Abstract: Banana pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem are
agricultural residues that can be used for conversion to bio-char, biooil,
and gases by using thermochemical process. The aim of this work
is to characterize banana pseudo-stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem
through proximate analysis, elemental analysis, chemical analysis,
thermo-gravimetric analysis, and heating calorific value. The ash
contents of the banana pseudo-stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem are
11.0 mf wt.% and 20.6 mf wt.%; while the carbon content of banana
pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem are 37.9 mf wt.% and 35.58 mf
wt.% respectively. The molecular formulas for banana stem and
banana fruit-bunch-stem are C24H33NO26 and C19H29NO33
respectively. The measured higher heating values of banana pseudostem
and banana fruit-bunch-stem are 15.5MJ/kg and 12.7 MJ/kg
respectively. By chemical analysis, the lignin, cellulose, and
hemicellulose contents in the samples will also be presented. The
feasibility of the banana wastes to be a feedstock for thermochemical
process in comparison with other biomass will be discussed in this
paper.
Abstract: This paper is aimed to investigate farmers’ level of awareness and behavior of chemical pesticide uses, by using a case study of Suan Luang Sub- District Municipality, Ampawa, Samut Songkram Province. Questionnaire was employed in this study with the farmers from 46 households to explore their level of awareness in chemical pesticide uses, while interview and observation were adopted in exploring their behavior of chemical pesticide uses. The findings reflected the farmers’ high level of awareness in chemical pesticide uses in the hazardous effects of the chemical to human and environmental health, while their behavior of chemical pesticide uses explained their awareness paid to the right way of using pesticides, for instance reading the direction on the label, keeping children and animals away from the area of pesticide mixing, covering body with clothes and wearing hat and mask, no smoking, eating or drinking during pesticide spray or standing in windward direction.

Abstract: In industrial environments, the heat exchanger is a
necessary component to any strategy of energy conversion. Much of
thermal energy used in industrial processes passes at least one times
by a heat exchanger, and methods systems recovering thermal
energy.
This survey paper tries to presents in a systemic way an sample
control of a heat exchanger by comparison between three controllers
LQR (linear quadratic regulator), PID (proportional, integrator and
derivate) and Pole Placement. All of these controllers are used mainly
in industrial sectors (chemicals, petrochemicals, steel, food
processing, energy production, etc…) of transportation (automotive,
aeronautics), but also in the residential sector and tertiary (heating, air
conditioning, etc...) The choice of a heat exchanger, for a given
application depends on many parameters: field temperature and
pressure of fluids, and physical properties of aggressive fluids,
maintenance and space. It is clear that the fact of having an
exchanger appropriate, well-sized, well made and well used allows
gain efficiency and energy processes.
Abstract: In this study, we developed a complementary electrochromic device consisting of WO3 and NiO films fabricated by rf-magnetron sputtered. The electrochromic properties of WO3 and NiO films were investigated using cyclic voltammograms (CV), performed on WO3 and NiO films immersed in an electrolyte of 1 M LiClO4 in propylene carbonate (PC). Optical and electrochemical of the films, as a function of coloration–bleaching cycle, were characterized using an UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer and cyclic voltammetry (CV). After investigating the properties of WO3 film, NiO film, and complementary electrochromic devices, we concluded that this device provides good reversibility, low power consumption of -2.5 V in color state, high variation of transmittance of 58.96%, changes in optical density of 0.81 and good memory effect under open-circuit conditions. In addition, electrochromic component penetration rate can be retained below 20% within 24h, showing preferred memory features; however, component coloring and bleaching response time are about 33s.
Abstract: We have developed a polyimide based neural interface electrode to record nerve signals from the sciatic nerve of a rat. The neural interface electrode has a split-ring shape, with four protruding gold electrodes for recording, and two reference gold electrodes around the split-ring. The split-ring electrode can be opened up to encircle the sciatic nerve. The four electrodes can be bent to sit on top of the nerve and hold the device in position, while the split-ring frame remains flat. In comparison, while traditional cuff electrodes can only fit certain sizes of the nerve, the developed device can fit a variety of rat sciatic nerve dimensions from 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm, and adapt to the chronic changes in the nerve as the electrode tips are bendable. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement was conducted. The gold electrode impedance is on the order of 10 kΩ, showing excellent charge injection capacity to record neural signals.

