Abstract: Vibration analysis is the most important factor in preventive maintenance. Gas turbine vibration analysis is also one of the most challenging categories in most critical equipment monitoring systems. Utilities are heart of the process in big industrial plants like petrochemical zones. Vibration analysis methods and condition monitoring systems of this kind of equipment developed too much in recent years. On the other hand, too much operation condition consideration in this kind of equipment should be adjusted properly like inlet and outlet pressure and temperature for both turbine and compressor. In this paper the most important tools and hypothesis used for analyzing of gas turbine power plants discussed in details through a real case history related to an Alstom Typhoon gas turbine power plant in Iran oil industries. In addition, the basic principal of vibration behavior caused by mechanical unbalance in gas turbine rotor discussed in details.
Abstract: Smart grid is a new approach for electric power grid that uses information and communications technology to control the electric power grid. Smart grid provides real-time control of the electric power grid, controlling the direction of power flow or time of the flow. Control devices are installed on the power lines of the electric power grid to implement smart grid. The number of the control devices should be determined, in relation with the area one control device covers and the cost associated with the control devices. One approach to determine the number of the control devices is to use the data on the surplus power generated by home solar generators. In current implementations, the surplus power is sent all the way to the power plant, which may cause power loss. To reduce the power loss, the surplus power may be sent to a control device and sent to where the power is needed from the control device. Under assumption that the control devices are installed on a lattice of equal size squares, our goal is to figure out the optimal spacing between the control devices, where the power sharing area (the area covered by one control device) is kept small to avoid power loss, and at the same time the power sharing area is big enough to have no surplus power wasted. To achieve this goal, a simulation using landscape ecology method is conducted on a sample area. First an aerial photograph of the land of interest is turned into a mosaic map where each area is colored according to the ratio of the amount of power production to the amount of power consumption in the area. The amount of power consumption is estimated according to the characteristics of the buildings in the area. The power production is calculated by the sum of the area of the roofs shown in the aerial photograph and assuming that solar panels are installed on all the roofs. The mosaic map is colored in three colors, each color representing producer, consumer, and neither. We started with a mosaic map with 100 m grid size, and the grid size is grown until there is no red grid. One control device is installed on each grid, so that the grid is the area which the control device covers. As the result of this simulation we got 350m as the optimal spacing between the control devices that makes effective use of the surplus power for the sample area.
Abstract: Fuel rod analysis program transient (FRAPTRAN)
code was used to study the fuel rod performance during a postulated
large break loss of coolant accident (LBLOCA) in Maanshan nuclear
power plant (NPP). Previous transient results from thermal hydraulic
code, TRACE, with the same LBLOCA scenario, were used as input
boundary conditions for FRAPTRAN. The simulation results showed
that the peak cladding temperatures and the fuel centerline
temperatures were all below the 10CFR50.46 LOCA criteria. In
addition, the maximum hoop stress was 18 MPa and the oxide
thickness was 0.003mm for the present simulation cases, which are all
within the safety operation ranges. The present study confirms that this
analysis method, the FRAPTRAN code combined with TRACE, is an
appropriate approach to predict the fuel integrity under LBLOCA with
operational ECCS.
Abstract: Due to uncertainty of wind velocity, wind power generators don’t have deterministic output power. Utilizing wind power generation and thermal power plants together create new concerns for operation engineers of power systems. In this paper, a model is presented to implement the uncertainty of load and generated wind power which can be utilized in power system operation planning. Stochastic behavior of parameters is simulated by generating scenarios that can be solved by deterministic method. A mixed-integer linear programming method is used for solving deterministic generation scheduling problem. The proposed approach is applied to a 12-unit test system including 10 thermal units and 2 wind farms. The results show affectivity of piecewise linear model in unit commitment problems. Also using linear programming causes a considerable reduction in calculation times and guarantees convergence to the global optimum. Neglecting the uncertainty of wind velocity causes higher cost assessment of generation scheduling.
Abstract: This paper deals with use of pond ash and RBI Grade 81 for improvement in CBR values of clayey soil and grade-III materials used for base course of flexible pavement. The pond ash is a thermal power plant waste and RBI Grade 81 is chemical soil stabilizer. The geotechnical properties like Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), CBR value and Differential Free Swell (DFS) index of soil are tested in the laboratory for different mixes of soil, pond ash and RBI Grade 81 for different proportions. The mixes of grade-III material, pond ash and RBI Grade 81 tested for CBR test. From the study it is found that the geotechnical properties of clayey soil are improved significantly, if pond ash added with RBI Grade 81. The optimum mix recommended for subgrade is soil: pond ash: RBI Grade 81 in proportions of 76:20:4. The CBR value of grade-III base course treated with 20% pond ash and 4% RBI Grade 81 is increased by 125.93% as compared to untreated grade-III base course.
