Abstract: In this article, the collection and analysis of drawings are implemented and discussed as a methodological approach to reconstruct children's perspective on horse-assisted interventions. For this purpose, drawings of three children (8-10 years old) were included in the research process in order to clarify the question of what insights can be derived from the drawings about the child's perspective on the intervention. The children were asked to draw a picture of themselves at the horse stable. Practical implementation considerations are disclosed. The developed analysis steps consider the work of two art historians (Erwin Panofsky and Max Imdahl) to capture the visual sense and to interpret the children's drawings. Relevant topics about the children's perspective can be inferred from the drawings. In the drawings, the following topics are important for the children: Overcoming challenges and fears in handling the horse, support from an adult in handling the horse and feeling self-confident and competent to act after completing tasks with the horse. The drawings show the main topics which are relevant for the children and can be used as a basis for conversation. All in all, the child's drawing offers a useful addition to other survey methods in order to gain further insights into the experiences of children in a horse-assisted setting.
Abstract: Multimodal image registration is a profoundly complex
task which is why deep learning has been used widely to address it in
recent years. However, two main challenges remain: Firstly, the lack
of ground truth data calls for an unsupervised learning approach,
which leads to the second challenge of defining a feasible loss
function that can compare two images of different modalities to judge
their level of alignment. To avoid this issue altogether we implement a
generative adversarial network consisting of two registration networks
GAB, GBA and two discrimination networks DA, DB connected by
spatial transformation layers. GAB learns to generate a deformation
field which registers an image of the modality B to an image of the
modality A. To do that, it uses the feedback of the discriminator DB
which is learning to judge the quality of alignment of the registered
image B. GBA and DA learn a mapping from modality A to modality
B. Additionally, a cycle-consistency loss is implemented. For this,
both registration networks are employed twice, therefore resulting in
images ˆA, ˆB which were registered to ˜B, ˜A which were registered
to the initial image pair A, B. Thus the resulting and initial images
of the same modality can be easily compared. A dataset of liver
CT and MRI was used to evaluate the quality of our approach and
to compare it against learning and non-learning based registration
algorithms. Our approach leads to dice scores of up to 0.80 ± 0.01
and is therefore comparable to and slightly more successful than
algorithms like SimpleElastix and VoxelMorph.
Abstract: The network connectivity of medical devices is increasing at a rapid rate. Many medical devices, such as vital sign monitors, share information via wireless or wired connections. However, these connectivity options suffer from a variety of well-known limitations. Wireless connectivity, especially in the unlicensed radio frequency bands, can be disrupted. Such disruption could be due to benign reasons, such as a crowded spectrum, or to malicious intent. While wired connections are less susceptible to interference, they inhibit the mobility of the medical devices, which could be critical in a variety of scenarios. This work explores the application of Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) communication to enhance the security, performance, and mobility of medical devices in connected healthcare scenarios. A simple bridge for connected devices serves as an avenue to connect traditional medical devices to the Li-Fi network. This bridge was utilized to conduct bandwidth tests on a small Li-Fi network installed into a Mock-ICU setting with a backend enterprise network similar to that of a hospital. Mobile and stationary tests were conducted to replicate various different situations that might occur within a hospital setting. Results show that in room Li-Fi connectivity provides reasonable bandwidth and latency within a hospital like setting.
Abstract: This paper discusses the idea of capturing an expert’s knowledge in the form of human understandable rules and then inserting these rules into a dynamic cell structure (DCS) neural network. The DCS is a form of self-organizing map that can be used for many purposes, including classification and prediction. This particular neural network is considered to be a topology preserving network that starts with no pre-structure, but assumes a structure once trained. The DCS has been used in mission and safety-critical applications, including adaptive flight control and health-monitoring in aerial vehicles. The approach is to insert expert knowledge into the DCS before training. Rules are translated into a pre-structure and then training data are presented. This idea has been demonstrated using the well-known Iris data set and it has been shown that inserting the pre-structure results in better accuracy with the same training.
