Abstract: It has experimentally been proved that the
performance of compression ignition (C.I.) engine is spray
characteristics related. In modern diesel engine the spray formation
and the eventual combustion process are the vital processes that offer
more challenges towards enhancing the engine performance. In the
present work the numerical simulation has been carried out for
evaporating diesel sprays using Fluent software. For computational
fluid dynamics simulation “Meshing” is done using Gambit software
before transmitting it into Fluent. The simulation is carried out using
hot bomb conditions under varying chamber conditions such as gas
pressure, nozzle diameter and fuel injection pressure. For comparison
purpose, the numerical simulations the chamber conditions were kept
the same as that of the experimental data. At varying chamber
conditions the spray penetration rates are compared with the existing
experimental results.
Abstract: Digital image correlation (DIC) is a contactless fullfield
displacement and strain reconstruction technique commonly
used in the field of experimental mechanics. Comparing with
physical measuring devices, such as strain gauges, which only
provide very restricted coverage and are expensive to deploy widely,
the DIC technique provides the result with full-field coverage and
relative high accuracy using an inexpensive and simple experimental
setup. It is very important to study the natural patterns effect on the
DIC technique because the preparation of the artificial patterns is
time consuming and hectic process. The objective of this research is
to study the effect of using images having natural pattern on the
performance of DIC. A systematical simulation method is used to
build simulated deformed images used in DIC. A parameter (subset
size) used in DIC can have an effect on the processing and accuracy
of DIC and even cause DIC to failure. Regarding to the picture
parameters (correlation coefficient), the higher similarity of two
subset can lead the DIC process to fail and make the result more
inaccurate. The pictures with good and bad quality for DIC methods
have been presented and more importantly, it is a systematic way to
evaluate the quality of the picture with natural patterns before they
install the measurement devices.
Abstract: Some regularities of formation of a new structural
state of the thermoplastic polymers - gradually oriented (stretched)
state (GOS) are discussed. Transition into GOS is realized by the
graded oriented stretching - by action of inhomogeneous mechanical
field on the isotropic linear polymers or by zone stretching that is
implemented on a standard tensile-testing machine with using a
specially designed zone stretching device (ZSD). Both technical
approaches (especially zone stretching method) allows to manage the
such quantitative parameters of gradually oriented polymers as a
range of change in relative elongation/orientation degree, length of
this change and profile (linear, hyperbolic, parabolic, logarithmic,
etc.). The possibility of obtaining functionally graded materials
(FGMs) by graded orientation method is briefly discussed. Uniaxial
graded stretching method should be considered as an effective
technological solution to create polymer materials with a
predetermined gradient of physical properties.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel statistical description of
the counterpoise effective length due to lightning surges, where the
(impulse) effective length had been obtained by means of regressive
formulas applied to the transient simulation results. The effective
length is described in terms of a statistical distribution function, from
which median, mean, variance, and other parameters of interest could
be readily obtained. The influence of lightning current amplitude,
lightning front duration, and soil resistivity on the effective length has
been accounted for, assuming statistical nature of these parameters. A
method for determining the optimal counterpoise length, in terms of
the statistical impulse effective length, is also presented. It is based on
estimating the number of dangerous events associated with lightning
strikes. Proposed statistical description and the associated method
provide valuable information which could aid the design engineer in
optimising physical lengths of counterpoises in different grounding
arrangements and soil resistivity situations.
Abstract: Prior to quantifying the variables of the information
model for using school terminology in Croatia's region of Dalmatia
from 1884 to 2014, the most relevant model variables had to be
determined: historical circumstances, standard of living, education
system, linguistic situation, and media. The research findings show
that there was no significant transfer of the 1884 school terms into
1949 usage; likewise, the 1949 school terms were not widely used in
2014. On the other hand, the research revealed that the meaning of
school terms changed over the decades. The quantification of the
variables will serve as the groundwork for creating an information
model for using school terminology in Dalmatia from 1884 to 2014
and for defining direct growth rates in further research.
