Abstract: In this study, the effect of mechanical activation on the synthesis of Fe3Al/Al2O3 nanocomposite has been investigated by using mechanochemical method. For this purpose, Aluminum powder and hematite as precursors, with stoichiometric ratio, have been utilized and other effective parameters in milling process were kept constant. Phase formation analysis, crystallite size measurement and lattice strain were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) by using Williamson-Hall method as well as microstructure and morphology were explored by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis was used in order to probe the particle distribution. The results showed that after 30-hour milling, the reaction was started, combustibly done and completed.
Abstract: This study demonstrates the feasibility of joining the commercial pure copper plates by friction stir welding (FSW). Microstructure, microhardness and tensile properties in terms of the joint efficiency were found 94.03 % compare to as receive base material (BM). The average hardness at the top was higher than bottom. Hardness of weld zone was higher than the base material. Different microstructure zones were revealed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The stirred zone (SZ) exhibited primary two phases namely, recrystallized grains and fine precipitates in matrix of copper.
Abstract: The study aimed to investigate characteristics of
vegetative tissue for taxonomic purpose and possibly trend of waste
application in industry. Stems and branches of 15 species in Solanum
found in Thailand were prepared for fiber and examined by light
microscopy. Microstructural characteristic data of fiber i.e. fiber
length and width, fiber lumen diameter and fiber cell wall thickness
were recorded. The longest average fiber cell length (>3.9 mm.) were
obtained in S. lycopersicum L. and S. tuberosum L. Fiber cells from
S. lycopersicum also revealed the widest average diameter of whole
cell and its lumen at >45.5 μm and >29 μm respectively. However
fiber cells with thickest wall of > 9.6 μm were belonged to the
ornamental tree species, S. wrightii Benth. The results showed that
the slenderness ratio, Runkel ratio, and flexibility coefficient, with
potentially suitable for feedstock in paper industry fell in 4 exotic
species, i.e. Solanumamericanum L., S. lycopersicum, S.
seaforthianum Andr., and S. tuberosum L
Abstract: An experimental study is presented on the effect
of microstructural change on the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect
behaviour of Al-2.5%Mg alloy. Tensile tests are performed on
the as received and heat treated (at 400 ºC for 16 hours)
samples for a wide range of strain rates. The serrations
observed in the stress-time curve are investigated from
statistical analysis point of view. Microstructures of the
samples are characterized by optical metallography and X-ray
diffraction. It is found that the excess vacancy generated due
to heat treatment leads to decrease in the strain rate sensitivity
and the increase in the number of stress drop occurrences per
unit time during the PLC effect. The microstructural
parameters like domain size, dislocation density have no
appreciable effect on the PLC effect as far as the statistical
behavior of the serrations is considered.
Abstract: Single crystals of Magnesium alloys such as pure Mg,
Mg-1Zn-0.5Y, Mg-0.1Y, and Mg-0.1Ce alloys were successfully
fabricated in this study by employing the modified Bridgman method.
To determine the exact orientation of crystals, pole figure
measurement using X-ray diffraction were carried out on each single
crystal. Hardness and compression tests were conducted followed by
subsequent recrysatllization annealing. Recrystallization kinetics of
Mg alloy single crystals has been investigated. Fabricated single
crystals were cut into rectangular shaped specimen and solution
treated at 400oC for 24 hrs, and then deformed in compression mode
by 30% reduction. Annealing treatment for recrystallization has been
conducted on these cold-rolled plates at temperatures of 300oC for
various times from 1 to 20 mins. The microstructure observation and
hardness measurement conducted on the recrystallized specimens
revealed that static recrystallization of ternary alloy single crystal was
very slow, while recrystallization behavior of binary alloy single
crystals appeared to be very fast.
Abstract: Friction Stir Welding is a solid state welding technique which can be used to produce sound welds between similar and dissimilar materials. Dissimilar welds which include welds between the different series of aluminium alloys, aluminium to magnesium, steel and titanium has been successfully produced by many researchers. This review covers the work conducted in the above mentioned materials and further concludes by showing the need to fully understand the FSW process in order to expand the latter industrially.
Abstract: Thermally insulating ceramic coatings also known as
thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been essential technologies to
improve the performance and efficiency of advanced gas turbines in
service at extremely high temperatures. The damage mechanisms of
air-plasma sprayed YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBC) with various
microstructures were studied by microscopic techniques after thermal
cycling. The typical degradation of plasma TBCs that occurs during
cyclic furnace testing of an YSZ and alumina coating on a Titanium
alloy are analyzed. During the present investigation the effects of
topcoat thickness, bond coat oxidation, thermal cycle lengths and test
temperature are investigated using thermal cycling. These results
were correlated with stresses measured by a spectroscopic technique
in order to understand specific damage mechanism. The failure
mechanism of former bond coats was found to involve fracture
initiation at the thermally grown oxide (TGO) interface and at the
TGO bond coat interface. The failure mechanism of the YZ was
found to involve combination of fracture along the interface between
TGO and bond coat.