Abstract: Traffic congestion is the most critical issue faced by those in the transportation profession today. Over the past few years, roundabouts have been recognized as a measure to promote efficiency at intersections globally. In developing countries like India, this type of intersection still faces a lot of issues, such as bottleneck situations, long queues and increased waiting times, due to increasing traffic which in turn affect the performance of the entire urban network. This research is a case study of a non-conventional roundabout, in terms of geometric design, in a small town in India. These types of roundabouts should be analyzed for their functionality in mixed traffic conditions, prevalent in many developing countries. Microscopic traffic simulation is an effective tool to analyze traffic conditions and estimate various measures of operational performance of intersections such as capacity, vehicle delay, queue length and Level of Service (LOS) of urban roadway network. This study involves analyzation of an unsymmetrical non-circular 6-legged roundabout known as “Kala Aam Chauraha” in a small town Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, India using VISSIM simulation package which is the most widely used software for microscopic traffic simulation. For coding in VISSIM, data are collected from the site during morning and evening peak hours of a weekday and then analyzed for base model building. The model is calibrated on driving behavior and vehicle parameters and an optimal set of calibrated parameters is obtained followed by validation of the model to obtain the base model which can replicate the real field conditions. This calibrated and validated model is then used to analyze the prevailing operational traffic performance of the roundabout which is then compared with a proposed alternative to improve efficiency of roundabout network and to accommodate pedestrians in the geometry. The study results show that the alternative proposed is an advantage over the present roundabout as it considerably reduces congestion, vehicle delay and queue length and hence, successfully improves roundabout performance without compromising on pedestrian safety. The study proposes similar designs for modification of existing non-conventional roundabouts experiencing excessive delays and queues in order to improve their efficiency especially in the case of developing countries. From this study, it can be concluded that there is a need to improve the current geometry of such roundabouts to ensure better traffic performance and safety of drivers and pedestrians negotiating the intersection and hence this proposal may be considered as a best fit.
Abstract: Cluster Redevelopment is a new concept in the city of Mumbai. Its regulations were laid down by the government in 2009. The concept of cluster redevelopment encompasses a group of buildings defined by a boundary as specified by the municipal authority (in this case, Mumbai), which may be dilapidated or approved for redevelopment. The study analyses the effect of cluster redevelopment in the form of renewal of old group of buildings as compared to refurbishment or restoration - on energy consumption. The methodology includes methods of assessment to determine increase or decrease in energy consumption in cluster redevelopment based on different criteria such as carpet area of the units, building envelope and its architectural elements. Results show that as the area and number of units increase the Energy consumption increases and the EPI (energy performance index) decreases as compared to the base case. The energy consumption per unit area declines by 29% in the proposed cluster redevelopment as compared to the original settlement. It is recommended that although the development is spacious and provides more light and ventilation, aspects such as glass type, traditional architectural features and consumer behavior are critical in the reduction of energy consumption.
Abstract: Wireless communication technology is rapidly changing with recent developments in portable devices and communication protocols. This has generated demand for more advanced and compact antenna structures and therefore, proposed work focuses on Meander Line Antenna (MLA) design. Here, Pentaband MLA is designed on a FR4 substrate (85 mm x 40 mm) with dielectric constant (ϵr) 4.4, loss tangent (tan ) 0.018 and height 1.6 mm with coplanar feed and open stub structure. It can be operated in LTE (0.670 GHz-0.696 GHz) GPS (1.564 GHz-1.579 GHz), WCDMA (1.920 GHz-2.135 GHz), LTE UL frequency band 23 (2-2.020 GHz) and 5G (3.10 GHz-3.550 GHz) application bands. Also, it gives good performance in terms of Return Loss (RL) which is < -10 dB, impedance bandwidth with maximum Bandwidth (BW) up to 0.21 GHz and realized gains with maximum gain up to 3.28 dBi. Antenna is simulated with open stub and without open stub structures to see the effect on impedance BW coverage. In addition to this, it is checked with human hand and head phantoms to assure that it falls within specified Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits.
Abstract: In recent years, the number of document data has been
increasing since the spread of the Internet. Many methods have been
studied for extracting topics from large document data. We proposed
Independent Topic Analysis (ITA) to extract topics independent of
each other from large document data such as newspaper data. ITA is a
method for extracting the independent topics from the document data
by using the Independent Component Analysis. The topic represented
by ITA is represented by a set of words. However, the set of words
is quite different from the topics the user imagines. For example,
the top five words with high independence of a topic are as follows.
