Abstract: In this study thermodynamic performance analysis of a
combined organic Rankine cycle and ejector refrigeration cycle is
carried out for use of low-grade heat source in the form of sensible
energy. Special attention is paid to the effects of system parameters
including the turbine inlet temperature and turbine inlet pressure on the
characteristics of the system such as ratios of mass flow rate, net work
production, and refrigeration capacity as well as the coefficient of
performance and exergy efficiency of the system. Results show that
for a given source the coefficient of performance increases with
increasing of the turbine inlet pressure. However, the exergy
efficiency has an optimal condition with respect to the turbine inlet
pressure.
Abstract: The present models and simulation algorithms of intracellular stochastic kinetics are usually based on the premise that diffusion is so fast that the concentrations of all the involved species are homogeneous in space. However, recents experimental measurements of intracellular diffusion constants indicate that the assumption of a homogeneous well-stirred cytosol is not necessarily valid even for small prokaryotic cells. In this work a mathematical treatment of diffusion that can be incorporated in a stochastic algorithm simulating the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion system is presented. The movement of a molecule A from a region i to a region j of the space is represented as a first order reaction Ai k- ! Aj , where the rate constant k depends on the diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficients are modeled as function of the local concentration of the solutes, their intrinsic viscosities, their frictional coefficients and the temperature of the system. The stochastic time evolution of the system is given by the occurrence of diffusion events and chemical reaction events. At each time step an event (reaction or diffusion) is selected from a probability distribution of waiting times determined by the intrinsic reaction kinetics and diffusion dynamics. To demonstrate the method the simulation results of the reaction-diffusion system of chaperoneassisted protein folding in cytoplasm are shown.
Abstract: Many footbridges have natural frequencies that
coincide with the dominant frequencies of the pedestrian-induced
load and therefore they have a potential to suffer excessive vibrations
under dynamic loads induced by pedestrians. Some of the design
standards introduce load models for pedestrian loads applicable for
simple structures. Load modeling for more complex structures, on the
other hand, is most often left to the designer. The main focus of this
paper is on the human induced forces transmitted to a footbridge and
on the ways these loads can be modeled to be used in the dynamic
design of footbridges. Also design criteria and load models proposed
by widely used standards were introduced and a comparison was
made. The dynamic analysis of the suspension bridge in Kolin in the
Czech Republic was performed on detailed FEM model using the
ANSYS program system. An attempt to model the load imposed by a
single person and a crowd of pedestrians resulted in displacements
and accelerations that are compared with serviceability criteria.
Abstract: In this paper, we generalize several techniques in
developing Fault Tolerant Software. We introduce property
“Correctness" in evaluating N-version Systems and compare it to
some commonly used properties such as reliability or availability.
We also find out the relation between this property and the number of
versions of system. Our experiments to verify the correctness and the
applicability of the relation are also presented.
Abstract: Based on the feature of model disturbances and uncertainty being compensated dynamically in auto – disturbances-rejection-controller (ADRC), a new method using ADRC is proposed for the decoupling control of dispenser longitudinal movement in big flight envelope. Developed from nonlinear model directly, ADRC is especially suitable for dynamic model that has big disturbances. Furthermore, without changing the structure and parameters of the controller in big flight envelope, this scheme can simplify the design of flight control system. The simulation results in big flight envelope show that the system achieves high dynamic performance, steady state performance and the controller has strong robustness.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel two-phase hybrid optimization algorithm with hybrid genetic operators to solve the optimal control problem of a single stage hybrid manufacturing system. The proposed hybrid real coded genetic algorithm (HRCGA) is developed in such a way that a simple real coded GA acts as a base level search, which makes a quick decision to direct the search towards the optimal region, and a local search method is next employed to do fine tuning. The hybrid genetic operators involved in the proposed algorithm improve both the quality of the solution and convergence speed. The phase–1 uses conventional real coded genetic algorithm (RCGA), while optimisation by direct search and systematic reduction of the size of search region is employed in the phase – 2. A typical numerical example of an optimal control problem with the number of jobs varying from 10 to 50 is included to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm. Several statistical analyses are done to compare the validity of the proposed algorithm with the conventional RCGA and PSO techniques. Hypothesis t – test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test are also carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only improves the quality but also is more efficient in converging to the optimal value faster. They can outperform the conventional real coded GA (RCGA) and the efficient particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm in quality of the optimal solution and also in terms of convergence to the actual optimum value.
Abstract: This paper evaluates performances of an adaptive noise
cancelling (ANC) based target detection algorithm on a set of real test
data supported by the Defense Evaluation Research Agency (DERA
UK) for multi-target wideband active sonar echolocation system. The
hybrid algorithm proposed is a combination of an adaptive ANC
neuro-fuzzy scheme in the first instance and followed by an iterative
optimum target motion estimation (TME) scheme. The neuro-fuzzy
scheme is based on the adaptive noise cancelling concept with the
core processor of ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) to
provide an effective fine tuned signal. The resultant output is then
sent as an input to the optimum TME scheme composed of twogauge
trimmed-mean (TM) levelization, discrete wavelet denoising
(WDeN), and optimal continuous wavelet transform (CWT) for
further denosing and targets identification. Its aim is to recover the
contact signals in an effective and efficient manner and then determine
the Doppler motion (radial range, velocity and acceleration) at very
low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Quantitative results have shown that
the hybrid algorithm have excellent performance in predicting targets-
Doppler motion within various target strength with the maximum
false detection of 1.5%.
