Abstract: This study had two goals. First, it investigated marital
interaction variables as predictors of treatment outcome in panic
disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) in sixty-five couples with one
spouse suffering from PDA. Second, it analyzed the impact of PDA
improvement, following therapy, on marital interaction patterns of
both spouses. The partners were observed during a problem-solving
task, before and after treatment. Negative behaviors at the outset of
therapy, both in the PDA and the NPDA partners, predicted less
improvement at post-test. It also appears that improvement in some
PDA symptoms following therapy is linked to increase in the
dominant behavior of the NPDA spouse and to an improvement in
terms of his intrusiveness.
Abstract: Numerical studies on race car aerodynamics at wing
in ground effect have been carried out using a steady 3d, double
precision, pressure-based, and standard k-epsilon turbulence model.
Through various parametric analytical studies we have observed that
at a particular speed and ground clearance of the wings a favorable
negative lift was found high at a particular angle of attack for all the
physical models considered in this paper. The fact is that if the
ground clearance height to chord length (h/c) is too small, the
developing boundary layers from either side (the ground and the
lower surface of the wing) can interact, leading to an altered variation
of the aerodynamic characteristics at wing in ground effect. Therefore
a suitable ground clearance must be predicted throughout the racing
for a better performance of the race car, which obviously depends
upon the coupled effects of the topography, wing orientation with
respect to the ground, the incoming flow features and/or the race car
speed. We have concluded that for the design of high performance
and high speed race cars the adjustable wings capable to alter the
ground clearance and the angles of attack is the best design option for
any race car for racing safely with variable speeds.
Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of spreading
sequence and receiver code synchronization techniques for satellite
based CDMA communications systems. The performance of CDMA
system depends on the autocorrelation and cross-correlation
properties of the used spreading sequences. In this paper we propose
the uses of chaotic Lu system to generate binary sequences for
spreading codes in a direct sequence spread CDMA system. To
minimize multiple access interference (MAI) we propose the use of
genetic algorithm for optimum selection of chaotic spreading
sequences. To solve the problem of transmitter-receiver
synchronization, we use the passivity controls. The concept of
semipassivity is defined to find simple conditions which ensure
boundedness of the solutions of coupled Lu systems. Numerical
results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed
approach.
Abstract: In this paper we have numerically analyzed terahertzrange
wavelength conversion using nondegenerate four wave mixing
(NDFWM) in a SOA integrated DFB laser (experiments reported
both in MIT electronics and Fujitsu research laboratories). For
analyzing semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), we use finitedifference
beam propagation method (FDBPM) based on modified
nonlinear SchrÖdinger equation and for distributed feedback (DFB)
laser we use coupled wave approach. We investigated wavelength
conversion up to 4THz probe-pump detuning with conversion
efficiency -5dB in 1THz probe-pump detuning for a SOA integrated
quantum-well
Abstract: The paper presents a space-vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) inverter feeding a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The SVPWM inverter enables to feed the motor with a higher voltage with low harmonic distortions than the conventional sinusoidal PWM inverter. The control strategy of the inverter is the voltage / frequency control method, which is based on the space-vector modulation technique. The proposed PMSM drive system involving the field-oriented control scheme not only decouples the torque and flux which provides faster response but also makes the control task easy. The performance of the proposed drive is simulated. The advantages of the proposed drive are confirmed by the simulation results.
Abstract: Human heart valves diseased by congenital heart
defects, rheumatic fever, bacterial infection, cancer may cause stenosis
or insufficiency in the valves. Treatment may be with medication but
often involves valve repair or replacement (insertion of an artificial
heart valve). Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHVs) are widely
implanted to replace the diseased heart valves, but still suffer from
complications such as hemolysis, platelet activation, tissue
overgrowth and device failure. These complications are closely related
to both flow characteristics through the valves and leaflet dynamics. In
this study, the physiological flow interacting with the moving leaflets
in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV) is simulated with a
strongly coupled implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method
which is newly organized based on the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian
(ALE) approach and the dynamic mesh method (remeshing) of
FLUENT. The simulated results are in good agreement with previous
experimental studies. This study shows the applicability of the present
FSI model to the complicated physics interacting between fluid flow
and moving boundary.
Abstract: Statistical analysis of electrophysiological recordings
obtained under, e.g. tactile, stimulation frequently suggests participation
in the network dynamics of experimentally unobserved “hidden"
neurons. Such interneurons making synapses to experimentally
recorded neurons may strongly alter their dynamical responses to
the stimuli. We propose a mathematical method that formalizes this
possibility and provides an algorithm for inferring on the presence
and dynamics of hidden neurons based on fitting of the experimental
data to spike trains generated by the network model. The model
makes use of Integrate and Fire neurons “chemically" coupled
through exponentially decaying synaptic currents. We test the method
on simulated data and also provide an example of its application to
the experimental recording from the Dorsal Column Nuclei neurons
of the rat under tactile stimulation of a hind limb.