Abstract: Aluminum/Copper clad sheet has been fabricated using
asymmetric extrusion method, which caused severe shear deformation
between Al and Cu plate to easily bond to each other. Interfacial
microstructure and mechanical properties of Al/Cu clad were studied
by scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive
X-ray detector, micro-hardness, and tension tests. The asymmetric
extrusion bonding was very effective to provide a good interface for
atoms diffusion during subsequent annealing. The strength of bonding
was higher with the increasing extrusion ratio.
Abstract: In the Fe-3%Si sheets, grade Hi-B, with AlN and MnS
as inhibitors, the Goss grains which abnormally grow do not have a
size greater than the average size of the primary matrix. In this
heterogeneous microstructure, the size factor is not a required
condition for the secondary recrystallization. The onset of the small
Goss grain abnormal growth appears to be related to a particular
behavior of their grain boundaries, to the local texture and to the
distribution of the inhibitors. The presence and the evolution of
oriented clusters ensure to the small Goss grains a favorable
neighborhood to grow. The modified Monte-Carlo approach, which
is applied, considers the local environment of each grain. The grain
growth is dependent of its real spatial position; the matrix
heterogeneity is then taken into account. The grain growth conditions
are considered in the global matrix and in different matrixes
corresponding to A component clusters. The grain growth behaviour
is considered with introduction of energy only, energy and mobility,
energy and mobility and precipitates.
Abstract: Zinc oxide thin films with various microstructures
were grown on substrates by using HCOOH-sols. The reaction
mechanism of the sol system was investigated by performing an XPS
analysis of as-synthesized films, due to the products of hydrolysis
and condensation in the sol system contributing to the chemical state
of the as-synthesized films. The chemical structures of the assynthesized
films related to the microstructures of the final annealed
films were also studied. The results of the Zn 2p3/2, C 1s and O1s
XPS patterns indicate that the hydrolysis reaction in the sol system is
strongly influenced by the HCOOH agent. The results of XRD and
FE-SEM demonstrated the microstructures of the annealed films are
related to the content of hydrolyzed zinc hydrate (Zn-OH) species
present, and that content of the Zn-OH species in the sol system
increases the HCOOH adding, and these Zn-OH species existing in
the sol phase are responsible for large ZnO crystallites in the final
annealed films.
Abstract: In this article, biomechanical aspects of hen-s eggshell as a natural ceramic structure are studied. The images, taken by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), are used to investigate the microscopic aspects of the egg. It is observed that eggshell has a three-layered microstructure with different morphological and structural characteristics. Studies on the eggshell membrane (ESM) as a prosperous tissue suggest that it is placed to prevent the penetration of microorganisms into the egg. Finally, numerical models of the egg are presented to study the stress distribution and its deformation under different loading conditions. The effects of two different types of loading (hydrostatic and point loadings) on two different shell models (with constant and variable thicknesses) are investigated in detail.
Abstract: We investigated a modified thermal evaporation
method in the growth process of ZnO nanowires. ZnO nanowires
were fabricated on p-type silicon substrates without using a metal
catalyst. A simple horizontal double-tube system along with
chemical vapor diffusion of the precursor was used to grow the ZnO
nanowires. The substrates were placed in different temperature
zones, and ZnO nanowires with different diameters were obtained for
the different substrate temperatures. In addition to the nanowires,
ZnO microdiscs with different diameters were obtained on another
substrate, which was placed at a lower temperature than the other
substrates. The optical properties and crystalline quality of the ZnO
nanowires and microdiscs were characterized by room temperature
photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectrometers. The PL and
Raman studies demonstrated that the ZnO nanowires and microdiscs
grown using such set-up had good crystallinity with excellent optical
properties. Rectifying behavior of ZnO/Si heterostructures was
characterized by a simple DC circuit.
Abstract: Copper based composites reinforced with WC and Ti
particles were prepared using planetary ball-mill. The experiment
was designed by using Taguchi technique and milling was carried out
in an air for several hours. The powder was characterized before and
after milling using the SEM, TEM and X-ray for microstructure and
for possible new phases. Microstructures show that milled particles
size and reduction in particle size depend on many parameters. The
distance d between planes of atoms estimated from X-ray powder
diffraction data and TEM image. X-ray diffraction patterns of the
milled powder did not show clearly any new peak or energy shift, but
the TEM images show a significant change in crystalline structure of
corporate on titanium in the composites.
Abstract: Titanium alloys like Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo (Ti-
6246) are widely used in aerospace applications. Component
manufacturing, however, is difficult and expensive as their
machinability is extremely poor. A thorough understanding of the
chip formation process is needed to improve related metal cutting
operations. In the current study, orthogonal cutting experiments have
been performed and theresulting chips were analyzed by optical
microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.Chips from aTi-
6246ingot were produced at different cutting speeds and cutting
depths. During the experiments, depending of the cutting conditions,
continuous or segmented chips were formed. Narrow, highly
deformed and grain oriented zones, the so-called shear zone,
separated individual segments. Different material properties have
been measured in the shear zones and the segments.
