Abstract: Multi-loop (De-centralized) Proportional-Integral-
Derivative (PID) controllers have been used extensively in process
industries due to their simple structure for control of multivariable
processes. The objective of this work is to design multiple-model
adaptive multi-loop PID strategy (Multiple Model Adaptive-PID)
and neural network based multi-loop PID strategy (Neural Net
Adaptive-PID) for the control of multivariable system. The first
method combines the output of multiple linear PID controllers,
each describing process dynamics at a specific level of operation.
The global output is an interpolation of the individual multi-loop
PID controller outputs weighted based on the current value of the
measured process variable. In the second method, neural network
is used to calculate the PID controller parameters based on the
scheduling variable that corresponds to major shift in the process
dynamics. The proposed control schemes are simple in structure with
less computational complexity. The effectiveness of the proposed
control schemes have been demonstrated on the CSTR process,
which exhibits dynamic non-linearity.
Abstract: THEOS is the first earth observation spacecraft of Thailand which was launched on the 1st October 2008 and is currently operated by GISTDA. The transfer phase has been performed by Astrium Flight Dynamics team leading to a hand over to GISTDA teams starting mid-October 2008. The THEOS spacecraft-s orbit is LEO and has the same repetitivity (14+5/26) as the SPOT spacecraft, i.e. the same altitude of 822 km but it has a different mean local solar time (LST). Ground track maintenance manoeuvres are performed to maintain the ground track within a predefined control band around the reference ground track and the band is ±40 km for THEOS spacecraft. This paper presents the first ground track maintenance manoeuvre of THEOS spacecraft and the detailed results. In addition, it also includes one and a half year of operation as seen by GISTDA operators. It finally describes the foreseenable activities for the next orbit control manoeuvre (OCM) preparation.
Abstract: Dengue, a disease found in most tropical and
subtropical areas of the world. It has become the most common
arboviral disease of humans. This disease is caused by any of four
serotypes of dengue virus (DEN1-DEN4). In many endemic
countries, the average age of getting dengue infection is shifting
upwards, dengue in pregnancy and infancy are likely to be
encountered more frequently. The dynamics of the disease is studied
by a compartmental model involving ordinary differential equations
for the pregnant, infant human and the vector populations. The
stability of each equilibrium point is given. The epidemic dynamic is
discussed. Moreover, the numerical results are shown for difference
values of dengue antibody.
Abstract: The impact of fixed speed squirrel cage type as well as
variable speed doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) on dynamic
performance of a multimachine power system has been investigated.
Detailed models of the various components have been presented and
the integration of asynchronous and synchronous generators has been
carried out through a rotor angle based transform. Simulation studies
carried out considering the conventional dynamic model of squirrel
cage asynchronous generators show that integration, as such, could
degrade to the AC system performance transiently. This article
proposes a frequency or power controller which can effectively
control the transients and restore normal operation of fixed speed
induction generator quickly. Comparison of simulation results
between classical cage and doubly-fed induction generators indicate
that the doubly fed induction machine is more adaptable to
multimachine AC system. Frequency controller installed in the DFIG
system can also improve its transient profile.
Abstract: A climate dependent model is proposed to simulate
the population of Aedes aegypti mosquito. In developing the model,
average temperature of Shah Alam, Malaysia was used to determine
the development rate of each stage of the life cycle of mosquito.
Rainfall dependent function was proposed to simulate the hatching
rate of the eggs under several assumptions. The proposed transition
matrix was obtained and used to simulate the population of eggs,
larvae, pupae and adults mosquito. It was found that the peak of
mosquito abundance comes during a relatively dry period following a
heavy rainfall. In addition, lag time between the peaks of mosquito
abundance and dengue fever cases in Shah Alam was estimated.
Abstract: Automatic control of the robotic manipulator involves
study of kinematics and dynamics as a major issue. This paper
involves the forward and inverse kinematics of 2-DOF robotic
manipulator with revolute joints. In this study the Denavit-
Hartenberg (D-H) model is used to model robot links and joints. Also
forward and inverse kinematics solution has been achieved using
Artificial Neural Networks for 2-DOF robotic manipulator. It shows
that by using artificial neural network the solution we get is faster,
acceptable and has zero error.
Abstract: In this paper, a methodology of a model based on
predicting the tool forces oblique machining are introduced by
adopting the orthogonal technique. The applied analytical calculation
is mostly based on Devries model and some parts of the methodology
are employed from Amareggo-Brown model. Model validation is
performed by comparing experimental data with the prediction results
on machining titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) based on micro-cutting tool
perspective. Good agreements with the experiments are observed. A
detailed friction form that affected the tool forces also been examined
with reasonable results obtained.
Abstract: In this paper we study a system composed by carbon
nanotube (CNT) and bundle of carbon nanotube (BuCNT) interacting
with a specific fatty acid as molecular probe. Full system is
represented by open nanotube (or nanotubes) and the linoleic acid
(LA) relaxing due the interaction with CNT and BuCNT. The LA has
in his form an asymmetric shape with COOH termination provoking
a close BuCNT interaction mainly by van der Waals force field. The
simulations were performed by classical molecular dynamics with
standard parameterizations.
