Abstract: With the rapid expansion of city scale and the
excessive concentration of population, achieving relative equality of
extracurricular education resources and improving spatial service
performance of relevant facilities become necessary arduous tasks. In
urban space, extracurricular education facilities should offer better
service to its targeted area and promote the equality and efficiency of
education, which is accomplished by the allocation of facilities. Based
on questionnaire and survey for local students in Hangzhou City in
2009, this study classifies extracurricular education facilities in
meg-city and defines the equalization of these facilities. Then it is
suggested to establish extracurricular education facilities system
according to the development level of city and demands of local
students, and to introduce a spatial analysis method into urban
planning through the aspects of spatial distribution, travel cost and
spatial service scope. Finally, the practice of nine sub-districts of
Hangzhou is studied.
Abstract: In this study, we used a two-stage process and
potassium hydroxide (KOH) to transform waste biomass (rice straw)
into activated carbon and then evaluated the adsorption capacity of the
waste for removing carbofuran from an aqueous solution. Activated
carbon was fast and effective for the removal of carbofuran because of
its high surface area. The native and carbofuran-loaded adsorbents
were characterized by elemental analysis. Different adsorption
parameters, such as the initial carbofuran concentration, contact time,
temperature and pH for carbofuran adsorption, were studied using a
batch system. This study demonstrates that rice straw can be very
effective in the adsorption of carbofuran from bodies of water.
Abstract: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a measure of
the oxygen used in bacteria mediated oxidation of organic substances
in water and wastewater. Theoretically an infinite time is required for
complete biochemical oxidation of organic matter, but the
measurement is made over 5-days at 20 0C or 3-days at 27 0C test
period with or without dilution. Researchers have worked to further
reduce the time of measurement.
The objective of this paper is to review advancement made in
BOD measurement primarily to minimize the time and negate the
measurement difficulties. Survey of literature review in four such
techniques namely BOD-BARTTM, Biosensors, Ferricyanidemediated
approach, luminous bacterial immobilized chip method.
Basic principle, method of determination, data validation and their
advantage and disadvantages have been incorporated of each of the
methods.
In the BOD-BARTTM method the time lag is calculated for the
system to change from oxidative to reductive state. BIOSENSORS
are the biological sensing element with a transducer which produces
a signal proportional to the analyte concentration. Microbial species
has its metabolic deficiencies. Co-immobilization of bacteria using
sol-gel biosensor increases the range of substrate. In ferricyanidemediated
approach, ferricyanide has been used as e-acceptor instead
of oxygen. In Luminous bacterial cells-immobilized chip method,
bacterial bioluminescence which is caused by lux genes was
observed. Physiological responses is measured and correlated to
BOD due to reduction or emission.
There is a scope to further probe into the rapid estimation of BOD.
Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive because of
their excellent chemical durability mechanical strength and electrical
properties. Therefore there is interest in CNTs for not only electrical
and mechanical application, but also biological and medical
application.
In this study, the dispersion power of surfactant-treated multiwalled
carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and their effect on the antibacterial
activity were examined. Surfactant was used sodium
dodecyl-benzenesulfonate (SDBS). UV-vis absorbance and
transmission electron microscopy(TEM) were used to characterize the
dispersion of MWCNTs in the aqueous phase, showing that the
surfactant molecules had been adsorbed onto the MWCNTs surface.
The surfactant-treated MWCNTs exhibited antimicrobial activities
to streptococcus mutans. The optical density growth curves and viable
cell number determined by the plating method suggested that the
antimicrobial activity of surfactant-treated MWCNTs was both
concentration and treatment time-dependent.
Abstract: In the paper we submit the non-local modification of
kinetic Smoluchowski equation for binary aggregation applying to
dispersed media having memory. Our supposition consists in that that
intensity of evolution of clusters is supposed to be a function of the
product of concentrations of the lowest orders clusters at different
moments. The new form of kinetic equation for aggregation is
derived on the base of the transfer kernels approach. This approach
allows considering the influence of relaxation times hierarchy on
kinetics of aggregation process in media with memory.
