Abstract: Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in men and is a major cause of mortality in the most of countries. In many diagnostic and treatment procedures for prostate disease accurate detection of prostate boundaries in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images is required. This is a challenging and difficult task due to weak prostate boundaries, speckle noise and the short range of gray levels. In this paper a novel method for automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images is presented. This method involves preprocessing (edge preserving noise reduction and smoothing) and prostate segmentation. The speckle reduction has been achieved by using stick filter and top-hat transform has been implemented for smoothing. A feed forward neural network and local binary pattern together have been use to find a point inside prostate object. Finally the boundary of prostate is extracted by the inside point and an active contour algorithm. A numbers of experiments are conducted to validate this method and results showed that this new algorithm extracted the prostate boundary with MSE less than 4.6% relative to boundary provided manually by physicians.
Abstract: The peculiarities of the nanoscale structure-phase
states formed after electroexplosive carburizing and subsequent
electron-beam treatment of technically pure titanium surface in different regimes are established by methods of transmission electron
diffraction microscopy and physical mechanisms are discussed. Electroexplosive carburizing leads to surface layer formation
(40 m thickness) with increased (in 3.5 times) microhardness. It consists of β-titanium, graphite (monocrystals 100-150 nm,
polycrystals 5-10 nm, amorphous particles 3-5nm), TiC (5-10 nm), β-Ti02 (2-20nm). After electron-beam treatment additionally increasing the microhardness the surface layer consists of TiC.
Abstract: Repetitive systems stand for a kind of systems that
perform a simple task on a fixed pattern repetitively, which are
widely spread in industrial fields. Hence, many researchers have been
interested in those systems, especially in the field of iterative learning
control (ILC). In this paper, we propose a finite-horizon tracking
control scheme for linear time-varying repetitive systems with uncertain
initial conditions. The scheme is derived both analytically
and numerically for state-feedback systems and only numerically for
output-feedback systems. Then, it is extended to stable systems with
input constraints. All numerical schemes are developed in the forms
of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A distinguished feature of the
proposed scheme from the existing iterative learning control is that
the scheme guarantees the tracking performance exactly even under
uncertain initial conditions. The simulation results demonstrate the
good performance of the proposed scheme.
Abstract: In this work, the natural convection in a concentric
annulus between a cold outer inclined square enclosure and heated
inner circular cylinder is simulated for two-dimensional steady
state. The Boussinesq approximation was applied to model the
buoyancy-driven effect and the governing equations were solved
using the time marching approach staggered by body fitted
coordinates. The coordinate transformation from the physical
domain to the computational domain is set up by an analytical
expression. Numerical results for Rayleigh numbers 103 , 104 , 105
and 106, aspect ratios 1.5 , 3.0 and 4.5 for seven different
inclination angles for the outer square enclosure 0o , -30o
, -45o
,
-60o , -90o , -135o , -180o are presented as well. The computed flow
and temperature fields were demonstrated in the form of
streamlines, isotherms and Nusselt numbers variation. It is found
that both the aspect ratio and the Rayleigh number are critical to the
patterns of flow and thermal fields. At all Rayleigh numbers angle
of inclination has nominal effect on heat transfer.
Abstract: The paper deals with an application of quantitative analysis – the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method to performance evaluation of the European Union Member States, in the reference years 2000 and 2011. The main aim of the paper is to measure efficiency changes over the reference years and to analyze a level of productivity in individual countries based on DEA method and to classify the EU Member States to homogeneous units (clusters) according to efficiency results. The theoretical part is devoted to the fundamental basis of performance theory and the methodology of DEA. The empirical part is aimed at measuring degree of productivity and level of efficiency changes of evaluated countries by basic DEA model – CCR CRS model, and specialized DEA approach – the Malmquist Index measuring the change of technical efficiency and the movement of production possibility frontier. Here, DEA method becomes a suitable tool for setting a competitive/uncompetitive position of each country because there is not only one factor evaluated, but a set of different factors that determine the degree of economic development.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a single sample path based
algorithm with state aggregation to optimize the average rewards of
singularly perturbed Markov reward processes (SPMRPs) with a
large scale state spaces. It is assumed that such a reward process
depend on a set of parameters. Differing from the other kinds of
Markov chain, SPMRPs have their own hierarchical structure. Based
on this special structure, our algorithm can alleviate the load in the
optimization for performance. Moreover, our method can be applied
on line because of its evolution with the sample path simulated.