Abstract: Utilizing solar energy in producing electricity can minimize environmental pollution generated by fossil fuel in producing electricity. Our research was base on the extraction of dye from Roystonea regia fruit by using methanol as solvent. The dye extracts were used as sensitizers in Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs). Study was done on the electrical properties from the extracts of Roystonea regia fruit as Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs). The absorptions of the extracts and extracts with dye were determined at different wavelengths (350-1000nm). Absorption peak was observed at 1.339 at wavelength 400nm. The obtained values for methanol extract Roystonea regia extract are, Imp = 0.015mA, Vmp = 12.0mV, fill factor = 0.763, Isc= 0.018 mA and Voc = 13.1 mV and efficiency of 0.32%. .The phytochemical screening was taken and it was observed that Roystonea regia extract contained less of anthocyanin compared to flavonoids. The nanostructured dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) will provide economically credible alternative to present day silicon p–n junction photovoltaic.
Abstract: Portugal is an important wine and olive oil producer, activities which generate a high quantity of residues commonly called grape stalks and olive cake, respectively. In this work grape stalks and olive cake were used as lignocellulosic adsorbents for wastewater containing lead treatment. To attain a better knowledge of the factors that could influence the quality of the treated wastewater, a chemical characterization of the materials used in the treatment was done. To access the ecotoxicological safety of the treated wastewater, several tests were performed.
The results of the toxicity test show that the samples leachate has a mild effect on the living models tested. The tests performed in lemna and bacteria were the most sensible to toxicity effects of the samples. The results obtained in this work evidenced the importance of use of simple and fast toxicity tests to predict impacts in the environment.
Abstract: A theoretical approach to consider formation of chemical compound layer at the interface between initial substances A and B due to the interfacial interaction and diffusion is developed. It is considered situation when speed of interfacial interaction is large enough and diffusion of A-atoms through AB-layer is much more then diffusion of B-atoms. Atoms from A-layer diffuse toward B-atoms and form AB-atoms on the surface of B-layer. B-atoms are assumed to be immobile. The growth kinetics of the AB-layer is described by two differential equations with non-linear coupling, producing a good fit to the experimental data. It is shown that growth of the thickness of the AB-layer determines by dependence of chemical reaction rate on reactants concentration. In special case the thickness of the AB-layer can grow linearly or parabolically depending on that which of processes (interaction or the diffusion) controls the growth. The thickness of AB-layer as function of time is obtained. The moment of time (transition point) at which the linear growth are changed by parabolic is found.
Abstract: Torrefaction is one of waste to energy (WTE) technologies developing in Taiwan recently, which can reduce the moisture and impuritiesand increase the energy density of biowaste effectively. To understand the torrefaction characteristics of different biowaste and the influences of different torrefaction conditions, four typical biowaste were selected to carry out the torrefaction experiments. The physical and chemical properties of different biowaste prior to and after torrefaction were analyzed and compared. Experimental results show that the contents of elemental carbon and caloric value of the four biowaste were significantly increased after torrefaction. The increase of combustible and caloric value in bamboo was the greatest among the four biowaste. The caloric value of bamboo can be increased from 1526 kcal/kg to 6104 kcal/kg after 300oC and 1 hour torrefaction. The caloric valueof torrefied bamboo was almost four times as the original. The increase of elemental carbon content in wood was the greatest (from 41.03% to 75.24%), and the next was bamboo (from 47.07% to 74.63%). The major parameters which affected the caloric value of torrefied biowaste followed the sequence of biowaste kinds, torrefaction time, and torrefaction temperature. The optimal torrefaction conditions of the experiments were bamboo torrefied at 300oC for 3 hours, and the corresponding caloric value of torrefied bamboo was 5953 kcal/kg. This caloric value is similar to that of brown coal or bituminous coal.
