Abstract: In this study, dynamic responses of composite plates on elastic foundations subjected to impact and moving loads are investigated. The first order shear deformation (FSDT) theory is used for moderately thick plates. Pasternak-type (two-parameter) elastic foundation is assumed. Elastic foundation effects are integrated into the governing equations. It is assumed that plate is first hit by a mass as an impact type loading then the mass continues to move on the composite plate as a distributed moving loading, which resembles the aircraft landing on airport pavements. Impact and moving loadings are modeled by a mass-spring-damper system with a wheel. The wheel is assumed to be continuously in contact with the plate after impact. The governing partial differential equations of motion for displacements are converted into the ordinary differential equations in the time domain by using Galerkin’s method. Then, these sets of equations are solved by using the Runge-Kutta method. Several parameters such as vertical and horizontal velocities of the aircraft, volume fractions of the steel rebar in the reinforced concrete layer, and the different touchdown locations of the aircraft tire on the runway are considered in the numerical simulation. The results are compared with those of the ABAQUS, which is a commercial finite element code.
Abstract: In this article, a method is presented to effectively
estimate the deformed shape of a thick plate due to line heating. The
method uses a fifth order spline interpolation, with up to C3
continuity at specific points to compute the shape of the deformed
geometry. First and second order derivatives over a surface are the
resulting parameters of a given heating line on a plate. These
parameters are determined through experiments and/or finite element
simulations. Very accurate kriging models are fitted to real or virtual
surfaces to build-up a database of maps. Maps of first and second
order derivatives are then applied on numerical plate models to
evaluate their evolving shapes through a sequence of heating lines.
Adding an optimization process to this approach would allow
determining the trajectories of heating lines needed to shape complex
geometries, such as Francis turbine blades.
Abstract: 12.7-mm thick plates of 6061-T6511 aluminum alloy and high hardness steel (528 HV) were successfully joined by a friction stir bonding process using a tungsten-rhenium stir tool. Process parameter variation experiments, which included tool design geometry, plunge and traverse rates, tool offset, spindle tilt, and rotation speed, were conducted to develop a parameter set which yielded a defect free joint. Laboratory tensile tests exhibited yield stresses which exceed the strengths of comparable AA6061-to-AA6061 fusion and friction stir weld joints. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis also show atomic diffusion at the material interface region.
Abstract: The present work involves measurements to examine
the effects of initial conditions on aerodynamic and acoustic
characteristics of a Jet at M=0.8 by changing the orientation of sharp
edged orifice plate. A thick plate with chamfered orifice presented divergent and convergent openings when it was flipped over. The centerline velocity was found to decay more rapidly for divergent
orifice and that was consistent with the enhanced mass entrainment
suggesting quicker spread of the jet compared with that from the convergent orifice. The mixing layer region elucidated this effect of
initial conditions at an early stage – the growth was found to be comparatively more pronounced for the divergent orifice resulting in
reduced potential core size. The acoustic measurements, carried out in the near field noise region outside the jet within potential core
length, showed the jet from the divergent orifice to be less noisy. The frequency spectra of the noise signal exhibited that in the initial
region of comparatively thin mixing layer for the convergent orifice,
the peak registered a higher SPL and a higher frequency as well. The noise spectra and the mixing layer development suggested a direct correlation between the coherent structures developing in the initial
region of the jet and the noise captured in the surrounding near field.
Abstract: This paper presents an automated inspection algorithm
for a thick plate. Thick plates typically have various types of surface
defects, such as scabs, scratches, and roller marks. These defects have
individual characteristics including brightness and shape. Therefore, it
is not simple to detect all the defects. In order to solve these problems
and to detect defects more effectively, we propose a dual light
switching lighting method and a defect detection algorithm based on
Gabor filters.
Abstract: In the traditional buckling analysis of rectangular
plates the classical thin plate theory is generally applied, so
neglecting the plating shear deformation. It seems quite clear that this
method is not totally appropriate for the analysis of thick plates, so
that in the following the two variable refined plate theory proposed
by Shimpi (2006), that permits to take into account the transverse
shear effects, is applied for the buckling analysis of simply supported
isotropic rectangular plates, compressed in one and two orthogonal
directions.
The relevant results are compared with the classical ones and, for
rectangular plates under uniaxial compression, a new direct
expression, similar to the classical Bryan-s formula, is proposed for
the Euler buckling stress.
As the buckling analysis is a widely diffused topic for a variety of
structures, such as ship ones, some applications for plates uniformly
compressed in one and two orthogonal directions are presented and
the relevant theoretical results are compared with those ones obtained
by a FEM analysis, carried out by ANSYS, to show the feasibility of
the presented method.
Abstract: This article considers the positional buckling of
composite thick plates under thermal loading . For this purpose , the
complex finite strip method is used . In analysis of complex finite
strip, harmonic complex function in longitudinal direction , cubic
functions in transversal direction and parabola distribution of
transverse shear strain in thickness of thick plate based on higherorder
shear deformation theory are used . In given examples , the
effect of angles of stratification , number of layers , dimensions ratio
and length – to – thick ratio across critical temperature are
considered.
Abstract: Hysitron TriboIndenterTM TI 950 system has been
used for studying the local viscoelastic properties of porcine
intervertebral disc end plate by means of nanoscale mechanical
dynamic analysis. The specimen of an endplate was cut from fresh
porcine vertebra dissected from 16 month animal. The lumbar spine
motion segments were dissected and 5 millimeter thick plates of
vertebral body, endplate and annulus fibrosus were prepared for
nanoindentation. The surface of the sample was kept in physiological
solution during nanoindentation experiment. We obtained mechanical
characteristics of different areas of native endplate (endplate middle
and vertebra and annulus fibrosus boundary).
