Abstract: In this study, the sorption of Malachite green (MG) on Hydrilla verticillata biomass, a submerged aquatic plant, was investigated in a batch system. The effects of operating parameters such as temperature, adsorbent dosage, contact time, adsorbent size, and agitation speed on the sorption of Malachite green were analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). The proposed quadratic model for central composite design (CCD) fitted very well to the experimental data that it could be used to navigate the design space according to ANOVA results. The optimum sorption conditions were determined as temperature - 43.5oC, adsorbent dosage - 0.26g, contact time - 200min, adsorbent size - 0.205mm (65mesh), and agitation speed - 230rpm. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to the equilibrium data. The maximum monolayer coverage capacity of Hydrilla verticillata biomass for MG was found to be 91.97 mg/g at an initial pH 8.0 indicating that the optimum sorption initial pH. The external and intra particle diffusion models were also applied to sorption data of Hydrilla verticillata biomass with MG, and it was found that both the external diffusion as well as intra particle diffusion contributes to the actual sorption process. The pseudo-second order kinetic model described the MG sorption process with a good fitting.
Abstract: This paper explains the cause of nonlinearity in floor
attenuation hither to left unexplained. The performance degradation
occurring in air interface for GSM signals is quantitatively analysed
using the concept of Radiating Columns of buildings. The signal
levels were measured using Wireless Network Optimising Drive Test
Tool (E6474A of Agilent Technologies). The measurements were
taken in reflected signal environment under usual fading conditions
on actual GSM signals radiated from base stations. A mathematical
model is derived from the measurements to predict the GSM signal
levels in different floors. It was applied on three buildings and found
that the predicted signal levels deviated from the measured levels
with in +/- 2 dB for all floors. It is more accurate than the prediction
models based on Floor Attenuation Factor. It can be used for
planning proper indoor coverage in multi storey buildings.
Abstract: In order to monitor for traffic traversal, sensors can be
deployed to perform collaborative target detection. Such a sensor
network achieves a certain level of detection performance with the
associated costs of deployment and routing protocol. This paper
addresses these two points of sensor deployment and routing algorithm
in the situation where the absolute quantity of sensors or total energy
becomes insufficient. This discussion on the best deployment system
concluded that two kinds of deployments; Normal and Power law
distributions, show 6 and 3 times longer than Random distribution in
the duration of coverage, respectively. The other discussion on routing
algorithm to achieve good performance in each deployment system
was also addressed. This discussion concluded that, in place of the
traditional algorithm, a new algorithm can extend the time of coverage
duration by 4 times in a Normal distribution, and in the circumstance
where every deployed sensor operates as a binary model.
Abstract: Testing accounts for the major percentage of technical
contribution in the software development process. Typically, it
consumes more than 50 percent of the total cost of developing a
piece of software. The selection of software tests is a very important
activity within this process to ensure the software reliability
requirements are met. Generally tests are run to achieve maximum
coverage of the software code and very little attention is given to the
achieved reliability of the software. Using an existing methodology,
this paper describes how to use Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) to
select unit tests based on their contribution to the reliability of the
module under consideration. In particular the work examines how the
approach can enhance test-first development by assessing the quality
of test suites resulting from this development methodology and
providing insight into additional tests that can significantly reduce
the achieved reliability. In this way the method can produce an
optimal selection of inputs and the order in which the tests are
executed to maximize the software reliability. To illustrate this
approach, a belief network is constructed for a modern software
system incorporating the expert opinion, expressed through
probabilities of the relative quality of the elements of the software,
and the potential effectiveness of the software tests. The steps
involved in constructing the Bayesian Network are explained as is a
method to allow for the test suite resulting from test-driven
development.
Abstract: Target tracking and localization are important applications
in wireless sensor networks. In these applications, sensor nodes
collectively monitor and track the movement of a target. They have
limited energy supplied by batteries, so energy efficiency is essential
for sensor networks. Most existing target tracking protocols need to
wake up sensors periodically to perform tracking. Some unnecessary
energy waste is thus introduced. In this paper, an energy efficient
protocol for target localization is proposed. In order to preserve
energy, the protocol fixes the number of sensors for target tracking,
but it retains the quality of target localization in an acceptable
level. By selecting a set of sensors for target localization, the other
sensors can sleep rather than periodically wake up to track the target.
