Abstract: The use of additions in cement in manufacturing,
mortar and concrete offers economic and ecological advantages. Cements with additions such as limestone, slag and natural
pouzzolana are produced in cement factories in Algeria. Several studies analyzed the effect of these additions on the physical and
mechanical properties as well as the durability of concrete. However,
few studies were conducted on the effect of local metakaolin on
mechanical properties and durability of concrete. The main purpose
of this paper is to analyze the performance of mortar and concrete with local metakaolin. The preparation of the metakaolin was carried
out by calcination of kaolin at a temperature of 850 °C for a period of 3 hours. The experimental results have shown that the rates of
substitutions of 10 and 15% metakaolin increases the compressive
strength and flexural strength at both early age and long term. The durability and the permeability were also improved by reducing the
coefficient of sorptivity.
Abstract: Twelve lactating Etawah Crossedbred goats were used
in this study. Goat feed consisted of Cally andra callothyrsus,
Pennisetum purpureum, wheat bran and dried fermented cassava
peel. The cassava peels were fermented with a traditional culture
called “ragi tape" (mixed culture of Saccharomyces cerevisae,
Aspergillus sp, Candida, Hasnula and Acetobacter). The goats were
divided into 2 groups (Control and Treated) of six does. The
experimental diet of the Control group consisted of 70% of roughage
(fresh Callyandra callothyrsus and Pennisetum purpureum 60:40)
and 30% of wheat bran on dry matter (DM) base. In the Treated
group 30% of wheat bran was replaced with dried fermented cassava
peels. Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance
followed SPSS program. The concentration of HCN in fermented
cassava peel decreased to non toxic level. Nutrient composition of
dried fermented cassava peel consisted of 85.75% dry matter;
5.80% crude protein and 82.51% total digestible nutrien (TDN).
Substitution of 30% of wheat bran with dried fermented cassava peel
in the diet had no effect on dry matter and organic matter intake but
significantly (P< 0.05) decreased crude protein and TDN
consumption as well as milk yields and milk composition. The study
recommended to reduced the level of substitution to less than 30% of
concentrates in the diet in order to avoid low nutrient intake and milk
production of goats.
Abstract: The study was conducted to evaluate the quality
characteristics of cookies produced from sweet potato-fermented
soybean flour. Cookies were subjected to proximate and sensory
analysis to determine the acceptability of the product. Protein, fat and
ash increased as the proportion of soybean flour increased, ranging
from 13.8-21.7, 1.22-5.25 and 2.20-2.57 respectively. The crude fibre
content was within the range of 3.08-4.83%. The moisture content of
the cookies decreased with increase in soybean flour from 3.42-
2.13%. Cookies produced from whole sweet potato flour had the
highest moisture content of 3.42% while 30% substitution had the
lowest moisture content 2.13%. A nine point hedonic scale was used
to evaluate the organoleptic characteristics of the cookies. The
sensory analysis indicated that there was no significant difference
between the cookies produced even when compared to the control
100% sweet potato cookies. The overall acceptance of the cookies
was ranked to 20% soybean flour substitute.
Abstract: This paper proposes the authentication method using
ESA algorithm instead of using CAVE algorithm in the CDMA
mobile communication systems including IS-95 and CDMA2000 1x.
And, we analyze to apply ESA mechanism on behalf of CAVE
mechanism without the change of message format and air interface in
the existing CDMA systems. If ESA algorithm can be used as the
substitution of CAVE algorithm, security strength of authentication
algorithm is intensified without protocol change. An algorithm
replacement proposed in this paper is not to change an authentication
mechanism, but to configure input of ESA algorithm and to produce
output. Therefore, our proposal can be the compatible to the existing
systems.
Abstract: The literature reports a large number of approaches for
measuring the similarity between protein sequences. Most of these
approaches estimate this similarity using alignment-based techniques
that do not necessarily yield biologically plausible results, for two
reasons.
First, for the case of non-alignable (i.e., not yet definitively aligned
and biologically approved) sequences such as multi-domain, circular
permutation and tandem repeat protein sequences, alignment-based
approaches do not succeed in producing biologically plausible results.
