Abstract: Consumer demand for products with low fat or sugar content and low levels of food additives, as well as cost factors, make exopolysaccharides (EPS) a viable alternative. EPS remain an interesting tool to modulate the sensory properties of yoghurt. This study was designed to evaluate EPS production potential of commercial yoghurt starter cultures (Yo-Flex starters: Harmony 1.0, TWIST 1.0 and YF-L902, Chr.Hansen, Denmark) and their influence on an apparent viscosity of yoghurt samples. The production of intracellularly synthesized EPS by different commercial yoghurt starters varies roughly from 144,08 to 440,81 mg/l. Analysing starters’ producing EPS, they showed large variations in concentration and supposedly composition. TWIST 1.0 had produced greater amounts of EPS in MRS medium and in yoghurt samples but there wasn’t determined significant contribution to development of texture as well as an apparent viscosity of the final product. YF-L902 and Harmony 1.0 starters differed considerably in EPS yields, but not in apparent viscosities (p>0.05) of the final yoghurts. Correlation between EPS concentration and viscosity of yoghurt samples was not established in the study.
Abstract: Spent petroleum catalyst from Korean petrochemical
industry contains trace amount of metals such as Ni, V and Mo.
Therefore an attempt was made to recover those trace metal using
bioleaching process. Different leaching parameters such as Fe(II)
concentration, pulp density, pH, temperature and particle size of
spent catalyst particle were studied to evaluate their effects on the
leaching efficiency. All the three metal ions like Ni, V and Mo
followed dual kinetics, i.e., initial faster followed by slower rate. The
percentage of leaching efficiency of Ni and V were higher than Mo.
The leaching process followed a diffusion controlled model and the
product layer was observed to be impervious due to formation of
ammonium jarosite (NH4)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6. In addition, the lower
leaching efficiency of Mo was observed due to a hydrophobic coating
of elemental sulfur over Mo matrix in the spent catalyst.
Abstract: Human-related information security breaches within organizations are primarily caused by employees who have not been made aware of the importance of protecting the information they work with. Information security awareness is accordingly attracting more attention from industry, because stakeholders are held accountable for the information with which they work. The authors developed an Information Security Retrieval and Awareness model – entitled “ISRA" – that is tailored specifically towards enhancing information security awareness in industry amongst all users of information, to address shortcomings in existing information security awareness models. This paper is principally aimed at expounding a prototype for the ISRA model to highlight the advantages of utilizing the model. The prototype will focus on the non-technical, humanrelated information security issues in industry. The prototype will ensure that all stakeholders in an organization are part of an information security awareness process, and that these stakeholders are able to retrieve specific information related to information security issues relevant to their job category, preventing them from being overburdened with redundant information.
Abstract: The concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in atmospheric aerosol samples collected at a rural site in Hungary (K-puszta, summer 2008), a boreal forest (Hyytiälä,
April 2007) and a polluted rural area in Italy (San Pietro Capofiume, Po Valley, April 2008). A clear distinction between “clean" and “polluted" periods was observed. Concentrations obtained for Hyytiälä are significantly lower than those for the other two sites. Source reconciliation was performed using diagnostic parameters, such as the carbon preference index and ratios between PAH. The presence of an unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons, especially for the Finnish and Italian samples, is indicative of petrogenic inputs. In K-puszta, the aliphatic hydrocarbons are dominated by leaf wax n-alkanes. The long range transport of anthropogenic pollution contributed to the Finnish aerosol. Industrial activities and vehicular emissions represent major sources in San Pietro Capofiume. PAH in K-puszta consist of both pyrogenic and petrogenic compounds.
Abstract: This paper proposes a novel frequency offset (FO) estimator for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. Simplicity is most significant feature of this algorithm and can be repeated to achieve acceptable accuracy. Also fractional and integer part of FO is estimated jointly with use of the same algorithm. To do so, instead of using conventional algorithms that usually use correlation function, we use DFT of received signal. Therefore, complexity will be reduced and we can do synchronization procedure by the same hardware that is used to demodulate OFDM symbol. Finally, computer simulation shows that the accuracy of this method is better than other conventional methods.