Abstract: Semisolid metal processing uses solid–liquid slurries
containing fine and globular solid particles uniformly distributed in a
liquid matrix, which can be handled as a solid and flow like a liquid.
In the recent years, many methods have been introduced for the
production of semisolid slurries since it is scientifically sound and
industrially viable with such preferred microstructures called
thixotropic microstructures as feedstock materials. One such process
that needs very low equipment investment and running costs is the
cooling slope. In this research by using a mechanical stirrer slurry
maker constructed by the authors, the effects of mechanical stirring
parameters such as: stirring time, stirring temperature and stirring
Speed on micro-structure and mechanical properties of A360
aluminum alloy in semi-solid forming, are investigated. It is
determined that mold temperature and holding time of part in
temperature of 580ºC have a great effect on micro-structure and
mechanical properties(stirring temperature of 585ºC, stirring time of
20 minutes and stirring speed of 425 RPM). By optimizing the
forming parameters, dendrite microstructure changes to globular and
mechanical properties improves. This is because of breaking and
globularzing dendrites of primary α-AL.
Abstract: Swedish truck industry is investigating the possibility
for implementing the use of Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) in their
heavy duty diesel engines. Compared to the alloyed gray iron used
today, CGI has superior mechanical properties but not as good
machinability. Another issue that needs to be addressed when
implementing CGI is the inhomogeneous microstructure when the
cast component has different section thicknesses, as in cylinder
blocks. Thinner sections results in finer pearlite, in the material, with
higher strength. Therefore an investigation on its influence on
machinability was needed. This paper focuses on the effect that
interlamellar distance in pearlite has on CGI machinability and
material physical properties. The effect of pearlite content and
nodularity is also examined. The results showed that interlamellar
distance in pearlite did not have as large effect on the material
physical properties or machinability as pearlite content. The paper
also shows the difficulties of obtaining a homogeneous
microstructure in inhomogeneous workpieces.
Abstract: Ti-6Al-4V alloy has demonstrated a high strength to
weight ratio as well as good properties at high temperature. The
successful application of the alloy in some important areas depends
on suitable joining techniques. Friction welding has many
advantageous features to be chosen for joining Titanium alloys. The
present work investigates the feasibility of producing similar metal
joints of this Titanium alloy by rotary friction welding method. The
joints are produced at three different speeds and the performances of
the welded joints are evaluated by conducting microstructure studies,
Vickers Hardness and tensile tests at the joints. It is found that the
weld joints produced are sound and the ductile fractures in the tensile
weld specimens occur at locations away from the welded joints. It is
also found that a rotational speed of 1500 RPM can produce a very
good weld, with other parameters kept constant.
Abstract: Titanium dioxide coatings were deposited by utilizing
atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) system. The agglomerated nanopowder
and different spraying parameters were used to determine
their influences on the microstructure surface feature and photoabsorption
of the coatings. The microstructure of as-sprayed TiO2
coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Surface characteristics were investigated by Fourier Transform
Infrared (FT-IR). The photo absorption was determined by UV-VIS
spectrophotometer. It is found that the spray parameters have an
influence on the microstructure, surface feature and photo-absorption
of the TiO2 coatings.
Abstract: A simple microstructure optical fiber design based on an octagonal cladding structure is presented for simultaneously controlling dispersion and leakage properties. The finite difference method with anisotropic perfectly matched boundary layer is used to investigate the guiding properties. It is demonstrated that octagonal photonic crystal fibers with four rings can assume negative ultra-flattened dispersion of -19 + 0.23 ps/nm/km in the wavelength range of 1.275 μm to 1.68 μm, nearly zero ultra-flattened dispersion of 0 ± 0.40 ps/nm/km in a 1.38 to 1.64 μm, and low confinement losses less than 10-3 dB/km in the entire band of interest.
Abstract: The compressive strength development through
polymerization process of alkaline solution and fly ash blended with Microwave Incinerated Rice Husk Ash (MIRHA) is described in this
paper. Three curing conditions, which are hot gunny curing, ambient
curing, and external humidity curing are investigated to obtain the suitable curing condition for cast in situ provision. Fly ash was
blended with MIRHA at 3%, 5%, and 7% to identify the effect of blended mixes to the compressive strength and microstructure
properties of geopolymer concrete. Compressive strength results
indicated an improvement in the strength development with external humidity curing concrete samples compared to hot gunny curing and
ambient curing. Blended mixes also presented better performance
than control mixes. Improvement of interfacial transition zone (ITZ)
and micro structure in external humidity concrete samples were also
identified compared to hot gunny and ambient curing.
