Abstract: In this work, Experimental tie-line results and
solubility (binodal) curves were obtained for the ternary systems
(water + acetic acid + methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)), (water +
lactic acid+ methyl isobutyl ketone) at T = 294.15K and atmospheric
pressure. The consistency of the values of the experimental tie-lines
was determined through the Othmer-Tobias and Hands correlations.
For the extraction effectiveness of solvents, the distribution and
selectivity curves were plotted. In addition, these experimental tieline
data were also correlated with NRTL model. The interaction
parameters for the NRTL model were retrieved from the obtained
experimental results by means of a combination of the homotopy
method and the genetic algorithms.
Abstract: Collective action can be an effective means for local development as well as important strategy to enhance livelihoods especially among rural people. This article explores the level of collective action among members of Fishermen-s Wives Group (KUNITA) in Malaysia. KUNITA was established by the Malaysian Fishery Development Authority (LKIM) with an objective to increase the socio-economic status of fishermen-s families. The members who are mostly the wives and daughters of fishermen are strongly encouraged by LKIM to venture into entrepreneurship activities. The objective of this research was to see the level of collective action among members in KUNITA groups in the state of Selangor. The finding shows that high level of collective action among KUNITA members is strongly based on volunteerism. However, the level of cooperation among members in the group is relatively low. The findings present significant challenges for the group in maintaining the sustainability of KUNITA organization.
Abstract: In molecular biology, microarray technology is widely and successfully utilized to efficiently measure gene activity. If working with less studied organisms, methods to design custom-made microarray probes are available. One design criterion is to select probes with minimal melting temperature variances thus ensuring similar hybridization properties. If the microarray application focuses on the investigation of metabolic pathways, it is not necessary to cover the whole genome. It is more efficient to cover each metabolic pathway with a limited number of genes. Firstly, an approach is presented which minimizes the overall melting temperature variance of selected probes for all genes of interest. Secondly, the approach is extended to include the additional constraints of covering all pathways with a limited number of genes while minimizing the overall variance. The new optimization problem is solved by a bottom-up programming approach which reduces the complexity to make it computationally feasible. The new method is exemplary applied for the selection of microarray probes in order to cover all fungal secondary metabolite gene clusters for Aspergillus terreus.
Abstract: This study was set to determine the antimicrobial
activities of brine salting, chlorinated solution, and oil frying
treatments on enteric bacteria and fungi in Rastrineobola argentea
fish from fish landing beaches within L. Victoria basin of western
Kenya. Statistical differences in effectiveness of the different
treatment methods was determined by single factor ANOVA, and
paired two-tail t-Test was performed to compare the differences in
moisture contents before and after storage. Oil fried fish recorded the
lowest microbial loads, sodium chloride at 10% concentration was
the second most effective and chlorinated solution even at 150ppm
was the least effective against the bacteria and fungi in fish. Moisture
contents of the control and treated fish were significantly lower after
storage. These results show that oil frying of fish should be adopted
for processing and preserving Rastrineobola argentea which is the
most abundant and affordable fish species from Lake Victoria.
Abstract: The kinetics of palm oil catalytic cracking over
aluminum containing mesoporous silica Al-MCM-41 (5% Al) was
investigated in a batch autoclave reactor at the temperatures range of
573 – 673 K. The catalyst was prepared by using sol-gel technique
and has been characterized by nitrogen adsorption and x-ray
diffraction methods. Surface area of 1276 m2/g with average pore
diameter of 2.54 nm and pore volume of 0.811 cm3/g was obtained.
The experimental catalytic cracking runs were conducted using 50 g
of oil and 1 g of catalyst. The reaction pressure was recorded at
different time intervals and the data were analyzed using Levenberg-
Marquardt (LM) algorithm using polymath software. The results
show that the reaction order was found to be -1.5 and activation
energy of 3200 J/gmol.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the numerical minimization
of energy functionals in BV (
) (the space of bounded variation
functions) involving total variation for gray-scale 1-dimensional inpainting
problem. Applications are shown by finite element method
and discontinuous Galerkin method for total variation minimization.