Simulation results show that the proposed protocol saves a significant
amount of energy and also prolongs the network lifetime.
Abstract: Parsing is important in Linguistics and Natural
Language Processing to understand the syntax and semantics of a
natural language grammar. Parsing natural language text is
challenging because of the problems like ambiguity and inefficiency.
Also the interpretation of natural language text depends on context
based techniques. A probabilistic component is essential to resolve
ambiguity in both syntax and semantics thereby increasing accuracy
and efficiency of the parser. Tamil language has some inherent
features which are more challenging. In order to obtain the solutions,
lexicalized and statistical approach is to be applied in the parsing
with the aid of a language model. Statistical models mainly focus on
semantics of the language which are suitable for large vocabulary
tasks where as structural methods focus on syntax which models
small vocabulary tasks. A statistical language model based on Trigram
for Tamil language with medium vocabulary of 5000 words has
been built. Though statistical parsing gives better performance
through tri-gram probabilities and large vocabulary size, it has some
disadvantages like focus on semantics rather than syntax, lack of
support in free ordering of words and long term relationship. To
overcome the disadvantages a structural component is to be
incorporated in statistical language models which leads to the
implementation of hybrid language models. This paper has attempted
to build phrase structured hybrid language model which resolves
above mentioned disadvantages. In the development of hybrid
language model, new part of speech tag set for Tamil language has
been developed with more than 500 tags which have the wider
coverage. A phrase structured Treebank has been developed with 326
Tamil sentences which covers more than 5000 words. A hybrid
language model has been trained with the phrase structured Treebank
using immediate head parsing technique. Lexicalized and statistical
parser which employs this hybrid language model and immediate
head parsing technique gives better results than pure grammar and
trigram based model.
Abstract: The energy consumption of home femto base stations
(BSs) can be reduced, by turning off the Wi-Fi radio interface when
there is no mobile station (MS) under the coverage of the BSs or
MSs do not transmit or receive data packet for long time, especially
in late night. In the energy-efficient home femto BSs, if MSs have
any data packet to transmit and the Wi-Fi radio interface in off
state, MSs wake up the Wi-Fi radio interface of home femto BSs
by using additional low power radio interface. In this paper, the
performance of the energy-efficient home femto BSs from the aspect
of energy consumption and cumulative average delay, and show the
effect of various parameters on energy consumption and cumulative
average delay. From the results, the tradeoff relationship between
energy consumption and cumulative average delay is shown and thus,
appropriate operation should be needed to balance the tradeoff.
Abstract: The assessment of surface waters in Enugu metropolis
for fecal coliform bacteria was undertaken. Enugu urban was divided
into three areas (A1, A2 and A3), and fecal coliform bacteria
analysed in the surface waters found in these areas for four years
(2005-2008). The plate count method was used for the analyses. Data
generated were subjected to statistical tests involving; Normality test,
Homogeneity of variance test, correlation test, and tolerance limit
test. The influence of seasonality and pollution trends were
investigated using time series plots. Results from the tolerance limit
test at 95% coverage with 95% confidence, and with respect to EU
maximum permissible concentration show that the three areas suffer
from fecal coliform pollution. To this end, remediation procedure
involving the use of saw-dust extracts from three woods namely;
Chlorophora-Excelsa (C-Excelsa),Khayan-Senegalensis,(CSenegalensis)
and Erythrophylum-Ivorensis (E-Ivorensis) in
controlling the coliforms was studied. Results show that mixture of
the acetone extracts of the woods show the most effective
antibacterial inhibitory activities (26.00mm zone of inhibition)
against E-coli. Methanol extract mixture of the three woods gave best
inhibitory activity (26.00mm zone of inhibition) against S-areus, and
25.00mm zones of inhibition against E-Aerogenes. The aqueous
extracts mixture gave acceptable zones of inhibitions against the
three bacteria organisms.
