Abstract: The quest for alternatefuels for a CI engine has
become all the more imperative considering its importance in the
economy of a nation and from the standpoint of preserving the environment. Reported in this paper are the combustion performance and P-θ characteristics of a CI engine operating on B20 biodiesel fuel derived from Jatropha oil.Itis observed that the twin effect of advancing the injection timing and increasing the injector opening pressure (IOP) up to 220 barhas resulted in minimum brake specific
energy consumption and higherpeak pressure. It is also observed that
the crank angle of occurrence of peak pressure progressestowards top
dead center (TDC) as the timing is advanced and IOP is increased.
Abstract: Automatic segmentation of skin lesions is the first step
towards development of a computer-aided diagnosis of melanoma.
Although numerous segmentation methods have been developed,
few studies have focused on determining the most discriminative
and effective color space for melanoma application. This paper
proposes a novel automatic segmentation algorithm using color space
analysis and clustering-based histogram thresholding, which is able to
determine the optimal color channel for segmentation of skin lesions.
To demonstrate the validity of the algorithm, it is tested on a set of 30
high resolution dermoscopy images and a comprehensive evaluation
of the results is provided, where borders manually drawn by four
dermatologists, are compared to automated borders detected by the
proposed algorithm. The evaluation is carried out by applying three
previously used metrics of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity and
a new metric of similarity. Through ROC analysis and ranking the
metrics, it is shown that the best results are obtained with the X and
XoYoR color channels which results in an accuracy of approximately
97%. The proposed method is also compared with two state-ofthe-
art skin lesion segmentation methods, which demonstrates the
effectiveness and superiority of the proposed segmentation method.
Abstract: The fuzzy set theory has been applied in many fields,
such as operations research, control theory, and management
sciences, etc. In particular, an application of this theory in decision
making problems is linear programming problems with fuzzy
numbers. In this study, we present a new method for solving fuzzy
number linear programming problems, by use of linear ranking
function. In fact, our method is similar to simplex method that was
used for solving linear programming problems in crisp environment
before.
Abstract: In this work, we derive two numerical schemes for
solving a class of nonlinear partial differential equations. The first
method is of second order accuracy in space and time directions, the
scheme is unconditionally stable using Von Neumann stability
analysis, the scheme produced a nonlinear block system where
Newton-s method is used to solve it. The second method is of fourth
order accuracy in space and second order in time. The method is
unconditionally stable and Newton's method is used to solve the
nonlinear block system obtained. The exact single soliton solution
and the conserved quantities are used to assess the accuracy and to
show the robustness of the schemes. The interaction of two solitary
waves for different parameters are also discussed.
Abstract: This paper investigates the activity of the
gastrocnemius (Gas) muscle in healthy subjects during salat (ruku-
position) and specific exercise [Unilateral Plantar Flexion Exercise
(UPFE)] using electromyography (EMG). Both lateral and medial
Gas muscles were assessed. A group of undergraduates aged between
19 to 25 years voluntarily participated in this study. The myoelectric
activity of the muscles were recorded and analyzed. The finding
indicated that there were contractions of the muscles during the salat
and exercise with almost same EMG-s level. From the result,
Wilcoxon-s Rank Sum test showed no significant difference between
ruku- and UPFE for both medial (p=0.082) and lateral (p=0.226) of
GAS muscles. Therefore, salat may be useful in strengthening
exercise and also in rehabilitation programs for lower limb activities.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel algorithm of stereo
correspondence with rank transform. In this algorithm we used the
genetic algorithm to achieve the accurate disparity map. Genetic
algorithms are efficient search methods based on principles of
population genetic, i.e. mating, chromosome crossover, gene
mutation, and natural selection. Finally morphology is employed to
remove the errors and discontinuities.
Abstract: MATCH project [1] entitle the development of an
automatic diagnosis system that aims to support treatment of colon
cancer diseases by discovering mutations that occurs to tumour
suppressor genes (TSGs) and contributes to the development of
cancerous tumours. The constitution of the system is based on a)
colon cancer clinical data and b) biological information that will be
derived by data mining techniques from genomic and proteomic
sources The core mining module will consist of the popular, well
tested hybrid feature extraction methods, and new combined
algorithms, designed especially for the project. Elements of rough
sets, evolutionary computing, cluster analysis, self-organization maps
and association rules will be used to discover the annotations
between genes, and their influence on tumours [2]-[11].
The methods used to process the data have to address their high
complexity, potential inconsistency and problems of dealing with the
missing values. They must integrate all the useful information
necessary to solve the expert's question. For this purpose, the system
has to learn from data, or be able to interactively specify by a domain
specialist, the part of the knowledge structure it needs to answer a
given query. The program should also take into account the
importance/rank of the particular parts of data it analyses, and adjusts
the used algorithms accordingly.