We include the numerical examples which show the different recovery
Abstract: The purpose of Grid computing is to utilize
computational power of idle resources which are distributed in
different areas. Given the grid dynamism and its decentralize
resources, there is a need for an efficient scheduler for scheduling
applications. Since task scheduling includes in the NP-hard problems
various researches have focused on invented algorithms especially
the genetic ones. But since genetic is an inherent algorithm which
searches the problem space globally and does not have the efficiency
required for local searching, therefore, its combination with local
searching algorithms can compensate for this shortcomings. The aim
of this paper is to combine the genetic algorithm and GELS (GAGELS)
as a method to solve scheduling problem by which
simultaneously pay attention to two factors of time and number of
missed tasks. Results show that the proposed algorithm can decrease
makespan while minimizing the number of missed tasks compared
with the traditional methods.
Abstract: Among all geo-hydrological relationships, rainfallrunoff
relationship is of utmost importance in any hydrological
investigation and water resource planning. Spatial variation, lag time
involved in obtaining areal estimates for the basin as a whole can
affect the parameterization in design stage as well as in planning
stage. In conventional hydrological processing of data, spatial aspect
is either ignored or interpolated at sub-basin level. Temporal
variation when analysed for different stages can provide clues for its
spatial effectiveness. The interplay of space-time variation at pixel
level can provide better understanding of basin parameters.
Sustenance of design structures for different return periods and their
spatial auto-correlations should be studied at different geographical
scales for better management and planning of water resources.
In order to understand the relative effect of spatio-temporal
variation in hydrological data network, a detailed geo-hydrological
analysis of Betwa river catchment falling in Lower Yamuna Basin is
presented in this paper. Moreover, the exact estimates about the
availability of water in the Betwa river catchment, especially in the
wake of recent Betwa-Ken linkage project, need thorough scientific
investigation for better planning. Therefore, an attempt in this
direction is made here to analyse the existing hydrological and
meteorological data with the help of SPSS, GIS and MS-EXCEL
software. A comparison of spatial and temporal correlations at subcatchment
level in case of upper Betwa reaches has been made to
demonstrate the representativeness of rain gauges. First, flows at
different locations are used to derive correlation and regression
coefficients. Then, long-term normal water yield estimates based on
pixel-wise regression coefficients of rainfall-runoff relationship have
been mapped. The areal values obtained from these maps can
definitely improve upon estimates based on point-based
extrapolations or areal interpolations.
Abstract: Equations with differentials relating to the inverse of an unknown function rather than to the unknown function itself are solved exactly for some special cases and numerically for the general case. Invertibility combined with differentiability over connected domains forces solutions always to be monotone. Numerical function inversion is key to all solution algorithms which either are of a forward type or a fixed point type considering whole approximate solution functions in each iteration. The given considerations are restricted to ordinary differential equations with inverted functions (ODEIs) of first order. Forward type computations, if applicable, admit consistency of order one and, under an additional accuracy condition, convergence of order one.
Abstract: In this paper we present modeling and simulation for
physical vapor deposition for metallic bipolar plates. In the models
we discuss the application of different models to simulate the
transport of chemical reactions of the gas species in the gas chamber.
The so called sputter process is an extremely sensitive process to
deposit thin layers to metallic plates. We have taken into account
lower order models to obtain first results with respect to the gas
fluxes and the kinetics in the chamber.
The model equations can be treated analytically in some
circumstances and complicated multi-dimensional models are solved
numerically with a software-package (UG unstructed grids, see [1]).
Because of multi-scaling and multi-physical behavior of the models,
we discuss adapted schemes to solve more accurate in the different
domains and scales. The results are discussed with physical
experiments to give a valid model for the assumed growth of thin
layers.