Abstract: This paper presents a wrap-around view system with 4
smart cameras module and remote motion mobile robot control equipped with smart camera module system. The two-level scheme for
remote motion control with smart-pad(IPAD) is introduced on this
paper. In the low-level, the wrap-around view system is controlled or operated to keep the reference points lying around top view image
plane. On the higher level, a robot image based motion controller is utilized to drive the mobile platform to reach the desired position or
track the desired motion planning through image feature feedback. The
design wrap-around view system equipped on presents such advantages as follows: 1) a satisfactory solution for the FOV and affine
problem; 2) free of any complex and constraint with robot pose. The performance of the wrap-around view equipped on mobile robot
remote control is proven by experimental results.
Abstract: Due to the environmental and price issues of current
energy crisis, scientists and technologists around the globe are
intensively searching for new environmentally less-impact form of
clean energy that will reduce the high dependency on fossil fuel.
Particularly hydrogen can be produced from biomass via thermochemical
processes including pyrolysis and gasification due to the
economic advantage and can be further enhanced through in-situ
carbon dioxide removal using calcium oxide. This work focuses on
the synthesis and development of the flowsheet for the enhanced
biomass gasification process in PETRONAS-s iCON process
simulation software. This hydrogen prediction model is conducted at
operating temperature between 600 to 1000oC at atmospheric
pressure. Effects of temperature, steam-to-biomass ratio and
adsorbent-to-biomass ratio were studied and 0.85 mol fraction of
hydrogen is predicted in the product gas. Comparisons of the results
are also made with experimental data from literature. The
preliminary economic potential of developed system is RM 12.57 x
106 which equivalent to USD 3.77 x 106 annually shows economic
viability of this process.
Abstract: Clustering large populations is an important problem
when the data contain noise and different shapes. A good clustering
algorithm or approach should be efficient enough to detect clusters
sensitively. Besides space complexity, time complexity also gains
importance as the size grows. Using hierarchies we developed a new
algorithm to split attributes according to the values they have and
choosing the dimension for splitting so as to divide the database
roughly into equal parts as much as possible. At each node we
calculate some certain descriptive statistical features of the data
which reside and by pruning we generate the natural clusters with a
complexity of O(n).
Abstract: Information regarding early onset neonatal sepsis
(EONS) pathogens may vary between regions. Global perspectives
showed Group B Streptococcal (GBS) as the most common causative
pathogens, but the widespread use of intrapartum antibiotics has
changed the pathogens pattern towards gram negative
microorganisms, especially E. coli. Objective of this study is to
describe the pathogens isolated, to assess current treatment and risk
of EONS. Records of 899 neonates born in three General Hospitals
between 2009 until 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Proven was
found in 22 (3%) neonates. The majority was isolated with gram
positive organisms, 17 (2.3%). All grams positive and most gram
negative organisms showed sensitivity to the tested antibiotics. Only
two rare gram negative organisms showed total resistant. Male was
possible risk of proven EONS. Although proven EONS remains
uncommon in Malaysia, nonetheless, the effect of intrapartum
antibiotics still required continuous surveillance.
Abstract: In a world worried about water resources with the
shadow of drought and famine looming all around, the quality of
water is as important as its quantity. The source of all concerns is the
constant reduction of per capita quality water for different uses.
Iran With an average annual precipitation of 250 mm compared to
the 800 mm world average, Iran is considered a water scarce country
and the disparity in the rainfall distribution, the limitations of
renewable resources and the population concentration in the margins
of desert and water scarce areas have intensified the problem.
The shortage of per capita renewable freshwater and its poor
quality in large areas of the country, which have saline, brackish or
hard water resources, and the profusion of natural and artificial
pollutant have caused the deterioration of water quality.
Among methods of treatment and use of these waters one can refer
to the application of membrane technologies, which have come into
focus in recent years due to their great advantages. This process is
quite efficient in eliminating multi-capacity ions; and due to the
possibilities of production at different capacities, application as
treatment process in points of use, and the need for less energy in
comparison to Reverse Osmosis processes, it can revolutionize the
water and wastewater sector in years to come. The article studied the
different capacities of water resources in the Persian Gulf and Oman
Sea watershed basins, and processes the possibility of using
nanofiltration process to treat brackish and non-conventional waters
in these basins.
