Abstract: Software crisis refers to the situation in which the developers are not able to complete the projects within time and budget constraints and moreover these overscheduled and over budget projects are of low quality as well. Several methodologies have been adopted form time to time to overcome this situation and now in the focus is component based software engineering. In this approach, emphasis is on reuse of already existing software artifacts. But the results can not be achieved just by preaching the principles; they need to be practiced as well. This paper highlights some of the very basic elements of this approach, which has to be in place to get the desired goals of high quality, low cost with shorter time-to-market software products.
Abstract: Application of pesticides in the paddy fields has
deleterious effects on non-target organisms including cyanobacteria
which are photosynthesizing and nitrogen fixing micro-organisms
contributing significantly towards soil fertility and crop yield.
Pesticide contamination in the paddy fields has manifested into a
serious global environmental concern. To study the effect of one such
pesticide, three cyanobacterial strains; Anabaena fertilissima,
Aulosira fertilissima and Westiellopsis prolifica were selected for
their stress responses to an Organochlorine insecticide - 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
10-hexachloro-1, 5, 5a, 6, 9, 9a-hexahydro-6, 9-methano-2, 4, 3-
benzodioxathiepine-3-oxide, with reference to their photosynthesic
pigments-chlorophyll-a and carotenoids as well as accessory
pigments-phycobiliproteins (phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and
phycoerythrin), stress induced biochemical metabolites like
carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, phenols and enzymes-nitrate
reductase, glutamine synthetase and succinate dehydrogenase. All
the three cyanobacterial strains were adversely affected by the
insecticide doses and inhibition was dose dependent. Reduction in
photosynthetic and accessory pigments, metabolites, nitrogen fixing
and respiratory enzymes of the test organisms were accompanied
with an initial increase in their total protein at lower Organochlorine
doses. On the other hand, increased amount of phenols in all the
insecticide treated concentrations was indicative of stressed activities
of the organisms.
Abstract: Transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) is a basic part of power system planning that determines where, when and how many new transmission lines should be added to the network. Up till now, various methods have been presented to solve the static transmission network expansion planning (STNEP) problem. But in all of these methods, lines adequacy rate has not been considered at the end of planning horizon, i.e., expanded network misses adequacy after some times and needs to be expanded again. In this paper, expansion planning has been implemented by merging lines loading parameter in the STNEP and inserting investment cost into the fitness function constraints using genetic algorithm. Expanded network will possess a maximum adequacy to provide load demand and also the transmission lines overloaded later. Finally, adequacy index could be defined and used to compare some designs that have different investment costs and adequacy rates. In this paper, the proposed idea has been tested on the Garvers network. The results show that the network will possess maximum efficiency economically.
Abstract: Because of its global reach, reduction of time
restraints, and ability to reduce costs and increase sales, use of the
Internet, the World Wide Web (WWW), and related technologies
can be a competitive tool in the arsenal of small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs). Countries the world over are interested in the
successful adoption of the Internet by SMEs. Because a vast
majority of jobs come from that sector, greater financial success of
SMEs translates into greater job growth and, subsequently, higher
tax revenue to the government. This research investigated the level
of Internet usage for business solutions by small and medium
enterprises in Jordan. Through the survey of a random sample of
100 firms with less than 500 employees and from data obtained
from this survey that formed the basis for our study, we found that
a majority of respondents use the Internet in business activities ,
the adoption of the Internet as a business tool is limited to a
brochure where Web site which primarily provides one way. As
such, there wasn't interactive information about the company and
its products and services.
Abstract: New theory for functionally graded (FG) shell based on expansion of the equations of elasticity for functionally graded materials (GFMs) into Legendre polynomials series has been developed. Stress and strain tensors, vectors of displacements, traction and body forces have been expanded into Legendre polynomials series in a thickness coordinate. In the same way functions that describe functionally graded relations has been also expanded. Thereby all equations of elasticity including Hook-s law have been transformed to corresponding equations for Fourier coefficients. Then system of differential equations in term of displacements and boundary conditions for Fourier coefficients has been obtained. Cases of the first and second approximations have been considered in more details. For obtained boundary-value problems solution finite element (FE) has been used of Numerical calculations have been done with Comsol Multiphysics and Matlab.
