Abstract: The virulent debates that have dogged research on,
and the diffusion of, a wide range of technologies indicate a growing
loss of confidence in what we might call, the techno-scientific
endeavour to reshape the world. Utopian images of a world rendered
ever more amenable to human desires are now closely shadowed by
just as compelling dystopian visions of monstrosity and disaster that
are nevertheless constructed from the same cultural material. The
paper uses the case of the debates over developments in reproductive
technology to offer some observations on the ways in which such
technologies routinely become enmirred in cultural ambivalence.
Abstract: In this paper, we proposed an invention of an
accessory into a communication device that will help humans to be
connected universally. Generally, this device will be made up of
crystal and will combine many technologies that will enable the user
to run various applications and software anywhere and everywhere.
Bringing up the concept of from being user friendly, we had used the
crystal as the main material of the device that will trap the
surrounding lights to produce projection of its screen. This leads to a
lesser energy consumption and allows smaller sized battery to be
used, making the device less bulky. Additionally, we proposed the
usage of micro batteries as our energy source. Thus, researches
regarding crystal were made along with explanations in details of
specification and function of the technology used in the device.
Finally, we had also drawn several views of the invention from
different sides to be visualized.
Abstract: Hollywood has produced various blockbusters on the
subject of disasters. Entering the 2000s, disaster films began to be
produced in the East Asian region as well, and as most of them were
successful, disaster films have settled as a popular genre in the region.
East Asian disaster films utilize a plot structure similar to Hollywood
films but, at the same time, represent East Asian people-s unique value
system. East Asian people-s social behavior pattern defined as
collectivism is a characteristic that distinguishes this region from other
cultural regions. In order to examine Confucian culture in disaster
films on the premise of the difference, the author conducts this
research as follows. This study first reviews the concepts disaster and
disaster film, and understands the genre through analyzing the
narrative structure and style. In addition, it discusses collectivism, a
characteristic of the East Asian region distinguished from the West,
and investigates Confucian culture in films and examines differences
among Korean, Chinese and Japanese Confucianism. Films selected
for this study are Tidal Wave (Korea, 2009), After Shock (China,
2006), and The Sinking of Japan (Japan, 2006). Using the characters in
these films, we analyze how Confucian thought is described and
reproduced.
Abstract: Stegnography is a new way of secret
communication the most widely used mechanism on account
of its simplicity is the use of the least significant bit. We have
used the least significant bit (2 LSB and 4 LSB) substitution
method. Depending upon the characteristics of the individual
portions of cover image we decide whether to use 2 LSB or 4
LSB thus it is an adaptive stegnography technique. We used
one of the three channels to behave as indicator to indicate the
presence of hidden data in other two channels. The module
showed impressive results in terms of capacity to hide the
data. In proposed method, instead of using RGB color space
directly, YCbCr color space is used to make use of human
visual system characteristic.
Abstract: The research purpose was to evaluate the effect of
Active Imagination Technique (AIT) for bruxism treatment. This
project was approved by the Ethics Committee on Human Research
(CAAE: 05619512.9.0000.0109). Twenty-one volunteers using
interocclusal splint completed the study. Initially they filled in a
questionnaire about their condition, composed of objective questions
on signs and symptoms. Following they were underwent asingle
session of AIT. After 15 days, the volunteers met again the same
initial questionnaire. The results were compared and showed that the
vast majority had pain symptoms, difficulty opening the mouth, pain
when chewing, reduced, some of the participants abandoned the
interocclusal splint during the evaluate period. It is concluded that the
technique can be used in bruxism treatment. Results seem to be
promising and demonstrates the need of highlighting Active
Imagination Technique since it points a possibility of bruxism cure
and that is unprecedented.
Abstract: Quality control in ceramic tile manufacturing is hard, labor intensive and it is performed in a harsh industrial environment with noise, extreme temperature and humidity. It can be divided into color analysis, dimension verification, and surface defect detection, which is the main purpose of our work. Defects detection is still based on the judgment of human operators while most of the other manufacturing activities are automated so, our work is a quality control enhancement by integrating a visual control stage using image processing and morphological operation techniques before the packing operation to improve the homogeneity of batches received by final users.
Abstract: Sign language recognition has been a topic of research since the first data glove was developed. Many researchers have attempted to recognize sign language through various techniques. However none of them have ventured into the area of Pakistan Sign Language (PSL). The Boltay Haath project aims at recognizing PSL gestures using Statistical Template Matching. The primary input device is the DataGlove5 developed by 5DT. Alternative approaches use camera-based recognition which, being sensitive to environmental changes are not always a good choice. This paper explains the use of Statistical Template Matching for gesture recognition in Boltay Haath. The system recognizes one handed alphabet signs from PSL.