Abstract: Recently, a quality of motors is inspected by human
ears. In this paper, I propose two systems using a method of speech
recognition for automation of the inspection. The first system is based
on a method of linear processing which uses K-means and Nearest
Neighbor method, and the second is based on a method of non-linear
processing which uses neural networks. I used motor sounds in these
systems, and I successfully recognize 86.67% of motor sounds in the
linear processing system and 97.78% in the non-linear processing
system.
Abstract: Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a standard
language for modeling of a system. UML is used to visually specify
the structure and behavior of a system. The system requirements are
captured and then converted into UML specification. UML
specification uses a set of rules and notations, and diagrams to
specify the system requirements. In this paper, we present a tool for
developing the UML specification. The tool will ease the use of the
notations and diagrams for UML specification as well as increase the
understanding and familiarity of the UML specification. The tool will
also be able to check the conformance of the diagrams against each
other for basic compliance of UML specification.
Abstract: Decentralized eco-sanitation system is a promising and sustainable mode comparing to the century-old centralized conventional sanitation system. The decentralized concept relies on an environmentally and economically sound management of water, nutrient and energy fluxes. Source-separation systems for urban waste management collect different solid waste and wastewater streams separately to facilitate the recovery of valuable resources from wastewater (energy, nutrients). A resource recovery centre constituted for 20,000 people will act as the functional unit for the treatment of urban waste of a high-density population community, like Singapore. The decentralized system includes urine treatment, faeces and food waste co-digestion, and horticultural waste and organic fraction of municipal solid waste treatment in composting plants. A design model is developed to estimate the input and output in terms of materials and energy. The inputs of urine (yellow water, YW) and faeces (brown water, BW) are calculated by considering the daily mean production of urine and faeces by humans and the water consumption of no-mix vacuum toilet (0.2 and 1 L flushing water for urine and faeces, respectively). The food waste (FW) production is estimated to be 150 g wet weight/person/day. The YW is collected and discharged by gravity into tank. It was found that two days are required for urine hydrolysis and struvite precipitation. The maximum nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) recovery are 150-266 kg/day and 20-70 kg/day, respectively. In contrast, BW and FW are mixed for co-digestion in a thermophilic acidification tank and later a decentralized/centralized methanogenic reactor is used for biogas production. It is determined that 6.16-15.67 m3/h methane is produced which is equivalent to 0.07-0.19 kWh/ca/day. The digestion residues are treated with horticultural waste and organic fraction of municipal waste in co-composting plants.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the application of small
rating Capacitive Energy Storage units for the improvement of
Automatic Generation Control of a multiunit multiarea power
system. Generation Rate Constraints are also considered in the
investigations. Integral Squared Error technique is used to obtain the
optimal integral gain settings by minimizing a quadratic performance
index. Simulation studies reveal that with CES units, the deviations
in area frequencies and inter-area tie-power are considerably
improved in terms of peak deviations and settling time as compared
to that obtained without CES units.
Abstract: This paper presents a time control liquids mixing
system in the tanks as an application of fuzzy time control discrete
model. The system is designed for a wide range of industrial
applications. The simulation design of control system has three
inputs: volume, viscosity, and selection of product, along with the
three external control adjustments for the system calibration or to
take over the control of the system autonomously in local or
distributed environment. There are four controlling elements: rotatory
motor, grinding motor, heating and cooling units, and valves
selection, each with time frame limit. The system consists of three
controlled variables measurement through its sensing mechanism for
feed back control. This design also facilitates the liquids mixing
system to grind certain materials in tanks and mix with fluids under
required temperature controlled environment to achieve certain
viscous level. Design of: fuzzifier, inference engine, rule base,
deffuzifiers, and discrete event control system, is discussed. Time
control fuzzy rules are formulated, applied and tested using
MATLAB simulation for the system.
Abstract: Installation of power compensation equipment in
some cases places additional buses into the system. Therefore, a total
number of power flow equations and voltage unknowns increase due
to additional locations of installed devices. In this circumstance, power flow calculation is more complicated. It may result in a
computational convergence problem. This paper presents a power flow calculation by using Newton-Raphson iterative method together
with the proposed load transfer technique. This concept is to eliminate additional buses by transferring installed loads at the new buses to existing two adjacent buses. Thus, the total number of power
flow equations is not changed. The overall computational speed is
expectedly shorter than that of solving the problem without applying the load transfer technique. A 15-bus test system is employed for test
to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed load transfer technique. As a result, the total number of iteration required and execution time
is significantly reduced.