Our results show that these BuCNT and CNT are dynamically
stable and it shows a preferential interaction position with LA
resulting in three features: (i) when the LA is interacting with CNT
and BuCNT (including both termination, CH2 or COOH), the LA is
repelled; (ii) when the LA terminated with CH2 is closer to open
extremity of BuCNT, the LA is also repelled by the interaction
between them; and (iii) when the LA terminated with COOH is
closer to open extremity of BuCNT, the LA is encapsulated by the
BuCNT. These simulations are part of a more extensive work on
searching efficient selective molecular devices and could be useful to
reach this goal.
Abstract: The fluid mechanics principle is used extensively in
designing axial flow fans and their associated equipment. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of air flow
distribution from a radiator axial flow fan used in an acid pump truck Tier4 (APT T4) Repower. This axial flow fan augments the transfer
of heat from the engine mounted on the APT T4.
CFD analysis was performed for an area weighted average static pressure difference at the inlet and outlet of the fan. Pressure contours, velocity vectors, and path lines were plotted for detailing
the flow characteristics for different orientations of the fan blade. The results were then compared and verified against known theoretical observations and actual experimental data. This study
shows that a CFD simulation can be very useful for predicting and understanding the flow distribution from a radiator fan for further
research work.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyze the
performance of a double-sided axial flux permanent magnet
brushless DC (AFPM BLDC) motor with two-phase winding.
To study the motor operation, a mathematical dynamic model
has been proposed for motor, which became the basis for
simulations that were performed using MATLAB/SIMULINK
software package. The results of simulations were presented
in form of the waveforms of selected quantities and the
electromechanical characteristics performed by the motor. The
calculation results show that the two-phase motor version
develops smooth torque and reaches high efficiency. The twophase
motor can be applied where more smooth torque is
required. Finally a study on the influence of switching angle
on motor performance shows that when advance switching
technique is used, the motor operates with the highest
efficiency.
Abstract: In this paper, an authentication system using keystroke dynamics is presented. We introduced pressure sensing for the improvement of the accuracy of measurement and durability against intrusion using key-logger, and so on, however additional instrument is needed. As the result, it has been found that the pressure sensing is also effective for estimation of real moment of keystroke.
Abstract: As wireless sensor networks are energy constraint networks
so energy efficiency of sensor nodes is the main design issue.
Clustering of nodes is an energy efficient approach. It prolongs the
lifetime of wireless sensor networks by avoiding long distance communication.
Clustering algorithms operate in rounds. Performance of
clustering algorithm depends upon the round time. A large round
time consumes more energy of cluster heads while a small round
time causes frequent re-clustering. So existing clustering algorithms
apply a trade off to round time and calculate it from the initial
parameters of networks. But it is not appropriate to use initial
parameters based round time value throughout the network lifetime
because wireless sensor networks are dynamic in nature (nodes can be
added to the network or some nodes go out of energy). In this paper
a variable round time approach is proposed that calculates round
time depending upon the number of active nodes remaining in the
field. The proposed approach makes the clustering algorithm adaptive
to network dynamics. For simulation the approach is implemented
with LEACH in NS-2 and the results show that there is 6% increase
in network lifetime, 7% increase in 50% node death time and 5%
improvement over the data units gathered at the base station.
Abstract: This paper presents the exergy analysis of a
desalination unit using humidification-dehumidification process.
Here, this unit is considered as a thermal system with three main
components, which are the heating unit by using a solar collector, the
evaporator or the humidifier, and the condenser or the dehumidifier.
In these components the exergy is a measure of the quality or grade
of energy and it can be destroyed in them. According to the second
law of thermodynamics this destroyed part is due to irreversibilities
which must be determined to obtain the exergetic efficiency of the
system.
In the current paper a computer program has been developed using
visual basic to determine the exergy destruction and the exergetic
efficiencies of the components of the desalination unit at variable
operation conditions such as feed water temperature, outlet air
temperature, air to feed water mass ratio and salinity, in addition to
cooling water mass flow rate and inlet temperature, as well as
quantity of solar irradiance.
The results obtained indicate that the exergy efficiency of the
humidifier increases by increasing the mass ratio and decreasing the
outlet air temperature. In the other hand the exergy efficiency of the
condenser increases with the increase of this ratio and also with the
increase of the outlet air temperature.
Abstract: A full six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) flight dynamics
model is proposed for the accurate prediction of short and long-range
trajectories of high spin and fin-stabilized projectiles via atmospheric
flight to final impact point. The projectiles is assumed to be both rigid
(non-flexible), and rotationally symmetric about its spin axis launched
at low and high pitch angles. The mathematical model is based on the
full equations of motion set up in the no-roll body reference frame and
is integrated numerically from given initial conditions at the firing
site. The projectiles maneuvering motion depends on the most
significant force and moment variations, in addition to wind and
gravity. The computational flight analysis takes into consideration the
Mach number and total angle of attack effects by means of the
variable aerodynamic coefficients. For the purposes of the present
work, linear interpolation has been applied from the tabulated database
of McCoy-s book. The developed computational method gives
satisfactory agreement with published data of verified experiments and
computational codes on atmospheric projectile trajectory analysis for
various initial firing flight conditions.
