Abstract: Laboratory studies of the stress-strain behavior of rocks specimens were conducted by using acoustic emission and laser-ultrasonic diagnostics. The sensitivity of the techniques allowed changes in the internal structure of the specimens under uniaxial compressive load to be examined at micro- and macro scales. It was shown that microcracks appear in geologic materials when the stress level reaches about 50% of breaking strength. Also, the characteristic stress of the main crack formation was registered in the process of single-stage compression of rocks. On the base of laser-ultrasonic echoscopy, 2D visualization of the internal structure of rocky soil specimens was realized, and the microcracks arising during uniaxial compression were registered.
Abstract: Performance of a Hamiltonian based particle method in simulation of nonlinear structural dynamics is subjected to investigation in terms of stability and accuracy. The governing equation of motion is derived based on Hamilton's principle of least action, while the deformation gradient is obtained according to Weighted Least Square method. The hyper-elasticity models of Saint Venant-Kirchhoff and a compressible version similar to Mooney- Rivlin are engaged for the calculation of second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor, respectively. Stability along with accuracy of numerical model is verified by reproducing critical stress fields in static and dynamic responses. As the results, although performance of Hamiltonian based model is evaluated as being acceptable in dealing with intense extensional stress fields, however kinds of instabilities reveal in the case of violent collision which can be most likely attributed to zero energy singular modes.
Abstract: The unsteady supersonic jet formed by a shock tube with a small high-pressure chamber was used as a simple alternative model for pulsed laser ablation. Understanding the vortex ring formed by the shock wave is crucial in clarifying the behavior of unsteady supersonic jet discharged from an elliptical cell. Therefore, this study investigated the behavior of vortex rings and a jet. The experiment and numerical calculation were conducted using the schlieren method and by solving the axisymmetric two-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations, respectively. In both, the calculation and the experiment, laser ablation is conducted for a certain duration, followed by discharge through the exit. Moreover, a parametric study was performed to demonstrate the effect of pressure ratio on the interaction among vortex rings and the supersonic jet. The interaction between the supersonic jet and the vortex rings increased the velocity of the supersonic jet up to the magnitude of the velocity at the center of the vortex rings. The interaction between the vortex rings increased the velocity at the center of the vortex ring.
Abstract: Trade liberalizations measures, as import tariff cuts, are not a sufficient trigger for trade growth. Given that price margins are narrow, traders and cargo operators tend to opt out of markets where the process of goods clearance is slow and costly. Excess paperwork and slow customs dispatch not only lead to institutional breakdowns and corruption but also to increasing transaction cost and trade constraints. The objective of this paper is, therefore, two-fold: First, to evaluate the relationship between institutional and infrastructural performance indexes and trade growth in container throughput; and, second, to investigate the causes for differences in container demurrage and detention fees in Latin American countries (using other emerging countries as benchmarking). The analysis is focused on manufactured goods, typically transported by containers. Institutional and infrastructure bottlenecks and, therefore, the country logistics efficiency – measured by the Logistics Performance Index (LPI, World Bank-WB) – are compared with other indexes, such as the Doing Business index (WB) and the Corruption Perception Index (Transparency International). The main results based on the comparison between Latin American countries and the others emerging countries point out in that the growth in containers trade is directly related to LPI performance. It has also been found that the main hypothesis is valid as aspects that more specifically identify trade facilitation and corruption are significant drivers of logistics performance. The exam of port efficiency (demurrage and detention fees) has demonstrated that not necessarily higher level of efficiency is related to lower charges; however, reductions in fees have been more significant within non-Latin American emerging countries.
Abstract: This paper presents how smart glasses and voice commands can be used for improving the maintenance process of industrial gas turbines. It presents the process of inspecting a gas turbine’s combustion chamber and how it is currently performed using a set of paper-based documents. In order to improve this process, a portable hands-free process assistance system has been conceived. In the following, it will be presented how the approach of user-centered design and the method of paper prototyping have been successfully applied in order to design a user interface and a corresponding workflow model that describes the possible interaction patterns between the user and the interface. The presented evaluation of these results suggests that the assistance system could help the user by rendering multiple manual activities obsolete, thus allowing him to work hands-free and to save time for generating protocols.