Abstract: Motion Tracking and Stereo Vision are complicated,
albeit well-understood problems in computer vision. Existing
softwares that combine the two approaches to perform stereo motion
tracking typically employ complicated and computationally expensive
procedures. The purpose of this study is to create a simple and
effective solution capable of combining the two approaches. The
study aims to explore a strategy to combine the two techniques
of two-dimensional motion tracking using Kalman Filter; and depth
detection of object using Stereo Vision. In conventional approaches
objects in the scene of interest are observed using a single camera.
However for Stereo Motion Tracking; the scene of interest is
observed using video feeds from two calibrated cameras. Using two
simultaneous measurements from the two cameras a calculation for
the depth of the object from the plane containing the cameras is made.
The approach attempts to capture the entire three-dimensional spatial
information of each object at the scene and represent it through a
software estimator object. In discrete intervals, the estimator tracks
object motion in the plane parallel to plane containing cameras and
updates the perpendicular distance value of the object from the plane
containing the cameras as depth. The ability to efficiently track
the motion of objects in three-dimensional space using a simplified
approach could prove to be an indispensable tool in a variety of
surveillance scenarios. The approach may find application from high
security surveillance scenes such as premises of bank vaults, prisons
or other detention facilities; to low cost applications in supermarkets
and car parking lots.
Abstract: Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) of
commercial Al-Mg-Si alloy was conducted using two strain rates.
The ECAP processing was conducted at room temperature and at
250°C. Route A was adopted up to a total number of four passes in
the present work. Structural evolution of the aluminum alloy discs
was investigated before and after ECAP processing using optical
microscopy (OM). Following ECAP, simple compression tests and
Vicker’s hardness were performed. OM micrographs showed that, the
average grain size of the as-received Al-Mg-Si disc tends to be larger
than the size of the ECAP processed discs. Moreover, significant
difference in the grain morphologies of the as-received and processed
discs was observed. Intensity of deformation was observed via the
alignment of the Al-Mg-Si consolidated particles (grains) in the
direction of shear, which increased with increasing the number of
passes via ECAP. Increasing the number of passes up to 4 resulted in
increasing the grains aspect ratio up to ~5. It was found that the
pressing temperature has a significant influence on the
microstructure, Hv-values, and compressive strength of the processed
discs. Hardness measurements demonstrated that 1-pass resulted in
increase of Hv-value by 42% compared to that of the as-received
alloy. 4-passes of ECAP processing resulted in additional increase in
the Hv-value. A similar trend was observed for the yield and
compressive strength. Experimental data of the Hv-values
demonstrated that there is a lack of any significant dependence on the
processing strain rate.
Abstract: Reverse Logistics (RL) Network is considered as
complex and dynamic network that involves many stakeholders such
as: suppliers, manufactures, warehouse, retails and costumers, this
complexity is inherent in such process due to lack of perfect
knowledge or conflicting information. Ontologies on the other hand
can be considered as an approach to overcome the problem of sharing
knowledge and communication among the various reverse logistics
partners. In this paper we propose a semantic representation based on
hybrid architecture for building the Ontologies in ascendant way, this
method facilitates the semantic reconciliation between the
heterogeneous information systems that support reverse logistics
processes and product data.
Abstract: Laser beam welding of dissimilar sheet metal
combinations such as Ti/Al, SS/Al and Cu/Al are increasingly
demanded due to high energy densities with less fusion and heat
affected zones. A good weld joint strength involves combinations of
dissimilar metals and the formation of solid solution in the weld pool.
Many metal pairs suffer from significant intermetallic phase
formation during welding which greatly reduces their strength. The
three different sheet metal mentioned above is critically reviewed and
phase diagram for the combinations are given. The aim of this study
is to develop an efficient metal combinations and the influence on
their interfacial characteristics. For that the following parameters
such as weld geometry, residual distortion, micro hardness,
microstructure and mechanical properties are analyzed
systematically.