Abstract: This paper attempts to establish the fact that Multi
State Network Classification is essential for performance
enhancement of Transport protocols over Satellite based Networks. A
model to classify Multi State network condition taking into
consideration both congestion and channel error is evolved. In order
to arrive at such a model an analysis of the impact of congestion and
channel error on RTT values has been carried out using ns2. The
analysis results are also reported in the paper. The inference drawn
from this analysis is used to develop a novel statistical RTT based
model for multi state network classification.
An Adaptive Multi State Proactive Transport Protocol consisting
of Proactive Slow Start, State based Error Recovery, Timeout Action
and Proactive Reduction is proposed which uses the multi state
network state classification model. This paper also confirms through
detail simulation and analysis that a prior knowledge about the
overall characteristics of the network helps in enhancing the
performance of the protocol over satellite channel which is
significantly affected due to channel noise and congestion.
The necessary augmentation of ns2 simulator is done for
simulating the multi state network classification logic. This
simulation has been used in detail evaluation of the protocol under
varied levels of congestion and channel noise. The performance
enhancement of this protocol with reference to established protocols
namely TCP SACK and Vegas has been discussed. The results as
discussed in this paper clearly reveal that the proposed protocol
always outperforms its peers and show a significant improvement in
very high error conditions as envisaged in the design of the protocol.
Abstract: This paper illustrates the use of a combined neural
network model for classification of electrocardiogram (ECG) beats.
We present a trainable neural network ensemble approach to develop
customized electrocardiogram beat classifier in an effort to further
improve the performance of ECG processing and to offer
individualized health care.
We process a three stage technique for detection of premature
ventricular contraction (PVC) from normal beats and other heart
diseases. This method includes a denoising, a feature extraction and a
classification. At first we investigate the application of stationary
wavelet transform (SWT) for noise reduction of the
electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Then feature extraction module
extracts 10 ECG morphological features and one timing interval
feature. Then a number of multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) neural
networks with different topologies are designed.
The performance of the different combination methods as well as
the efficiency of the whole system is presented. Among them,
Stacked Generalization as a proposed trainable combined neural
network model possesses the highest recognition rate of around 95%.
Therefore, this network proves to be a suitable candidate in ECG
signal diagnosis systems. ECG samples attributing to the different
ECG beat types were extracted from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia
database for the study.
Abstract: Daily production of information and importance of the sequence of produced data in forecasting future performance of market causes analysis of data behavior to become a problem of analyzing time series. But time series that are very complicated, usually are random and as a result their changes considered being unpredictable. While these series might be products of a deterministic dynamical and nonlinear process (chaotic) and as a result be predictable. Point of Chaotic theory view, complicated systems have only chaotically face and as a result they seem to be unregulated and random, but it is possible that they abide by a specified math formula. In this article, with regard to test of strange attractor and biggest Lyapunov exponent probability of chaos on several foreign exchange rates vs. IRR (Iranian Rial) has been investigated. Results show that data in this market have complex chaotic behavior with big degree of freedom.
Abstract: In this paper, the C1-conforming finite element method is analyzed for a class of nonlinear fourth-order hyperbolic partial differential equation. Some a priori bounds are derived using Lyapunov functional, and existence, uniqueness and regularity for the weak solutions are proved. Optimal error estimates are derived for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes.
Abstract: A new algorithm called Character-Comparison to Character-Access (CCCA) is developed to test the effect of both: 1) converting character-comparison and number-comparison into character-access and 2) the starting point of checking on the performance of the checking operation in string searching. An experiment is performed using both English text and DNA text with different sizes. The results are compared with five algorithms, namely, Naive, BM, Inf_Suf_Pref, Raita, and Cycle. With the CCCA algorithm, the results suggest that the evaluation criteria of the average number of total comparisons are improved up to 35%. Furthermore, the results suggest that the clock time required by the other algorithms is improved in range from 22.13% to 42.33% by the new CCCA algorithm.