Abstract: Mechanical fasteners especially bolting is commonly
used in joining carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite
structures due to their good joinability and easy for maintenance
characteristics. Since this approach involves with notching, a proper
progressive damage model (PDM) need to be implemented and
verified to capture existence of damages in the structure. A three
dimensional (3D) failure criteria of Puck is established to predict the
ultimate bearing failure of such joint. The failure criteria incorporated
with degradation scheme are coded based on user subroutine executed
in Abaqus. Single lap joint (SLJ) of composite bolted joint is used as
target configuration. The results revealed that the PDM adopted here
could sufficiently predict the behaviour of composite bolted joint up
to ultimate bearing failure. In addition, mesh refinement near holes
increased the accuracy of predicted strength as well as computational
effort.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a video based smoke detection
algorithm based on TVL1 optical flow estimation. The main part
of the algorithm is an accumulating system for motion angles and
upward motion speed of the flow field. We optimized the usage of
TVL1 flow estimation for the detection of smoke with very low smoke
density. Therefore, we use adapted flow parameters and estimate the
flow field on difference images. We show in theory and in evaluation
that this improves the performance of smoke detection significantly.
We evaluate the smoke algorithm using videos with different smoke
densities and different backgrounds. We show that smoke detection
is very reliable in varying scenarios. Further we verify that our
algorithm is very robust towards crowded scenes disturbance videos.
Abstract: The paper describes the results from a research project about repair of welds. The repair was carried out by grinding the flawed seams and re-welding them. The main task was to determine the FAT classes of original state and after repair of seams according to the assessment procedures, such as nominal, structural and effective notch stress approach. The first part shows the results of the tests, the second part encloses numerical analysis and evaluation of results to determine the fatigue strength classes according to three assessment procedures.
Abstract: This paper presents a self-sustaining mobile system for
counting and classification of vehicles through processing video. It
proposes a counting and classification algorithm divided in four steps
that can be executed multiple times in parallel in a SBC (Single
Board Computer), like the Raspberry Pi 2, in such a way that it
can be implemented in real time. The first step of the proposed
algorithm limits the zone of the image that it will be processed.
The second step performs the detection of the mobile objects using
a BGS (Background Subtraction) algorithm based on the GMM
(Gaussian Mixture Model), as well as a shadow removal algorithm
using physical-based features, followed by morphological operations.
In the first step the vehicle detection will be performed by using
edge detection algorithms and the vehicle following through Kalman
filters. The last step of the proposed algorithm registers the vehicle
passing and performs their classification according to their areas.
An auto-sustainable system is proposed, powered by batteries and
photovoltaic solar panels, and the data transmission is done through
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)eliminating the need of using
external cable, which will facilitate it deployment and translation to
any location where it could operate. The self-sustaining trailer will
allow the counting and classification of vehicles in specific zones
with difficult access.
Abstract: The reduction of water content in crude oil emulsions reduces pipeline corrosion potential and increases the productivity. Chemical emulsification of crude oil emulsions is one of the methods available to reduce the water content. Presence of demulsifier causes the film layer between the crude oil emulsion and water droplets to become unstable leading to the acceleration of water coalescence. This research has been performed to study the improvement performance of a chemical demulsifier by silica nanoparticles. The silica nano-particles have been synthesized by sol-gel technique and precipitation using poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly ethylene glycol (PEG) as surfactants and then nano-particles are added to the demulsifier. The silica nanoparticles were characterized by Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) and SEM. Upon the addition of nanoparticles, bottle tests have been carried out to separate and measure the water content. The results show that silica nano-particles increase the demulsifier efficiency by about 40%.
Abstract: This paper describes a part of the integrating work between assembly design and assembly process planning domains (APP). The work is based, in its first stage, on modelling assembly features to support APP. A multi-layer architecture, based on feature-based modelling, is proposed to establish a dynamic and adaptable link between product design using CAD tools and APP. The proposed approach is based on deriving “specific function” features from the “generic” assembly and form features extracted from the CAD tools. A hierarchal structure from “generic” to “specific” and from “high level geometrical entities” to “low level geometrical entities” is proposed in order to integrate geometrical and assembly data extracted from geometrical and assembly modelers to the required processes and resources in APP. The feature concept, feature-based modelling, and feature recognition techniques are reviewed.