Abstract: Early pre-code reinforced concrete structures present
undetermined resistance to earthquakes. This situation is particularly
unacceptable in the case of essential structures, such as healthcare
structures and pilgrims' houses. Amongst these, an existing old RC
building in Madinah city (KSA) is seismically evaluated with and
without infill wall and their dynamic characteristics are compared
with measured values in the field using ambient vibration
measurements (AVM). After updating the mathematical models for
this building with the experimental results, three dimensional
pushover analysis (Nonlinear static analysis) was carried out using
commercial structural analysis software incorporating inelastic
material properties for concrete, infill and steel. The purpose of this
analysis is to evaluate the expected performance of structural systems
by estimating, strength and deformation demands in design, and
comparing these demands to available capacities at the performance
levels of interest. The results summarized and discussed.
Abstract: Complexation of anthocyanins to mimic natural
copigmentation process was investigated. Cyanidin-rich extracts from
Zea mays L. ceritina Kulesh. and delphinidin-rich extracts from
Clitoria ternatea L. were used to form 4 anthocyanin complexes,
AC1, AC2, AC3 and AC4, in the presence of several polyphenols and
a trace metal. Characterizations of the ACs were conducted by UV,
FTIR, DSC/TGA and morphological observations. Bathochromic
shifts of the UV spectra of 4 formulas of ACs were observed at peak
wavelengths of about 510-620 nm by 10 nm suggesting complex
formation. FTIR spectra of the ACs indicate shifts of peaks from
1,733 cm-1 to 1,696 cm-1 indicating interactions and a decrease in the
peak areas within the wavenumber of 3,400-3,500 cm-1 indicating
changes in hydrogen bonding. Thermal analysis of all of the ACs
suggests increases in melting temperature after complexation. AC
with the highest melting temperature was morphologically observed
by SEM and TEM to be crystal-like particles within a range of 50 to
200 nm. Particle size analysis of the AC by laser diffraction gave a
range of 50-600 nm, indicating aggregation. This AC was shown to
have no cytotoxic effect on cultured HGEPp0.5 and HGF (all p>
0.05) by MTT. Therefore, complexation of anthocyanins was simple
and self-assembly process, potentially resulting in nanosized particles
of anthocyanin complex.
Abstract: Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) uses the
contents of images to characterize and contact the images. This paper
focus on retrieving the image by separating images into its three color
mechanism R, G and B and for that Discrete Wavelet Transformation
is applied. Then Wavelet based Generalized Gaussian Density (GGD)
is practical which is used for modeling the coefficients from the
wavelet transforms. After that it is agreed to Histogram of Oriented
Gradient (HOG) for extracting its characteristic vectors with Relevant
Feedback technique is used. The performance of this approach is
calculated by exactness and it confirms that this method is wellorganized
for image retrieval.
Abstract: The effect of the inclusion of thyme and rosemary
essential oils into chitosan films, as well as the microbiological and
physical properties when storing chitosan film with and without the
mentioned inclusion was studied. The film forming solution was
prepared by dissolving chitosan (2%, w/v), polysorbate 80 (4% w/w
CH) and glycerol (16% w/w CH) in aqueous lactic acid solutions
(control). The thyme (TEO) and rosemary (REO) essential oils (EOs)
were included 1:1 w/w (EOs:CH) on their combination 50/50
(TEO:REO). The films were stored at temperatures of 5, 20, 33°C
and a relative humidity of 75% during four weeks. The films with
essential oil inclusion did not show an antimicrobial activity against
strains. This behavior could be explained because the chitosan only
inhibits the growth of microorganisms in direct contact with the
active sites. However, the inhibition capacity of TEO was higher than
the REO and a synergic effect between TEO:REO was found for S.
enteritidis strains in the chitosan solution.