Abstract: This study discusses the effect of uncertainty on
production levels of a petrochemical complex. Uncertainly or
variations in some model parameters, such as prices, supply and
demand of materials, can affect the optimality or the efficiency of any
chemical process. For any petrochemical complex with many plants,
there are many sources of uncertainty and frequent variations which
require more attention. Many optimization approaches are proposed
in the literature to incorporate uncertainty within the model in order
to obtain a robust solution. In this work, a stability analysis approach
is applied to a deterministic LP model of a petrochemical complex
consists of ten plants to investigate the effect of such variations on
the obtained optimal production levels. The proposed approach can
determinate the allowable variation ranges of some parameters,
mainly objective or RHS coefficients, before the system lose its
optimality. Parameters with relatively narrow range of variations, i.e.
stability limits, are classified as sensitive parameters or constraints
that need accurate estimate or intensive monitoring. These stability
limits offer easy-to-use information to the decision maker and help in
understanding the interaction between some model parameters and
deciding when the system need to be re-optimize. The study shows
that maximum production of ethylene and the prices of intermediate
products are the most sensitive factors that affect the stability of the
optimum solution
Abstract: The purpose of this research study is to investigate the manner in which various loads affect the mechanical properties of the formed mild steel plates. The investigation focuses on examining the cross-sectional area of the metal plate at the centre of the formed mild steel plate. Six mild steel plates were deformed with different loads. The loads applied on the plates had a magnitude of 5 kg, 10 kg, 15 kg, 20 kg, 25 kg and 30 kg. The radius of the punching die was 120 mm and the loads were applied at room temperature. The investigations established that the applied load causes the Vickers microhardness at the cross-sectional area of the plate to increase due to strain hardening. Hence, the percentage increase of the hardness due to the load was found to be directly proportional to the increase in the load. Furthermore, the tensile test results for the parent material showed that the average Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) for the three samples was 308 MPa while the average Yield Strength and Percentage Elongation were 227 MPa and 38 % respectively. Similarly, the UTS of the formed components increased after the deformation of the plate, as such it can be concluded that the forming loads alter the mechanical properties of the materials by improving and strengthening the material properties.
Abstract: Databases have become ubiquitous. Almost all IT applications are storing into and retrieving information from databases. Retrieving information from the database requires knowledge of technical languages such as Structured Query Language (SQL). However majority of the users who interact with the databases do not have a technical background and are intimidated by the idea of using languages such as SQL. This has led to the development of a few Natural Language Database Interfaces (NLDBIs). A NLDBI allows the user to query the database in a natural language. This paper highlights on architecture of new NLDBI system, its implementation and discusses on results obtained. In most of the typical NLDBI systems the natural language statement is converted into an internal representation based on the syntactic and semantic knowledge of the natural language. This representation is then converted into queries using a representation converter. A natural language query is translated to an equivalent SQL query after processing through various stages. The work has been experimented on primitive database queries with certain constraints.
Abstract: MMR vaccine failure had been reported globally and
here we report that it occurs now in India. Samples were collected from clinically suspected mumps cases were subjected for anti
mumps antibodies, virus isolation, RT-PCR, sequencing and
phylogenetic tree analysis. 56 samples collected from men and women belonging to various age groups. 30 had been vaccinated and
the status of 26 patients was unknown. 28 out of 30 samples were
found to be symptomatic and positive for Mumps IgM, indicating
active mumps infection in 93.4% of the vaccinated population. A
phylogenetic tree comparison of the clinical isolate is shown to be genotype C which is distinct from vaccine strain. Our study clearly sending warning signs that MMR vaccine is a failure and it needs to be revamped for the human use by increasing its efficacy and efficiency.
