Abstract: This paper studies the dependability of componentbased
applications, especially embedded ones, from the diagnosis
point of view. The principle of the diagnosis technique is to
implement inter-component tests in order to detect and locate the
faulty components without redundancy. The proposed approach for
diagnosing faulty components consists of two main aspects. The first
one concerns the execution of the inter-component tests which
requires integrating test functionality within a component. This is the
subject of this paper. The second one is the diagnosis process itself
which consists of the analysis of inter-component test results to
determine the fault-state of the whole system. Advantage of this
diagnosis method when compared to classical redundancy faulttolerant
techniques are application autonomy, cost-effectiveness and
better usage of system resources. Such advantage is very important
for many systems and especially for embedded ones.
Abstract: In this paper, an automated algorithm to estimate and remove the continuous baseline from measured spectra containing both continuous and discontinuous bands is proposed. The algorithm uses previous information contained in a Continuous Database Spectra (CDBS) to obtain a linear basis, with minimum number of sampled vectors, capable of representing a continuous baseline. The proposed algorithm was tested by using a CDBS of flame spectra where Principal Components Analysis and Non-negative Matrix Factorization were used to obtain linear bases. Thus, the radical emissions of natural gas, oil and bio-oil flames spectra at different combustion conditions were obtained. In order to validate the performance in the baseline estimation process, the Goodness-of-fit Coefficient and the Root Mean-squared Error quality metrics were evaluated between the estimated and the real spectra in absence of discontinuous emission. The achieved results make the proposed method a key element in the development of automatic monitoring processes strategies involving discontinuous spectral bands.
Abstract: Many applications require surface modification and
micro-structuring of polymers. For these purposes is mainly used
ultraviolet (UV) radiation from excimer lamps or excimer lasers.
However, these sources have a decided disadvantage - degrading the
polymer deep inside due to relatively big radiation penetration depth
which may exceed 100 μm. In contrast, extreme ultraviolet (EUV)
radiation is absorbed in a layer approximately 100 nm thick only. In
this work, the radiation from a discharge-plasma EUV source (with
wavelength 46.9 nm) based on a capillary discharge driver is focused
with a spherical Si/Sc multilayer mirror for surface modification of
PMMA sample or thin gold layer (thickness about 40 nm). It was
found that the focused EUV laser beam is capable by one shot to
ablate PMMA or layer of gold, even if the focus is significantly
influenced by astigmatism.
Abstract: A long-term campaign for monitoring the
concentration of atmospheric Particulate Matter (PM) was conducted
at multiple sites located in the center and suburbs of the Tokyo
Metropolitan Area in Japan. The concentration of fine PM has shown a
declining trend over the last two decades. A positive matrix
factorization model elucidated that the contribution of combustion
sources was drastically reduced. In Japan, the regulations on vehicle
exhaust emissions were phased in and gradually tightened over the last
two decades, which has triggered a notable reduction in PM emissions
from automobiles and has contributed to the mitigation of the problem
of fine PM pollution.
Abstract: This project focuses on the development of a line
follower algorithm for a Two Wheels Balancing Robot. In this
project, ATMEGA32 is chosen as the brain board controller to react
towards the data received from Balance Processor Chip on the
balance board to monitor the changes of the environment through
two infra-red distance sensor to solve the inclination angle problem.
Hence, the system will immediately restore to the set point (balance
position) through the implementation of internal PID algorithms at
the balance board. Application of infra-red light sensors with the PID
control is vital, in order to develop a smooth line follower robot. As a
result of combination between line follower program and internal self
balancing algorithms, we are able to develop a dynamically
stabilized balancing robot with line follower function.
Abstract: This paper deals with a portfolio selection problem
based on the possibility theory under the assumption that the returns
of assets are LR-type fuzzy numbers. A possibilistic portfolio model
with transaction costs is proposed, in which the possibilistic mean
value of the return is termed measure of investment return, and the
possibilistic variance of the return is termed measure of investment
risk. Due to considering transaction costs, the existing traditional
optimization algorithms usually fail to find the optimal solution
efficiently and heuristic algorithms can be the best method. Therefore,
a particle swarm optimization is designed to solve the corresponding
optimization problem. At last, a numerical example is given to
illustrate our proposed effective means and approaches.