Abstract: A nonlinear model of two-beam free-electron laser
(FEL) in the absence of slippage is presented. The two beams are
assumed to be cold with different energies and the fundamental
resonance of the higher energy beam is at the third harmonic of lower
energy beam. By using Maxwell-s equations and full Lorentz force
equations of motion for the electron beams, coupled differential
equations are derived and solved numerically by the fourth order
Runge–Kutta method. In this method a considerable growth of third
harmonic electromagnetic field in the XUV and X-ray regions is
predicted.
Abstract: The dynamics of the Autonomous Underwater
Vehicles (AUVs) are highly nonlinear and time varying and the hydrodynamic coefficients of vehicles are difficult to estimate
accurately because of the variations of these coefficients with
different navigation conditions and external disturbances. This study presents the on-line system identification of AUV dynamics to obtain
the coupled nonlinear dynamic model of AUV as a black box. This black box has an input-output relationship based upon on-line
adaptive fuzzy model and adaptive neural fuzzy network (ANFN)
model techniques to overcome the uncertain external disturbance and
the difficulties of modelling the hydrodynamic forces of the AUVs instead of using the mathematical model with hydrodynamic parameters estimation. The models- parameters are adapted according
to the back propagation algorithm based upon the error between the
identified model and the actual output of the plant. The proposed
ANFN model adopts a functional link neural network (FLNN) as the
consequent part of the fuzzy rules. Thus, the consequent part of the
ANFN model is a nonlinear combination of input variables. Fuzzy
control system is applied to guide and control the AUV using both
adaptive models and mathematical model. Simulation results show
the superiority of the proposed adaptive neural fuzzy network
(ANFN) model in tracking of the behavior of the AUV accurately
even in the presence of noise and disturbance.
Abstract: Propagation of solitons in single-mode birefringent fibers is considered under the presence of third-order dispersion (TOD). The behavior of two neighboring solitons and their interaction is investigated under the presence of third-order dispersion with different group velocity dispersion (GVD) parameters. It is found that third-order dispersion makes the resultant soliton to deviate from its ideal position and increases the interaction between adjacent soliton pulses. It is also observed that this deviation due to third-order dispersion is considerably small when the optical pulse propagates at wavelengths relatively far from the zerodispersion. Modified coupled nonlinear Schrödinger-s equations (CNLSE) representing the propagation of optical pulse in single mode fiber with TOD are solved using split-step Fourier algorithm. The results presented in this paper reveal that the third-order dispersion can substantially increase the interaction between the solitons, but large group velocity dispersion reduces the interaction between neighboring solitons.
Abstract: The possibility of intrinsic electromagnetic fields
within living cells and their resonant self-interaction and interaction
with ambient electromagnetic fields is suggested on the basis of a
theoretical and experimental study. It is reported that intrinsic
electromagnetic fields are produced in the form of radio-frequency
and infra-red photons within atoms (which may be coupled or
uncoupled) in cellular structures, such as the cell cytoskeleton and
plasma membrane. A model is presented for the interaction of these
photons among themselves or with atoms under a dipole-dipole
coupling, induced by single-photon or two-photon processes. This
resonance is manifested by conspicuous field amplification and it is
argued that it is possible for these resonant photons to undergo
tunnelling in the form of evanescent waves to a short range (of a few
nanometers to micrometres). This effect, suggested as a resonant
photon tunnelling mechanism in this report, may enable these fields
to act as intracellular signal communication devices and as bridges
between macromolecules or cellular structures in the cell
cytoskeleton, organelles or membrane. A brief overview of an
experimental technique and a review of some preliminary results are
presented, in the detection of these fields produced in living cell
membranes under physiological conditions.
Abstract: Compression algorithms reduce the redundancy in
data representation to decrease the storage required for that data.
Lossless compression researchers have developed highly
sophisticated approaches, such as Huffman encoding, arithmetic
encoding, the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) family, Dynamic Markov
Compression (DMC), Prediction by Partial Matching (PPM), and
Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) based algorithms.
Decompression is also required to retrieve the original data by
lossless means. A compression scheme for text files coupled with
the principle of dynamic decompression, which decompresses only
the section of the compressed text file required by the user instead of
decompressing the entire text file. Dynamic decompressed files offer
better disk space utilization due to higher compression ratios
compared to most of the currently available text file formats.
Abstract: This paper introduces a low cost INS/GPS algorithm for
land vehicle navigation application. The data fusion process is done
with an extended Kalman filter in cascade configuration mode. In
order to perform numerical simulations, MATLAB software has been
developed. Loosely coupled configuration is considered. The results
obtained in this work demonstrate that a low-cost INS/GPS navigation
system is partially capable of meeting the performance requirements
for land vehicle navigation. The relative effectiveness of the kalman
filter implementation in integrated GPS/INS navigation algorithm is
highlighted. The paper also provides experimental results; field test
using a car is carried out.
