Abstract: In the operation of power transformers of 110 kV/MV from substations, these are traveled by fault current resulting from MV line damage. Defect electrical contacts are heated when they are travelled from fault currents. In the case of high temperatures when 135 °C is reached, the electrical insulating oil in the vicinity of the electrical faults comes into contact with these contacts releases gases, and activates the electrical protection. To avoid auto-flammability of electro-insulating oil, we designed a security system thermal of electrical contact defects by pouring fire-resistant polyurethane foam, mastic or mortar fire inside a cardboard electro-insulating cylinder. From practical experience, in the exploitation of power transformers of 110 kV/MT in oil electro-insulating were recorded some passing disconnecting commanded by the gas protection at internal defects. In normal operation and in the optimal load, nominal currents do not require thermal secure contacts inside electrical transformers, contacts are made at the fabrication according to the projects or to repair by solder. In the case of external short circuits close to the substation, the contacts inside electrical transformers, even if they are well made in sizes of Rcontact = 10‑6 Ω, are subjected to short-circuit currents of the order of 10 kA-20 kA which lead to the dissipation of some significant second-order electric powers, 100 W-400 W, on contact. At some internal or external factors which action on electrical contacts, including electrodynamic efforts at short-circuits, these factors could be degraded over time to values in the range of 10-4 Ω to 10-5 Ω and if the action time of protection is great, on the order of seconds, power dissipation on electrical contacts achieve high values of 1,0 kW to 40,0 kW. This power leads to strong local heating, hundreds of degrees Celsius and can initiate self-ignition and burning oil in the vicinity of electro-insulating contacts with action the gas relay. Degradation of electrical contacts inside power transformers may not be limited for the duration of their operation. In order to avoid oil burn with gas release near electrical contacts, at short-circuit currents 10 kA-20 kA, we have outlined the following solutions: covering electrical contacts in fireproof materials that would avoid direct burn oil at short circuit and transmission of heat from electrical contact along the conductors with heat dissipation gradually over time, in a large volume of cooling. Flame retardant materials are: polyurethane foam, mastic, cement (concrete). In the normal condition of operation of transformer, insulating of conductors coils is with paper and insulating oil. Ignition points of its two components respectively are approximated: 135 °C heat for oil and 200 0C for paper. In the case of a faulty electrical contact, about 10-3 Ω, at short-circuit; the temperature can reach for a short time, a value of 300 °C-400 °C, which ignite the paper and also the oil. By burning oil, there are local gases that disconnect the power transformer. Securing thermal electrical contacts inside the transformer, in cardboard tube with polyurethane foams, mastik or cement, ensures avoiding gas release and also gas protection working.
Abstract: Accurate prediction of NOx emission is a continuous challenge in the field of diesel engine-out emission modeling. Performing experiments for each conditions and scenario cost significant amount of money and man hours, therefore model-based development strategy has been implemented in order to solve that issue. NOx formation is highly dependent on the burn gas temperature and the O2 concentration inside the cylinder. The current empirical models are developed by calibrating the parameters representing the engine operating conditions with respect to the measured NOx. This makes the prediction of purely empirical models limited to the region where it has been calibrated. An alternative solution to that is presented in this paper, which focus on the utilization of in-cylinder combustion parameters to form a predictive semi-empirical NOx model. The result of this work is shown by developing a fast and predictive NOx model by using the physical parameters and empirical correlation. The model is developed based on the steady state data collected at entire operating region of the engine and the predictive combustion model, which is developed in Gamma Technology (GT)-Power by using Direct Injected (DI)-Pulse combustion object. In this approach, temperature in both burned and unburnt zone is considered during the combustion period i.e. from Intake Valve Closing (IVC) to Exhaust Valve Opening (EVO). Also, the oxygen concentration consumed in burnt zone and trapped fuel mass is also considered while developing the reported model. Several statistical methods are used to construct the model, including individual machine learning methods and ensemble machine learning methods. A detailed validation of the model on multiple diesel engines is reported in this work. Substantial numbers of cases are tested for different engine configurations over a large span of speed and load points. Different sweeps of operating conditions such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), injection timing and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) are also considered for the validation. Model shows a very good predictability and robustness at both sea level and altitude condition with different ambient conditions. The various advantages such as high accuracy and robustness at different operating conditions, low computational time and lower number of data points requires for the calibration establishes the platform where the model-based approach can be used for the engine calibration and development process. Moreover, the focus of this work is towards establishing a framework for the future model development for other various targets such as soot, Combustion Noise Level (CNL), NO2/NOx ratio etc.