Abstract: The desulfurization of coal using biological methods is an emerging technology. The biodesulfurization process uses the catalytic activity of chemolithotrophic acidpohiles in removing sulfur and pyrite from the coal. The present study was undertaken to examine the potential of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in removing the pyritic sulfur and iron from high iron and sulfur containing US coal. The experiment was undertaken in 10 L batch stirred tank reactor having 10% pulp density of coal. The reactor was operated under mesophilic conditions and aerobic conditions were maintained by sparging the air into the reactor. After 35 days of experiment, about 64% of pyrite and 21% of pyritic sulfur was removed from the coal. The findings of the present study indicate that the biodesulfurization process does have potential in treating the high pyrite and sulfur containing coal. A good mass balance was also obtained with net loss of about 5% showing its feasibility for large scale application.

Abstract: Network on Chip (NoC) has emerged as a promising
on chip communication infrastructure. Three Dimensional Integrate
Circuit (3D IC) provides small interconnection length between layers
and the interconnect scalability in the third dimension, which can
further improve the performance of NoC. Therefore, in this paper,
a hierarchical cluster-based interconnect architecture is merged with
the 3D IC. This interconnect architecture significantly reduces the
number of long wires. Since this architecture only has approximately
a quarter of routers in 3D mesh-based architecture, the average
number of hops is smaller, which leads to lower latency and higher
throughput. Moreover, smaller number of routers decreases the area
overhead. Meanwhile, some dual links are inserted into the bottlenecks
of communication to improve the performance of NoC.
Simulation results demonstrate our theoretical analysis and show the
advantages of our proposed architecture in latency, throughput and
area, when compared with 3D mesh-based architecture.
Abstract: Coordinated supply chain represents major challenges
for the different actors involved in it, because each agent responds to
individual interests. The paper presents a framework with the
reviewed literature regarding the system's decision structure and
nature of demand. Later, it characterizes an agri food supply chain in
the Central Region of Colombia, it responds to a decentralized
distribution system and a stochastic demand. Finally, the paper
recommends coordinating the chain based on shared information, and
mechanisms for each agent, as VMI (vendor-managed inventory)
strategy for farmer-buyer relationship, information system for
farmers and contracts for transportation service providers.
Abstract: Considering payload, reliability, security and operational lifetime as major constraints in transmission of images we put forward in this paper a steganographic technique implemented at the physical layer. We suggest transmission of Halftoned images (payload constraint) in wireless sensor networks to reduce the amount of transmitted data. For low power and interference limited applications Turbo codes provide suitable reliability. Ensuring security is one of the highest priorities in many sensor networks. The Turbo Code structure apart from providing forward error correction can be utilized to provide for encryption. We first consider the Halftoned image and then the method of embedding a block of data (called secret) in this Halftoned image during the turbo encoding process is presented. The small modifications required at the turbo decoder end to extract the embedded data are presented next. The implementation complexity and the degradation of the BER (bit error rate) in the Turbo based stego system are analyzed. Using some of the entropy based crypt analytic techniques we show that the strength of our Turbo based stego system approaches that found in the OTPs (one time pad).
Abstract: The storage of chemical fertilizers in concrete building often leads to durability problems due to chemical attack. The damage of concrete is mostly caused by certain ammonium salts. The main purpose of the research is to investigate the durability properties of concrete being exposed to ammonium nitrate solution. In this investigation, experiments are conducted on concrete type G50 and G60. The leaching process is achieved by the use of 20% concentration solution of ammonium nitrate. The durability properties investigated are water absorption, volume of permeable voids, and sorptivity. Compressive strength, pH value, and degradation depth are measured after a certain period of leaching. A decrease in compressive strength and an increase in porosity are found through the conducted experiments. Apart from that, the experimental data shows that pH value decreases with increased leaching time while the degradation depth of concrete increases with leaching time. By comparing concrete type G50 and G60, concrete type G60 is more resistant to ammonium nitrate attack.
Abstract: Many single or multispan arch bridges are
strengthened with the addition of some kind of structural support
between adjacent arches of multispan or beside the arch barrel of a
single span to increase the strength of the overall structure. It was
traditionally formed by either placing loose rubble masonry blocks
between the arches and beside the arches or using mortar or concrete
to construct a more substantial structural bond between the spans. On
the other hand backing materials are present in some existing bridges.
Existing arch assessment procedures generally ignore the effects of
backing materials. In this paper an investigation of the effects of
backing on ratings for masonry arch bridges is carried out. It is
observed that increasing the overall lateral stability of the arch
system through the inclusion of structural backing results in an
enhanced failure load by reducing the likelihood of any tension
occurring at the top of the arch.