Abstract: The radiative exchange method is introduced as a
numerical method for the simulation of radiative heat transfer in an
absorbing, emitting and isotropically scattering media. In this
method, the integro-differential radiative balance equation is solved
by using a new introduced concept for the exchange factor. Even
though the radiative source term is calculated in a mesh structure that
is coarser than the structure used in computational fluid dynamics,
calculating the exchange factor between different coarse elements by
using differential integration elements makes the result of the method
close to that of integro-differential radiative equation. A set of
equations for calculating exchange factors in two and threedimensional
Cartesian coordinate system is presented, and the
method is used in the simulation of radiative heat transfer in twodimensional
rectangular case and a three-dimensional simple cube.
The result of using this method in simulating different cases is
verified by comparing them with those of using other numerical
radiative models.
Abstract: A numerical study on the influence of electroosmotic flow on analyte preconcentration by isotachophoresis ( ITP) is made. We consider that the double layer induced electroosmotic flow ( EOF) counterbalance the electrophoretic velocity and a stationary ITP stacked zones results. We solve the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Nernst-Planck equations to determine the local convective velocity and the preconcentration dynamics of ions. Our numerical algorithm is based on a finite volume method along with a secondorder upwind scheme. The present numerical algorithm can capture the the sharp boundaries of step-changes ( plateau mode) or zones of steep gradients ( peak mode) accurately. The convection of ions due to EOF reduces the resolution of the ITP transition zones and produces a dispersion in analyte zones. The role of the electrokinetic parameters which induces dispersion is analyzed. A one-dimensional model for the area-averaged concentrations based on the Taylor-Aristype effective diffusivity is found to be in good agreement with the computed solutions.
Abstract: The effects of different parameters on the
hydrodynamics of trickle bed reactors were discussed for Newtonian
and non-Newtonian foaming systems. The varying parameters are
varying liquid velocities, gas flow velocities and surface tension. The
range for gas velocity is particularly large, thanks to the use of dense
gas to simulate very high pressure conditions. This data bank has
been used to compare the prediction accuracy of the different
trendlines and transition points from the literature. More than 240
experimental points for the trickle flow (GCF) and foaming pulsing
flow (PF/FPF) regime were obtained for present study.
Hydrodynamic characteristics involving dynamic liquid saturation
significantly influenced by gas and liquid flow rates. For 15 and 30
ppm air-aqueous surfactant solutions, dynamic liquid saturation
decreases with higher liquid and gas flow rates considerably in high
interaction regime. With decrease in surface tension i.e. for 45 and 60
ppm air-aqueous surfactant systems, effect was more pronounced
with decreases dynamic liquid saturation very sharply during regime
transition significantly at both low liquid and gas flow rates.
Abstract: In recent years, tuned mass damper (TMD) control systems for civil engineering structures have attracted considerable attention. This paper emphasizes on the application of particle swarm application (PSO) to design and optimize the parameters of the TMD control scheme for achieving the best results in the reduction of the building response under earthquake excitations. The Integral of the Time multiplied Absolute value of the Error (ITAE) based on relative displacement of all floors in the building is taken as a performance index of the optimization criterion. The problem of robustly TMD controller design is formatted as an optimization problem based on the ITAE performance index to be solved using the PSO technique which has a story ability to find the most optimistic results. An 11- story realistic building, located in the city of Rasht, Iran is considered as a test system to demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed method. The results analysis through the time-domain simulation and some performance indices reveals that the designed PSO based TMD controller has an excellent capability in reduction of the seismically excited example building.
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce GODYS-PC software
package for modeling, simulating and analyzing dynamic systems.
To illustrate the use of GODYS-PC we present a few examples
which concern modeling and simulating of engineering systems. In
order to compare GODYS-PC with widely used in academia and
industry Simulink®, the same examples are provided both in
GODYS-PC and Simulink®.
Abstract: Controlled release urea has become popular in agricultural industry as it helps to solve environmental issues and increase crop yield. Recently biomass was identified to replace the polymer used as a coating material in the conventional coated urea. In this paper spreading and contact angle of biomass droplet (lignin, cellulose and clay) on urea surface are investigated experimentally. There were two tests were conducted, sessile drop for contact angle measurement and pendant drop for contact angle measurement. A different concentration of biomass droplet was released from 30 mm above a substrate. Glass was used as a controlled substrate. Images were recorded as soon as the droplet impacted onto the urea before completely adsorb into the urea. Digitized droplets were then used to identify the droplet-s surface tension and contact angle. There is large difference observed between the low surface tension and high surface tension liquids, where the wetting and spreading diameter is higher for lower surface tension. From the contact angle results, the data showed that the biomass coating films were possible as wetting liquid (θ < 90º). Contact angle of biomass coating material gives good indication for the wettablity of a liquid on urea surface.