Abstract: A numerical investigation of unsteady mixed convection heat transfer in a 3D moving top wall enclosure, which has a central rotating cylinder and uses either artificial roughness on the bottom hot plate or smooth bottom hot plate to study the heat transfer enhancement, is completed for fixed circular cylinder, and anticlockwise and clockwise rotational speeds, -1 ≤ Ω ≤ 1, at Reynolds number of 5000. The top lid-driven wall was cooled, while the other remaining walls that completed obstructed cubic were kept insulated and motionless. A standard k-ε model of Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) method is involved to deal with turbulent flow. It has been clearly noted that artificial roughness can strongly control the thermal fields and fluid flow patterns. Ultimately, the heat transfer rate has been dramatically increased by involving artificial roughness on the heated bottom wall in the presence of rotating cylinder.
Abstract: Non-Newtonian fluid properties can change the flow
behaviour significantly, its prediction is more difficult when thermal
effects come into play. Hence, the focal point of this work is the
wake flow behind a heated circular cylinder in the laminar vortex
shedding regime for thermo-viscous shear thinning fluids. In the case
of isothermal flows of Newtonian fluids the vortex shedding regime
is characterised by a distinct Reynolds number and an associated
Strouhal number. In the case of thermo-viscous shear thinning
fluids the flow regime can significantly change in dependence of
the temperature of the viscous wall of the cylinder. The Reynolds
number alters locally and, consequentially, the Strouhal number
globally. In the present CFD study the temperature dependence of
the Reynolds and Strouhal number is investigated for the flow of a
Carreau fluid around a heated cylinder. The temperature dependence
of the fluid viscosity has been modelled by applying the standard
Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation. In the present simulation
campaign thermal boundary conditions have been varied over a
wide range in order to derive a relation between dimensionless heat
transfer, Reynolds and Strouhal number. Together with the shear
thinning due to the high shear rates close to the cylinder wall
this leads to a significant decrease of viscosity of three orders of
magnitude in the nearfield of the cylinder and a reduction of two
orders of magnitude in the wake field. Yet the shear thinning effect
is able to change the flow topology: a complex K´arm´an vortex street
occurs, also revealing distinct characteristic frequencies associated
with the dominant and sub-dominant vortices. Heating up the cylinder
wall leads to a delayed flow separation and narrower wake flow,
giving lesser space for the sequence of counter-rotating vortices. This
spatial limitation does not only reduce the amplitude of the oscillating
wake flow it also shifts the dominant frequency to higher frequencies,
furthermore it damps higher harmonics. Eventually the locally heated
wake flow smears out. Eventually, the CFD simulation results of the
systematically varied thermal flow parameter study have been used
to describe a relation for the main characteristic order parameters.
Abstract: The objective of this research was to apply metakaolin from northeast of Thailand as a binder in the casting process of rice polishing cylinder in replacement of the imported calcined magnesite cement and to reduce the production cost of the cylinder. Metakaolin was obtained from three different regions (Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, and Ubon Ratchathani). The design of experiment analysis using the MINITAB Release 14 based on the compressive strength and tensile strength testing was conducted. According to the analysis results, it was found that the optimal proportions were calcined magnesite cement: metakaolin from Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom and Ubon Ratchathani equal to 63:37, 71:29, and 100:0, respectively. When used this formula to cast the cylinder and test the rice milling, it was found that the average broken rice percent was 32.52 and 38.29 for the cylinder contained the metakaolin from Udon Thani and Nakhon Phanom, respectively, which implied that the cylinder which contained the metakaolin from Udon Thani has higher efficiency than the cylinder which contained the metakaolin from Nakhon Phanom at 0.05 level of statistical significance. Whereas, the average wear rate of cylinder from both resources were 7.27 and 6.53 g/h, respectively.