Abstract: The present study presents, firstly, to characterize the physicochemical quality of brackish groundwater of the Terminal Complex (TC) from the region of Eloued-souf and to investigate the presence of fluoride, and secondly, to study the comparison of adsorbing power of three materials, such as (activated alumina AA, sodium clay SC and hydroxyapatite HAP) against the groundwater in the region of Eloued-souf. To do this, a sampling campaign over 16 wells and consumer taps was undertaken. The results show that the groundwater can be characterized by very high fluoride content and excessive mineralization that require in some cases, specific treatment before supply. The study of adsorption revealed removal efficiencies fluoride by three adsorbents, maximum adsorption is achieved after 45 minutes at 90%, 83.4% and 73.95%, and with an adsorbed fluoride content of 0.22 mg/L, 0.318 mg/L and 0.52 mg/L for AA, HAP and SC, respectively. The acidity of the medium significantly affects the removal fluoride. Results deducted from the adsorption isotherms also showed that the retention follows the Langmuir model. The adsorption tests by adsorbent materials show that the physicochemical characteristics of brackish water are changed after treatment. The adsorption mechanism is an exchange between the OH- ions and fluoride ions. Three materials are proving to be effective adsorbents for fluoride removal that could be developed into a viable technology to help reduce the salinity of the Saharan hyper-fluorinated waters. Finally, a comparison between the results obtained from the different adsorbents allowed us to conclude that the defluoridation by AA is the process of choice for many waters of the region of Eloued-souf, because it was shown to be a very interesting and promising technique.
Abstract: Complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) loaded microstrip square patch antenna has been optimally designed with the help of high frequency structure simulator (HFSS). The antenna has been fabricated on the basis of the simulation design data and experimentally tested in anechoic chamber to evaluate its gain, bandwidth, efficiency and polarization characteristics. The CSRR loaded microstrip patch antenna has been found to realize significant size miniaturization (to the extent of 24%) compared to the conventional-type microstrip patch antenna both operating at the same frequency (5.2 GHz). The fabricated antenna could realize a maximum gain of 4.17 dB, 10 dB impedance bandwidth of 34 MHz, efficiency 50.73% and with maximum cross-pol of 10.56 dB down at the operating frequency. This practically designed antenna with its miniaturized size is expected to be useful for airborne and space borne applications at microwave frequency.
Abstract: This article discusses the inclusion of people with
disabilities in the process of testing an accessible system solution
for distance education. The accessible system, team profile,
methodologies and techniques covered in the testing process are
presented. The testing process shown in this paper was designed
from the experience with user. The testing process emerged from
lessons learned from past experiences and the end user is present at
all stages of the tests. Also, lessons learned are reported and how it
was possible the maturing of the team and the methods resulting in
a simple, productive and effective process.
Abstract: Kenya Amboseli National Park hosts the largest elephant’s population in the country, protected and managed by the government under the Kenya Wildlife Service. The park has been experiencing highly organized poaching, in terms of both total elephant deaths and the level of sophistication employed by the poachers. The main objective of this study is to use GIS to map the entire park properly. GIS map of the park was produced including all leading roads, neighboring land use, main gates and water points with geographic co-ordinates well documented. The result obtained indicates the three main gates and the airport as the hotspot points that the tusks can be ferried out of the park. Therefore, this study recommends the government to put strong security measures on these areas. These procedures can lower the poaching threat and assist the game warders properly manage the endangered species.