Some physical properties were modified by the inclusion of
essential oils. The addition of essential oils does not affect the
mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, puncture
deformation), the water solubility, the swelling index nor the DSC
behavior. However, the essential oil inclusion can significantly
decrease the thickness, the moisture content, and the L* value of
films whereas the b* value increased due to molecular interactions
between the polymeric matrix, the loosing of the structure, and the
chemical modifications. On the other hand, the temperature and time
of storage changed some physical properties on the chitosan films.
This could have occurred because of chemical changes, such as
swelling in the presence of high humidity air and the reacetylation of
amino groups. In the majority of cases, properties such as moisture
content, tensile strength, elongation at break, puncture deformation,
a*, b*, chrome, 7E increased whereas water resistance, swelling
index, L*, and hue angle decreased.
Abstract: To date, one of the few comprehensive indicators for
the measurement of food security is the Global Food Security Index
(GFSI). This index is a dynamic quantitative and qualitative
benchmarking model, constructed from 28 unique indicators, that
measures drivers of food security across both developing and
developed countries. Whereas the GFSI has been calculated across a
set of 109 countries, in this paper we aim to present and compare, for
the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), 1) the Food Security
Index scores achieved and 2) the data available on affordability,
availability, and quality of food. The data for this work was taken
from the latest available report published by the creators of the GFSI,
which in turn used information from national and international
statistical sources. MENA countries rank from place 17/109 (Israel,
although with resent political turmoil this is likely to have changed)
to place 91/109 (Yemen) with household expenditure spent in food
ranging from 15.5% (Israel) to 60% (Egypt). Lower spending on food
as a share of household consumption in most countries and better
food safety net programs in the MENA have contributed to a notable
increase in food affordability. The region has also, however,
experienced a decline in food availability, owing to more limited
food supplies and higher volatility of agricultural production. In
terms of food quality and safety the MENA has the top ranking
country (Israel). The most frequent challenges faced by the countries
of the MENA include public expenditure on agricultural research and
development as well as volatility of agricultural production. Food
security is a complex phenomenon that interacts with many other
indicators of a country’s wellbeing; in the MENA it is slowly but
markedly improving.
Abstract: The transition period of Kosovo society brought
fundamental changes in all the spheres of organizing life. This was
the period when also in the cultural tradition the biggest movement
and an emerging from ‘isolation’ or from the ‘shell’ occurred.
Transformation of the traditional and embracing of the modern began
here. The same was experienced and is currently being experienced
also by Gjakova and its surrounding which is historically renowned
for its great tradition and culture.
The population of this region is actually facing a transition from
the traditional system into the modern one and quite often with huge
leaps.
These ‘movements’ or ‘evolutions’ of the society of this region,
besides the numerous positive things it ‘harvested’, also brought
things that do not at all correspond with their tradition as well as new
criminal occurrences which in the past were not present in this area.
Furthermore, some of the ‘new’ behaviors that are embraced from
other ‘cultures’ and ‘civilizations’, and which are often exceeded, are
quite perturbing. The security situation is also worrying, particularly
following the appearance of some new criminal occurrences.
Therefore, with this research paper we will strive to analyze the
new cultural “intersections” as well as the nature of the origin of
some new very worrying criminal occurrences. We will present there
also some factors inciting into these occurrences, which were
confessed by the persons involved in these criminal occurrences and
who come from this very region.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the assessment of the air
pollution and morbidity relationship in Tunisia. Air pollution is
measured by ozone air concentration and the morbidity is measured
by the number of respiratory-related restricted activity days during
the 2-week period prior to the interview. Socioeconomic data are also
collected in order to adjust for any confounding covariates. Our
sample is composed by 407 Tunisian respondents; 44.7% are women,
the average age is 35.2, near 69% are living in a house built after
1980, and 27.8% have reported at least one day of respiratory-related
restricted activity. The model consists on the regression of the
number of respiratory-related restricted activity days on the air
quality measure and the socioeconomic covariates. In order to correct
for zero-inflation and heterogeneity, we estimate several models
(Poisson, negative binomial, zero inflated Poisson, Poisson hurdle,
negative binomial hurdle and finite mixture Poisson models).
