
investigate into the effectiveness of existing Human Activity
Recognition (HAR) algorithms and propose the use of a transfer
learning algorithm for HAR. We compared the performance, in terms
of accuracy, and training progress. Although the collected dataset is
relatively small, the proposed algorithm has a good potential to be
applied to all daily routine activities for healthcare purposes such as
evidence-based diagnosis and treatment.
Abstract: In sports, individuals and teams are typically interested
in final rankings. Final results, such as times or distances, dictate
these rankings, also known as places. Places can be further associated
with ordered random variables, commonly referred to as order
statistics. In this work, we introduce a simple, yet accurate order
statistical ordinal regression function that predicts relay race places
with changeover-times. We call this function the Fenton-Wilkinson
Order Statistics model. This model is built on the following educated
assumption: individual leg-times follow log-normal distributions.
Moreover, our key idea is to utilize Fenton-Wilkinson approximations
of changeover-times alongside an estimator for the total number
of teams as in the notorious German tank problem. This original
place regression function is sigmoidal and thus correctly predicts
the existence of a small number of elite teams that significantly
outperform the rest of the teams. Our model also describes how place
increases linearly with changeover-time at the inflection point of the
log-normal distribution function. With real-world data from Jukola
2019, a massive orienteering relay race, the model is shown to be
highly accurate even when the size of the training set is only 5%
of the whole data set. Numerical results also show that our model
exhibits smaller place prediction root-mean-square-errors than linear
regression, mord regression and Gaussian process regression.
Abstract: Solar panels that use photovoltaic (PV) cells are popular
for converting solar radiation into electricity. One of the major
problems impacting the performance of PV panels is the overheating
caused by excessive solar radiation and high ambient temperatures,
which degrades the efficiency of the PV panels remarkably. To
overcome this issue, an aluminum heat sink was used to dissipate
unwanted heat from PV cells. The dimensions of the heat sink were
determined considering the optimal fin spacing that fulfils hot climatic
conditions. In this study, the effects of cooling on the efficiency
and power output of a PV panel were studied experimentally. Two
PV modules were used: one without and one with a heat sink. The
experiments ran for 11 hours from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. where
temperature readings in the rear and front of both PV modules were
recorded at an interval of 15 minutes using sensors and an Arduino
microprocessor. Results are recorded for both panels simultaneously
for analysis, temperate comparison, and for power and efficiency
calculations. A maximum increase in the solar to electrical conversion
efficiency of 35% and almost 55% in the power output were achieved
with the use of a heat sink, while temperatures at the front and back
of the panel were reduced by 9% and 11%, respectively.
Abstract: In recent decades, the analysis of the effects of clustering as an essential factor for the development of innovations and the competitiveness of enterprises has raised great interest in different areas. Nowadays, companies have access to almost all tangible and intangible resources located and/or developed in any country in the world. However, despite the obvious advantages that this situation entails for companies, their geographical location has shown itself, increasingly clearly, to be a fundamental factor that positively influences their innovative performance and competitiveness. Industrial clusters could represent a unique level of analysis, positioned between the individual company and the industry, which makes them an ideal unit of analysis to determine the effects derived from company membership of a cluster. Also, the absorptive capacity (hereinafter 'AC') can mediate the process of innovation development by companies located in a cluster. The transformation and exploitation of knowledge could have a mediating effect between knowledge acquisition and innovative performance. The main objective of this work is to determine the key factors that affect the degree of generation and use of knowledge from the environment by companies and, consequently, their innovative performance and competitiveness. The elements analyzed are the companies' membership of a cluster and the AC. To this end, 30 most relevant papers published on this subject in the "Web of Science" database have been reviewed. Our findings show that, within a cluster, the knowledge coming from the companies' environment can significantly influence their innovative performance and competitiveness, although in this relationship, the degree of access and exploitation of the companies to this knowledge plays a fundamental role, which depends on a series of elements both internal and external to the company.