Topic1 = {"scor", "game", "lead", "quarter", "rebound"}. This Topic
1 is considered to represent the topic of "SPORTS". This topic name
"SPORTS" has to be attached by the user. ITA cannot name topics.
Therefore, in this research, we propose a method to obtain topics easy
for people to understand by using the web search engine, topics given
by the set of words given by independent topic analysis. In particular,
we search a set of topical words, and the title of the homepage of
the search result is taken as the topic name. And we also use the
proposed method for some data and verify its effectiveness.
Abstract: To claim the ownership for an executable program is a non-trivial task. An emerging direction is to add a watermark to the program such that the watermarked program preserves the original program’s functionality and removing the watermark would heavily destroy the functionality of the watermarked program. In this paper, the first watermarking signature scheme with the watermark and the constraint function hidden in the symmetric key setting is constructed. The scheme uses well-known techniques of lattice trapdoors and a lattice evaluation. The watermarking signature scheme is unforgeable under the Short Integer Solution (SIS) assumption and satisfies other security requirements such as the unremovability security property.
Abstract: This paper compares the multipath mitigation
performance of code correlation reference waveform receivers
with variable and fixed window width, for binary offset carrier
and multiplexed binary offset carrier signals typically used in
global navigation satellite systems. In the variable window width
method, such width is iteratively reduced until the distortion on
the discriminator with multipath is eliminated. This distortion is
measured as the Euclidean distance between the actual discriminator
(obtained with the incoming signal), and the local discriminator
(generated with a local copy of the signal). The variable window
width have shown better performance compared to the fixed window
width. In particular, the former yields zero error for all delays for
the BOC and MBOC signals considered, while the latter gives
rather large nonzero errors for small delays in all cases. Due to
its computational simplicity, the variable window width method is
perfectly suitable for implementation in low-cost receivers.
Abstract: Automated vehicles (AVs) have the potential to enhance road capacity, improving road safety and traffic efficiency. Research and development on AVs have been going on for many years. However, when the complicated traffic rules and real situations interacted, AVs fail to make decisions on contradicting situations, and are not able to have control in all conditions due to highly dynamic driving scenarios. This limits AVs’ usage and restricts the full potential benefits that they can bring. Furthermore, regulations, infrastructure development, and public acceptance cannot keep up at the same pace as technology breakthroughs. Facing these challenges, this paper proposes automated vehicle traffic control tower (AVTCT) acting as a safe, efficient and integrated solution for AV control. It introduces a concept of AVTCT for control, management, decision-making, communication and interaction with various aspects in transportation. With the prototype demonstrations and simulations, AVTCT has the potential to overcome the control challenges with AVs and can facilitate AV reaching their full potential. Possible functionalities, benefits as well as challenges of AVTCT are discussed, which set the foundation for the conceptual model, simulation and real application of AVTCT.
Abstract: People with speech disorders may rely on augmentative
and alternative communication (AAC) technologies to help them
communicate. However, the limitations of the current AAC
technologies act as barriers to the optimal use of these technologies in
daily communication settings. The ability to communicate effectively
relies on a number of factors that are not limited to the intelligibility
of the spoken words. In fact, non-verbal cues play a critical role in
the correct comprehension of messages and having to rely on verbal
communication only, as is the case with current AAC technology,
may contribute to problems in communication. This is especially true
for people’s ability to express their feelings and emotions, which are
communicated to a large part through non-verbal cues. This paper
focuses on understanding more about the non-verbal communication
ability of people with dysarthria, with the overarching aim of this
research being to improve AAC technology by allowing people
with dysarthria to better communicate emotions. Preliminary survey
results are presented that gives an understanding of how people with
dysarthria convey emotions, what emotions that are important for
them to get across, what emotions that are difficult for them to convey,
and whether there is a difference in communicating emotions when
speaking to familiar versus unfamiliar people.
Abstract: Modeling dam-break flows over non-flat beds requires
an accurate representation of the topography which is the main
source of uncertainty in the model. Therefore, developing robust
and accurate techniques for reconstructing topography in this class
of problems would reduce the uncertainty in the flow system. In
many hydraulic applications, experimental techniques have been
widely used to measure the bed topography. In practice, experimental
work in hydraulics may be very demanding in both time and cost.