Abstract: The voltage/current characteristics and the effect of
NO2 gas on the electrical conductivity of a PbPc gas sensor array is
investigated. The gas sensor is manufactured using vacuum
deposition of gold electrodes on sapphire substrate with the leadphathalocyanine
vacuum sublimed on the top of the gold electrodes.
Two versions of the PbPc gas sensor array are investigated. The
tested types differ in the gap sizes between the deposited gold
electrodes. The sensors are tested at different temperatures to account
for conductivity changes as the molecular adsorption/desorption rate
is affected by heat. The obtained results found to be encouraging as
the sensors shoed stability and sensitivity towards low concentration
of applied NO2 gas.
Abstract: Soil microbial activity is adversely affected by pollutants such as heavy metals, antibiotics and pesticides. Organic amendments including sewage sludge, municipal compost and vermicompost are recently used to improve soil structure and fertility. But, these materials contain heavy metals including Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni and Cu that are toxic to soil microorganisms and may lead to occurrence of more tolerant microbes. Among these, Pb is the most abundant and has more negative effect on soil microbial ecology. In this study, Pb levels of 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 mg Pb [as Pb(NO3)2] per kg soil were added to the pots containing 2 kg of a loamy soil and incubated for 6 months at 25°C with soil moisture of - 0.3 MPa. Dehydrogenase activity of soil as a measure of microbial activity was determined on 15, 30, 90 and 180 days after incubation. Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) was used as an electron acceptor in this assay. PICTs (IC50 values) were calculated for each Pb level and incubation time. Soil microbial activity was decreased by increasing Pb level during 30 days of incubation but the induced tolerance appeared on day 90 and thereafter. During 90 to 180 days of incubation, the PICT was gradually developed by increasing Pb level up to 200 mg kg-1, but the rate of enhancement was steeper at higher concentrations.
Abstract: In order to evaluate the relationship between the sulphur (S), glucose (G), nitrogen (N) and plant residues (st), sulphur immobilization and microbial transformation were monitored in five soil samples from 0-30 cm of Bastam farmers fields of Shahrood area following 11 treatments with different levels of Sulphur (S), glucose (G), N and plant residues (wheat straw) in a randomized block design with three replications and incubated over 20, 45 and 60 days, the immobilization of SO4 -2-S presented as a percentage of that added, was inversely related to its addition rate. Additions of glucose and plant residues increased with the C-to-S ratio of the added amendments, irrespective of their origins (glucose and plant residues). In the presence of C sources (glucose or plant residues). N significantly increased the immobilization of SO4 -2-S, whilst the effect of N was insignificant in the absence of a C amendment. In first few days the amounts of added SO4 -2-S immobilized were linearly correlated with the amounts of added S recovered in the soil microbial biomass. With further incubation the proportions of immobilized SO4 -2-S remaining as biomass-S decreased. Decrease in biomass-S was thought to be due to the conversion of biomass-S into soil organic-S. Glucose addition increased the immobilization (microbial utilization and incorporation into the soil organic matter) of native soil SO4 -2-S. However, N addition enhance the mineralization of soil organic-S, increasing the concentration of SO4 - 2-S in soil.
Abstract: This study was set to determine the antimicrobial
activities of brine salting, chlorinated solution, and oil frying
treatments on enteric bacteria and fungi in Rastrineobola argentea
fish from fish landing beaches within L. Victoria basin of western
Kenya. Statistical differences in effectiveness of the different
treatment methods was determined by single factor ANOVA, and
paired two-tail t-Test was performed to compare the differences in
moisture contents before and after storage. Oil fried fish recorded the
lowest microbial loads, sodium chloride at 10% concentration was
the second most effective and chlorinated solution even at 150ppm
was the least effective against the bacteria and fungi in fish. Moisture
contents of the control and treated fish were significantly lower after
storage. These results show that oil frying of fish should be adopted
for processing and preserving Rastrineobola argentea which is the
most abundant and affordable fish species from Lake Victoria.
Abstract: The phase diagrams and compositions of coexisting
phases have been determined for aqueous two-phase systems
containing poly(propylene glycol) with average molecular weight of
425 and sodium citrate at various pH of 3.93, 4.44, 4.6, 4.97, 5.1,
8.22. The effect of pH on the salting-out effect of poly (propylene
glycol) by sodium citrate has been studied. It was found that, an
increasing in pH caused the expansion of two-phase region.