Abstract: A two-dimensional numerical study for flow past a square cylinder in presence of flat plate both at upstream and downstream position is carried out using the single-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method for gap spacing 0.5 and 1. We select Reynolds numbers from 80 to 200. The wake structure mechanism within gap spacing and near wake region, vortex structures around and behind the main square cylinder in presence of flat plate are studied and compared with flow pattern around a single square cylinder. The results are obtained in form of vorticity contour, streamlines, power spectra analysis, time trace analysis of drag and lift coefficients. Four different types of flow patterns were observed in both configurations, named as (i) Quasi steady flow (QSF), (ii) steady flow (SF), (iii) shear layer reattachment (SLR), (iv) single bluff body (SBB). It is observed that upstream flat plate plays a vital role in significant drag reduction. On the other hand, rate of suppression of vortex shedding is high for downstream flat plate case at low Reynolds numbers. The reduction in mean drag force and root mean square value of drag force for upstream flat plate case are89.1% and 86.3% at (Re, g) = (80, 0.5d) and (120, 1d) and reduction for downstream flat plate case for mean drag force and root mean square value of drag force are 11.10% and 97.6% obtained at (180, 1d) and (180, 0.5d).
Abstract: Rotary entrainment is a phenomenon in which the
interface of two immiscible fluids are subjected to external flux by
means of rotation. Present work reports the experimental study on
rotary motion of a horizontal cylinder between the interface of air and
water to observe the penetration of gas inside the liquid. Experiments
have been performed to establish entrainment of air mass in water
alongside the cylindrical surface. The movement of tracer and seeded
particles has been tracked to calculate the speed and path of the
entrained air inside water. Simplified particle image velocimetry
technique has been used to trace the movement of particles/tracers at
the moment they are injected inside the entrainment zone and
suspended beads have been used to replicate the particle movement
with respect to time in order to determine the flow dynamics of the
fluid along the cylinder. Present paper establishes a thorough experimental analysis of the
rotary entrainment phenomenon between air and water keeping in
interest the extent to which we can intermix the two and also to study
its entrainment trajectories.
Abstract: The effects of flame-holder position, the ratio of flame
holder diameter to combustion chamber diameter and injection angle
on fuel propulsive droplets sizing and effective mass fraction have
been studied by a cold flow. We named the mass of fuel vapor inside
the flammability limit as the effective mass fraction. An empty
cylinder as well as a flame-holder which are a simulator for duct
combustion has been considered. The airflow comes into the cylinder
from one side and injection operation will be done by four nozzles
which are located on the entrance of cylinder. To fulfill the
calculations a modified version of KIVA-3V code which is a
transient, three-dimensional, multiphase, multi component code for
the analysis of chemically reacting flows with sprays, is used.
Abstract: The in-cylinder flow and mixture formations are
significant in view of today’s increasing concern on environmental
issues and stringent emission regulations. In this paper, the numerical
simulations of a SI engine at different engine speeds (2000-5000
rpm) at fixed intake flow pressure of 1 bar are studied using the AVL
FIRE software. The simulation results show that when the engine
speed at fixed intake flow pressure is increased, the volumetric
efficiency of the engine decreases. This is due to a richer fuel
conditions near the engine cylinder wall when engine speed is
increased. Significant effects of impingement are also noted on the
upper and side walls of the engine cylinder. These variations in
mixture formation before ignition could affect the thermodynamics
efficiency and specific fuel consumption that would lead to a reduced
engine performance.
Abstract: This numerical study aims to develop a coupled,
passive and active control strategy of the flow around a cylinder of
diameter D, and Re=4000. The strategy consists to put a cylindrical
rod in front of a deforming cylinder. The quasi- elliptical deformation
of cylinder follow a sinusoidal law in order to reduce the drag force.
To analyze the evolution of unsteady vortices, the Large Eddy
Simulation approach is used in this 2D simulation, carried out using
ANSYS – Fluent. The movement of deformation is reproduced using
an internal subroutine, introduced in the form of a User Defined
Function UDF. Two diameters of the rod were tested for a rod placed
at a distance L = 3 ×d, with an amplitudes of deformation A = 5%, A
= 25% and A = 50% of the cylinder diameter, the frequency of
deformation take the values fd = 1fn, 5fn and 8fn, which fn
represents the naturel vortex shedding frequency. The results show
substantial changes in the flow behavior and for a rod of 6mm (1%
D) with amplitude A = 25%, and with a 2fn frequency, drag
reduction of 60% was recorded.