Meanwhile, computational hydraulics have served as an alternative
for laboratory and field experiments. Unlike the forward problem,
the inverse problem is used to identify the bed parameters from the
given experimental data. In this case, the shallow water equations
used for modeling the hydraulics need to be rearranged in a way
that the model parameters can be evaluated from measured data.
However, this approach is not always possible and it suffers from
stability restrictions. In the present work, we propose an adaptive
optimal control technique to numerically identify the underlying bed
topography from a given set of free-surface observation data. In this
approach, a minimization function is defined to iteratively determine
the model parameters. The proposed technique can be interpreted
as a fractional-stage scheme. In the first stage, the forward problem
is solved to determine the measurable parameters from known data.
In the second stage, the adaptive control Ensemble Kalman Filter is
implemented to combine the optimality of observation data in order to
obtain the accurate estimation of the topography. The main features
of this method are on one hand, the ability to solve for different
complex geometries with no need for any rearrangements in the
original model to rewrite it in an explicit form. On the other hand, its
achievement of strong stability for simulations of flows in different
regimes containing shocks or discontinuities over any geometry.
Numerical results are presented for a dam-break flow problem over
non-flat bed using different solvers for the shallow water equations.
The robustness of the proposed method is investigated using different
numbers of loops, sensitivity parameters, initial samples and location
of observations. The obtained results demonstrate high reliability and
accuracy of the proposed techniques.
Abstract: Infrastructure maintenance is a great challenge facing sustainable development of infrastructure assets due to the high cost of passive implementation of a sustainable maintenance plan. An assessment model of sustainable maintenance for highway infrastructure projects in Egypt is developed in this paper. It helps in improving the implementation of sustainable maintenance criteria. Thus, this paper has applied the analytical hierarchy processes (AHP) to rank and explore the weight of 26 assessment indicators using three hierarchy levels containing the main sustainable categories and subcategories with related indicators. Overall combined weight of each indicator for sustainable maintenance evaluation has been calculated to sum up to a sustainable maintenance performance index (SMI). The results show that the factor "Preventive maintenance cost" has the highest relative contribution factor among others (13.5%), while two factors of environmental performance have the least weights (0.7%). The developed model aims to provide decision makers with information about current maintenance performance and support them in the decision-making process regarding future directions of maintenance activities. It can be used as an assessment performance tool during the operation and maintenance stage. The developed indicators can be considered during designing the maintenance plan. Practices for successful implementation of the model are also presented.
Abstract: We propose to record Activities of Daily Living
(ADLs) of elderly people using a vision-based system so as to provide
better assistive and personalization technologies. Current ADL-related
research is based on data collected with help from non-elderly subjects
in laboratory environments and the activities performed are predetermined
for the sole purpose of data collection. To obtain more
realistic datasets for the application, we recorded ADLs for the elderly
with data collected from real-world environment involving real elderly
subjects. Motivated by the need to collect data for more effective
research related to elderly care, we chose to collect data in the room of
an elderly person. Specifically, we installed Kinect, a vision-based
sensor on the ceiling, to capture the activities that the elderly subject
performs in the morning every day. Based on the data, we identified
12 morning activities that the elderly person performs daily. To
recognize these activities, we created a HARELCARE framework to
investigate into the effectiveness of existing Human Activity
Recognition (HAR) algorithms and propose the use of a transfer
learning algorithm for HAR. We compared the performance, in terms
of accuracy, and training progress. Although the collected dataset is
relatively small, the proposed algorithm has a good potential to be
applied to all daily routine activities for healthcare purposes such as
evidence-based diagnosis and treatment.
Abstract: In sports, individuals and teams are typically interested
in final rankings. Final results, such as times or distances, dictate
these rankings, also known as places. Places can be further associated
with ordered random variables, commonly referred to as order
statistics. In this work, we introduce a simple, yet accurate order
statistical ordinal regression function that predicts relay race places
with changeover-times. We call this function the Fenton-Wilkinson
Order Statistics model. This model is built on the following educated
assumption: individual leg-times follow log-normal distributions.