Abstract: In this study, we experiment on precise control outlet
temperature of water from the water cooler with hot-gas bypass
method based on PI control logic for machine tool. Recently, technical
trend for machine tools is focused on enhancement of speed and
accuracy. High speedy processing causes thermal and structural
deformation of objects from the machine tools. Water cooler has to be
applied to machine tools to reduce the thermal negative influence with
accurate temperature controlling system. The goal of this study is to
minimize temperature error in steady state. In addition, control period
of an electronic expansion valve were considered to increment of
lifetime of the machine tools and quality of product with a water
cooler.
Abstract: New exact three-wave solutions including periodic two-solitary solutions and doubly periodic solitary solutions for the (2+1)-dimensional asymmetric Nizhnik-Novikov- Veselov (ANNV) system are obtained using Hirota's bilinear form and generalized three-wave type of ansatz approach. It is shown that the generalized three-wave method, with the help of symbolic computation, provides an e¤ective and powerful mathematical tool for solving high dimensional nonlinear evolution equations in mathematical physics.
Abstract: The paper presents dynamic programming based model as a planning tool for the maintenance of electric power systems. Every distribution component has an exponential age depending reliability function to model the fault risk. In the moment of time when the fault costs exceed the investment costs of the new component the reinvestment of the component should be made. However, in some cases the overhauling of the old component may be more economical than the reinvestment. The comparison between overhauling and reinvestment is made by optimisation process. The goal of the optimisation process is to find the cost minimising maintenance program for electric power distribution system.
Abstract: The prologue of new High Voltage (HV) transmission
mains into the community necessitates earthing design to ensure
safety compliance of the system. Conductive structures such as steel
or concrete poles are widely used in HV transmission mains. The
earth potential rise (EPR) generated by a fault on these structures
could result to an unsafe condition. This paper discusses information
on the input impedance of the over head earth wire (OHEW) system
for finite and infinite transmission mains. The definition of finite and
infinite system is discussed, maximum EPR due to pole fault. The
simplified equations for EPR assessments are introduced and
discussed for the finite and infinite conditions. A case study is also
shown.
Abstract: Soil chemical and physical properties have important
roles in compartment of the environment and agricultural
sustainability and human health. The objectives of this research is
determination of spatial distribution patterns of Cd, Zn, K, pH, TNV,
organic material and electrical conductivity (EC) in agricultural soils
of Natanz region in Esfehan province. In this study geostatistic and
non-geostatistic methods were used for prediction of spatial
distribution of these parameters. 64 composite soils samples were
taken at 0-20 cm depth. The study area is located in south of
NATANZ agricultural lands with area of 21660 hectares. Spatial
distribution of Cd, Zn, K, pH, TNV, organic material and electrical
conductivity (EC) was determined using geostatistic and geographic
information system. Results showed that Cd, pH, TNV and K data
has normal distribution and Zn, OC and EC data had not normal
distribution. Kriging, Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), Local
Polynomial Interpolation (LPI) and Redial Basis functions (RBF)
methods were used to interpolation. Trend analysis showed that
organic carbon in north-south and east to west did not have trend
while K and TNV had second degree trend. We used some error
measurements include, mean absolute error(MAE), mean squared
error (MSE) and mean biased error(MBE). Ordinary
kriging(exponential model), LPI(Local polynomial interpolation),
RBF(radial basis functions) and IDW methods have been chosen as
the best methods to interpolating of the soil parameters. Prediction
maps by disjunctive kriging was shown that in whole study area was
intensive shortage of organic matter and more than 63.4 percent of
study area had shortage of K amount.
Abstract: Knowledge management is a process taking any steps
that needed to get the most out of available knowledge resources.
KM involved several steps; capturing the knowledge discovering
new knowledge, sharing the knowledge and applied the knowledge in
the decision making process. In applying the knowledge, it is not
necessary for the individual that use the knowledge to comprehend it
as long as the available knowledge is used in guiding the decision
making and actions. When an expert is called and he provides stepby-
step procedure on how to solve the problems to the caller, the
expert is transferring the knowledge or giving direction to the caller.
And the caller is 'applying' the knowledge by following the
instructions given by the expert. An appropriate mechanism is
needed to ensure effective knowledge transfer which in this case is
by telephone or email. The problem with email and telephone is that
the knowledge is not fully circulated and disseminated to all users. In
this paper, with related experience of local university Help Desk, it is
proposed the usage of Information Technology (IT)to effectively
support the knowledge transfer in the organization. The issues
covered include the existing knowledge, the related works, the
methodology used in defining the knowledge management
requirements as well the overview of the prototype.
Abstract: In this study, we explore the use of information for inventory decision in the healthcare organization (HO). We consider the scenario when the HO can make use of the information collected from some correlated products to enhance its inventory planning. Motivated by our real world observations that HOs adopt RFID and bar-coding system for information collection purpose, we examine the effectiveness of these systems for inventory planning with Bayesian information updating. We derive the optimal ordering decision and study the issue of Pareto improvement in the supply chain. Our analysis demonstrates that RFID system will outperform the bar-coding system when the RFID system installation cost and the tag cost reduce to a level that is comparable with that of the barcoding system. We also show how an appropriately set wholesale pricing contract can achieve Pareto improvement in the HO supply chain.
