Abstract: An active slat is developed to increase the lift and delay
the separation for a DU96-W180 airfoil. The active slat is a fixed slat
that can be closed, fully opened or intermittently opened by a rotating
vane depending on the need. Experimental results show that the active
slat has reduced the mean pressure and increased the mean velocity
on the suction side of the airfoil for all positive angles of attack,
indicating an increase of lift. The experimental data and numerical
simulations also show that the direction of actuator vane rotation can
influence the mixing of the flow streams on the suction side and
hence influence the aerodynamic performance.
Abstract: Characterization of the engineering behavior of
unsaturated soil is dependent on the soil-water characteristic curve
(SWCC), a graphical representation of the relationship between water
content or degree of saturation and soil suction. A reasonable
description of the SWCC is thus important for the accurate prediction
of unsaturated soil parameters. The measurement procedures for
determining the SWCC, however, are difficult, expensive, and timeconsuming.
During the past few decades, researchers have laid a
major focus on developing empirical equations for predicting the
SWCC, with a large number of empirical models suggested. One of
the most crucial questions is how precisely existing equations can
represent the SWCC. As different models have different ranges of
capability, it is essential to evaluate the precision of the SWCC
models used for each particular soil type for better SWCC estimation.
It is expected that better estimation of SWCC would be achieved via
a thorough statistical analysis of its distribution within a particular
soil class. With this in view, a statistical analysis was conducted in
order to evaluate the reliability of the SWCC prediction models
against laboratory measurement. Optimization techniques were used
to obtain the best-fit of the model parameters in four forms of SWCC
equation, using laboratory data for relatively coarse-textured (i.e.,
sandy) soil. The four most prominent SWCCs were evaluated and
computed for each sample. The result shows that the Brooks and
Corey model is the most consistent in describing the SWCC for sand
soil type. The Brooks and Corey model prediction also exhibit
compatibility with samples ranging from low to high soil water
content in which subjected to the samples that evaluated in this study.
Abstract: A theoretical study has been presented to describe the boundary layer flow and heat transfer on an exponentially shrinking sheet with a variable wall temperature and suction, in the presence of magnetic field. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into ordinary differential equations by similarity transformation, which are then solved numerically using the shooting method. Results for the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, velocity profiles as well as temperature profiles are presented through graphs and tables for several sets of values of the parameters. The effects of the governing parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined.
Abstract: Effect of blockage ratio on heat transfer from non-circular tube is studied experimentally. For doing this experiment a suction type low speed wind tunnel with test section dimension of 14×14×40 and velocity in rage of 7-20 m/s was designed. The blockage ratios varied between 1.5 to 7 and Reynolds number based on equivalent diameter varies in range of 7.5×103 to 17.5×103. The results show that by increasing blockage ratio from 1.5 to 7, drag coefficient of the cam shaped tube decreased about 55 percent. By increasing Reynolds number, Nusselt number of the cam shaped tube increases about 40 to 48 percent in all ranges of blockage ratios.
Abstract: The design of an optimised horizontal axis 5-meter-long wind turbine rotor blade in according with IEC 61400-2 standard is a research and development project in order to fulfil the requirements of high efficiency of torque from wind production and to optimise the structural components to the lightest and strongest way possible. For this purpose, a research study is presented here by focusing on the structural characteristics of a composite wind turbine blade via finite element modelling and analysis tools. In this work, first, the required data regarding the general geometrical parts are gathered. Then, the airfoil geometries are created at various sections along the span of the blade by using CATIA software to obtain the two surfaces, namely; the suction and the pressure side of the blade in which there is a hat shaped fibre reinforced plastic spar beam, so-called chassis starting at 0.5m from the root of the blade and extends up to 4 m and filled with a foam core. The root part connecting the blade to the main rotor differential metallic hub having twelve hollow threaded studs is then modelled. The materials are assigned as two different types of glass fabrics, polymeric foam core material and the steel-balsa wood combination for the root connection parts. The glass fabrics are applied using hand wet lay-up lamination with epoxy resin as METYX L600E10C-0, is the unidirectional continuous fibres and METYX XL800E10F having a tri-axial architecture with fibres in the 0,+45,-45 degree orientations in a ratio of 2:1:1. Divinycell H45 is used as the polymeric foam. The finite element modelling of the blade is performed via MSC PATRAN software with various meshes created on each structural part considering shell type for all surface geometries, and lumped mass were added to simulate extra adhesive locations. For the static analysis, the boundary conditions are assigned as fixed at the root through aforementioned bolts, where for dynamic analysis both fixed-free and free-free boundary conditions are made. By also taking the mesh independency into account, MSC NASTRAN is used as a solver for both analyses. The static analysis aims the tip deflection of the blade under its own weight and the dynamic analysis comprises normal mode dynamic analysis performed in order to obtain the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes focusing the first five in and out-of-plane bending and the torsional modes of the blade. The analyses results of this study are then used as a benchmark prior to modal testing, where the experiments over the produced wind turbine rotor blade has approved the analytical calculations.