Abstract: The clustering ensembles combine multiple partitions
generated by different clustering algorithms into a single clustering
solution. Clustering ensembles have emerged as a prominent method
for improving robustness, stability and accuracy of unsupervised
classification solutions. So far, many contributions have been done to
find consensus clustering. One of the major problems in clustering
ensembles is the consensus function. In this paper, firstly, we
introduce clustering ensembles, representation of multiple partitions,
its challenges and present taxonomy of combination algorithms.
Secondly, we describe consensus functions in clustering ensembles
including Hypergraph partitioning, Voting approach, Mutual
information, Co-association based functions and Finite mixture
model, and next explain their advantages, disadvantages and
computational complexity. Finally, we compare the characteristics of
clustering ensembles algorithms such as computational complexity,
robustness, simplicity and accuracy on different datasets in previous
techniques.
Abstract: Fixed-bed slow pyrolysis experiments of rice husk
have been conducted to determine the effect of pyrolysis
temperature, heating rate, particle size and reactor length on the
pyrolysis product yields. Pyrolysis experiments were performed at
pyrolysis temperature between 400 and 600°C with a constant
heating rate of 60°C/min and particle sizes of 0.60-1.18 mm. The
optimum process conditions for maximum liquid yield from the rice
husk pyrolysis in a fixed bed reactor were also identified. The highest
liquid yield was obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 500°C,
particle size of
1.18-1.80 mm, with a heating rate of 60°C/min in a 300 mm length
reactor. The obtained yield of, liquid, gas and solid were found be in
the range of 22.57-31.78 %, 27.75-42.26 % and 34.17-42.52 % (all
weight basics) respectively at different pyrolysis conditions. The
results indicate that the effects of pyrolysis temperature and particle
size on the pyrolysis yield are more significant than that of heating
rate and reactor length. The functional groups and chemical
compositions present in the liquid obtained at optimum conditions
were identified by Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy
and Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS) analysis
respectively.
Abstract: A specially designed flat plate was mounted vertically
over the axial line in the wind tunnel of the Aerospace Department of
the Pusan National University. The plate is 2 m long, 0.8 m high and 8
cm thick. The measurements were performed in velocity range from
15 to 60 m/s. A sand paper turbulizer was placed close to the plate nose
to provide fully developed turbulent boundary layer over the most part
of the plate. Strain balances were mounted in the trailing part of the
plate to measure the skin friction drag over removable insertions of
0.55×0.25m2 size. A set of the insertions was designed and
manufactured: 3mm thick polished metal surface and three compliant
surfaces. The compliant surfaces were manufactured of a silicone
rubber Silastic® S2 (Dow Corning company). To modify the
viscoelastic properties of the rubber, its composition was varied: 90%
of the rubber + 10% catalyst (standard), 92.5% + 7.5% (weak), 85% +
15% (strong). Modulus of elasticity and the loss tangent were
measured accurately for these materials in the frequency range from
40 Hz to 3 KHz using the unique proposed technique.
Abstract: Clustering is a very well known technique in data mining. One of the most widely used clustering techniques is the kmeans algorithm. Solutions obtained from this technique depend on the initialization of cluster centers and the final solution converges to local minima. In order to overcome K-means algorithm shortcomings, this paper proposes a hybrid evolutionary algorithm based on the combination of PSO, SA and K-means algorithms, called PSO-SA-K, which can find better cluster partition. The performance is evaluated through several benchmark data sets. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms previous approaches, such as PSO, SA and K-means for partitional clustering problem.
Abstract: This work concerns the topological optimization
problem for determining the optimal petroleum refinery
configuration. We are interested in further investigating and
hopefully advancing the existing optimization approaches and
strategies employing logic propositions to conceptual process
synthesis problems. In particular, we seek to contribute to this
increasingly exciting area of chemical process modeling by
addressing the following potentially important issues: (a) how the
formulation of design specifications in a mixed-logical-and-integer
optimization model can be employed in a synthesis problem to enrich
the problem representation by incorporating past design experience,
engineering knowledge, and heuristics; and (b) how structural
specifications on the interconnectivity relationships by space (states)
and by function (tasks) in a superstructure should be properly
formulated within a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)
model. The proposed modeling technique is illustrated on a case
study involving the alternative processing routes of naphtha, in which
significant improvement in the solution quality is obtained.
