Abstract: Recently, with the appearance of smart cards, many
user authentication protocols using smart card have been proposed to
mitigate the vulnerabilities in user authentication process. In 2004,
Das et al. proposed a ID-based user authentication protocol that is
secure against ID-theft and replay attack using smart card. In 2009,
Wang et al. showed that Das et al.-s protocol is not secure to randomly
chosen password attack and impersonation attack, and proposed an
improved protocol. Their protocol provided mutual authentication and
efficient password management. In this paper, we analyze the security
weaknesses and point out the vulnerabilities of Wang et al.-s protocol.
Abstract: Today-s business has inevitably been set in the global supply chain management environment. International transportation has never played such an important role in the global supply chain network, because movement of shipments from one country to another tends to be more frequent than ever before. This paper studies international transportation problems experienced by an international transportation company. Because of the limited fleet capacity, the transportation company has to hire additional trucks from two countries in advance. However, customer-s shipment information is uncertain, and decisions have to be made before accurate information can be obtained. This paper proposes a stochastic mixed 0-1 programming model to solve the international transportation problems under uncertain demand. A series of experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed stochastic model.
Abstract: The paper addresses a problem of optimal staffing in
open shop environment. The problem is to determine the optimal
number of operators serving a given number of machines to fulfill the
number of independent operations while minimizing staff idle. Using
a Gantt chart presentation of the problem it is modeled as twodimensional
cutting stock problem. A mixed-integer programming
model is used to get minimal job processing time (makespan) for
fixed number of machines' operators. An algorithm for optimal openshop
staffing is developed based on iterative solving of the
formulated optimization task. The execution of the developed
algorithm provides optimal number of machines' operators in the
sense of minimum staff idle and optimal makespan for that number of
operators. The proposed algorithm is tested numerically for a real life
staffing problem. The testing results show the practical applicability
for similar open shop staffing problems.
Abstract: The localization of software products is essential for reaching the users of the international market. An important task for this is the translation of the user interface into local national languages. As graphical interfaces are usually optimized for the size of the texts in the original language, after the translation certain user controls (e.g. text labels and buttons in dialogs) may grow in such a manner that they slip above each other. This not only causes an unpleasant appearance but also makes the use of the program more difficult (or even impossible) which implies that the arrangement of the controls must be corrected subsequently. The correction should preserve the original structure of the interface (e.g. the relation of logically coherent controls), furthermore, it is important to keep the nicely proportioned design: the formation of large empty areas should be avoided. This paper describes an algorithm that automatically rearranges the controls of a graphical user interface based on the principles above. The algorithm has been implemented and integrated into a translation support system and reached results pleasant for the human eye in most test cases.
Abstract: This paper has as its main aim to analyse how
corporate web pages can become an essential tool in order to detect
strategic trends by firms or sectors, and even a primary source for
benchmarking. This technique has made it possible to identify the key
issues in the strategic management of the most excellent large Spanish
firms and also to describe trends in their long-range planning, a way of
working that can be generalised to any country or firm group. More
precisely, two objectives were sought. The first one consisted in showing
the way in which corporate websites make it possible to obtain direct
information about the strategic variables which can define firms. This
tool is dynamic (since web pages are constantly updated) as well as
direct and reliable, since the information comes from the firm itself, not
from comments of third parties (such as journalists, academicians,
consultants...). When this information is analysed for a group of firms,
one can observe their characteristics in terms of both managerial tasks
and business management. As for the second objective, the methodology
proposed served to describe the corporate profile of the large Spanish
enterprises included in the Ibex35 (the Ibex35 or Iberia Index is the
reference index in the Spanish Stock Exchange and gathers periodically
the 35 most outstanding Spanish firms). An attempt is therefore made to
define the long-range planning that would be characteristic of the largest
Spanish firms.
Abstract: The use of technology is increasingly adopted to
support flexible learning in Higher Education institutions. The
adoption of more sophisticated technologies offers a broad range of
facilities for communication and resource sharing, thereby creating a
flexible learning environment that facilitates and even encourages
students not to physically attend classes. However this emerging
trend seems to contradict class attendance requirements within
universities, inevitably leading to a dilemma between amending
traditional regulations and creating new policies for the higher
education institutions. This study presents an investigation into
student engagement in a technology enhanced/driven flexible
environment along with its relationship to attainment. We propose an
approach to modelling engagement from different perspectives in
terms of indicators and then consider what impact these indicators
have on student academic performance. We have carried out a case
study on the relation between attendance and attainment in a flexible
environment. Although our preliminary results show attendance is
quantitatively correlated with successful student development and
learning outcomes, our results also indicate there is a cohort that did
not follow such a pattern. Nevertheless the preliminary results could
provide an insight into pilot studies in the wider deployment of new
technology to support flexible learning.
