Abstract: Mardin is one of the unique cities in Turkey with its rich cultural and historical heritage. Mardin’s traditional dwellings have been affected both by natural data such as climate and topography and by cultural data like lifestyle and belief. However, in the new settlements, housing is formed with modern approaches and unsuitable forms clashing with Mardin’s culture and environment. While the city is expanding, traditional textures are ignored. Thus, traditional settlements are losing their identity and are vanishing because of the rapid change and transformation. The main aim of this paper is to determine the physical and social data needed to define the characteristic features of Mardin’s old and new settlements. In this context, based on social and cultural data, old and new settlement formations of Mardin have been investigated from various aspects. During this research, the following methods have been utilized: observations, interviews, public surveys, literature review, as well as site examination via maps, photographs and questionnaire methodology. In conclusion, this paper focuses on how changes in the physical forms of cities affect the typology and the identity of cities, as in the case of Mardin.
Abstract: ANDASA is a knowledge management platform for
the capitalization of knowledge and cultural assets for the artistic and
cultural sectors. It was built based on the priorities expressed by the
participating artists. Through mapping artistic activities and
specificities, it enables to highlight various aspects of the artistic
research and production. Such instrument will contribute to create
networks and partnerships, as it enables to evidentiate who does
what, in what field, using which methodology. The platform is
accessible to network participants and to the general public.
Abstract: We compare three categorical data clustering
algorithms with respect to the problem of classifying cultural data
related to the aesthetic judgment of comics artists. Such a
classification is very important in Comics Art theory since the
determination of any classes of similarities in such kind of data will
provide to art-historians very fruitful information of Comics Art-s
evolution. To establish this, we use a categorical data set and we
study it by employing three categorical data clustering algorithms.
The performances of these algorithms are compared each other,
while interpretations of the clustering results are also given.
Abstract: We develop a three-step fuzzy logic-based algorithm for clustering categorical attributes, and we apply it to analyze cultural data. In the first step the algorithm employs an entropy-based clustering scheme, which initializes the cluster centers. In the second step we apply the fuzzy c-modes algorithm to obtain a fuzzy partition of the data set, and the third step introduces a novel cluster validity index, which decides the final number of clusters.