Increasing pH also increases the concentration of PPG in the PPGrich
phase, while the salt-rich phase will be somewhat mole diluted.
Abstract: Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), an avian
paramyxovirus, is a highly contagious, generalised virus disease of
domestic poultry and wild birds characterized by gastro-intestinal,
respiratory and nervous signs. In this study, it was shown that NDV
strain AF2240 and V4-UPM are cytolytic to Human Promyelocytic
Leukemia, HL60 and Human T-lymphoblastic Leukemia, CEM-SS
cells. Results from MTT cytolytic assay showed that CD50 for NDV
AF2240 against HL60 was 130 HAU and NDV V4-UPM against
HL60 and CEM-SS were 110.6 and 150.9 HAU respectively.
Besides, both strains were found to inhibit the proliferation of cells in
a dose dependent manner. The mode of cell death either by apoptosis
or necrosis was further analyzed using acridine orange and propidium
iodide (AO/PI) staining. Our results showed that both NDV strains
induced primarily apoptosis in treated cells at CD50 concentration. In
conclusion, both NDV strains caused cytolytic effects primarily via
apoptosis in leukemia cells.
Abstract: In this study, the dispersed model is used to predict
gas phase concentration, liquid drop concentration. The venturi
scrubber efficiency is calculated by gas phase concentration. The
modified model has been validated with available experimental data
of Johnstone, Field and Tasler for a range of throat gas velocities,
liquid to gas ratios and particle diameters and is used to study the
effect of some design parameters on collection efficiency.
Abstract: The Kowsar dam supply water for different usages
such as drinking, industrial, agricultural and aquaculture farms
usages and located next to the city of Dehdashat in Kohgiluye and
Boyerahmad province in southern Iran. There are some towns and
villages on the Kowsar dam watersheds, which Dehdasht and Choram
are the most important and populated cities in this area. The study
was undertaken to assess the status of water quality in the urban areas
of the Kowsar dam. A total of 28 water samples were collected from
6 stations on surface water and 1 station from groundwater on the
watershed of the Kowsar dam. All the samples were analyzed for Ni
concentration using standard procedures. The results were compared
with other national and international standards. Among the analyzed
samples, as the maximum value of Nickel (0.01 mg/L) was observed
on the station 2 at the autumn 2010, all the samples analyzed were
within the maximum admissible limits by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency, EU, WHO and the Iranian. In
general results of the present study have shown that a Ni mean value
of station No. 2 with 0.006 mg/L is higher than the other stations. Ni
level of all samples and stations have had normal values and this is an
indication of pollution potential and hazards because of human
activity and waste water of towns in the areas, which can effect on
human health implications in future. This research, therefore,
recommends the government and other responsible authorities to take
suitable improving measures in the Kowsar dam watersheds.
Abstract: Methanol-to-olefins (MTO) coupled with
transformation of coal or natural gas to methanol gives an interesting
and promising way to produce ethylene and propylene. To investigate
solid concentration in gas-solid fluidized bed for methanol-to-olefins
process catalyzed by SAPO-34, a cold model experiment system is
established in this paper. The system comprises a gas distributor in a
300mm internal diameter and 5000mm height acrylic column, the
fiber optic probe system and series of cyclones. The experiments are
carried out at ambient conditions and under different superficial gas
velocity ranging from 0.3930m/s to 0.7860m/s and different initial bed
height ranging from 600mm to 1200mm. The effects of radial
distance, axial distance, superficial gas velocity, initial bed height on
solid concentration in the bed are discussed. The effects of distributor
shape and porosity on solid concentration are also discussed. The
time-averaged solid concentration profiles under different conditions
are obtained.
Abstract: In the paper we presented the possibility of application
collagen gels with active principle-s from marine algae extract and chlorhexidine salt in dental medicine. The hydro-alcoholic extracts
from marine algae have been used as they have been obtained. The extracts from marine algae and chlorhexidine salt (digluconate) are
incorporated in type I non-denatured fibrillar collagen matrixes. In order to obtain therapeutic effects at nanostructure level, it is important to know the rheological characteristics of the relevant mixtures of collagen gels and extracts from marine algae selected for use. In this survey we have studied mixtures made of non-denatured
fibrillar collagen hydro-gels where different concentrations of marine
algae have been incorporated. Based on the data obtained for the
shearing tensions, we have traced the rheograms – the diagrams for shearing tensions depending on the shearing speed values – from
which we have calculated the apparent viscosities as ratios between shearing tension and speed values, which have been figured in
relation to the shearing speed values, with a view to levelling
dependency.