Abstract: Membrane distillation is an emerging technology which has been used to produce freshwater and purify different types of aqueous mixtures. Qatar is an arid country where almost 100% of its freshwater demand is supplied through the energy-intensive thermal desalination process. The country’s need for water has reached an all-time high which stipulates finding an alternative way to augment freshwater without adding any drastic affect to the environment. The objective of this paper was to investigate the potential of using the industrial low grade waste heat to produce freshwater using membrane distillation. The main part of this work was conducting a heat audit on selected Qatari chemical industries to estimate the amounts of freshwater produced if such industrial waste heat were to be recovered. By the end of this work, the main objective was met and the heat audit conducted on the Qatari chemical industries enabled us to estimate both the amounts of waste heat which can be potentially recovered in addition to the amounts of freshwater which can be produced if such waste heat were to be recovered.
By the end, the heat audit showed that around 605 Mega Watts of waste heat can be recovered from the studied Qatari chemical industries which resulted in a total daily production of 5078.7 cubic meter of freshwater.
This water can be used in a wide variety of applications such as human consumption or industry. The amount of produced freshwater may look small when compared to that produced through thermal desalination plants; however, one must bear in mind that this water comes from waste and can be used to supply water for small cities or remote areas which are not connected to the water grid. The idea of producing freshwater from the two widely-available wastes (thermal rejected brine and waste heat) seems promising as less environmental and economic impacts will be associated with freshwater production which may in the near future augment the conventional way of producing freshwater currently being thermal desalination. This work has shown that low grade waste heat in the chemical industries in Qatar and perhaps the rest of the world can contribute to additional production of freshwater using membrane distillation without significantly adding to the environmental impact.
Abstract: Anaerobic modeling is a useful tool to describe and
simulate the condition and behaviour of anaerobic treatment units for
better effluent quality and biogas generation. The present
investigation deals with the anaerobic treatment of brewery
wastewater with varying organic loads. The chemical oxygen demand
(COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) of the influent and effluent
of the bioreactor were determined at various retention times to
generate data for kinetic coefficients. The bio-kinetic coefficients in
the modified Stover–Kincannon kinetic and methane generation
models were determined to study the performance of anaerobic
digestion process. At steady-state, the determination of the kinetic
coefficient (K), the endogenous decay coefficient (Kd), the maximum
growth rate of microorganisms (μmax), the growth yield coefficient
(Y), ultimate methane yield (Bo), maximum utilization rate constant
Umax and the saturation constant (KB) in the model were calculated to
be 0.046 g/g COD, 0.083 (d¯¹), 0.117 (d-¹), 0.357 g/g, 0.516 (L
CH4/gCODadded), 18.51 (g/L/day) and 13.64 (g/L/day) respectively.
The outcome of this study will help in simulation of anaerobic model
to predict usable methane and good effluent quality during the
treatment of industrial wastewater. Thus, this will protect the
environment, conserve natural resources, saves time and reduce cost
incur by the industries for the discharge of untreated or partially
treated wastewater. It will also contribute to a sustainable long-term
clean development mechanism for the optimization of the methane
produced from anaerobic degradation of waste in a close system.
