Abstract: In orthopedic surgery there are various situations in
which the surgeon needs to implement methods of cutting and
drilling the bone. With this type of procedure the generated friction
leads to a localized increase in temperature, which may lead to the
bone necrosis. Recognizing the importance of studying this
phenomenon, an experimental evaluation of the temperatures
developed during the procedure of drilling bone has been done.
Additionally the influence of the use of the procedure with / without
additional lubrication during drilling of bone has also been done. The
obtained results are presented and discussed and suggests an
advantage in using additional lubrication as a way to minimize the
appearance of bone tissue necrosis during bone drilling procedures.
Abstract: Lightning protection systems (LPS) for wind power
generation is becoming an important public issue. A serious damage
of blades, accidents where low-voltage and control circuit
breakdowns are frequently occur in many wind farms. A grounding
system is one of the most important components required for
appropriate LPSs in wind turbines WTs. Proper design of a wind
turbine grounding system is demanding and several factors for the
proper and effective implementation must taken into account. In this
paper proposed procedure of proper design of grounding systems for
a wind turbine was introduced. This procedure depends on measuring
of ground current of simulated wind farm under lightning taking into
consideration the soil ionization. The procedure also includes the
Ground Potential Rise (GPR) and the voltage distributions at ground
surface level and Touch potential. In particular, the contribution of
mitigating techniques, such as rings, rods and the proposed design
were investigated.
Abstract: Large patients’ queues at pharmacies and hospitals are a problem that faces the supposedly smooth and healthy environment in United Arab Emirates. As this sometimes leads to dissatisfaction from visiting patients, we tried to solve this problem with additional beneficial functions by developing the Hospital-Pharmacy Management System. The primary purpose of this research is to develop a system that joins the databases of a hospital and a pharmacy together for a better integrated system that provides a better coherent working environment. Three methods are used to design the system. These methods are detailed literature review, an extensive feasibility study and surveys for doctors, hospital IT managers and End-users. Interviews and surveys with related stakeholders were done to depict system’s requirements; design and prototype. The prototype illustrates system’s features and its client and server architecture. The system has a mobile application for visiting patients to, mainly, keep track of their prescriptions and access to their personal information. The server side allows doctors to submit the prescriptions online to pharmacists who will process them. This system is expected to reduce the long waiting queues of patients and increase their satisfaction while also reducing doctors and pharmacists’ stress and facilitating their work. It will be deployed to users of Android devices only. This limitation will be resolved, as one of main future enhancements, once the system finds acceptance from hospitals and pharmacies in United Arab Emirates.
Abstract: This paper presents the Literature Review of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips to reinforced concrete (RC) as a strengthening solution for T-beams. Although a great deal of research has been carried out on Rectangular beams strengthened with Fibre-Reinforced Polymer composites (FRP), Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have been increasingly studied for their application in the flexural or shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) members. A detailed discussion of the shearstrengthening repair with FRP is undertaken. This paper will be limited to research of CFRP material externally bonded to the tensile face of concrete beams. In particular, research studying the effect of externally applied CFRP materials on the shear performance of reinforced concrete beams will be reported.
Abstract: In this paper, an alternating implicit block method for
solving two dimensional scalar wave equation is presented. The
new method consist of two stages for each time step implemented
in alternating directions which are very simple in computation. To
increase the speed of computation, a group of adjacent points is
computed simultaneously. It is shown that the presented method
increase the maximum time step size and more accurate than the
conventional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and other
existing method of natural ordering.
Abstract: In this paper, a numerical solution based on sinc
functions is used for finding the solution of boundary value problems
which arise from the problems of calculus of variations. This
approximation reduce the problems to an explicit system of algebraic
equations. Some numerical examples are also given to illustrate the
accuracy and applicability of the presented method.
Abstract: Soil microbial activity is adversely affected by pollutants such as heavy metals, antibiotics and pesticides. Organic amendments including sewage sludge, municipal compost and vermicompost are recently used to improve soil structure and fertility. But, these materials contain heavy metals including Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni and Cu that are toxic to soil microorganisms and may lead to occurrence of more tolerant microbes. Among these, Pb is the most abundant and has more negative effect on soil microbial ecology. In this study, Pb levels of 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 mg Pb [as Pb(NO3)2] per kg soil were added to the pots containing 2 kg of a loamy soil and incubated for 6 months at 25°C with soil moisture of - 0.3 MPa. Dehydrogenase activity of soil as a measure of microbial activity was determined on 15, 30, 90 and 180 days after incubation. Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) was used as an electron acceptor in this assay. PICTs (IC50 values) were calculated for each Pb level and incubation time. Soil microbial activity was decreased by increasing Pb level during 30 days of incubation but the induced tolerance appeared on day 90 and thereafter. During 90 to 180 days of incubation, the PICT was gradually developed by increasing Pb level up to 200 mg kg-1, but the rate of enhancement was steeper at higher concentrations.