Abstract: This paper presents a nonlinear differential model,
for a three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) suited
for control applications. It is based on a 8-dofs, lumped
parameters structural dynamics coupled with a quasi-steady sectional
aerodynamics. In particular, using the Euler-Lagrange Equation
(Energetic Variation approach), the authors derive, and successively
validate, such model. For the derivation of the aerodynamic model,
the Greenbergs theory, an extension of the theory proposed by
Theodorsen to the case of thin airfoils undergoing pulsating flows,
is used. Specifically, in this work, the authors restricted that theory
under the hypothesis of low perturbation reduced frequency k,
which causes the lift deficiency function C(k) to be real and equal
to 1. Furthermore, the expressions of the aerodynamic loads are
obtained using the quasi-steady strip theory (Hodges and Ormiston),
as a function of the chordwise and normal components of relative
velocity between flow and airfoil Ut, Up, their derivatives, and
section angular velocity ε˙. For the validation of the proposed model,
the authors carried out open and closed-loop simulations of a 5
MW HAWT, characterized by radius R =61.5 m and by mean chord
c = 3 m, with a nominal angular velocity Ωn = 1.266rad/sec.
The first analysis performed is the steady state solution, where
a uniform wind Vw = 11.4 m/s is considered and a collective
pitch angle θ = 0.88◦ is imposed. During this step, the authors
noticed that the proposed model is intrinsically periodic due to
the effect of the wind and of the gravitational force. In order
to reject this periodic trend in the model dynamics, the authors
propose a collective repetitive control algorithm coupled with a PD
controller. In particular, when the reference command to be tracked
and/or the disturbance to be rejected are periodic signals with a
fixed period, the repetitive control strategies can be applied due to
their high precision, simple implementation and little performance
dependency on system parameters. The functional scheme of a
repetitive controller is quite simple and, given a periodic reference
command, is composed of a control block Crc(s) usually added
to an existing feedback control system. The control block contains
and a free time-delay system eτs in a positive feedback loop, and a
low-pass filter q(s). It should be noticed that, while the time delay
term reduces the stability margin, on the other hand the low pass
filter is added to ensure stability. It is worth noting that, in this
work, the authors propose a phase shifting for the controller and
the delay system has been modified as e^(−(T−γk)), where T is the
period of the signal and γk is a phase shifting of k samples of the
same periodic signal. It should be noticed that, the phase shifting
technique is particularly useful in non-minimum phase systems, such
as flexible structures. In fact, using the phase shifting, the iterative
algorithm could reach the convergence also at high frequencies.
Notice that, in our case study, the shifting of k samples depends
both on the rotor angular velocity Ω and on the rotor azimuth
angle Ψ: we refer to this controller as a spatial repetitive controller.
The collective repetitive controller has also been coupled with a C(s) = PD(s), in order to dampen oscillations of the blades.
The performance of the spatial repetitive controller is compared
with an industrial PI controller. In particular, starting from wind
speed velocity Vw = 11.4 m/s the controller is asked to maintain the
nominal angular velocity Ωn = 1.266rad/s after an instantaneous
increase of wind speed (Vw = 15 m/s). Then, a purely periodic
external disturbance is introduced in order to stress the capabilities
of the repetitive controller. The results of the simulations show that,
contrary to a simple PI controller, the spatial repetitive-PD controller
has the capability to reject both external disturbances and periodic
trend in the model dynamics. Finally, the nominal value of the
angular velocity is reached, in accordance with results obtained with
commercial software for a turbine of the same type.
Abstract: In this paper, a detailed simulation model of a solar-powered triple-effect LiBr–H2O absorption chiller is developed to supply both cooling and heating demand of a large-scale building, aiming to reduce the fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in building sector. TRNSYS 17 is used to simulate the performance of the system over a typical year. A combined energetic-economic-environmental analysis is conducted to determine the system annual primary energy consumption and the total cost, which are considered as two conflicting objectives. A multi-objective optimization of the system is performed using a genetic algorithm to minimize these objectives simultaneously. The optimization results show that the final optimal design of the proposed plant has a solar fraction of 72% and leads to an annual primary energy saving of 0.69 GWh and annual CO2 emissions reduction of ~166 tonnes, as compared to a conventional HVAC system. The economics of this design, however, is not appealing without public funding, which is often the case for many renewable energy systems. The results show that a good funding policy is required in order for these technologies to achieve satisfactory payback periods within the lifetime of the plant.