Compared with the original algorithm applied on these problems of
general MRPs, a new gradient formula for average reward
performance metric in SPMRPs is brought in, which will be proved
in Appendix, and then based on these gradients, the schedule of the
iteration algorithm is presented, which is based on a single sample
path, and eventually a special case in which parameters only
dominate the disturbance matrices will be analyzed, and a precise
comparison with be displayed between our algorithm with the old
ones which is aim to solve these problems in general Markov reward
processes. When applied in SPMRPs, our method will approach a fast
pace in these cases. Furthermore, to illustrate the practical value of
SPMRPs, a simple example in multiple programming in computer
systems will be listed and simulated. Corresponding to some practical
model, physical meanings of SPMRPs in networks of queues will be
clarified.
Abstract: This paper aims at presenting the biotechnology used
to obtain collagen-based gels from shark (Squalus acanthias) and brill
skin, marine fish growing in the Black Sea. Due to the structure of its
micro-fibres, collagen can be considered a nanomaterial; in order to
use collagen-based matrixes as biomaterial, rheological studies must
be performed first, to state whether they are stable or not. For the
triple-helix structure to remain stable within these gels at room or
human body temperature, they must be stabilized by reticulation.
Abstract: Plasmodium vivax malaria differs from P. falciparum malaria in that a person suffering from P. vivax infection can suffer relapses of the disease. This is due the parasite being able to remain dormant in the liver of the patients where it is able to re-infect the patient after a passage of time. During this stage, the patient is classified as being in the dormant class. The model to describe the transmission of P. vivax malaria consists of a human population divided into four classes, the susceptible, the infected, the dormant and the recovered. The effect of a time delay on the transmission of this disease is studied. The time delay is the period in which the P. vivax parasite develops inside the mosquito (vector) before the vector becomes infectious (i.e., pass on the infection). We analyze our model by using standard dynamic modeling method. Two stable equilibrium states, a disease free state E0 and an endemic state E1, are found to be possible. It is found that the E0 state is stable when a newly defined basic reproduction number G is less than one. If G is greater than one the endemic state E1 is stable. The conditions for the endemic equilibrium state E1 to be a stable spiral node are established. For realistic values of the parameters in the model, it is found that solutions in phase space are trajectories spiraling into the endemic state. It is shown that the limit cycle and chaotic behaviors can only be achieved with unrealistic parameter values.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the current
state of corporate social responsibility statements on corporate
websites of Malaysian and Singaporean corporations and analyze
how the CSR statements contribute in building a unique corporate
identity of corporations. Content analysis is employed to examine the
websites of Malaysian and Singaporean consumer corporations. It is
believed that generally most companies tend to publish and
communicate their CSR statements visibly to general stakeholders.
However, there is a significantly different outcome of the articulation
of CSR on practices on websites between Malaysian and Singaporean
consumer corporations. A number of Singaporean organizations were
found less concerned with CSR practices as compared to Malaysian
organizations. The findings indicate a need for corporations in
Malaysia and Singapore to orchestrate their core competence of CSR
activities in order to develop a unique corporate identity in a global
business environment.
Abstract: A bond graph model of a hydroelectric plant is
proposed. In order to analyze the system some structural properties
of a bond graph are used. The structural controllability of
the hydroelctric plant is described. Also, the steady state of the
state variables applying the bond graph in a derivative causality
assignment is obtained. Finally, simulation results of the system
are shown.
Abstract: A new digital transceiver circuit for asynchronous frame detection is proposed where both the transmitter and receiver contain all digital components, thereby avoiding possible use of conventional devices like monostable multivibrators with unstable external components such as resistances and capacitances. The proposed receiver circuit, in particular, uses a combinational logic block yielding an output which changes its state as soon as the start bit of a new frame is detected. This, in turn, helps in generating an efficient receiver sampling clock. A data latching circuit is also used in the receiver to latch the recovered data bits in any new frame. The proposed receiver structure is also extended from 4- bit information to any general n data bits within a frame with a common expression for the output of the combinational logic block. Performance of the proposed hardware design is evaluated in terms of time delay, reliability and robustness in comparison with the standard schemes using monostable multivibrators. It is observed from hardware implementation that the proposed circuit achieves almost 33 percent speed up over any conventional circuit.
