Abstract: Fast depth estimation from binocular vision is often
desired for autonomous vehicles, but, most algorithms could not easily
be put into practice because of the much time cost. We present an
image-processing technique that can fast estimate depth image from
binocular vision images. By finding out the lines which present the
best matched area in the disparity space image, the depth can be
estimated. When detecting these lines, an edge-emphasizing filter is
used. The final depth estimation will be presented after the smooth
filter. Our method is a compromise between local methods and global
optimization.
Abstract: The demand of the energy management systems (EMS) set forth by modern power systems requires fast energy management systems. Contingency analysis is among the functions in EMS which is time consuming. In order to handle this limitation, this paper introduces agent based technology in the contingency analysis. The main function of agents is to speed up the performance. Negotiations process in decision making is explained and the issue set forth is the minimization of the operating costs. The IEEE 14 bus system and its line outage have been used in the research and simulation results are presented.
Abstract: The paper outlines the relevance of computational
geometry within the design and production process of architecture.
Based on two case studies, the digital chain - from the initial formfinding
to the final realization of spatial concepts - is discussed in
relation to geometric principles. The association with the fascinating
complexity that can be found in nature and its underlying geometry
was the starting point for both projects presented in the paper. The
translation of abstract geometric principles into a three-dimensional
digital design model – realized in Rhinoceros – was followed by a
process of transformation and optimization of the initial shape that
integrated aesthetic, spatial and structural qualities as well as aspects
of material properties and conditions of production.
Abstract: Heart-s electric field can be measured anywhere on
the surface of the body (ECG). When individuals touch, one person-s
ECG signal can be registered in other person-s EEG and elsewhere
on his body. Now, the aim of this study was to test the hypothesis
that physical contact (hand-holding) of two persons changes their
heart rate variability. Subjects were sixteen healthy female (age: 20-
26) which divided into eight sets. In each sets, we had two friends
that they passed intimacy test of J.sternberg. ECG of two subjects
(each set) acquired for 5 minutes before hand-holding (as control
group) and 5 minutes during they held their hands (as experimental
group). Then heart rate variability signals were extracted from
subjects' ECG and analyzed in linear feature space (time and
frequency domain) and nonlinear feature space. Considering the
results, we conclude that physical contact (hand-holding of two
friends) increases parasympathetic activity, as indicate by increase

Abstract: In this paper a technique for increasing the
convergence rate of fractionally spaced channel equalizer is
proposed. Instead of symbol-spaced updating of the equalizer filter, a
mechanism has been devised to update the filter at a higher rate. This
ensures convergence of the equalizer filter at a higher rate and
therefore less time-consuming. The proposed technique has been
simulated and tested for two-ray modeled channels with various
delay spreads. These channels include minimum-phase and nonminimum-
phase channels. Simulation results suggest that that
proposed technique outperforms the conventional technique of
symbol-spaced updating of equalizer filter.
Abstract: Small satellites have become increasingly popular recently as a means of providing educational institutes with the chance to design, construct, and test their spacecraft from beginning to the possible launch due to the low launching cost. This approach is remarkably cost saving because of the weight and size reduction of such satellites. Weight reduction could be realised by utilising electromagnetic coils solely, instead of different types of actuators. This paper describes the restrictions of using only “Electromagnetic" actuation for 3D stabilisation and how to make the magnetorquer based attitude control feasible using Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). The design is developed to stabilize the spacecraft against gravity gradient disturbances with a three-axis stabilizing capability.
Abstract: The charge-exchange xenon (CEX) ion generated by ion thruster can backflow to the surface of spacecraft and threaten to the safety of spacecraft operation. In order to evaluate the effects of the induced plasma environment in backflow regions on the spacecraft, we designed a spherical single Langmuir probe of 5.8cm in diameter for measuring low-density plasma parameters in backflow region of ion thruster. In practice, the tests are performed in a two-dimensional array (40cm×60cm) composed of 20 sites. The experiment results illustrate that the electron temperature ranges from 3.71eV to 3.96eV, with the mean value of 3.82eV and the standard deviation of 0.064eV. The electron density ranges from 8.30×1012/m3 to 1.66×1013/m3, with the mean value of 1.30×1013/m3 and the standard deviation of 2.15×1012/m3. All data is analyzed according to the “ideal" plasma conditions of Maxwellian distributions.