Abstract: A Comparison and evaluation of the different
condition monitoring (CM) techniques was applied experimentally
on RC e.g. Dynamic cylinder pressure and crankshaft Instantaneous
Angular Speed (IAS), for the detection and diagnosis of valve faults
in a two - stage reciprocating compressor for a programme of
condition monitoring which can successfully detect and diagnose a
fault in machine. Leakage in the valve plate was introduced
experimentally into a two-stage reciprocating compressor. The effect
of the faults on compressor performance was monitored and the
differences with the normal, healthy performance noted as a fault
signature been used for the detection and diagnosis of faults.
The paper concludes with what is considered to be a unique
approach to condition monitoring. First, each of the two most useful
techniques is used to produce a Truth Table which details the
circumstances in which each method can be used to detect and
diagnose a fault. The two Truth Tables are then combined into a
single Decision Table to provide a unique and reliable method of
detection and diagnosis of each of the individual faults introduced
into the compressor. This gives accurate diagnosis of compressor
faults.
Abstract: This paper presents a methodology for operational and
economic characteristics based evaluation and selection of a power
plant using Graph theoretic approach. A universal evaluation index
on the basis of Operational and economics characteristics of a plant is
proposed which evaluates and ranks the various types of power plants.
The index thus obtained from the pool of operational characteristics
of the power plant attributes Digraph. The Digraph is developed
considering Operational and economics attributes of the power plants
and their relative importance for their smooth operation, installation
and commissioning and prioritizing their selection. The sensitivity
analysis of the attributes towards the objective has also been carried
out in order to study the impact of attributes over the desired outcome
i.e. the universal operational-economics index of the power plant.
Abstract: The importance of hints in an intelligent tutoring system is well understood. The problems however related to their delivering are quite a few. In this paper we propose delivering of hints to be based on considering their usefulness. By this we mean that a hint is regarded as useful to a student if the student has succeeded to solve a problem after the hint was suggested to her/him. Methods from the theory of partial orderings are further applied facilitating an automated process of offering individualized advises on how to proceed in order to solve a particular problem.
Abstract: A theory for optimal filtering of infinite sets of random
signals is presented. There are several new distinctive features of the
proposed approach. First, a single optimal filter for processing any
signal from a given infinite signal set is provided. Second, the filter is
presented in the special form of a sum with p terms where each term
is represented as a combination of three operations. Each operation
is a special stage of the filtering aimed at facilitating the associated
numerical work. Third, an iterative scheme is implemented into the
filter structure to provide an improvement in the filter performance at
each step of the scheme. The final step of the scheme concerns signal
compression and decompression. This step is based on the solution of
a new rank-constrained matrix approximation problem. The solution
to the matrix problem is described in this paper. A rigorous error
analysis is given for the new filter.
Abstract: The main aim of the presented experiments is to
improve behaviour of sandwich structures under dynamic loading,
such as crash or explosion. Several cellular materials are widely used
as core of the sandwich structures and their properties influence
the response of the entire element under impact load. To optimize
their performance requires the characterisation of the core material
behaviour at high strain rates and identification of the underlying
mechanism. This work presents the study of high strain-rate
characteristics of a specific porous lightweight blast energy absorbing
foam using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique
adapted to perform tests on low strength materials. Two different
velocities, 15 and 30 m.s-1 were used to determine the strain
sensitivity of the material. Foams were designed using two types of
porous lightweight spherical raw materials with diameters of 30-
100 *m, combined with polymer matrix. Cylindrical specimens with
diameter of 15 mm and length of 7 mm were prepared and loaded
using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar apparatus to assess the relation
between the composition of the material and its shock wave
attenuation capacity.
Abstract: The purpose of the study reported here was designing Information Dissemination System (IDS) based E-learning in agricultural of Iran. A questionnaire was developed to designing Information Dissemination System. The questionnaire was distributed to 96 extension agents who work for Management of Extension and Farming System of Khuzestan province of Iran. Data collected were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Appropriate statistical procedures for description (frequencies, percent, means, and standard deviations) were used. In this study there was a significant relationship between the age , IT skill and knowledge, years of extension work, the extend of information seeking motivation, level of job satisfaction and level of education with use of information technology by extension agent. According to extension agents five factors were ranked respectively as five top essential items to designing Information Dissemination System (IDS) based E-learning in agricultural of Iran. These factors include: 1) Establish communication between farmers, coordinators (extension agents), agricultural experts, research centers, and community by information technology. 2) The communication between all should be mutual. 3) The information must be based farmers need. 4) Internet used as a facility to transfer the advanced agricultural information to the farming community. 5) Farmers can be illiterate and speak a local and they are not expected to use the system directly. Knowledge produced by the agricultural scientist must be transformed in to computer understandable presentation. To designing Information Dissemination System, electronic communication, in the agricultural society and rural areas must be developed. This communication must be mutual between all factors.