Abstract: The present study consisted of an applied test in meat
system to assess the effectiveness of three bio agents bacteriocinproducing
strains: Lm24: Lactobacillus sakei, Lm14and Lm25:
Pediococcus spp. Two tests were carried out: The ex situ test was
intended for three batches added with crude bacteriocin solutions at
12.48 AU/ml for Lm25 and 8.4 AU/ml for Lm14 and Lm24. However, the
in situ one consisted of four batches; three of them inoculated with
one bacteriocinogenic Lm25, Lm14, Lm24, respectively. The fourth one
was used in mixture: Lm14+m24 at approximately of 107 CFU/ml. The
two used tests were done in the presence of the pathogen
St. aureus ATCC 6538, as a test strain at 103 CFU/ml. Another batch
served as a positive or a negative control was used too. The
incubation was performed at 7°C. Total viable counts, staphylococci
and lactic acid bacteria, at the beginning and at selected times with
interval of three days were enumerated. Physico-chemical
determinations (except for in situ test): pH, dry mater, sugars, fat and
total protein, at the beginning and at end of the experiment, were
done, according to the international norms. Our results confirmed the
ex situ effectiveness. Furthermore, the batches affected negatively the
total microbial load over the incubation days, and showed a
significant regression in staphylococcal load at day seven, for Lm14,
Lm24, and Lm25 of 0.73, 2.11, and 2.4 log units. It should be noticed
that, at the last day of culture, staphylococcal load was nil for the
three batches. In the in situ test, the cultures displayed less inhibitory
attitude and recorded a decrease in staphylococcal load, for Lm14,
Lm24, Lm25, Lm14+m24 of 0.73, 0.20, 0.86, 0.032 log units. Therefore,
physicochemical analysis for Lm14, Lm24, Lm25, Lm14+m24 showed an
increase in pH from 5.50 to 5.77, 6.18, 5.96, 7.22, a decrease in dry
mater from 7.30% to 7.05%, 6.87%, 6.32%, 6.00%.This result
reflects the decrease in fat ranging from 1.53% to 1.49%, 1.07%,
0.99%, 0.87%; and total protein from 6.18% to 5.25%, 5.56%,
5.37%, 5.5%. This study suggests that the use of selected strains as
Lm25 could lead to the best results and would help in preserving and
extending the shelf life of lamb meat.
Abstract: The surface properties of many materials can be readily and predictably modified by the controlled deposition of thin layers containing appropriate functional groups and this research area is now a subject of widespread interest. The layer-by-layer (lbl) method involves depositing oppositely charged layers of polyelectrolytes onto the substrate material which are stabilized due to strong electrostatic forces between adjacent layers. This type of modification affords products that combine the properties of the original material with the superficial parameters of the new external layers. Through an appropriate selection of the deposited layers, the surface properties can be precisely controlled and readily adjusted in order to meet the requirements of the intended application. In the presented paper a variety of anionic (poly(acrylic acid)) and cationic (linear poly(ethylene imine), polymers were successfully deposited onto the polypropylene nonwoven using the lbl technique. The chemical structure of the surface before and after modification was confirmed by reflectance FTIR spectroscopy, volumetric analysis and selective dyeing tests. As a direct result of this work, new materials with greatly improved properties have been produced. For example, following a modification process significant changes in the electrostatic activity of a range of novel nanocomposite materials were observed. The deposition of polyelectrolyte nanolayers was found to strongly accelerate the loss of electrostatically generated charges and to increase considerably the thermal resistance properties of the modified fabric (the difference in T50% is over 20oC). From our results, a clear relationship between the type of polyelectrolyte layer deposited onto the flat fabric surface and the properties of the modified fabric was identified.
Abstract: The lignite-fired power plants in the Western Macedonia Lignite Center produce more than 8106 t of fly ash per year. Approximately 90% of this quantity is used for restoration-reclamation of exhausted open-cast lignite mines and slope stabilization of the overburden. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the environmental behavior of the mixture of waste rock and fly ash that is being used in the external deposition site of the South Field lignite mine. For this reason, a borehole was made within the site and 86 samples were taken and subjected to chemical analyses and leaching tests. The results showed very limited leaching of trace elements and heavy metals from this mixture. Moreover, when compared to the limit values set for waste acceptable in inert waste landfills, only few excesses were observed, indicating only minor risk for groundwater pollution. However, due to the complexity of both the leaching process and the contaminant pathway, more boreholes and analyses should be made in nearby locations and a systematic groundwater monitoring program should be implemented both downstream and within the external deposition site.