Abstract: This paper presents a systematic approach for
designing Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) based
supplementary damping controllers for damping low frequency
oscillations in a single-machine infinite-bus power system. The
design problem of the proposed controller is formulated as an
optimization problem and RCGA is employed to search for optimal
controller parameters. By minimizing the time-domain based
objective function, in which the deviation in the oscillatory rotor
speed of the generator is involved; stability performance of the
system is improved. Simulation results are presented and compared
with a conventional method of tuning the damping controller
parameters to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed
design approach.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a method for edge
segmentation of satellite images based on 2-D Phase Congruency
(PC) model. The proposed approach is composed by two steps: The
contextual non linear smoothing algorithm (CNLS) is used to smooth
the input images. Then, the 2D stretched Gabor filter (S-G filter)
based on proposed angular variation is developed in order to avoid
the multiple responses in the previous work. An assessment of our
proposed method performance is provided in terms of accuracy of
satellite image edge segmentation. The proposed method is compared
with others known approaches.
Abstract: Understanding driving behavior is a complicated
researching topic. To describe accurate speed, flow and density of a
multiclass users traffic flow, an adequate model is needed. In this
study, we propose the concept of standard passenger car equivalent
(SPCE) instead of passenger car equivalent (PCE) to estimate the
influence of heavy vehicles and slow cars. Traffic cellular automata
model is employed to calibrate and validate the results. According to
the simulated results, the SPCE transformations present good
accuracy.
Abstract: This paper proposes a method to improve the shortest
path problem on a NURBS (Non-uniform rational basis spline) surfaces.
It comes from an application of the theory in classic differential
geometry on surfaces and can improve the distance problem not only
on surfaces but in the Euclidean 3-space R3 .
Abstract: In this paper, a new alignment method based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is presented. The PSO algorithm is used for locating the optimal coupling position with the highest optical power with three-degrees of freedom alignment. This algorithm gives an interesting results without a need to go thru the complex mathematical modeling of the alignment system. The proposed algorithm is validated considering practical tests considering the alignment of two Single Mode Fibers (SMF) and the alignment of SMF and PCF fibers.
Abstract: This paper considers a robust recovery of sparse frequencies
from partial phase-only measurements. With the proposed
method, sparse frequencies can be reconstructed, which makes full
use of the sparse distribution in the Fourier representation of the
complex-valued time signal. Simulation experiments illustrate the
proposed method-s advantages over conventional methods in both
noiseless and additive white Gaussian noise cases.
Abstract: Clustering is one of an interesting data mining topics
that can be applied in many fields. Recently, the problem of cluster
analysis is formulated as a problem of nonsmooth, nonconvex optimization,
and an algorithm for solving the cluster analysis problem
based on nonsmooth optimization techniques is developed. This
optimization problem has a number of characteristics that make it
challenging: it has many local minimum, the optimization variables
can be either continuous or categorical, and there are no exact
analytical derivatives. In this study we show how to apply a particular
class of optimization methods known as pattern search methods
to address these challenges. These methods do not explicitly use
derivatives, an important feature that has not been addressed in
previous studies. Results of numerical experiments are presented
which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Abstract: Recently, content delivery services have grown rapidly
over the Internet. For ASPs (Application Service Provider) providing
content delivery services, P2P architecture is beneficial to reduce
outgoing traffic from content servers. On the other hand, ISPs are
suffering from the increase in P2P traffic. The P2P traffic is
unnecessarily redundant because the same content or the same
fractions of content are transferred through an inter-ISP link several
times. Subscriber ISPs have to pay a transit fee to upstream ISPs based
on the volume of inter-ISP traffic. In order to solve such problems,
several works have been done for the purpose of P2P traffic reduction.
However, these existing works cannot control the traffic volume of a
certain link. In order to solve such an ISP-s operational requirement,
we propose a method to control traffic volume for a link within a
preconfigured upper bound value. We evaluated that the proposed
method works well by conducting a simulation on a 1,000-user scale.