Abstract: In this study, we introduced a communication system
where human body was used as medium through which data were
transferred. Multiple biosignal sensing units were attached to a subject
and wireless personal area network was formed. Data of the sensing
units were shared among them. We used wideband pulse
communication that was simple, low-power consuming and high data
rated. Each unit functioned as independent communication device or
node. A method of channel search and communication among the
modes was developed. A protocol of carrier sense multiple
access/collision detect was implemented in order to avoid data
collision or interferences. Biosignal sensing units should be located at
different locations due to the nature of biosignal origin. Our research
provided a flexibility of collecting data without using electrical wires.
More non-constrained measurement was accomplished which was
more suitable for u-Health monitoring.
Abstract: The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling
Problem (RCPSP) is concerned with single-item or small batch
production where limited resources have to be allocated to dependent
activities over time. Over the past few decades, a lot of work has
been made with the use of optimal solution procedures for this basic
problem type and its extensions. Brucker and Knust[1] discuss, how
timetabling problems can be modeled as a RCPSP. Authors discuss
high school timetabling and university course timetabling problem as
an example. We have formulated two mathematical formulations of
course timetabling problem in a new way which are the prototype of
single-mode RCPSP. Our focus is to show, how course timetabling
problem can be transformed into RCPSP. We solve this
transformation model with genetic algorithm.
Abstract: Multidrug resistant organisms have been taunting the
medical world for the last few decades. Even with new antibiotics
developed, resistant strains have emerged soon after. With the
advancement of nanotechnology, we investigated colloidal silver
nanoparticles for its antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas
aeruginosa. This organism is a multidrug resistant which contributes
to the high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients.
Five multidrug resistant strains were used in this study. The
antimicrobial effect was studied using the disc diffusion and broth
dilution techniques. An inhibition zone of 11 mm was observed with
10 μg dose of the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles exhibited MIC of
50 μg/ml when added at the lag phase and the subinhibitory
concentration was measured as 100 μg/ml. The MIC50 value showed
to be 15 μg/ml. This study suggests that silver nanoparticles can be
further developed as an antimicrobial agent, hence decreasing the
burden of the multidrug resistance phenomena.
Abstract: Two-dimensional finite element model was created in this work to investigate the stresses distribution within rock-like samples with offset open non-persistent joints under biaxial loading. The results of this study have explained the fracture mechanisms observed in tests on rock-like material with open non-persistent offset joints [1]. Finite element code SAP2000 was used to study the stresses distribution within the specimens. Four-nodded isoperimetric plain strain element with two degree of freedom per node, and the three-nodded constant strain triangular element with two degree of freedom per node were used in the present study. The results of the present study explained the formation of wing cracks at the tip of the joints for low confining stress as well as the formation of wing cracks at the middle of the joint for the higher confining stress. High shear stresses found in the numerical study at the tip of the joints explained the formation of secondary cracks at the tip of the joints in the experimental study. The study results coincide with the experimental observations which showed that for bridge inclination of 0o, the coalescence occurred due to shear failure and for bridge inclination of 90o the coalescence occurred due to tensile failure while for the other bridge inclinations coalescence occurred due to mixed tensile and shear failure.
Abstract: Analysis of blood vessel mechanics in normal and
diseased conditions is essential for disease research, medical device
design and treatment planning. In this work, 3D finite element
models of normal vessel and atherosclerotic vessel with 50% plaque
deposition were developed. The developed models were meshed
using finite number of tetrahedral elements. The developed models
were simulated using actual blood pressure signals. Based on the
transient analysis performed on the developed models, the parameters
such as total displacement, strain energy density and entropy per unit
volume were obtained. Further, the obtained parameters were used to
develop artificial neural network models for analyzing normal and
atherosclerotic blood vessels. In this paper, the objectives of the
study, methodology and significant observations are presented.