Abstract: 40L of hollow fiber membrane bioreactor with solids retention times (SRT) of 30, 15 and 4 days were setup for treating synthetic wastewater at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 12, 8 and 4 hours. The objectives of the study were to investigate the effects of SRT and HRT on membrane fouling. A comparative analysis was carried out for physiochemical quality parameters (turbidity, suspended solids, COD, NH3-N and PO43-). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy diffusive X-ray (EDX) analyzer and particle size distribution (PSD) were used to characterize the membrane fouling properties. The influence of SRT on the quality of effluent, activated sludge quality, and membrane fouling were also correlated. Lower membrane fouling and slower rise in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) were noticed at the longest SRT and HRT of 30d and 12h, respectively. Increasing SRT results in noticeable reduction of dissolved organic matters. The best removal efficiencies of COD, TSS, NH3-N and PO43- were 93%, 98%, 80% and 30% respectively. The high HRT with shorter SRT induced faster fouling rate. The main fouling resistance was cake layer. The most severe membrane fouling was observed at SRT and HRT of 4 and 12, respectively with thickness cake layer of 17mm as reflected by higher TMP, lower effluent removal and thick sludge cake layer.
Abstract: Vibration analysis of most critical equipment is considered as one of the most challenging activities in preventive maintenance. Utilities are heart of the process in big industrial plants like petrochemical zones. Vibration analysis methods and condition monitoring systems of these kinds of equipments are developed too much in recent years. On the other hand, there are too much operation factors like inlet and outlet pressures and temperatures that should be monitored. In this paper, some of the most effective concepts and techniques related to gas turbine vibration analysis are discussed. In addition, a gas turbine SIEMENS 162MW - V94.2 vibration case history related to Iran power industry in Fars province is explained. Vibration monitoring system and machinery technical specification are introduced. Besides, absolute and relative vibration trends, turbine and compressor orbits, Fast Fourier transform (FFT) in absolute vibrations, vibration modal analysis, turbine and compressor start up and shut down conditions, bode diagrams for relative vibrations, Nyquist diagrams and waterfall or three-dimensional FFT diagrams in startup and trip conditions are discussed with relative graphs. Furthermore, Split Resonance in gas turbines is discussed in details. Moreover, some updated vibration monitoring system, blade manufacturing technique and modern damping mechanism are discussed in this paper.
Abstract: Construction industry in Greece consumes annually
more than 25 million tons of natural aggregates originating mainly
from quarries. At the same time, more than 2 million tons of
construction and demolition waste are deposited every year, usually
without control, therefore increasing the environmental impact of this
sector. A potential alternative for saving natural resources and
minimize landfilling, could be the recycling and re-use of Concrete
and Demolition Waste (CDW) in concrete production. Moreover, in
order to conform to the European legislation, Greece is obliged to
recycle non-hazardous construction and demolition waste to a
minimum of 70% by 2020. In this paper characterization of recycled
materials - commercially and laboratory produced, coarse and fine,
Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) - has been performed. Namely,
X-Ray Fluorescence and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used
for chemical and mineralogical analysis respectively. Physical
properties such as particle density, water absorption, sand equivalent
and resistance to fragmentation were also determined. This study,
first time made in Greece, aims at outlining the differences between
RCA and natural aggregates and evaluating their possible influence
in concrete performance. Results indicate that RCA’s chemical
composition is enriched in Si, Al, and alkali oxides compared to
natural aggregates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses results
indicated the presence of calcite, quartz and minor peaks of mica and
feldspars. From all the evaluated physical properties of coarse RCA,
only water absorption and resistance to fragmentation seem to have a
direct influence on the properties of concrete. Low Sand Equivalent
and significantly high water absorption values indicate that fine
fractions of RCA cannot be used for concrete production unless
further processed. Chemical properties of RCA in terms of water
soluble ions are similar to those of natural aggregates. Four different
concrete mixtures were produced and examined, replacing natural
coarse aggregates with RCA by a ratio of 0%, 25%, 50% and 75%
respectively. Results indicate that concrete mixtures containing
recycled concrete aggregates have a minor deterioration of their
properties (3-9% lower compression strength at 28 days) compared to
conventional concrete containing the same cement quantity.