Abstract: Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a
practical non-invasive optical technique to detect characteristic of
hemoglobin density dynamics response during functional activation of
the cerebral cortex. In this paper, fNIRS measurements were made in
the area of motor cortex from C4 position according to international
10-20 system. Three subjects, aged 23 - 30 years, were participated in
the experiment.
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the effects of different motor
activation tasks of the hemoglobin density dynamics of fNIRS signal.
The chaotic concept based on deterministic dynamics is an important
feature in biological signal analysis. This paper employs the chaotic
properties which is a novel method of nonlinear analysis, to analyze
and to quantify the chaotic property in the time series of the
hemoglobin dynamics of the various motor imagery tasks of fNIRS
signal. Usually, hemoglobin density in the human brain cortex is
found to change slowly in time. An inevitable noise caused by various
factors is to be included in a signal. So, principle component analysis
method (PCA) is utilized to remove high frequency component. The
phase pace is reconstructed and evaluated the Lyapunov spectrum, and
Lyapunov dimensions. From the experimental results, it can be
conclude that the signals measured by fNIRS are chaotic.
Abstract: Business process automation is an important task in an
enterprise business environment software development. The
requirements of processing acceleration and automation level of
enterprises are inherently different from one organization to another.
We present a methodology and system for automation of business
process management system architecture by multi-agent collaboration
based on SOA. Design layer processes are modeled in semantic
markup language for web services application. At the core of our
system is considering certain types of human tasks to their further
automation across over multiple platform environments. An
improved abnormality processing with model for automation of
BPMS architecture by multi-agent collaboration based on SOA is
introduced. Validating system for efficiency of process automation,
an application for educational knowledge base instance would also be
described.
Abstract: This essay presents applicative methods to reduce human exposure levels in the area around base transceiver stations in a environment with multiple sources based on ITU-T recommendation K.70. An example is presented to understand the mitigation techniques and their results and also to learn how they can be applied, especially in developing countries where there is not much research on non-ionizing radiations.
Abstract: This study on “The relationship between human
resource practices and Firm Performance is a speculative
investigation research. The purpose of this research are (1) to provide
and to understand of HRM history and current HR practices in the
Philippines (2) to examine the extent of HRM practice among its
Philippine firms effectively; (3) to investigate the relationship
between HRM practice and firm performance in the Philippines. The
survey was done to 233 companies in the Philippines. The
questionnaire is divided into three parts a) to gathers information on
the profile of respondent, b) to measures the extent to which human
resource practices are being practiced in their organization c) to
measure the organizations performance as perceived by human
resource managers and top executives as compared with their
competitors in the same industry. As a result an interesting finding
was that almost 50 percent of firm performance is affected by the
extent of implementation of HR practices in the firm. These results
show that HR practices that are in line with the organization’s
strategic goals are important for future performance.
Abstract: Several studies have been carried out, using various techniques, including neural networks, to discriminate vigilance states in humans from electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, but we are still far from results satisfactorily useable results. The work presented in this paper aims at improving this status with regards to 2 aspects. Firstly, we introduce an original procedure made of the association of two neural networks, a self organizing map (SOM) and a learning vector quantization (LVQ), that allows to automatically detect artefacted states and to separate the different levels of vigilance which is a major breakthrough in the field of vigilance. Lastly and more importantly, our study has been oriented toward real-worked situation and the resulting model can be easily implemented as a wearable device. It benefits from restricted computational and memory requirements and data access is very limited in time. Furthermore, some ongoing works demonstrate that this work should shortly results in the design and conception of a non invasive electronic wearable device.
Abstract: The most common domestic birds live in Turkey are: crows (Corvus corone), pigeons (Columba livia), sparrows (Passer domesticus), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and blackbirds (Turdus merula). These birds give damage to the agricultural areas and make dirty the human life areas. In order to send away these birds, some different materials and methods such as chemicals, treatments, colored lights, flash and audible scarers are used. It is possible to see many studies about chemical methods in the literatures. However there is not enough works regarding audible bird scarers are reported in the literature. Therefore, a solar powered bird scarer was designed, manufactured and tested in this experimental investigation. Firstly, to understand the sensitive level of these domestic birds against to the audible scarer, many series preliminary studies were conducted. These studies showed that crows are the most resistant against to the audible bird scarer when compared with pigeons, sparrows, starlings and blackbirds. Therefore the solar powered audible bird scarer was tested on crows. The scarer was tested about one month during April- May, 2007. 18 different common known predators- sounds (voices or calls) of domestic birds from Falcon (Falco eleonorae), Falcon (Buteo lagopus), Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Montagu-s harrier (Circus pygargus) and Owl (Glaucidium passerinum) were selected for test of the scarer. It was seen from the results that the reaction of the birds was changed depending on the predators- sound type, camouflage of the scarer, sound quality and volume, loudspeaker play and pause periods in one application. In addition, it was also seen that the sound from Falcon (Buteo lagopus) was most effective on crows and the scarer was enough efficient.