Abstract: Smoothing or filtering of data is first preprocessing step
for noise suppression in many applications involving data analysis.
Moving average is the most popular method of smoothing the data,
generalization of this led to the development of Savitzky-Golay filter.
Many window smoothing methods were developed by convolving
the data with different window functions for different applications;
most widely used window functions are Gaussian or Kaiser. Function
approximation of the data by polynomial regression or Fourier
expansion or wavelet expansion also gives a smoothed data. Wavelets
also smooth the data to great extent by thresholding the wavelet
coefficients. Almost all smoothing methods destroys the peaks and
flatten them when the support of the window is increased. In certain
applications it is desirable to retain peaks while smoothing the data
as much as possible. In this paper we present a methodology called
as peak-wise smoothing that will smooth the data to any desired level
without losing the major peak features.
Abstract: This paper features the mathematical modeling of a single input single output based Timoshenko smart beam. Further, this mathematical model is used to design a multirate output feedback based discrete sliding mode controller using Bartoszewicz law to suppress the flexural vibrations. The first 2 dominant vibratory modes is retained. Here, an application of the discrete sliding mode control in smart systems is presented. The algorithm uses a fast output sampling based sliding mode control strategy that would avoid the use of switching in the control input and hence avoids chattering. This method does not need the measurement of the system states for feedback as it makes use of only the output samples for designing the controller. Thus, this methodology is more practical and easy to implement.
Abstract: The lifelong learning is a crucial element in the
modernization of European education and training systems. The most
important actors in the development process of the lifelong learning
are the trainers, whose professional characteristics need new
competences and skills in the current labour market. The main
objective of this paper is to establish an importance ranking of the
new competences, capabilities and skills that the lifelong learning
Spanish trainers must possess nowadays. A wide study of secondary
sources has allowed the design of a questionnaire that organizes the
trainer-s skills and competences. The e-Delphi method is used for
realizing a creative, individual and anonymous evaluation by experts
on the importance ranking that presents the criteria, sub-criteria and
indicators of the e-Delphi questionnaire. Twenty Spanish experts in
the lifelong learning have participated in two rounds of the e-
DELPHI method. In the first round, the analysis of the experts-
evaluation has allowed to establish the ranking of the most
importance criteria, sub-criteria and indicators and to eliminate the
least valued. The minimum level necessary to reach the consensus
among experts has been achieved in the second round.
Abstract: A simple and dexterous in situ method was introduced to load CdS nanocrystals into organofunctionalized mesoporous, which used an ion-exchange method. The products were extensively characterized by combined spectroscopic methods. X- ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) demonstrated both the maintenance of pore symmetry (space group p6mm) of SBA-15 and the presence of CdS nanocrystals with uniform sizes of about 6 - 8 nm inside the functionalized SBA-15 channels. These mesoporous silica-supported CdS composites showed room temperature photoluminescence properties with a blue shift, indicating the quantum size effect of nanocrystalline CdS.
Abstract: How to coordinate the behaviors of the agents through
learning is a challenging problem within multi-agent domains.
Because of its complexity, recent work has focused on how
coordinated strategies can be learned. Here we are interested in using
reinforcement learning techniques to learn the coordinated actions of a
group of agents, without requiring explicit communication among
them. However, traditional reinforcement learning methods are based
on the assumption that the environment can be modeled as Markov
Decision Process, which usually cannot be satisfied when multiple
agents coexist in the same environment. Moreover, to effectively
coordinate each agent-s behavior so as to achieve the goal, it-s
necessary to augment the state of each agent with the information
about other existing agents. Whereas, as the number of agents in a
multiagent environment increases, the state space of each agent grows
exponentially, which will cause the combinational explosion problem.
Profit sharing is one of the reinforcement learning methods that allow
agents to learn effective behaviors from their experiences even within
non-Markovian environments. In this paper, to remedy the drawback
of the original profit sharing approach that needs much memory to
store each state-action pair during the learning process, we firstly
address a kind of on-line rational profit sharing algorithm. Then, we
integrate the advantages of modular learning architecture with on-line
rational profit sharing algorithm, and propose a new modular
reinforcement learning model. The effectiveness of the technique is
demonstrated using the pursuit problem.