Abstract: A generalized Dirichlet to Neumann map is
one of the main aspects characterizing a recently introduced
method for analyzing linear elliptic PDEs, through which it
became possible to couple known and unknown components
of the solution on the boundary of the domain without
solving on its interior. For its numerical solution, a well conditioned
quadratically convergent sine-Collocation method
was developed, which yielded a linear system of equations
with the diagonal blocks of its associated coefficient matrix
being point diagonal. This structural property, among others,
initiated interest for the employment of iterative methods for
its solution. In this work we present a conclusive numerical
study for the behavior of classical (Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel)
and Krylov subspace (GMRES and Bi-CGSTAB) iterative
methods when they are applied for the solution of the Dirichlet
to Neumann map associated with the Laplace-s equation
on regular polygons with the same boundary conditions on
all edges.
Abstract: The motion of a sphere moving along the axis of a
rotating viscous fluid is studied at high Reynolds numbers and
moderate values of Taylor number. The Higher Order Compact
Scheme is used to solve the governing Navier-Stokes equations. The
equations are written in the form of Stream function, Vorticity
function and angular velocity which are highly non-linear, coupled
and elliptic partial differential equations. The flow is governed by
two parameters Reynolds number (Re) and Taylor number (T). For
very low values of Re and T, the results agree with the available
experimental and theoretical results in the literature. The results are
obtained at higher values of Re and moderate values of T and
compared with the experimental results. The results are fourth order
accurate.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce a parametric
distribution model in fatigue life reliability analysis dealing with
variation in material properties. Service loads in terms of responsetime
history signal of Belgian pave were replicated on a multi-axial
spindle coupled road simulator and stress-life method was used to
estimate the fatigue life of automotive stub axle. A PSN curve was
obtained by monotonic tension test and two-parameter Weibull
distribution function was used to acquire the mean life of the
component. A Pearson system was developed to evaluate the fatigue
life reliability by considering stress range intercept and slope of the
PSN curve as random variables. Considering normal distribution of
fatigue strength, it is found that the fatigue life of the stub axle to
have the highest reliability between 10000 – 15000 cycles. Taking
into account the variation of material properties associated with the
size effect, machining and manufacturing conditions, the method
described in this study can be effectively applied in determination of
probability of failure of mass-produced parts.
Abstract: The paper presents an optimization study based on
genetic algorithms (GA-s) for a radio-frequency applicator used in
heating dielectric band products. The weakly coupled electro-thermal
problem is analyzed using 2D-FEM. The design variables in the
optimization process are: the voltage of a supplementary “guard"
electrode and six geometric parameters of the applicator. Two
objective functions are used: temperature uniformity and total active
power absorbed by the dielectric. Both mono-objective and multiobjective
formulations are implemented in GA optimization.
Abstract: A fully implicit finite-difference method has been proposed for the numerical solutions of one dimensional coupled nonlinear Burgers’ equations on the uniform mesh points. The method forms a system of nonlinear difference equations which is to be solved at each iteration. Newton’s iterative method has been implemented to solve this nonlinear assembled system of equations. The linear system has been solved by Gauss elimination method with partial pivoting algorithm at each iteration of Newton’s method. Three test examples have been carried out to illustrate the accuracy of the method. Computed solutions obtained by proposed scheme have been compared with analytical solutions and those already available in the literature by finding L2 and L∞ errors.
Abstract: A numerical method is proposed to calculate damping
properties for sound-proof structures involving elastic body,
viscoelastic body, and porous media. For elastic and viscoelastic body
displacement is modeled using conventional finite elements including
complex modulus of elasticity. Both effective density and bulk
modulus have complex quantities to represent damped sound fields in
the porous media. Particle displacement in the porous media is
discretised using finite element method. Displacement vectors as
common unknown variables are solved under coupled condition
between elastic body, viscoelastic body and porous media. Further,
explicit expressions of modal loss factor for the mixed structures are
derived using asymptotic method. Eigenvalue analysis and frequency
responded were calculated for automotive test panel laminated
viscoelastic and porous structures using this technique, the results
almost agreed with the experimental results.
Abstract: The ability to predict an accurate temperature
distribution requires the knowledge of the losses, the thermal
characteristics of the materials, and the cooling conditions, all of
which are very difficult to quantify. In this paper, the impact of the
effects of iron and copper losses are investigated separately and
their effects on the heating in various points of the stator of an
induction motor, is highlighted by using two simple tests. In addition,
the effect of a defect, such as an open circuit in a phase of the stator,
on the heating is also obtained by a no-load test.
The squirrel cage induction motor is rated at 2.2 kW; 380 V; 5.2
A; Δ connected; 50 Hz; 1420 rpm and the class of insulation F, has
been thermally tested under several load conditions. Several
thermocouples were placed in strategic points of the stator.