Abstract: In this study, the possibility of using potato as a
substrate for glutamic acid production by Brevibacterium linens
was investigated. For preparation of fermentation medium, potato
was hydrolyzed by hydrochloridric acid. The medium contained
potato hydrolysate, tween 80, mineral solution, glucose, and
potassium hydrogen phosphate. The initial pH of the medium was
adjusted to 7-7.5. For achieving the optimum time with maximum
yield, the beakers containing the medium and the inoculums were
incubated in a rotary water bath flask shaker for one to five days.
Thin layer choromatography was used for quantitative and
qualitative assay of the glutamic acid produced. The results
revealed that as fermentation time increased, pH of the
fermentation medium significantly decreased (P
Abstract: Several different cements have been tested to evaluate
their potential to leach calcium, chromium and aluminum ions in soft
water environment. The research allows comparing some different
cements in order to the potential risk of water contamination. This
can be done only in the same environment. To reach the results in
reasonable short time intervals and to make heavy metals
measurements with high accuracy, demineralized water was used. In
this case the conditions of experiments are far away from the water
supply practice, but short time experiments and measurably high
concentrations of elements in the water solution are an important
advantage. Moreover leaching mechanisms can be recognized, our
experiments reported here refer to this kind of cements evaluation.
Abstract: A series of 1-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-3-(substituted phenyl)-2-propen-1-one were allowed to react with hydrazine hydrate and phenyl hydrazine in submitted reactions to get pyrazoline and phenyl pyrazoline derivatives. All the compounds entered for screening at the Tuberculosis Antimicrobial Acquisition and Coordinating Facility (TAACF) for their in vitro antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv strain (ATCC 27294) using Microplate Alamar Blue Assay (MABA) susceptibility test. The results expressed as MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) in μg/mL. Among the fifteen compounds, eight compounds were found to have MIC values less than 10 μg/mL. These were subjected for cytotoxicity assay in VERO cells to determine CC50 (cytotoxic concentration 50%) values and finally SI (Selectivity Index) were calculated. Compound (XV) 2-[5-(4- fluorophenyl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-3-pyrazolyl]-1Hbenzimidazole was considered the best candidate of the series that could be a good starting point to develop new lead compounds in the fight against tuberculosis.
Abstract: Enzymatic hydrolysis of starch from natural sources
finds potential application in commercial production of alcoholic
beverage and bioethanol. In this study the effect of starch
concentration, temperature, time and enzyme concentration were
studied and optimized for hydrolysis of cassava (Manihot esculenta)
starch powder (of mesh 80/120) into glucose syrup by immobilized
(using Polyacrylamide gel) a-amylase using central composite
design. The experimental result on enzymatic hydrolysis of cassava
starch was subjected to multiple linear regression analysis using
MINITAB 14 software. Positive linear effect of starch concentration,
enzyme concentration and time was observed on hydrolysis of
cassava starch by a-amylase. The statistical significance of the model
was validated by F-test for analysis of variance (p < 0.01). The
optimum value of starch concentration temperature, time and enzyme
concentration were found to be 4.5% (w/v), 45oC, 150 min, and 1%
(w/v) enzyme. The maximum glucose yield at optimum condition
was 5.17 mg/mL.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a novel RF LDMOS structure which employs a thin strained silicon layer at the top of the channel and the N-Drift region. The strain is induced by a relaxed Si0.8 Ge0.2 layer which is on top of a compositionally graded SiGe buffer. We explain the underlying physics of the device and compare the proposed device with a conventional LDMOS in terms of energy band diagram and carrier concentration. Numerical simulations of the proposed strained silicon laterally diffused MOS using a 2 dimensional device simulator indicate improvements in saturation and linear transconductance, current drivability, cut off frequency and on resistance. These improvements are however accompanied with a suppression in the break down voltage.