Abstract: A co-generation system in automobile can improve
thermal efficiency of vehicle in some degree. The waste heat from the
engine exhaust and coolant is still attractive energy source that reaches
around 60% of the total energy converted from fuel. To maximize the
effectiveness of heat exchangers for recovering the waste heat, it is
vital to select the most suitable working fluid for the system, not to
mention that it is important to find the optimum design for the heat
exchangers. The design of heat exchanger is out of scoop of this study;
rather, the main focus has been on the right selection of working fluid
for the co-generation system. Simulation study was carried out to find
the most suitable working fluid that can allow the system to achieve
the optimum efficiency in terms of the heat recovery rate and thermal
efficiency.
Abstract: In digital signal processing it is important to
approximate multi-dimensional data by the method called rank
reduction, in which we reduce the rank of multi-dimensional data from
higher to lower. For 2-dimennsional data, singular value
decomposition (SVD) is one of the most known rank reduction
techniques. Additional, outer product expansion expanded from SVD
was proposed and implemented for multi-dimensional data, which has
been widely applied to image processing and pattern recognition.
However, the multi-dimensional outer product expansion has behavior
of great computation complex and has not orthogonally between the
expansion terms. Therefore we have proposed an alterative method,
Third-order Orthogonal Tensor Product Expansion short for 3-OTPE.
3-OTPE uses the power method instead of nonlinear optimization
method for decreasing at computing time. At the same time the group
of B. D. Lathauwer proposed Higher-Order SVD (HOSVD) that is
also developed with SVD extensions for multi-dimensional data.
3-OTPE and HOSVD are similarly on the rank reduction of
multi-dimensional data. Using these two methods we can obtain
computation results respectively, some ones are the same while some
ones are slight different. In this paper, we compare 3-OTPE to
HOSVD in accuracy of calculation and computing time of resolution,
and clarify the difference between these two methods.
Abstract: Feature selection study is gaining importance due to its contribution to save classification cost in terms of time and computation load. In search of essential features, one of the methods to search the features is via the decision tree. Decision tree act as an intermediate feature space inducer in order to choose essential features. In decision tree-based feature selection, some studies used decision tree as a feature ranker with a direct threshold measure, while others remain the decision tree but utilized pruning condition that act as a threshold mechanism to choose features. This paper proposed threshold measure using Manhattan Hierarchical Cluster distance to be utilized in feature ranking in order to choose relevant features as part of the feature selection process. The result is promising, and this method can be improved in the future by including test cases of a higher number of attributes.
Abstract: Knowing consumers' preferences and perceptions of
the sensory evaluation of drink products are very significant to
manufacturers and retailers alike. With no appropriate sensory
analysis, there is a high risk of market disappointment. This paper
aims to rank the selected coffee products and also to determine the
best of quality attribute through sensory evaluation using fuzzy
decision making model. Three products of coffee drinks were used
for sensory evaluation. Data were collected from thirty judges at a
hypermarket in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. The judges were asked
to specify their sensory evaluation in linguistic terms of the quality
attributes of colour, smell, taste and mouth feel for each product and
also the weight of each quality attribute. Five fuzzy linguistic terms
represent the quality attributes were introduced prior analysing. The
judgment membership function and the weights were compared to
rank the products and also to determine the best quality attribute. The
product of Indoc was judged as the first in ranking and 'taste' as the
best quality attribute. These implicate the importance of sensory
evaluation in identifying consumers- preferences and also the
competency of fuzzy approach in decision making.
Abstract: Liquidity risk management ranks to key concepts
applied in finance. Liquidity is defined as a capacity to obtain
funding when needed, while liquidity risk means as a threat to this
capacity to generate cash at fair costs. In the paper we present
challenges of liquidity risk management resulting from the 2007-
2009 global financial upheaval. We see five main regulatory
liquidity risk management issues requiring revision in coming
years: liquidity measurement, intra-day and intra-group liquidity
management, contingency planning and liquidity buffers, liquidity
systems, controls and governance, and finally models testing the
viability of business liquidity models.
Abstract: Nowadays, the plant location selection has a critical
impact on the performance of numerous companies. In this paper, a
methodology is presented to solve this problem. The three decision
making methods, namely Delphi, AHP and improved VIKOR, are
hybridized in order to make the best use of information available
based on the decision makers or experts. In this respect, the aim of
using Delphi is to select the most influential criteria by a few decision
makers. The AHP is utilized to give weights of the selected criteria.
Finally, the improved VIKOR method is applied to rank alternatives.
At the end of paper, an application example demonstrates the
applicability of the proposed methodology.
Abstract: In this paper, a method for decision making in fuzzy environment is presented.A new subjective and objective integrated approach is introduced that used to assign weight attributes in fuzzy multiple attribute decision making (FMADM) problems and alternatives and fmally ranked by proposed method.