Abstract: In this paper, we have investigated the free convection MHD flow due to heat and mass transfer through porous medium bounded by an infinite vertical non-conducting porous plate with time dependent suction under the influence of uniform transverse magnetic field of strength H0. When Temperature (T) and Concentration (C) at the plate is oscillatory with time about a constant non-zero mean. The velocity distribution, the temperature distribution, co-efficient of skin friction and role of heat transfer is investigated. Here the partial differential equations are involved. Exact solution is not possible so approximate solution is obtained and various graphs are plotted.
Abstract: The present analysis considers the steady stagnation point flow and heat transfer towards a permeable shrinking sheet in an upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) electrically conducting fluid, with a constant magnetic field applied in the transverse direction to flow and a local heat generation within the boundary layer, with a heat generation rate proportional to (T-T)p Using a similarity transformation, the governing system of partial differential equations is first transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, which is then solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical results are obtained for the flow and thermal fields for various values of the stretching/shrinking parameter λ, the magnetic parameter M, the elastic parameter K, the Prandtl number Pr, the suction parameter s, the heat generation parameter Q, and the exponent p. The results indicate the existence of dual solutions for the shrinking sheet up to a critical value λc whose value depends on the value of M, K, and s. In the presence of internal heat absorption (Q
Abstract: In this paper, the steady laminar three-dimensional boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a copper (Cu)-water nanofluid in the vicinity of a permeable shrinking flat surface in an otherwise quiescent fluid is studied. The nanofluid mathematical model in which the effect of the nanoparticle volume fraction is taken into account is considered. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation which is then solved numerically using the function bvp4c from Matlab. Dual solutions (upper and lower branch solutions) are found for the similarity boundary layer equations for a certain range of the suction parameter. A stability analysis has been performed to show which branch solutions are stable and physically realizable. The numerical results for the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are obtained, presented and discussed in detail for a range of various governing parameters.

The governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations, which are then solved numerically using MATLAB routine boundary value problem solver bvp4c. Numerical results show that dual solutions are possible for a certain range of the suction parameter. A stability analysis is performed to determine which solution is linearly stable and physically realizable.
Abstract: This analysis is performed to study the momentum, heat and mass transfer characteristics of MHD mixed convective flow past inclined porous plate in porous medium, including the effect of fluid suction. The fluid is assumed to be steady, incompressible and dense. Similarity solution is used to transform the problem under consideration into coupled nonlinear boundary layer equations which are then solved numerically by using the Runge-Kutta sixth-order integration scheme together with Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique. Numerical results for the various types of parameters entering into the problem for velocity, temperature and concentration distributions are presented graphically and analyzed thereafter. Moreover, expressions for the skin-friction, heat transfer co-efficient and mass transfer co-efficient are discussed with graphs against streamwise distance for various governing parameters.
Abstract: Since fuel must be injected with appropriate pressure and time for accurate performance of diesel engines, then proper function of engine is influenced by accurate function of injector pump. At first total pump was designed by SolidWorks 2012 software. Then the total relationship of rotor, roller, internal cam ring, pole shoe and plunger in injector pump in MF285 tractor and their performance was shown. During suction state rollers connect with dents in internal cam ring and in pressure course pole shoes have drawer move in rotor and perform tappet action between rollers and plungers. The maximum stress was obtained by using analysis of finite element method. The maximum stress in contact surface of roller and internal cam ring and on roller surface. The maximum amount of this stress is 288.12 MPa. According to conducted analyses, the minimum value for safety factor is related to roller surface and it equals to 2.0477.
Abstract: The present study is carried out to investigate the magneto-viscous effects on incompressible ferrofluid flow over a porous rotating disc with suction or injection on the surface of the disc subjected to a magnetic field. The flow under consideration is axi-symmetric steady ferrofluid flow of electrically non-conducting fluid. Karman’s transformation is used to convert the governing boundary layer equations involved in the problem to a system of non linear coupled differential equations. The solution of this system is obtained by using power series approximation. The flow characteristics i.e. radial, tangential, axial velocities and boundary layer displacement thickness are calculated for various values of MFD (magnetic field dependent) viscosity and for different values of suction injection parameter. Besides this, skin friction coefficients are also calculated on the surface of the disk. The results thus obtained are presented numerically and graphically in the paper.
Abstract: An unsteady mixed free convection MHD flow of elastic-viscous incompressible fluid past an infinite vertical porous flat plate is investigated when the presence of heat Source/sink, temperature and concentration are assumed to be oscillating with time and hall effect. The governing equations are solved by complex variable technique. The expressions for the velocity field, temperature field and species concentration are demonstrated in graphs. The effects of the Prandtl number, the Grashof number, modified Grashof number, the Schimidt number, the Hall parameter, Elastic parameter & Magnetic parameter are discussed.
Abstract: The steady coupled dissipative layers, called
Marangoni mixed convection boundary layers, in the presence of a
magnetic field and solute concentration that are formed along the
surface of two immiscible fluids with uniform suction or injection
effects is examined. The similarity boundary layer equations are
solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta Fehlberg with shooting
technique. The Marangoni, buoyancy and external pressure gradient
effects that are generated in mixed convection boundary layer flow
are assessed. The velocity, temperature and concentration boundary
layers thickness decrease with the increase of the magnetic field
strength and the injection to suction. For buoyancy-opposed flow, the
Marangoni mixed convection parameter enhances the velocity
boundary layer but decreases the temperature and concentration
boundary layers. However, for the buoyancy-assisted flow, the
Marangoni mixed convection parameter decelerates the velocity but
increases the temperature and concentration boundary layers.