Abstract: School districts throughout the United States are constantly seeking measures to improve test scores, reduce school absenteeism and improve indoor environmental quality. It is imperative to identify key building investments which will provide the largest benefits to schools in terms of improving the aforementioned factors. This study uses Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests to statistically evaluate the impact of a school building’s mechanical and plumbing characteristics on a child’s educational performance. The educational performance is measured via three indicators, i.e. test scores, suspensions, and absenteeism. The study investigated 125 New York City school facilities to determine the potential correlations between 50 mechanical and plumbing variables and the performance indicators. Key findings from the tests revealed that elementary schools with pneumatic systems in “good” condition have 48.8% lower percentages of students scoring at the minimum English Language Arts (ELA) competency level compared with those with no pneumatic system. Additionally, elementary schools with “unit heaters/cabinet heaters” in “good to fair” conditions have 1.1% higher attendance rates compared to schools with no “unit heaters/cabinet heaters” or those in inferior condition. Furthermore, elementary schools with air conditioning have 0.6% higher attendance rates compared to schools with no air conditioning, and those with interior floor drains in “good” condition have 1.8% higher attendance rates compared to schools with interior drains in inferior condition.
Abstract: This study aims to investigate the amount of energy (economic wave energy potential) that can be obtained from the existing wave energy converters in the high wave energy potential region of the Black Sea in terms of wave energy potential and their performance at different depths in the region. The data needed for this purpose were obtained using the calibrated nested layered SWAN wave modeling program version 41.01AB, which was forced with Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) winds from 1979 to 2009. The wave dataset at a time interval of 2 hours was accumulated for a sub-grid domain for around Karaburun beach in Arnavutkoy, a district of Istanbul city. The annual sea state characteristic matrices for the five different depths along with a vertical line to the coastline were calculated for 31 years. According to the power matrices of different wave energy converter systems and characteristic matrices for each possible installation depth, the probability distribution tables of the specified mean wave period or wave energy period and significant wave height were calculated. Then, by using the relationship between these distribution tables, according to the present wave climate, the energy that the wave energy converter systems at each depth can produce was determined. Thus, the economically feasible potential of the relevant coastal zone was revealed, and the effect of different depths on energy converter systems is presented. The Oceantic at 50, 75 and 100 m depths and Oyster at 5 and 25 m depths presents the best performance. In the 31-year long period 1998 the most and 1989 is the least dynamic year.
Abstract: Cotton, as a strategic crop, plays an important role in providing human food and clothing need, because of its oil, protein, and fiber. Iran has been one of the largest cotton producers in the world in the past, but unfortunately, for economic reasons, its production is reduced now. One of the ways to reduce the cost of cotton production is to expand the mechanization of cotton harvesting. Iranian farmers do not accept the function of cotton harvesters. One reason for this lack of acceptance of cotton harvesting machines is the number of field losses on these machines. So, the majority of cotton fields are harvested by hand. Although the correct setting of the harvesting machine is very important in the cotton losses, the morphological properties of the cotton plant also affect the performance of cotton harvesters. In this study, the effect of some cotton morphological properties such as the height of the cotton plant, number, and length of sympodial and monopodial branches, boll dimensions, boll weight, number of carpels and bracts angle were evaluated on the performance of cotton picker. In this research, the efficiency of John Deere 9920 spindle Cotton picker is investigated on five different Iranian cotton cultivars. The results indicate that there was a significant difference between the five cultivars in terms of machine harvest efficiency. Golestan cultivar showed the best cotton harvester performance with an average of 87.6% of total harvestable seed cotton and Khorshid cultivar had the least cotton harvester performance. The principal component analysis showed that, at 50.76% probability, the cotton picker efficiency is affected by the bracts angle positively and by boll dimensions, the number of carpels and the height of cotton plants negatively. The seed cotton remains (in the plant and on the ground) after harvester in PCA scatter plot were in the same zone with boll dimensions and several carpels.