Abstract: Creep behavior of thick-walled functionally graded cylinder consisting of AlSiC and subjected to internal pressure and high temperature has been analyzed. The functional relationship between strain rate with stress can be described by the well known threshold stress based creep law with a stress exponent of five. The effect of imposing non-linear particle gradient on the distribution of creep stresses in the thick-walled functionally graded composite cylinder has been investigated. The study revealed that for the assumed non-linear particle distribution, the radial stress decreases throughout the cylinder, whereas the tangential, axial and effective stresses have averaging effect. The strain rates in the functionally graded composite cylinder could be reduced to significant extent by employing non-linear gradient in the distribution of reinforcement.
Abstract: An experimental study of the turbulent near wake of a rotating circular cylinder was made at a Reynolds number of 2000 for velocity ratios, λ between 0 and 2.7. Particle image velocimetry data are analyzed to study the effects of rotation on the flow structures behind the cylinder. The results indicate that the rotation of the cylinder causes significant changes in the vortex formation. Kármán vortex shedding pattern of alternating vortices gives rise to strong periodic fluctuations of a vortex street for λ < 2.0. Alternate vortex shedding is weak and close to being suppressed at λ = 2.0 resulting a distorted street with vortices of alternating sense subsequently being found on opposite sides. Only part of the circulation is shed due to the interference in the separation point, mixing in the base region, re-attachment, and vortex cut-off phenomenon. Alternating vortex shedding pattern diminishes and completely disappears when the velocity ratio is 2.7. The shed vortices are insignificant in size and forming a single line of vortex street. It is clear that flow asymmetries will deteriorate vortex shedding, and when the asymmetries are large enough, total inhibition of a periodic street occurs.
Abstract: In this paper, a bond graph dynamic model for a valvecontrolled
hydraulic cylinder has been developed. A simplified bond
graph model of the inter-actuator interactions in a multi-cylinder
hydraulic system has also been presented. The overall bond graph
model of a valve-controlled hydraulic cylinder was developed by
combining the bond graph sub-models of the pump, spool valve and
the actuator using junction structures. Causality was then assigned
in order to obtain a computational model which could be simulated.
The causal bond graph model of the hydraulic cylinder was verified
by comparing the open loop state responses to those of an ODE
model which had been developed in literature based on the same
assumptions. The results were found to correlate very well both
in the shape of the curves, magnitude and the response times,
thus indicating that the developed model represents the hydraulic
dynamics of a valve-controlled cylinder. A simplified model for interactuator
interaction was presented by connecting an effort source with
constant pump pressure to the zero-junction from which the cylinders
in a multi-cylinder system are supplied with a constant pressure from
the pump. On simulating the state responses of the developed model
under different situations of cylinder operations, indicated that such
a simple model can be used to predict the inter-actuator interactions.

(continuity, Navier-Stokes and energy equations) have been solved
numerically using a finite volume formulation. In addition, the role of
the type of the thermal boundary condition imposed at cylinder
surface, namely, constant wall temperature (CWT) and constant heat
flux (CHF) are explored. Natural convection heat transfer from a
heated horizontal semi-circular cylinder (flat surface upward) has
been investigated for the following ranges of conditions; Grashof
number, and Prandtl number, . The governing partial differential
equations (continuity, Navier-Stokes and energy equations) have
been solved numerically using a finite volume formulation. In
addition, the role of the type of the thermal boundary condition
imposed at cylinder surface, namely, constant wall temperature
(CWT) and constant heat flux (CHF) are explored. The resulting flow
and temperature fields are visualized in terms of the streamline and
isotherm patterns in the proximity of the cylinder. The flow remains
attached to the cylinder surface over the range of conditions spanned
here except that for and ; at these conditions, a separated flow
region is observed when the condition of the constant wall
temperature is prescribed on the surface of the cylinder. The heat
transfer characteristics are analyzed in terms of the local and average
Nusselt numbers. The maximum value of the local Nusselt number
always occurs at the corner points whereas it is found to be minimum
at the rear stagnation point on the flat surface. Overall, the average
Nusselt number increases with Grashof number and/ or Prandtl
number in accordance with the scaling considerations. The numerical
results are used to develop simple correlations as functions of
Grashof and Prandtl number thereby enabling the interpolation of the
present numerical results for the intermediate values of the Prandtl or
Grashof numbers for both thermal boundary conditions.
Abstract: One of the major disadvantages of the minimally
invasive surgery (MIS) is the lack of tactile feedback to the surgeon.