Abstract: Vortices can develop in intakes of turbojet and turbo
fan aero engines during high power operation in the vicinity of solid
surfaces. These vortices can cause catastrophic damage to the engine.
The factors determining the formation of the vortex include both
geometric dimensions as well as flow parameters. It was shown that
the threshold at which the vortex forms or disappears is also
dependent on the initial flow condition (i.e. whether a vortex forms
after stabilised non vortex flow or vice-versa). A computational fluid
dynamics study was conducted to determine the difference in
thresholds between the two conditions. This is the first reported
numerical investigation of the “memory effect". The numerical
results reproduce the phenomenon reported in previous experimental
studies and additional factors, which had not been previously studied,
were investigated. They are the rate at which ambient velocity
changes and the initial value of ambient velocity. The former was
found to cause a shift in the threshold but not the later. It was also
found that the varying condition thresholds are not symmetrical about
the neutral threshold. The vortex to no vortex threshold lie slightly
further away from the neutral threshold compared to the no vortex to
vortex threshold. The results suggests that experimental investigation
of vortex formation threshold performed either in vortex to no vortex
conditions, or vice versa, solely may introduce mis-predictions
greater than 10%.
Abstract: In this chapter, we have studied Variation of velocity in incompressible fluid over a moving surface. The boundary layer equations are on a fixed or continuously moving flat plate in the same or opposite direction to the free stream with suction and injection. The boundary layer equations are transferred from partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Numerical solutions are obtained by using Runge-Kutta and Shooting methods. We have found numerical solution to velocity and skin friction coefficient.
Abstract: In this study, an analysis has been performed for
conjugate heat and mass transfer of a steady laminar boundary-layer
mixed convection of magnetic hydrodynamic (MHD) flow with
radiation effect of second grade subject to suction past a stretching
sheet. Parameters E Nr, Gr, Gc, Ec and Sc represent the dominance of
the viscoelastic fluid heat and mass transfer effect which have
presented in governing equations, respectively. The similar
transformation and the finite-difference method have been used to
analyze the present problem. The conjugate heat and mass transfer
results show that the non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluid has a better heat
transfer effect than the Newtonian fluid. The free convection with a
larger r G or c G has a good heat transfer effect better than a smaller
r G or c G , and the radiative convection has a good heat transfer
effect better than non-radiative convection.
Abstract: Tip vortex cavitation is one of well known patterns of
cavitation phenomenon which occurs in axial pumps. This pattern of
cavitation occurs due to pressure difference between the pressure and
suction sides of blades of an axial pump. Since the pressure in the
pressure side of the blade is higher than the pressure in its suction
side, thus a very small portion of liquid flow flows back from
pressure side to the suction side. This fact is cause of tip vortex
cavitation and gap cavitation that may occur in axial pumps. In this
paper the results of our experimental investigation about movement
of tip vortex cavitation along blade edge due to reduction of pump
flow rate in an axial pump is reported. Results show that reduction of
pump flow rate in conjunction with increasing of outlet pressure
causes movement of tip vortex cavitation along blade edge towards
the blade tip. Results also show that by approaching tip vortex
cavitation to the blade tip, vortex tip pattern of cavitation replaces
with a cavitation phenomenon on the blade tip. Furthermore by
further reduction of pump flow rate and increasing of outlet pressure,
an unstable cavitation phenomenon occurs between each blade
leading edge and the next blade trailing edge.
Abstract: In this work, the results of mixing study by a jet mixer in a tank have been investigated in the laboratory scale. The tank dimensions are H/D=1 and the jet entrance have been considered in
the center of upper surface of tank. RNG-k-ε model is used as the
turbulent model for the prediction of the pattern of turbulent flow
inside the tank. For this purpose, a tank with volume of 110 liter is
simulated and it has been divided into 410,000 tetrahedral control
cells for performing the calculations. The grids at the vicinity of the
nozzle and suction pare are finer to get more accurate results. The
experimental results showed that in a vertical jet, the lowest mixing
time takes place at 35 degree. In addition, mixing time decreased by
increasing the Reynolds number. Furthermore, the CFD simulation
predicted the items as well a flow patterns precisely that validates the
experiments.
Abstract: The article deals with experimental and numerical
investigation of axi-symmetric subsonic air to air ejector with
diffuser adapted for boundary layer suction. The diffuser, which is
placed behind the mixing chamber of the ejector, has high divergence
angle and therefore low efficiency. To increase the efficiency, the
diffuser is equipped with slot enabling boundary layer suction. The
effect of boundary layer suction on flow in ejector, static pressure
distribution on the mixing chamber wall and characteristic were
measured and studied numerically. Both diffuser and ejector
efficiency were evaluated. The diffuser efficiency was increased,
however, the efficiency of ejector itself remained low.