Abstract: In this paper we considered the Neumann problem for
the fourth order differential equation. First we define the weighted Sobolev space
2 Wα and generalized solution for this equation. Then we consider the existence and uniqueness of the generalized solution,
as well as give the description of the spectrum and of the domain of definition of the corresponding operator.
Abstract: Higher-order Statistics (HOS), also known as
cumulants, cross moments and their frequency domain counterparts,
known as poly spectra have emerged as a powerful signal processing
tool for the synthesis and analysis of signals and systems. Algorithms
used for the computation of cross moments are computationally
intensive and require high computational speed for real-time
applications. For efficiency and high speed, it is often advantageous
to realize computation intensive algorithms in hardware. A promising
solution that combines high flexibility together with the speed of a
traditional hardware is Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). In
this paper, we present FPGA-based parallel architecture for the
computation of third-order cross moments. The proposed design is
coded in Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) Hardware
Description Language (VHDL) and functionally verified by
implementing it on Xilinx Spartan-3 XC3S2000FG900-4 FPGA.
Implementation results are presented and it shows that the proposed
design can operate at a maximum frequency of 86.618 MHz.
Abstract: With the development of virtual communities, there is
an increase in the number of members in Virtual Communities (VCs).
Many join VCs with the objective of sharing their knowledge and
seeking knowledge from others. Despite the eagerness of sharing
knowledge and receiving knowledge through VCs, there is no
standard of assessing ones knowledge sharing capabilities and
prospects of knowledge sharing. This paper developed a vector space
model to assess the knowledge sharing prospect of VC users.
Abstract: It is well known that a linear dynamic system including
a delay will exhibit limit cycle oscillations when a bang-bang sensor
is used in the feedback loop of a PID controller. A similar behaviour
occurs when a delayed feedback signal is used to train a neural
network. This paper develops a method of predicting this behaviour
by linearizing the system, which can be shown to behave in a manner
similar to an integral controller. Using this procedure, it is possible
to predict the characteristics of the neural network driven limit cycle
to varying degrees of accuracy, depending on the information known
about the system. An application is also presented: the intelligent
control of a spark ignition engine.
Abstract: This paper deals with the modeling and the evaluation of a multiplicative phase noise influence on the bit error ratio in a general space communication system. Our research is focused on systems with multi-state phase shift keying modulation techniques and it turns out, that the phase noise significantly affects the bit error rate, especially for higher signal to noise ratios. These results come from a system model created in Matlab environment and are shown in a form of constellation diagrams and bit error rate dependencies. The change of a user data bit rate is also considered and included into simulation results. Obtained outcomes confirm theoretical presumptions.
Abstract: Light is one of the most important qualitative and
symbolic factors and has a special position in architecture and urban
development in regard to practical function. The main function of
light, either natural or artificial, is lighting up the environment and
the constructional forms which is called lighting. However, light is
used to redefine the urban spaces by architectural genius with regard
to three aesthetic, conceptual and symbolic factors. In architecture
and urban development, light has a function beyond lighting up the
environment, and the designers consider it as one of the basic
components. The present research aims at studying the function of
light and color in architectural view and their effects in buildings.
Abstract: In 2002 an amendment to SOLAS opened for
lightweight material constructions in vessels if the same fire safety as
in steel constructions could be obtained. FISPAT (FIreSPread
Analysis Tool) is a computer application that simulates fire spread
and fault injection in cruise vessels and identifies fire sensitive areas.
It was developed to analyze cruise vessel designs and provides a
method to evaluate network layout and safety of cruise vessels. It
allows fast, reliable and deterministic exhaustive simulations and
presents the result in a graphical vessel model. By performing the
analysis iteratively while altering the cruise vessel design it can be
used along with fire chamber experiments to show that the
lightweight design can be as safe as a steel construction and that
SOLAS regulations are fulfilled.
Abstract: The influence of full-fat soy flour (FFSF) and
extrusion conditions on the mechanical characteristics of dry
spaghetti were evaluated. Process was performed with screw speed of
10-40rpm and water circulating temperature of 35-70°C. Data
analysis using mixture design showed that this enrichment resulted in
significant differences in mechanical strength.