Bootstrapping and post-stratification techniques are used in order to
correct for any sample bias. According to the Akaike information
criteria, the hurdle negative binomial model has the greatest goodness
of fit. The main result indicates that, after adjusting for
socioeconomic data, the ozone concentration increases the probability
of positive number of restricted activity days.
Abstract: In view of a possible application in optical data
storage devices, diffraction grating efficiency of an organic dye, Acid
Fuchsin doped in PMMA matrix was studied under excitation with
CW diode pumped Nd: YAG laser at 532 nm. The open aperture Zscan
of dye doped polymer displayed saturable absorption and the
closed aperture Z-scan of the samples exhibited negative
nonlinearity. The diffraction efficiency of the grating is the ratio of
the intensity of the first order diffracted power to the incident read
beam power. The dye doped polymer films were found to be good
media for recording. It is observed that the formation of gratings
strongly depend on the concentration of dye in the polymer film, the
intensity ratios of the writing beams and the angle between the
writing beams. It has been found that efficient writing can be made at
an angle of 20o and when the intensity ratio of the writing beams is
unity.
Abstract: Recently, increasing the quality of experience (QoE) is
an important issue. Since performance degradation at cell edge
extremely reduces the QoE, several techniques are defined at
LTE/LTE-A standard to remove inter-cell interference (ICI). However,
the conventional techniques have disadvantage because there is a
trade-off between resource allocation and reliable communication.
The proposed scheme reduces the ICI more efficiently by using
channel state information (CSI) smartly. It is shown that the proposed
scheme can reduce the ICI with fewer resources.
Abstract: Given the dynamic nature of the higher education
landscape, induction programmes for new academics has become the
norm nowadays to support academics negotiate these rough terrain.
This study investigates an induction programme for new academics
in a higher education institution to establish what difference it has
made to participants. The findings revealed that the benefits ranged
from creating safe spaces for collaboration and networking to
fostering reflective practice and contributing to the scholarship of
teaching and learning. The study also revealed that some of the
intentions of the programme may not have been achieved, for
example transformative learning. This led to questioning whether this
intention is an appropriate one given the short duration of the
programme and the long, drawn out process of transformation. It may
be concluded that the academic induction programme in this study
serves to sow the seeds for transformative learning through fostering
critically reflective practice. Recommendations for further study
could include long term impact of the programme on student learning
and success, these being the core business of higher education. It is
also recommended that in addition to an induction programme, the
university invests in a mentoring programme for new staff and extend
the support for academics in order to sustain critical reflection and
which may contribute to transformative educational practice.
Abstract: Wireless mesh networking is rapidly gaining in
popularity with a variety of users: from municipalities to enterprises,
from telecom service providers to public safety and military
organizations. This increasing popularity is based on two basic facts:
ease of deployment and increase in network capacity expressed in
bandwidth per footage; WMNs do not rely on any fixed
infrastructure. Many efforts have been used to maximizing
throughput of the network in a multi-channel multi-radio wireless
mesh network. Current approaches are purely based on either static or
dynamic channel allocation approaches. In this paper, we use a
hybrid multichannel multi radio wireless mesh networking
architecture, where static and dynamic interfaces are built in the
nodes. Dynamic Adaptive Channel Allocation protocol (DACA), it
considers optimization for both throughput and delay in the channel
allocation. The assignment of the channel has been allocated to be codependent
with the routing problem in the wireless mesh network and
that should be based on passage flow on every link. Temporal and
spatial relationship rises to re compute the channel assignment every
time when the pattern changes in mesh network, channel assignment
algorithms assign channels in network. In this paper a computing
path which captures the available path bandwidth is the proposed
information and the proficient routing protocol based on the new path
which provides both static and dynamic links. The consistency
property guarantees that each node makes an appropriate packet
forwarding decision and balancing the control usage of the network,
so that a data packet will traverse through the right path.
