Abstract: The sanitary sewerage connection rate becomes an
important indicator of advanced cities. Following the construction of
sanitary sewerages, the maintenance and management systems are
required for keeping pipelines and facilities functioning well. These
maintenance tasks often require sewer workers to enter the manholes
and the pipelines, which are confined spaces short of natural
ventilation and full of hazardous substances. Working in sewers could
be easily exposed to a risk of adverse health effects. This paper
proposes the use of Bayesian belief networks (BBN) as a higher level
of noncarcinogenic health risk assessment of sewer workers. On the
basis of the epidemiological studies, the actual hospital attendance
records and expert experiences, the BBN is capable of capturing the
probabilistic relationships between the hazardous substances in sewers
and their adverse health effects, and accordingly inferring the
morbidity and mortality of the adverse health effects. The provision of
the morbidity and mortality rates of the related diseases is more
informative and can alleviate the drawbacks of conventional methods.
Abstract: Trihalomethanes (THMs) were among the first
disinfection byproducts to be discovered in chlorinated water. The
substances form during a reaction between chlorine and organic
matter in the water. Trihalomethanes are suspected to have negative
effects on birth such as, low birth weight, intrauterine growth
retardation in term births, as well as gestational age and preterm
delivery. There are also some evidences showing these by-products to
be mutagenic and carcinogenic, the greatest amount of evidence being
related to the bladder cancer. However, there exist inconsistencies
regarding such effects of THMs as different studies have provided
different results in this regard. The aim of the present study is to
provide a review of the related researches about the above mentioned
health effects of THMs.
Abstract: The amounts of radioactivity in the igneous rocks
have been investigated; samples were collected from the total of eight
basalt rock types in the northeastern of Kurdistan region/Iraq. The
activity concentration of 226Ra (238U) series, 228Ac (232Th) series, 40K
and 137Cs were measured using Planar HPGe and NaI(Tl) detectors.
Along the study area the radium equivalent activities Raeq in Bq/Kg
of samples under investigation were found in the range of 22.16 to
77.31 Bq/Kg with an average value of 44.8 Bq/Kg, this value is much
below the internationally accepted value of 370 Bq/Kg. To estimate
the health effects of this natural radioactive composition, the average
values of absorbed gamma dose rate D (55 nGyh-1), Indoor and
outdoor annual effective dose rates Eied (0.11 mSvy-1) . and Eoed
(0.03 mSvy-1), External hazard index Hex (0.138) and internal hazard
index Hin(0.154), and representative level index Iγr (0.386) have been
calculated and found to be lower than the worldwide average values.
Abstract: The progress of concentrations of particular heavy metals was assessed in chosen localities in region Moravia, the Czech Republic, from 2007 to 2009. Particular metals were observed in localities with various types and characterization of zone. Pb, Ni, As and Cd were emphasized as a result of their toxicity and potential adverse health effect to the exposed population. The progress of metal concentrations and their health effects in the most polluted localities were examined. According to the results, the air pollution limit values were not exceeded. Based on the health risk assessment, the probability of developing tumorous diseases is acceptable, except for the increased probability of cancer risk from long-term exposure to As.
Abstract: Several studies have shown the association between
ambient particulate matter (PM) and adverse health effects and
climate change, thus highlighting the need to limit the anthropogenic
sources of PM. PM Exposure is commonly monitored as mass
concentration of PM10 (particle aerodynamic diameter < 10μm) or
PM2.5 (particle aerodynamic diameter < 2.5μm), although increasing
toxicity with decreasing aerodynamic diameter has been reported due
to increased surface area and enhanced chemical reactivity with other
species. Additionally, the light scattering properties of PM increases
with decreasing size. Hence, it is important to study the chemical
characterization of finer fraction of the particulate matter and to
identify their sources so that they can be controlled appropriately to a
large extent at the sources before reaching to the receptors.
Abstract: The CMLP building was developed to be a model for
sustainability with strategies to reduce water, energy and pollution,
and to provide a healthy environment for the building occupants. The
aim of this paper is to investigate the environmental effects of energy
used by this building. A LCA (life cycle analysis) was led to measure
the real environmental effects produced by the use of energy. The
impact categories most affected by the energy use were found to be
the human health effects, as well as ecotoxicity. Natural gas
extraction, uranium milling for nuclear energy production, and the
blasting for mining and infrastructure construction are the processes
contributing the most to emissions in the human health effect. Data
comparing LCA results of CMLP building with a conventional
building results showed that energy used by the CMLP building has
less damage for the environment and human health than a
conventional building.
Abstract: Auckland has a temperate climate with comfortable warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Auckland house design not only focus on winter thermal performance and indoor thermal condition, but also indoor moisture control, which is closely related to indirect health effects such as dust mites, fungi, etc. Most Auckland houses are designed to use temporary heating for winter indoor thermal comfort. Based on field study data of indoor microclimate conditions of two Auckland townhouses with a whole home mechanical ventilation system or a passive wind directional skylight vent, this study is to evaluate and compare indoor moisture conditions of two insulated townhouses only using temporary heating with different ventilation systems.