Moreover, our key idea is to utilize Fenton-Wilkinson approximations
of changeover-times alongside an estimator for the total number
of teams as in the notorious German tank problem. This original
place regression function is sigmoidal and thus correctly predicts
the existence of a small number of elite teams that significantly
outperform the rest of the teams. Our model also describes how place
increases linearly with changeover-time at the inflection point of the
log-normal distribution function. With real-world data from Jukola
2019, a massive orienteering relay race, the model is shown to be
highly accurate even when the size of the training set is only 5%
of the whole data set. Numerical results also show that our model
exhibits smaller place prediction root-mean-square-errors than linear
regression, mord regression and Gaussian process regression.
Abstract: This study aims to investigate the amount of energy (economic wave energy potential) that can be obtained from the existing wave energy converters in the high wave energy potential region of the Black Sea in terms of wave energy potential and their performance at different depths in the region. The data needed for this purpose were obtained using the calibrated nested layered SWAN wave modeling program version 41.01AB, which was forced with Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) winds from 1979 to 2009. The wave dataset at a time interval of 2 hours was accumulated for a sub-grid domain for around Karaburun beach in Arnavutkoy, a district of Istanbul city. The annual sea state characteristic matrices for the five different depths along with a vertical line to the coastline were calculated for 31 years. According to the power matrices of different wave energy converter systems and characteristic matrices for each possible installation depth, the probability distribution tables of the specified mean wave period or wave energy period and significant wave height were calculated. Then, by using the relationship between these distribution tables, according to the present wave climate, the energy that the wave energy converter systems at each depth can produce was determined. Thus, the economically feasible potential of the relevant coastal zone was revealed, and the effect of different depths on energy converter systems is presented. The Oceantic at 50, 75 and 100 m depths and Oyster at 5 and 25 m depths presents the best performance. In the 31-year long period 1998 the most and 1989 is the least dynamic year.
Abstract: Cotton, as a strategic crop, plays an important role in providing human food and clothing need, because of its oil, protein, and fiber. Iran has been one of the largest cotton producers in the world in the past, but unfortunately, for economic reasons, its production is reduced now. One of the ways to reduce the cost of cotton production is to expand the mechanization of cotton harvesting. Iranian farmers do not accept the function of cotton harvesters. One reason for this lack of acceptance of cotton harvesting machines is the number of field losses on these machines. So, the majority of cotton fields are harvested by hand. Although the correct setting of the harvesting machine is very important in the cotton losses, the morphological properties of the cotton plant also affect the performance of cotton harvesters. In this study, the effect of some cotton morphological properties such as the height of the cotton plant, number, and length of sympodial and monopodial branches, boll dimensions, boll weight, number of carpels and bracts angle were evaluated on the performance of cotton picker. In this research, the efficiency of John Deere 9920 spindle Cotton picker is investigated on five different Iranian cotton cultivars. The results indicate that there was a significant difference between the five cultivars in terms of machine harvest efficiency. Golestan cultivar showed the best cotton harvester performance with an average of 87.6% of total harvestable seed cotton and Khorshid cultivar had the least cotton harvester performance. The principal component analysis showed that, at 50.76% probability, the cotton picker efficiency is affected by the bracts angle positively and by boll dimensions, the number of carpels and the height of cotton plants negatively. The seed cotton remains (in the plant and on the ground) after harvester in PCA scatter plot were in the same zone with boll dimensions and several carpels.

The Bracken basic concept scale was used to evaluate subjects’ language skills, cognitive development, and school readiness. The study found that our systemic interventions of Project MIND significantly improved the mathematical and cognitive abilities in children with autism. The results of this study may lead to a major change in effective and adequate health care services for children with ASD and their families. All statistical analyses were performed with the IBM SPSS Statistics Version 25 for Windows. The significant level was set at 0.05 P-value.
Abstract: State Estimator became an intrinsic part of Energy Management Systems (EMS). The SCADA measurements received from the field are processed by the State Estimator in order to accurately determine the actual operating state of the power systems and provide that information to other real-time network applications. All EMS vendors offer a State Estimator functionality in their baseline products. However, setting up and ensuring that State Estimator consistently produces a reliable solution often consumes a substantial engineering effort. This paper provides generic recommendations and describes a simple practical approach to efficient tuning of State Estimator, based on the working experience with major EMS software platforms and consulting projects in many electrical utilities of the USA.