In order to identify and avoid any damage to the grasped complex
tissue by endoscopic graspers, it is important to measure the local
softness of tissue during MIS. One way to display the measured
softness to the surgeon is a graphical method. In this paper, a new
tactile sensor has been reported. The tactile sensor consists of an
array of four softness sensors, which are integrated into the jaws of a
modified commercial endoscopic grasper. Each individual softness
sensor consists of two piezoelectric polymer Polyvinylidene Fluoride
(PVDF) films, which are positioned below a rigid and a compliant
cylinder. The compliant cylinder is fabricated using a micro molding
technique. The combination of output voltages from PVDF films is
used to determine the softness of the grasped object. The theoretical
analysis of the sensor is also presented.
A method has been developed with the aim of reproducing the
tactile softness to the surgeon by using a graphical method. In this
approach, the proposed system, including the interfacing and the data
acquisition card, receives signals from the array of softness sensors.
After the signals are processed, the tactile information is displayed
by means of a color coding method. It is shown that the degrees of
softness of the grasped objects/tissues can be visually differentiated
and displayed on a monitor.
Abstract: A numerical study is made of laminar, unsteady flow
behind a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder using a recently
developed higher order compact (HOC) scheme. The stream function
vorticity formulation of Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations in cylindrical
polar coordinates are considered as the governing equations. The
temporal behaviour of vortex formation and relevant streamline
patterns of the flow are scrutinized over broad ranges of two
externally specified parameters namely dimensionless forced
oscillating frequency Sf and dimensionless peak rotation rate αm for
the Reynolds-s number Re = 200. Excellent agreements are found
both qualitatively and quantitatively with the existing experimental
and standard numerical results.
Abstract: Axisymmetric vibration of an infinite Pyrocomposite
circular hollow cylinder made of inner and outer pyroelectric layer of
6mm-class bonded together by a Linear Elastic Material with Voids
(LEMV) layer is studied. The exact frequency equation is obtained
for the traction free surfaces with continuity condition at the
interfaces. Numerical results in the form of data and dispersion
curves for the first and second mode of the axisymmetric vibration of
the cylinder BaTio3 / Adhesive / BaTio3 by taking the Adhesive layer
as an existing Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) are
compared with a hypothetical LEMV layer with and without voids
and as well with a pyroelectric hollow cylinder. The damping is
analyzed through the imaginary parts of the complex frequencies.
Abstract: A numerical simulation of vortex-induced vibration of
a 2-dimensional elastic circular cylinder with two degree of freedom
under the uniform flow is calculated when Reynolds is 200.
2-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved
with the space-time finite element method, the equation of the cylinder
motion is solved with the new explicit integral method and the mesh
renew is achieved by the spring moving mesh technology. Considering
vortex-induced vibration with the low reduced damping parameter, the
variety trends of the lift coefficient, the drag coefficient, the
displacement of cylinder are analyzed under different oscillating
frequencies of cylinder. The phenomena of locked-in, beat and
phases-witch were captured successfully. The evolution of vortex
shedding from the cylinder with time is discussed. There are very
similar trends in characteristics between the results of the one degree
of freedom cylinder model and that of the two degree of freedom
cylinder model. The streamwise vibrations have a certain effect on the
lateral vibrations and their characteristics.
Abstract: Vortex-shedding phenomenon of the flow
around combined two bodies having various geometries and sizes has been investigated experimentally in the Reynolds
number range between 4.1x103 and 1.75x104. To see the effect
of the rotation of the bodies on the vortex shedding, the
combined bodies were rotated from 0° to 180°. The combined models have a cross section composing of a main circular cylinder and an attached circular or square cylinder. Results
have shown that Strouhal numbers for two cases were
changed considerably with the angle of incidence, while it was found to be largely independent of Reynolds number at 150. Characteristics of the vortex formation region and
location of flow attachments, reattachments, and separations
were observed by means of the flow visualizations.
Depending on the inclination angle the effects of flow
attachment, separation and reattachment on vortex-shedding phenomenon have been discussed.
Abstract: Numerical investigation of flow around a square cylinder are presented using the multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann methods at different Reynolds numbers. A detail analysis are given in terms of time-trace analysis of drag and lift coefficients, power spectra analysis of lift coefficient, vorticity contours visualizations, streamlines and phase diagrams. A number of physical quantities mean drag coefficient, drag coefficient, Strouhal number and root-mean-square values of drag and lift coefficients are calculated and compared with the well resolved experimental data and numerical results available in open literature. The Reynolds numbers affected the physical quantities.