Abstract: A direct adaptive controller for a class of unknown nonlinear discrete-time systems is presented in this article. The proposed controller is constructed by fuzzy rules emulated network (FREN). With its simple structure, the human knowledge about the plant is transferred to be if-then rules for setting the network. These adjustable parameters inside FREN are tuned by the learning mechanism with time varying step size or learning rate. The variation of learning rate is introduced by main theorem to improve the system performance and stabilization. Furthermore, the boundary of adjustable parameters is guaranteed through the on-line learning and membership functions properties. The validation of the theoretical findings is represented by some illustrated examples.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the linkage between migration,
economic globalization and terrorism concerns. On a broad level, I
analyze Canadian economic and political considerations, searching
for causal relationships between political and economic actors on the
one hand, and Canadian immigration law on the other. Specifically,
the paper argues that there are contradictory impulses affecting state
sovereignty. These impulses are are currently being played out in the
field of Canadian immigration law through several proposed changes
to Canada-s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). These
changes reflect an ideological conception of sovereignty that is
intrinsically connected with decision-making capacity centered on an
individual. This conception of sovereign decision-making views
Parliamentary debate and bureaucratic inefficiencies as both equally
responsible for delaying essential decisions relating to the protection
of state sovereignty, economic benefits and immigration control This
paper discusses these concepts in relation to Canadian immigration
policy under Canadian governments over the past twenty five years.
Abstract: Mouse L929 fibroblastic cell line, which is widely
used in many experiment aspects, was tested for their differentiation
potency in osteogenic differentiation and adipogenic differentiation.
Human dermal fibroblasts, which their differentiation potency are
still be in confliction, also be taken in the experiment. The
differentiations were conducted by using the inducing medium
ingredients which is generally used to induce differentiation of stem
cells. By the inducing media used, L929 mouse fibroblasts
successfully underwent osteogenic differentiation and adipogenic
differentiation while human dermal fibroblasts underwent only
osteogenic differentiation but not for adipogenic differentiation.
Human dermal fibroblasts are hard to be differentiated in adipogenic
lineage and need specific proper condition for induction.
Abstract: In recent years, the number of the cases of information
leaks is increasing. Companies and Research Institutions make various
actions against information thefts and security accidents. One of the
actions is adoption of the crime prevention system, including the
monitoring system by surveillance cameras. In order to solve
difficulties of multiple cameras monitoring, we develop the automatic
human tracking system using mobile agents through multiple
surveillance cameras to track target persons. In this paper, we develop
the monitor which confirms mobile agents tracing target persons, and
the simulator of video picture analysis to construct the tracking
algorithm.
Abstract: The history of technology and banking is examined as
it relates to risk and technological determinism. It is proposed that
the services that banks offer are determined by technology and that
banks must adopt new technologies to be competitive. The adoption
of technologies paradoxically forces the adoption of other new
technologies to protect the bank from the increased risk of
technology. This cycle will lead to bank examiners and regulators to
focus on human behavior, not on the ever changing technology.
Abstract: System development life cycle (SDLC) is a
process uses during the development of any system. SDLC
consists of four main phases: analysis, design, implement and
testing. During analysis phase, context diagram and data flow
diagrams are used to produce the process model of a system.
A consistency of the context diagram to lower-level data flow
diagrams is very important in smoothing up developing
process of a system. However, manual consistency check from
context diagram to lower-level data flow diagrams by using a
checklist is time-consuming process. At the same time, the
limitation of human ability to validate the errors is one of the
factors that influence the correctness and balancing of the
diagrams. This paper presents a tool that automates the
consistency check between Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs)
based on the rules of DFDs. The tool serves two purposes: as
an editor to draw the diagrams and as a checker to check the
correctness of the diagrams drawn. The consistency check
from context diagram to lower-level data flow diagrams is
embedded inside the tool to overcome the manual checking
problem.
Abstract: The method of gait identification based on the nearest neighbor classification technique with motion similarity assessment by the dynamic time warping is proposed. The model based kinematic motion data, represented by the joints rotations coded by Euler angles and unit quaternions is used. The different pose distance functions in Euler angles and quaternion spaces are considered. To evaluate individual features of the subsequent joints movements during gait cycle, joint selection is carried out. To examine proposed approach database containing 353 gaits of 25 humans collected in motion capture laboratory is used. The obtained results are promising. The classifications, which takes into consideration all joints has accuracy over 91%. Only analysis of movements of hip joints allows to correctly identify gaits with almost 80% precision.