Abstract: The pressure of scoring higher marks to be able to get admission in a higher ranked institution has become a social stigma for school students. It leads to various social and academic pressures on them, causing psychological anxiety. This undue stress on students sometimes may even steer to aggressive behavior or suicidal tendencies. Human mind is always surrounded by the some desires, emotions and passions, which usually disturbs our mental peace. In such a scenario, we look for a solution that helps in removing all the obstacles of mind and make us mentally peaceful and strong enough to be able to deal with all kind of pressure. Preksha meditation is one such technique which aims at bringing the positive changes for overall transformation of personality. Hence, the present study was undertaken to assess the impact of Preksha Meditation on the academic anxiety on female teenagers. The study was conducted on 120 high school students from the capital city of India. All students were in the age group of 13-15 years. They also belonged to similar social as well as economic status. The sample was equally divided into two groups i.e. experimental group (N = 60) and control group (N = 60). Subjects of the experimental group were given the intervention of Preksha Meditation practice by the trained instructor for one hour per day, six days a week, for three months for the first experimental stage and another three months for the second experimental stage. The subjects of the control group were not assigned any specific type of activity rather they continued doing their normal official activities as usual. The Academic Anxiety Scale was used to collect data during multi-level stages i.e. pre-experimental stage, post-experimental stage phase-I, and post-experimental stage phase-II. The data were statistically analyzed by computing the two-tailed-‘t’ test for inter group comparison and Sandler’s ‘A’ test with alpha = or p < 0.05 for intra-group comparisons. The study concluded that the practice for longer duration of Preksha Meditation practice brings about very significant and beneficial changes in the pattern of academic anxiety.
Abstract: Stainless steel pipelines are crucial components to transportation and storage in the oil and gas industry. However, the rise of random attacks and vandalism on these pipes for their valuable transport has led to more security and protection for incoming surface impacts. These surface impacts can lead to large global deformations of the pipe and place the pipe under strain, causing the eventual failure of the pipeline. Therefore, understanding how these surface impact loads affect the pipes is vital to improving the pipes’ security and protection. In this study, experimental test and finite element analysis (FEA) have been carried out on EN3B stainless steel specimens to study the impact behaviour. Low velocity impact tests at 9 m/s with 16 kg dome impactor was used to simulate for high momentum impact for localised failure. FEA models of clamped and deformable boundaries were modelled to study the effect of the boundaries on the pipes impact behaviour on its impact resistance, using experimental and FEA approach. Comparison of experimental and FE simulation shows good correlation to the deformable boundaries in order to validate the robustness of the FE model to be implemented in pipe models with complex anisotropic structure.
Abstract: The paper investigates the application of the Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to the wheeled robot starting and braking dynamic states. In securing wheeled robot stability as well as minimum starting and braking time, it is important to ensure correct torque distribution as well as proper slope of braking and driving moments. In this paper, a correct movement distribution has been formulated, securing optimum adhesion coefficient and good transversal stability of a wheeled robot. A neural tuner has been proposed to secure the above properties, although most of the attention is attached to the SOM network application. If the delay of the torque application or torque release is not negligible, it is important to change the rising and falling slopes of the torque. The road/surface condition is also paramount in robot dynamic states control. As the road conditions may randomly change in time, application of the SOM network has been suggested in order to classify the actual road conditions.
Abstract: Postural balance plays essential role throughout life in daily activities. Somatosensory, visual and vestibular inputs play the fundamental role in maintaining body equilibrium to balance the posture. The aim of this study was to find out electroencephalography (EEG) responses during balance activity of young people during Sensory Organization Balance Test. The outcome of this study will help to create the fitness and neurorehabilitation plan. 25 young people (25 ± 3.1 years) have been analyzed on Balance Master NeuroCom® with the coupling of Brain Vision 32 electrode wireless EEG system during the Sensory Organization Test. From the results it has been found that the balance score of samples is significantly higher under the influence of somatosensory input as compared to visual and vestibular input (p < 0.05). The EEG between somatosensory and visual input to balance the posture showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) alpha and beta activities during somatosensory input in somatosensory, attention and visual functions of the cortex whereas executive and motor functions of the cerebral cortex showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) alpha EEG activity during the visual input. The results suggest that somatosensory and attention function of the cerebral cortex has alpha and beta activity, respectively high during somatosensory and vestibular input in maintaining balance. In patients with balance impairments both physical and cognitive training, including neurofeedback will be helpful to improve balance abilities.