Abstract: The present paper proposes high performance nonlinear
force controllers for a servopneumatic real-time fatigue test
machine. A CompactRIO® controller was used, being fully
programmed using LabVIEW language. Fuzzy logic control
algorithms were evaluated to tune the integral and derivative
components in the development of hybrid controllers, namely a FLC
P and a hybrid FLC PID real-time-based controllers. Their
behaviours were described by using state diagrams. The main
contribution is to ensure a smooth transition between control states,
avoiding discrete transitions in controller outputs. Steady-state errors
lower than 1.5 N were reached, without retuning the controllers.
Good results were also obtained for sinusoidal tracking tasks from
1/¤Ç to 8/¤Ç Hz.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a chaotic cipher system consisting of Improved Volterra Filters and the mapping that is created from the actual voice by using Radial Basis Function Network. In order to achieve a practical system, the system supposes to use the digital communication line, such as the Internet, to maintain the parameter matching between the transmitter and receiver sides. Therefore, in order to withstand the attack from outside, it is necessary that complicate the internal state and improve the sensitivity coefficient. In this paper, we validate the robustness of proposed method from three perspectives of "Chaotic properties", "Randomness", "Coefficient sensitivity".
Abstract: For the last decade, statistics show traumatic brain
injury (TBI) is a growing concern in our legal system. In an effort to
obtain data regarding the influence of neuropsychological expert
witness testimony in a criminal case, this study tested three
hypotheses. H1: The majority of jurors will vote not guilty, due to
mild head injury. H2: The jurors will give more credence to the
testimony of the neuropsychologist rather than the psychiatrist. H3:
The jurors will be more lenient in their sentencing, given the
testimony of the neuropsychologist-s testimony. The criterion for
inclusion in the study as a participant is identical to those used for
inclusion in the eligibility for jury duty in the United States. A chisquared
test was performed to analyze the data for the three
hypotheses. The results supported all of the hypotheses; however
statistical significance was seen in H1 and H2 only.
Abstract: In the paper, the results of sensitivity analysis of the influence of initial imperfections on the web stress state of a thinwalled girder are presented. The results of the study corroborate a very good and effective agreement of experiments with theory. Most input random quantities were found experimentally. The change of sensitivity coefficients in dependence on working load value is analysed. The stress was analysed by means of a geometrically and materially non-linear solution by applying the program ANSYS. This research study offers important background for theoretical studies of stability problems, post-critical effects and limit states of thin-walled steel structures.
Abstract: In this study we tried to replicate the unconscious
thought advantage (UTA), which states that complex decisions are
better handled by unconscious thinking. We designed an experiment
in e-prime using similar material as the original study (choosing
between four different apartments, each described by 12 attributes).
A total of 73 participants (52 women (71.2%); 18 to 62 age:
M=24.63; SD=8.7) took part in the experiment. We did not replicate
the results suggested by UTT. However, from the present study we
cannot conclude whether this was the case of flaws in the theory or
flaws in our experiment and we discuss several ways in which the
issue of UTA could be examined further.
Abstract: Time full of changes which is associated with globalization, tougher competition, changes in the structures of markets and economic downturn, that all force companies to think about their competitive advantages. These changes can bring the company a competitive advantage and that can help improve competitive position in the market. Policy of the European Union is focused on the fast growing innovative companies which quickly respond to market demands and consequently increase its competitiveness. Abstract: The most Malaria cases are occur along Thai-Mynmar border. Mathematical model for the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria in a mixed population of Thais and migrant Burmese living along the Thai-Myanmar Border is studied. The population is separated into two groups, Thai and Burmese. Each population is divided into susceptible, infected, dormant and recovered subclasses. The loss of immunity by individuals in the infected class causes them to move back into the susceptible class. The person who is infected with Plasmodium vivax and is a member of the dormant class can relapse back into the infected class. A standard dynamical method is used to analyze the behaviors of the model. Two stable equilibrium states, a disease-free state and an epidemic state, are found to be possible in each population. A disease-free equilibrium state in the Thai population occurs when there are no infected Burmese entering the community. When infected Burmese enter the Thai community, an epidemic state can occur. It is found that the disease-free state is stable when the threshold number is less than one. The epidemic state is stable when a second threshold number is greater than one. Numerical simulations are used to confirm the results of our model.