Abstract: Various advanced technologies will be adopted in Advanced Control Rooms (ACRs) of advanced Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), which is thought to increase operators’ performance. However, potential human factors issues coupled with digital technologies might be troublesome. Human factors issues in ACRs are identified and strategies (or countermeasures) for evaluating and analyzing each of issues are addressed in this study.
Abstract: This analysis of Kuosheng nuclear power plant (NPP)
was performed mainly by TRACE, assisted with FRAPTRAN and
FRAPCON. SNAP v2.2.1 and TRACE v5.0p3 are used to develop the
Kuosheng NPP SPU TRACE model which can simulate the turbine
trip without bypass transient. From the analysis of TRACE, the
important parameters such as dome pressure, coolant temperature and
pressure can be determined. Through these parameters, comparing
with the criteria which were formulated by United States Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC), we can determine whether the
Kuoshengnuclear power plant failed or not in the accident analysis.
However, from the data of TRACE, the fuel rods status cannot be
determined. With the information from TRACE and burn-up analysis
obtained from FRAPCON, FRAPTRAN analyzes more details about
the fuel rods in this transient. Besides, through the SNAP interface, the
data results can be presented as an animation. From the animation, the
TRACE and FRAPTRAN data can be merged together that may be
realized by the readers more easily. In this research, TRACE showed
that the maximum dome pressure of the reactor reaches to 8.32 MPa,
which is lower than the acceptance limit 9.58 MPa. Furthermore,
FRAPTRAN revels that the maximum strain is about 0.00165, which
is below the criteria 0.01. In addition, cladding enthalpy is 52.44 cal/g
which is lower than 170 cal/g specified by the USNRC NUREG-0800
Standard Review Plan.
Abstract: The coal utilization in thermal power plants in Malaysia has increased significantly which produces an enormous amount of coal combustion by-product (CCBP) or coal ash and poses severe disposal problem. As each coal ash is distinct, this study presents the geochemistry of the coal ash, in particular fly ash, produced from the combustion of local coal from Kuching Sarawak, Malaysia. The geochemical composition of the ash showed a high amount of silica, alumina, iron oxides and alkalies which was found to be a convenient starting material for the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites with the higher Na2O percentage being a positive factor for its alkaline activation; while the mineral phases are mainly quartz, mullite, calcium oxide, silica, and iron oxide hydrate. The geochemical changes upon alkali activation that can be predicted in a similar type of ash have been described in this paper. The result shows that this particular ash has a good potential for a high value industrial product like zeolites upon alkali activation.

The integrated model is further utilized to determine optimal operating conditions and study responses to various changes in input variables.
Abstract: This paper presents quantitative component criticality importance indices applicable for identifying and ranking critical components in the phase of thermal power plants design. Identifying critical components for power plant reliability provides one important input to decision-making and guidance throughout the development project. The study of components criticality importance indices to several characteristic structural schemes of conventional thermal power plant is presented and discussed.
Abstract: Electrification is a complex process and governed by various parameters. Modeling of power plant’s target efficiency or target heat rate is often formulated and compared with the actual values. This comparison not only implies the performance of the power plant but also reflects the energy losses possibly inherited in some of related equipment and processes. The current modeling of Coal-fired Mae Moh power plant was formulated at the first commissioning. Some of equipments were replaced due to its life time. Relatively outdated for 20 years, the utilization of the model is not accomplished. This work has focused on the development of the performance analysis model of aforementioned power plant according to the most updated and current working conditions. The model is more appropriate and shows accuracy in its analysis. Losses are detected and measures are introduced such that reduction in energy consumption, related cost, and also environment impacts can be anticipated.
Abstract: A method is proposed to extract faithful representative patterns from data set of observations when they are suffering from non-negligible fluctuations. Supposing time interval between measurements to be extremely small compared to observation time, it consists in defining first a subset of intermediate time intervals characterizing coherent behavior. Data projection on these intervals gives a set of curves out of which an ideally “perfect” one is constructed by taking the sup limit of them. Then comparison with average real curve in corresponding interval gives an efficiency parameter expressing the degradation consecutive to fluctuation effect. The method is applied to sunlight data collected in a specific place, where ideal sunlight is the one resulting from direct exposure at location latitude over the year, and efficiency is resulting from action of meteorological parameters, mainly cloudiness, at different periods of the year. The extracted information already gives interesting element of decision, before being used for analysis of plant control.