Abstract: Although oil-based drilling fluids are of paramount practical and economical interest, they represent a serious source of pollution, once released into the environment as drill cuttings. The aim of this study is to assess the capability of isolated microorganisms to degrade gasoil fuel. The commonly used physicochemical and biodegradation remediation techniques of petroleum contaminated soil were both investigated. The study revealed that natural biodegradation is favorable. Even though, the presence of heavy metals, the moisture level of (8.55%) and nutrient deficiencies put severe constrains on microorganisms- survival ranges inhibiting the biodegradation process. The selected strains were able to degrade the diesel fuel at significantly high rates (around 98%).
Abstract: This paper presents a wrap-around view system with 4
smart cameras module and remote motion mobile robot control equipped with smart camera module system. The two-level scheme for
remote motion control with smart-pad(IPAD) is introduced on this
paper. In the low-level, the wrap-around view system is controlled or operated to keep the reference points lying around top view image
plane. On the higher level, a robot image based motion controller is utilized to drive the mobile platform to reach the desired position or
track the desired motion planning through image feature feedback. The
design wrap-around view system equipped on presents such advantages as follows: 1) a satisfactory solution for the FOV and affine
problem; 2) free of any complex and constraint with robot pose. The performance of the wrap-around view equipped on mobile robot
remote control is proven by experimental results.
Abstract: In present communication, we have developed the
suitable constraints for the given the mean codeword length and the
measures of entropy. This development has proved that Renyi-s
entropy gives the minimum value of the log of the harmonic mean
and the log of power mean. We have also developed an important
relation between best 1:1 code and the uniquely decipherable code by
using different measures of entropy.
Abstract: Due to the deregulation of the Electric Supply
Industry and the resulting emergence of electricity market, the
volumes of power purchases are on the rise all over the world. In a
bid to meet the customer-s demand in a reliable and yet economic
manner, utilities purchase power from the energy market over and
above its own production. This paper aims at developing an optimal
power purchase model with two objectives viz economy and
environment ,taking various functional operating constraints such as
branch flow limits, load bus voltage magnitudes limits, unit capacity
constraints and security constraints into consideration. The price of
purchased power being an uncertain variable is modeled using fuzzy
logic. DEMO (Differential Evolution For Multi-objective
Optimization) is used to obtain the pareto-optimal solution set of the
multi-objective problem formulated. Fuzzy set theory has been
employed to extract the best compromise non-dominated solution.
The results obtained on IEEE 30 bus system are presented and
compared with that of NSGAII.
Abstract: A specially designed flat plate was mounted vertically
over the axial line in the wind tunnel of the Aerospace Department of
the Pusan National University. The plate is 2 m long, 0.8 m high and 8
cm thick. The measurements were performed in velocity range from
15 to 60 m/s. A sand paper turbulizer was placed close to the plate nose
to provide fully developed turbulent boundary layer over the most part
of the plate. Strain balances were mounted in the trailing part of the
plate to measure the skin friction drag over removable insertions of
0.55×0.25m2 size. A set of the insertions was designed and
manufactured: 3mm thick polished metal surface and three compliant
surfaces. The compliant surfaces were manufactured of a silicone
rubber Silastic® S2 (Dow Corning company). To modify the
viscoelastic properties of the rubber, its composition was varied: 90%
of the rubber + 10% catalyst (standard), 92.5% + 7.5% (weak), 85% +
15% (strong). Modulus of elasticity and the loss tangent were
measured accurately for these materials in the frequency range from
40 Hz to 3 KHz using the unique proposed technique.
Abstract: A new strain of Type A influenza virus can cause the
transmission of H1N1 virus. This virus can spread between the
people by coughing and sneezing. Because the people are always
movement, so this virus can be easily spread. In this study, we
construct the dynamical network model of H1N1 virus by separating
the human into five groups; susceptible, exposed, infectious,
quarantine and recovered groups. The movement of people between
houses (local level) is considered. The behaviors of solutions to our
dynamical model are shown for the different parameters.