Abstract: In this study, three local isolates of Trichoderma (Tr1: T. viride, Tr2: T. harzianum and Tr3: T. asperellum) were isolated and evaluated for their biocontrol effectiveness under in vitro conditions and in greenhouse. In vitro bioassay revealed a biopotential control against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis lycopersici and Meloidogyne javanica (RKN) separately. All species of Trichoderma exhibited biocontrol performance and (Tr1) Trichoderma viride was the most efficient. In fact, growth rate inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis lycopersici (FORL) was reached 75.5% with Tr1. Parasitism rate of root-knot nematode was 60% for juveniles and 75% for eggs with the same one. Pots experiment results showed that Tr1 and Tr2, compared to chemical treatment, enhanced the plant growth and exhibited better antagonism against root-knot nematode and root-rot fungi separated or combined. All Trichoderma isolates revealed a bioprotection potential against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis lycopersici. When pathogen fungi inoculated alone, Fusarium wilt index and browning vascular rate were reduced significantly with Tr1 (0.91, 2.38%) and Tr2 (1.5, 5.5%), respectively. In the case of combined infection with Fusarium and nematode, the same isolate of Trichoderma Tr1 and Tr2 decreased Fusarium wilt index at 1.1 and 0.83 and reduced the browning vascular rate at 6.5% and 6%, respectively. Similarly, the isolate Tr1 and Tr2 caused maximum inhibition of nematode multiplication. Multiplication rate was declined at 4% with both isolates either tomato infected by nematode separately or concomitantly with Fusarium. The chemical treatment was moderate in activity against Meloidogyne javanica and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis lycopersici alone and combined.
Abstract: Finite Element Models (FEMs) are widely used in order to study and predict the dynamic properties of structures and usually, the prediction can be obtained with much more accuracy in the case of a single component than in the case of assemblies. Especially for structural dynamics studies, in the low and middle frequency range, most complex FEMs can be seen as assemblies made by linear components joined together at interfaces. From a modelling and computational point of view, these types of joints can be seen as localized sources of stiffness and damping and can be modelled as lumped spring/damper elements, most of time, characterized by nonlinear constitutive laws. On the other side, most of FE programs are able to run nonlinear analysis in time-domain. They treat the whole structure as nonlinear, even if there is one nonlinear degree of freedom (DOF) out of thousands of linear ones, making the analysis unnecessarily expensive from a computational point of view. In this work, a methodology in order to obtain the nonlinear frequency response of structures, whose nonlinearities can be considered as localized sources, is presented. The work extends the well-known Structural Dynamic Modification Method (SDMM) to a nonlinear set of modifications, and allows getting the Nonlinear Frequency Response Functions (NLFRFs), through an ‘updating’ process of the Linear Frequency Response Functions (LFRFs). A brief summary of the analytical concepts is given, starting from the linear formulation and understanding what the implications of the nonlinear one, are. The response of the system is formulated in both: time and frequency domain. First the Modal Database is extracted and the linear response is calculated. Secondly the nonlinear response is obtained thru the NL SDMM, by updating the underlying linear behavior of the system. The methodology, implemented in MATLAB, has been successfully applied to estimate the nonlinear frequency response of two systems. The first one is a two DOFs spring-mass-damper system, and the second example takes into account a full aircraft FE Model. In spite of the different levels of complexity, both examples show the reliability and effectiveness of the method. The results highlight a feasible and robust procedure, which allows a quick estimation of the effect of localized nonlinearities on the dynamic behavior. The method is particularly powerful when most of the FE Model can be considered as acting linearly and the nonlinear behavior is restricted to few degrees of freedom. The procedure is very attractive from a computational point of view because the FEM needs to be run just once, which allows faster nonlinear sensitivity analysis and easier implementation of optimization procedures for the calibration of nonlinear models.
Abstract: This paper presents a contribution to the design of a multi-agent for the energy management system in a hybrid energy system (SEH). The multi-agent-based energy-coordination management system (MA-ECMS) is based mainly on coordination between agents. The agents share the tasks and exchange information through communications protocols to achieve the main goal. This intelligent system can fully manage the consumption and production or simply to make proposals for action he thinks is best. The initial step is to give a presentation for the system that we want to model in order to understand all the details as much as possible. In our case, it is to implement a system for simulating a process control of energy management.