Abstract: This research is aimed to find optimal values of parameters of acacia wood chips combustion in a bubbling fluidized bed for electrification within the area of the Royal Thai Navy in Sattahip, Chonburi province, Thailand. The size of wood chips falls in the range of 25 mm in diameter. The bed temperature is set within the range of 800±10 oC with the air flow rate of 2.1-3.1 m/min corresponding to the air-fuel ratio between 0.71 to 1.03. The resulting thermal efficiency is approximately 95% with a thermal output of 474.76 kWth, which produced the electricity 0.131 kW-hr.
Abstract: Fly ash is a waste material of coal firing thermal
plants that is released from thermal power plants. It was defined as
very fine particles that are drifted upward which are taken up by the
flue gases. The emerging amount of fly ash in the world is
approximately 600 million tons per year. In our country, it is
expected that will be occurred 50 million tons of waste ash per year
until 2020. The fly ashes can be evaluated by using as adsorbent
material. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of
use of various fly ashes (Tuncbilek, Catalagzi, Orhaneli) like lowcost
adsorbents for heavy metal adsorption. First of all, fly ashes
were characterized. For this purpose; analyses such as XRD, XRF,
SEM and FT-IR were performed.
Abstract: Taiwan was the first country in Asia to announce
“Nuclear-Free Homeland" in 2002. In 2008, the new government
released the Sustainable Energy Policy Guidelines to lower the
nationwide CO2 emissions some time between 2016 and 2020 back to
the level of year 2008, further abatement of CO2 emissions is planed in
year 2025 when CO2 emissions will decrease to the level of year 2000.
Besides, under consideration of the issues of energy, environment and
economics (3E), the new government declared that the nuclear power
is a carbon-less energy option. This study analyses the effects of
nuclear power generation for CO2 abatement scenarios in Taiwan. The
MARKAL-MACRO energy model was adopted to evaluate economic
impacts and energy deployment due to life extension of existing
nuclear power plants and build new nuclear power units in CO2
abatement scenarios. The results show that CO2 abatement effort is
expensive. On the other hand, nuclear power is a cost-effective choice.
The GDP loss rate in the case of building new nuclear power plants is
around two thirds of the Nuclear-Free Homeland case. Nuclear power
generation has the capacity to provide large-scale CO2 free electricity.
Therefore, the results show that nuclear power is not only an option for
Taiwan, but also a requisite for Taiwan-s CO2 reduction strategy.
Abstract: According to the increasing utilization in power system, the transmission lines and power plants often operate in stability boundary and system probably lose its stable condition by over loading or occurring disturbance. According to the reasons that are mentioned, the prediction and recognition of voltage instability in power system has particular importance and it makes the network security stronger. This paper, by considering of power system contingencies based on the effects of them on Mega Watt Margin (MWM) and maximum loading point is focused in order to analyse the static voltage stability using continuation power flow method. The study has been carried out on IEEE 14-Bus Test System using Matlab and Psat softwares and results are presented.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with calculating boiler
efficiency as one of the most important types of performance
measurements in any steam power plant. That has a key role in
determining the overall effectiveness of the whole system within the
power station. For this calculation, a Visual-Basic program was
developed, and a steam power plant known as El-Khmus power
plant, Libya was selected as a case study. The calculation of the
boiler efficiency was applied by using heating balance method. The
findings showed how the maximum heat energy which produced
from the boiler increases the boiler efficiency through increasing the
temperature of the feed water, and decreasing the exhaust
temperature along with humidity levels of the of fuel used within the
boiler.
Abstract: The deficit of power supply in Macedonia is almost 30% or reached up to 3000 GWh in a year. The existing thermal and hydro power plants are not enough to cover the power and energy, so the import increases every year. Therefore, in order to have more domestic energy supply, the new trends in renewable and energy efficiency should be implemented in power sector. The paper gives some perspectives for development of the power system in Macedonia, taking into account the growth of electricity demand and in the same time with implementation of renewable and energy efficiency. The development of power system is made for the period up to 2030 with the period of every 5 years.
Abstract: this paper presents an auto-regressive network called the Auto-Regressive Multi-Context Recurrent Neural Network (ARMCRN), which forecasts the daily peak load for two large power plant systems. The auto-regressive network is a combination of both recurrent and non-recurrent networks. Weather component variables are the key elements in forecasting because any change in these variables affects the demand of energy load. So the AR-MCRN is used to learn the relationship between past, previous, and future exogenous and endogenous variables. Experimental results show that using the change in weather components and the change that occurred in past load as inputs to the AR-MCRN, rather than the basic weather parameters and past load itself as inputs to the same network, produce higher accuracy of predicted load. Experimental results also show that using exogenous and endogenous variables as inputs is better than using only the exogenous variables as inputs to the network.
