Abstract: The Purdue University Research Reactor-1 (PUR-1) is a 10 kWth pool-type research reactor located at Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus. The reactor was recently upgraded to use entirely digital instrumentation and control systems. However, currently, there is no automated control system to regulate the power in the reactor. We propose a fuzzy logic controller as a form of digital twin to complement the existing digital instrumentation system to monitor and stabilize power control using existing experimental data. This work assesses the feasibility of a power controller based on a Fuzzy Rule-Based System (FRBS) by modelling and simulation with a MATLAB algorithm. The controller uses power error and reactor period as inputs and generates reactivity insertion as output. The reactivity insertion is then converted to control rod height using a logistic function based on information from the recorded experimental reactor control rod data. To test the capability of the proposed fuzzy controller, a point-kinetic reactor model is utilized based on the actual PUR-1 operation conditions and a Monte Carlo N-Particle simulation result of the core to numerically compute the neutronics parameters of reactor behavior. The Point Kinetic Equation (PKE) was employed to model dynamic characteristics of the research reactor since it explains the interactions between the spatial and time varying input and output variables efficiently. The controller is demonstrated computationally using various cases: startup, power maneuver, and shutdown. From the test results, it can be proved that the implemented fuzzy controller can satisfactorily regulate the reactor power to follow demand power without compromising nuclear safety measures.
Abstract: Installations of solar photovoltaic systems have increased considerably in the last decade. Therefore, it has been noticed that monitoring of meteorological data (solar irradiance, air temperature, wind velocity, etc.) is important to predict the potential of a given geographical area in solar energy production. In this sense, the present work compares two computational tools that are capable of estimating the energy generation of a photovoltaic system through correlation analyzes of solar radiation data: PVsyst software and an algorithm based on the PVlib package implemented in MATLAB. In order to achieve the objective, it was necessary to obtain solar radiation data (measured and from a solarimetric database), analyze the decomposition of global solar irradiance in direct normal and horizontal diffuse components, as well as analyze the modeling of the devices of a photovoltaic system (solar modules and inverters) for energy production calculations. Simulated results were compared with experimental data in order to evaluate the performance of the studied methods. Errors in estimation of energy production were less than 30% for the MATLAB algorithm and less than 20% for the PVsyst software.
Abstract: A total of 20 bottom sediment samples were collected from the Lekki Lagoon during the wet and dry season. The study was carried out to determine the textural characteristics, sediment distribution pattern and energy of transportation within the lagoon system. The sediment grain sizes and depth profiling was analyzed using dry sieving method and MATLAB algorithm for processing. The granulometric reveals fine grained sand both for the wet and dry season with an average mean value of 2.03 ϕ and -2.88 ϕ, respectively. Sediments were moderately sorted with an average inclusive standard deviation of 0.77 ϕ and -0.82 ϕ. Skewness varied from strongly coarse and near symmetrical 0.34- ϕ and 0.09 ϕ. The kurtosis average value was 0.87 ϕ and -1.4 ϕ (platykurtic and leptokurtic). Entirely, the bathymetry shows an average depth of 4.0 m. The deepest and shallowest area has a depth of 11.2 m and 0.5 m, respectively. High concentration of fine sand was observed at deep areas compared to the shallow areas during wet and dry season. Statistical parameter results show that the overall sediments are sorted, and deposited under low energy condition over a long distance. However, sediment distribution and sediment transport pattern of Lekki Lagoon is controlled by a low energy current and the down slope configuration of the bathymetry enhances the sorting and the deposition rate in the Lekki Lagoon.
Abstract: Computer technology and the Internet have made a
breakthrough in the existence of data communication. This has
opened a whole new way of implementing steganography to ensure
secure data transfer. Steganography is the fine art of hiding the
information. Hiding the message in the carrier file enables the
deniability of the existence of any message at all. This paper designs
a stego machine to develop a steganographic application to hide data
containing text in a computer video file and to retrieve the hidden
information. This can be designed by embedding text file in a video
file in such away that the video does not loose its functionality using
Least Significant Bit (LSB) modification method. This method
applies imperceptible modifications. This proposed method strives
for high security to an eavesdropper-s inability to detect hidden
information.
Abstract: Travel demand forecasting including four travel choices, i.e., trip generation, trip distribution, modal split and traffic assignment constructs the core of transportation planning. In its current application, travel demand forecasting has associated with three important issues, i.e., interface inconsistencies among four travel choices, inefficiency of commonly used solution algorithms, and undesirable multiple path solutions. In this paper, each of the three issues is extensively elaborated. An ideal unified framework for the combined model consisting of the four travel choices and variable demand functions is also suggested. Then, a few remarks are provided in the end of the paper
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks include small nodes which
have sensing ability; calculation and connection extend themselves
everywhere soon. Such networks have source limitation on
connection, calculation and energy consumption. So, since the nodes
have limited energy in sensor networks, the optimized energy
consumption in these networks is of more importance and has created
many challenges. The previous works have shown that by organizing
the network nodes in a number of clusters, the energy consumption
could be reduced considerably. So the lifetime of the network would
be increased. In this paper, we used the Queen-bee algorithm to
create energy efficient clusters in wireless sensor networks. The
Queen-bee (QB) is similar to nature in that the queen-bee plays a
major role in reproduction process. The QB is simulated with J-sim
simulator. The results of the simulation showed that the clustering by
the QB algorithm decreases the energy consumption with regard to
the other existing algorithms and increases the lifetime of the
network.
Abstract: This paper describes the optimization of a complex
dairy farm simulation model using two quite different methods of
optimization, the Genetic algorithm (GA) and the Lipschitz
Branch-and-Bound (LBB) algorithm. These techniques have been
used to improve an agricultural system model developed by Dexcel
Limited, New Zealand, which describes a detailed representation of
pastoral dairying scenarios and contains an 8-dimensional parameter
space. The model incorporates the sub-models of pasture growth and
animal metabolism, which are themselves complex in many cases.
Each evaluation of the objective function, a composite 'Farm
Performance Index (FPI)', requires simulation of at least a one-year
period of farm operation with a daily time-step, and is therefore
computationally expensive. The problem of visualization of the
objective function (response surface) in high-dimensional spaces is
also considered in the context of the farm optimization problem.
Adaptations of the sammon mapping and parallel coordinates
visualization are described which help visualize some important
properties of the model-s output topography. From this study, it is
found that GA requires fewer function evaluations in optimization
than the LBB algorithm.