Abstract: Rapid progress in process automation and tightening
quality standards result in a growing demand being placed on fault
detection and diagnostics methods to provide both speed and
reliability of motor quality testing. Doubly fed induction generators
are used mainly for wind energy conversion in MW power plants.
This paper presents a detection of an inter turn stator and an open
phase faults, in a doubly fed induction machine whose stator and
rotor are supplied by two pulse width modulation (PWM) inverters.
The method used in this article to detect these faults, is based on
Park-s Vector Approach, using a neural network.
Abstract: Geometry optimizations of metal complexes of Salen(bis(Salicylidene)1,2-ethylenediamine) were carried out at HF and DFT methods employing Lanl2DZ basis set. In this work structural, energies, bond lengths and other physical properties between Mn2+,Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions coordinated by salen–type ligands are examined. All calculations were performed using Gaussian 98W program series. To investigate local aromaticities, NICS were calculated at all centers of rings. The higher the band gap indicating a higher global aromaticity. The possible binding energies have been evaluated. We have evaluated Frequencies and Zero-point energy with freq calculation. The NICS(Nucleous Independent Chemical Shift) Results show Ni(II) complexes are antiaromatic and aromaticites of Mn(II) complexes are larger than Cu(II) complexes. The energy Results show Cu(II) complexes are stability than Mn(II) and Ni(II) complexes.
Abstract: Distillation column is one of the most common
operations in process industries and is while the most expensive unit
of the amount of energy consumption. Many ideas have been
presented in the related literature for optimizing energy consumption
in distillation columns. This paper studies the different heat
integration methods in a distillation column which separate Benzene,
Toluene, Xylene, and C9+. Three schemes of heat integration
including, indirect sequence (IQ), indirect sequence with forward
energy integration (IQF), and indirect sequence with backward
energy integration (IQB) has been studied in this paper. Using
shortcut method these heat integration schemes were simulated with
Aspen HYSYS software and compared with each other with
regarding economic considerations. The result shows that the energy
consumption has been reduced 33% in IQF and 28% in IQB in
comparison with IQ scheme. Also the economic result shows that the
total annual cost has been reduced 12% in IQF and 8% in IQB
regarding with IQ scheme. Therefore, the IQF scheme is most
economic than IQB and IQ scheme.
Abstract: Recent quasi-experimental evaluation of the Canadian Active Labour Market Policies (ALMP) by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) has provided an opportunity to examine alternative methods to estimating the incremental effects of Employment Benefits and Support Measures (EBSMs) on program participants. The focus of this paper is to assess the efficiency and robustness of inverse probability weighting (IPW) relative to kernel matching (KM) in the estimation of program effects. To accomplish this objective, the authors compare pairs of 1,080 estimates, along with their associated standard errors, to assess which type of estimate is generally more efficient and robust. In the interest of practicality, the authorsalso document the computationaltime it took to produce the IPW and KM estimates, respectively.
Abstract: Computers are increasingly being used as educational
tools in elementary/primary schools worldwide. A specific
application of such computer use, is that of multimedia games, where
the aim is to combine pedagogy and entertainment. This study
reports on a case-study whereby an educational multimedia game has
been developed for use by elementary school children. The stages of
the application-s design, implementation and evaluation are
presented. Strengths of the game are identified and discussed, and its
weaknesses are identified, allowing for suggestions for future redesigns.
The results show that the use of games can engage children
in the learning process for longer periods of time with the added
benefit of the entertainment factor.
Abstract: Recently, it is found that telegraph equation is more suitable than ordinary diffusion equation in modelling reaction diffusion for such branches of sciences. In this paper, a numerical solution for the one-dimensional hyperbolic telegraph equation by using the collocation method using the septic splines is proposed. The scheme works in a similar fashion as finite difference methods. Test problems are used to validate our scheme by calculate L2-norm and L∞-norm. The accuracy of the presented method is demonstrated by two test problems. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the exact solutions.