This is due to the nature of the alignment, which is based on the
matching of subsequences in equivalent positions, while non-alignable
proteins often have similar and conserved domains in non-equivalent
positions.
Second, the alignment-based approaches lead to similarity measures
that depend heavily on the parameters set by the user for the alignment
(e.g., gap penalties and substitution matrices). For easily alignable
protein sequences, it's possible to supply a suitable combination of
input parameters that allows such an approach to yield biologically
plausible results. However, for difficult-to-align protein sequences,
supplying different combinations of input parameters yields different
results. Such variable results create ambiguities and complicate the
similarity measurement task.
To overcome these drawbacks, this paper describes a novel and
effective approach for measuring the similarity between protein
sequences, called SAF for Substitution and Alignment Free. Without
resorting either to the alignment of protein sequences or to substitution
relations between amino acids, SAF is able to efficiently detect the
significant subsequences that best represent the intrinsic properties of
protein sequences, those underlying the chronological dependencies of
structural features and biochemical activities of protein sequences.
Moreover, by using a new efficient subsequence matching scheme,
SAF more efficiently handles protein sequences that contain similar
structural features with significant meaning in chronologically
non-equivalent positions. To show the effectiveness of SAF, extensive
experiments were performed on protein datasets from different
databases, and the results were compared with those obtained by
several mainstream algorithms.
Abstract: An optimal solution for a large number of constraint
satisfaction problems can be found using the technique of
substitution and elimination of variables analogous to the technique
that is used to solve systems of equations. A decision function
f(A)=max(A2) is used to determine which variables to eliminate. The
algorithm can be expressed in six lines and is remarkable in both its
simplicity and its ability to find an optimal solution. However it is
inefficient in that it needs to square the updated A matrix after each
variable elimination. To overcome this inefficiency the algorithm is
analyzed and it is shown that the A matrix only needs to be squared
once at the first step of the algorithm and then incrementally updated
for subsequent steps, resulting in significant improvement and an
algorithm complexity of O(n3).
Abstract: This paper aims to present the reviews of the
application of neural network in shunt active power filter (SAPF).
From the review, three out of four components of SAPF structure,
which are harmonic detection component, compensating current
control, and DC bus voltage control, have been adopted some of
neural network architecture as part of its component or even
substitution. The objectives of most papers in using neural network in
SAPF are to increase the efficiency, stability, accuracy, robustness,
tracking ability of the systems of each component. Moreover,
minimizing unneeded signal due to the distortion is the ultimate goal
in applying neural network to the SAPF. The most famous
architecture of neural network in SAPF applications are ADALINE
and Backpropagation (BP).
Abstract: The ability to distinguish missense nucleotide
substitutions that contribute to harmful effect from those that do not
is a difficult problem usually accomplished through functional in
vivo analyses. In this study, instead current biochemical methods, the
effects of missense mutations upon protein structure and function
were assayed by means of computational methods and information
from the databases. For this order, the effects of new missense
mutations in exon 5 of PTEN gene upon protein structure and
function were examined. The gene coding for PTEN was identified
and localized on chromosome region 10q23.3 as the tumor
suppressor gene. The utilization of these methods were shown that
c.319G>A and c.341T>G missense mutations that were recognized in
patients with breast cancer and Cowden disease, could be pathogenic.
This method could be use for analysis of missense mutation in others
genes.
Abstract: Weblog is an Internet tool that is believed to possess
great potential to facilitate learning in education. This study wants to
know if weblog can be used to promote students- critical thinking. It
used a group of secondary two students from a Singapore school to
write weblogs as a means of substitution for their traditional
handwritten assignments. The topics for the weblogging are taken
from History syllabus but modified to suit the purpose of this study.
Weblogs from the students were collected and analysed using a
known coding system for measuring critical thinking. Results show
that the topic for blogging is crucial in determining the types of
critical thinking employed by the students. Students are seen to
display critical thinking traits in the areas of information sourcing,
linking information to arguments and viewpoints justification.
Students- criticalness is more profound when the information for
writing a topic is readily available. Otherwise, they tend to be less
critical and subjective. The study also found that students lack the
ability to source for external information suggesting that students
may need to be taught information literacy in order to widen their use
of critical thinking skills.