We confirm that the traffic volume could be controlled at a lower level
than the upper bound for all evaluated conditions. Moreover, our
method could control the traffic volume at 98.95% link usage against
the target value.
Abstract: Unstructured peer-to-peer networks are popular due to
its robustness and scalability. Query schemes that are being used in
unstructured peer-to-peer such as the flooding and interest-based
shortcuts suffer various problems such as using large communication
overhead long delay response. The use of routing indices has been a
popular approach for peer-to-peer query routing. It helps the query
routing processes to learn the routing based on the feedbacks
collected. In an unstructured network where there is no global
information available, efficient and low cost routing approach is
needed for routing efficiency.
In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism for query-feedback
oriented routing indices to achieve routing efficiency in unstructured
network at a minimal cost. The approach also applied information
retrieval technique to make sure the content of the query is
understandable and will make the routing process not just based to
the query hits but also related to the query content. Experiments have
shown that the proposed mechanism performs more efficient than
flood-based routing.
Abstract: From a long time age, human beings have chosen their
place of residence and comfort so that those places would have
relatively ideal natural and climatic conditions. For this reason, from
the beginning, the civilizations have been formed in the susceptible
natural regions such as Mesopotamia in Iran and Nile coasts in
Egypt. Also, the core of human density has been made in the form of
an oasis in the deserts.
Regarding the formation and combination of the native
architecture in different regions of Iran, we find that different
properties of these climates have affected frequently the formation of
cities and the architectural combinations of these regions. Thus, the
precise determinations of climatic areas and attaining the climatic
properties of different regions have a great deal of importance in
presenting appropriate and compatible-with-climate designs.
Abstract: This paper presents a new type of mechanism and trajectory planning strategy for bipedal walking robot. The newly designed mechanism is able to improve the performance of bipedal walking robot in terms of energy efficiency and weight reduction by utilizing minimum number of actuators. The usage of parallelogram mechanism eliminates the needs of having an extra actuator at the knee joint. This mechanism works together with the joint space trajectory planning in order to realize straight legged walking which cannot be achieved by conventional inverse kinematics trajectory planning due to the singularity. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is confirmed by computer simulation results.
Abstract: The bridge vibration due to traffic loading has been a
subject of extensive research during the last decades. A number of
these studies are concerned with the effects of the unevenness of
roadways on the dynamic responses of highway bridges. The road
unevenness is often described as a random process that constitutes
of different wavelengths. Thus, the study focuses on examining
the effects of the random description of roadways on the dynamic
response and its variance. A new setting of variance based sensitivity
analysis is proposed and used to identify and quantify the
contributions of the roadway-s wavelengths to the variance of the
dynamic response. Furthermore, the effect of the vehicle-s speed on
the dynamic response is studied.
Abstract: A new and highly efficient architecture for elliptic curve scalar point multiplication which is optimized for a binary field recommended by NIST and is well-suited for elliptic curve cryptographic (ECC) applications is presented. To achieve the maximum architectural and timing improvements we have reorganized and reordered the critical path of the Lopez-Dahab scalar point multiplication architecture such that logic structures are implemented in parallel and operations in the critical path are diverted to noncritical paths. With G=41, the proposed design is capable of performing a field multiplication over the extension field with degree 163 in 11.92 s with the maximum achievable frequency of 251 MHz on Xilinx Virtex-4 (XC4VLX200) while 22% of the chip area is occupied, where G is the digit size of the underlying digit-serial finite field multiplier.
Abstract: In order to derive important parameters concerning
mobile subscriber MS with ongoing calls in Low Earth Orbit Mobile
Satellite Systems LEO MSSs, a positioning system had to be
integrated into MSS in order to localize mobile subscribers MSs and
track them during the connection. Such integration is regarded as a
complex implementation. We propose in this paper a novel method
based on advantages of mobility model of Low Earth Orbit Mobile
Satellite System LEO MSS which allows the evaluation of instant of
subsequent handover of a MS even if its location is unknown. This
method is utilized to propose a Dynamic Channel Reservation DCRlike
scheme based on the DCR scheme previously proposed in
literature. Results presented show that DCR-like technique gives
different QoS performance than DCR. Indeed, an improve in
handover blocking probability and an increase in new call blocking
probability are observed for the DCR-like technique.