Abstract: This paper discusses a new, systematic approach to
the synthesis of a NP-hard class of non-regenerative Boolean
networks, described by FON[FOFF]={mi}[{Mi}], where for every
mj[Mj]∈{mi}[{Mi}], there exists another mk[Mk]∈{mi}[{Mi}], such
that their Hamming distance HD(mj, mk)=HD(Mj, Mk)=O(n), (where
'n' represents the number of distinct primary inputs). The method
automatically ensures exact minimization for certain important selfdual
functions with 2n-1 points in its one-set. The elements meant for
grouping are determined from a newly proposed weighted incidence
matrix. Then the binary value corresponding to the candidate pair is
correlated with the proposed binary value matrix to enable direct
synthesis. We recommend algebraic factorization operations as a post
processing step to enable reduction in literal count. The algorithm
can be implemented in any high level language and achieves best
cost optimization for the problem dealt with, irrespective of the
number of inputs. For other cases, the method is iterated to
subsequently reduce it to a problem of O(n-1), O(n-2),.... and then
solved. In addition, it leads to optimal results for problems exhibiting
higher degree of adjacency, with a different interpretation of the
heuristic, and the results are comparable with other methods.
In terms of literal cost, at the technology independent stage, the
circuits synthesized using our algorithm enabled net savings over
AOI (AND-OR-Invert) logic, AND-EXOR logic (EXOR Sum-of-
Products or ESOP forms) and AND-OR-EXOR logic by 45.57%,
41.78% and 41.78% respectively for the various problems.
Circuit level simulations were performed for a wide variety of
case studies at 3.3V and 2.5V supply to validate the performance of
the proposed method and the quality of the resulting synthesized
circuits at two different voltage corners. Power estimation was
carried out for a 0.35micron TSMC CMOS process technology. In
comparison with AOI logic, the proposed method enabled mean
savings in power by 42.46%. With respect to AND-EXOR logic, the
proposed method yielded power savings to the tune of 31.88%, while
in comparison with AND-OR-EXOR level networks; average power
savings of 33.23% was obtained.

Abstract: From past many decades human beings are suffering
from plethora of natural disasters. Occurrence of disasters is a
frequent process; it changes conceptual myths as more and more
advancement are made. Although we are living in technological era
but in developing countries like Pakistan disasters are shaped by
socially constructed roles. The need is to understand the most
vulnerable group of society i.e. females; their issues are complex in
nature because of undermined gender status in the society. There is a
need to identify maximum issues regarding females and to enhance
the achievement of millennium development goals (MDGs). Gender
issues are of great concern all around the globe including Pakistan.
Here female visibility in society is low, and also during disasters, the
failure to understand the reality that concentrates on double burden
including productive and reproductive care. Women have to
contribute a lot in society so we need to make them more disaster
resilient. For this non-structural measures like awareness, trainings
and education must be carried out. In rural and in urban settings in
any disaster like earthquake or flood, elements like gender
perspective, their age, physical health, demographic issues contribute
towards vulnerability. In Pakistan the gender issues in disasters were
of less concern before 2005 earthquake and 2010 floods. Significant
achievements are made after 2010 floods when gender and child cell
was created to provide all facilities to women and girls. The aim of
the study is to highlight all necessary facilities in a disaster to build
coping mechanism in females from basic rights till advance level
including education.
Abstract: Several methods have been proposed for color image
compression but the reconstructed image had very low signal to noise
ratio which made it inefficient. This paper describes a lossy
compression technique for color images which overcomes the
drawbacks. The technique works on spatial domain where the pixel
values of RGB planes of the input color image is mapped onto two
dimensional planes. The proposed technique produced better results
than JPEG2000, 2DPCA and a comparative study is reported based
on the image quality measures such as PSNR and MSE.Experiments
on real time images are shown that compare this methodology with
previous ones and demonstrate its advantages.