Abstract: Powder of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-α (LSCO) was synthesized
by a combined citrate-EDTA method. The as-synthesized LSCO
powder was calcined, respectively at temperatures of 800, 900 and
1000 °C with different heating/cooling rates which are 2, 5, 10 and
15 °C min-1. The effects of heat treatments on the phase formation of
perovskite phase of LSCO were investigated by powder X-ray
diffraction (XRD). The XRD patterns revealed that the rate of
5 °C min-1 is the optimum heating/cooling rate to obtain a single
perovskite phase of LSCO with calcination temperature of 800 °C.
This result was confirmed by a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as
it showed a complete decomposition of intermediate compounds to
form oxide material was also observed at 800 °C.
Abstract: A robust wheel slip controller for electric vehicles is
introduced. The proposed wheel slip controller exploits the dynamics
of electric traction drives and conventional hydraulic brakes for
achieving maximum energy efficiency and driving safety. Due to
the control of single wheel traction motors in combination with a
hydraulic braking system, it can be shown, that energy recuperation
and vehicle stability control can be realized simultaneously. The
derivation of a sliding mode wheel slip controller accessing two
drivetrain actuators is outlined and a comparison to a conventionally
braked vehicle is shown by means of simulation.
Abstract: The stone is a constituent part of the geological
structure of the Territory, introducing himself as a subject that has always interconnected human and environment in the development of a discourse of meanings and symbols that reflect elements realized in
different cultures and experiences.
This action meant that the first settlements and their areas of influence gained importance in the field of humanization and spatial
organization of the territory, not only for the appropriation that its
inhabitants did, but mainly because the community regardless of their
economic or social condition, used it as living space and cultural integration.
These factors become decisive in the characterization of the
landscape area in the northwest of Portugal, because the stone is a
material that appears not only in the natural landscape, but is also a strong element in humanized landscape, becoming this relation the
main characterization of the study area.
Abstract: Petri Net (PN) has proven to be effective graphical, mathematical, simulation, and control tool for Discrete Event Systems (DES). But, with the growth in the complexity of modern industrial, and communication systems, PN found themselves inadequate to address the problems of uncertainty, and imprecision in data. This gave rise to amalgamation of Fuzzy logic with Petri nets and a new tool emerged with the name of Fuzzy Petri Nets (FPN). Although there had been a lot of research done on FPN and a number of their applications have been anticipated, but their basic types and structure are still ambiguous. Therefore, in this research, an effort is made to categorize FPN according to their structure and algorithms Further, literature review of the applications of FPN in the light of their classifications has been done.
Abstract: In a travelling wave thermoacoustic device, the
regenerator sandwiched between a pair of (hot and cold) heat
exchangers constitutes the so-called thermoacoustic core, where the
thermoacoustic energy conversion from heat to acoustic power takes
place. The temperature gradient along the regenerator caused by the
two heat exchangers excites and maintains the acoustic wave in the
resonator. The devices are called travelling wave thermoacoustic
systems because the phase angle difference between the pressure and
velocity oscillation is close to zero in the regenerator. This paper
presents the construction and testing of a thermoacoustic engine
equipped with a ceramic regenerator, made from a ceramic material
that is usually used as catalyst substrate in vehicles- exhaust systems,
with fine square channels (900 cells per square inch). The testing
includes the onset temperature difference (minimum temperature
difference required to start the acoustic oscillation in an engine), the
acoustic power output, thermal efficiency and the temperature profile
along the regenerator.
Abstract: The adaptive power control of Code Division Multiple
Access (CDMA) communications using Remote Radio Head
(RRH) between multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with
a link-budget based Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR) estimate is
applied to four inner loop power control algorithms. It is concluded
that Base Station (BS) can calculate not only UAV distance using
linearity between speed and Consecutive Transmit-Power-Control
Ratio (CTR) of Adaptive Step-size Closed Loop Power Control (ASCLPC),
Consecutive TPC Ratio Step-size Closed Loop Power Control
(CS-CLPC), Fixed Step-size Power Control (FSPC), but also UAV
position with Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) ratio of
RRHs.
Abstract: The problem of ranking (rank regression) has become popular in the machine learning community. This theory relates to problems, in which one has to predict (guess) the order between objects on the basis of vectors describing their observed features. In many ranking algorithms a convex loss function is used instead of the 0-1 loss. It makes these procedures computationally efficient. Hence, convex risk minimizers and their statistical properties are investigated in this paper. Fast rates of convergence are obtained under conditions, that look similarly to the ones from the classification theory. Methods used in this paper come from the theory of U-processes as well as empirical processes.
