Abstract: A study was conducted to formally characterize
notebook computer performance under various environmental and
usage conditions. Software was developed to collect data from the
operating system of the computer. An experiment was conducted to
evaluate the performance parameters- variations, trends, and
correlations, as well as the extreme value they can attain in various
usage and environmental conditions. An automated software script
was written to simulate user activity. The variability of each
performance parameter was addressed by establishing the empirical
relationship between performance parameters. These equations were
presented as baseline estimates for performance parameters, which
can be used to detect system deviations from normal operation and
for prognostic assessment. The effect of environmental factors,
including different power sources, ambient temperatures, humidity,
and usage, on performance parameters of notebooks was studied.
Abstract: A word recognition architecture based on a network
of neural associative memories and hidden Markov models has been
developed. The input stream, composed of subword-units like wordinternal
triphones consisting of diphones and triphones, is provided
to the network of neural associative memories by hidden Markov
models. The word recognition network derives words from this input
stream. The architecture has the ability to handle ambiguities on
subword-unit level and is also able to add new words to the
vocabulary during performance. The architecture is implemented to
perform the word recognition task in a language processing system
for understanding simple command sentences like “bot show apple".
Abstract: Reno-pin contact test is a method that is controlled by
DC motor used to characterize electronic chips. This method is used in
electronic and telecommunication devices. A new electric
performance testing system is developed in which the testing method
is controlled by using Piezoelectric Transducer (PZT) instead of DC
motor which reduces vibration and noise. The vertical displacement of
the Reno-pin is very short in the Reno-pin contact testing system. Now
using a flexible guide in the new Reno-pin contact system, the vertical
movement of the Reno-pin is increased many times of the existing
Reno-pin contact testing method using DC motor. Using the present
electric performance testing system with a flexible hinge and PZT
instead of DC motor, manufacturing of electronic chips are able to
characterize chips with low cost and high speed.

Abstract: A biocompatible ferrofluid have been prepared by coprecipitation
of FeCl2.4H2O and FeCl3.6H2O under ultrasonic
irradiation and with NaOH as alkaline agent. Cystein was also used
as capping agent in the solution. Magnetic properties of the produced
ferrofluid were then determined by VSM test and magnetite
nanoparticles were characterized by XRD and TEM techniques. The
effect of surfactant to Fe ion weight ratio was also studied during this
project by using two different amount of Dextran. Results showed the
presence of a biocompatible superparamagnetic ferrofluid including
magnetite nanoparticles with particle size ranging under 20 nm. The
increase in the surfactant content results in the narrowing of the size
distribution and reduction of the particle size and more solution
stability.
Abstract: Automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) systems are available for all CT manufacturers and are used for the majority of patients. Understanding how the systems work and their influence on patient dose and image quality is important for CT users, in order to gain the most effective use of the systems. In the present study, a new phantom was used for evaluating dose distribution and image quality under the ATCM operation for the Toshiba Aquilion 64 CT scanner using different ATCM options and a fixed mAs technique. A routine chest, abdomen and pelvis (CAP) protocol was selected for study and Gafchromic film was used to measure entrance surface dose (ESD), peripheral dose and central axis dose in the phantom. The results show the dose reductions achievable with various ATCM options, in relation with the target noise. The doses and image noise distribution were more uniform when the ATCM system was implemented compared with the fixed mAs technique. The lower limit set for the tube current will affect the modulations especially for the lower dose option. This limit prevented the tube current being reduced further and therefore the lower dose ATCM setting resembled a fixed mAs technique. Selection of a lower tube current limit is likely to reduce doses for smaller patients in scans of chest and neck regions.
Abstract: The motivation for adaptive modulation and coding is
to adjust the method of transmission to ensure that the maximum
efficiency is achieved over the link at all times. The receiver
estimates the channel quality and reports it back to the transmitter.
The transmitter then maps the reported quality into a link mode. This
mapping however, is not a one-to-one mapping. In this paper we
investigate a method for selecting the proper modulation scheme.
This method can dynamically adapt the mapping of the Signal-to-
Noise Ratio (SNR) into a link mode. It enables the use of the right
modulation scheme irrespective of changes in the channel conditions
by incorporating errors in the received data. We propose a Markov
model for this method, and use it to derive the average switching
thresholds and the average throughput. We show that the average
throughput of this method outperforms the conventional threshold
method.
Abstract: This paper proposes a location-aware system for
household robots which allows users to paste predefined paper tags at
different locations according to users- comprehension of the house. In this system a household robot may be aware of its location and the
attributes thereof by visually recognizing the tags when the robot is moving. This paper also presents a novel user interface to define a
moving path of the robot, which allows users to draw the path in the air
with a finger so as to generate commands for following motions.
Abstract: The approaches to make an agent generate intelligent actions in the AI field might be roughly categorized into two ways–the classical planning and situated action system. It is well known that each system have its own strength and weakness. However, each system also has its own application field. In particular, most of situated action systems do not directly deal with the logical problem. This paper first briefly mentions the novel action generator to situatedly extract a set of actions, which is likely to help to achieve the goal at the current situation in the relaxed logical space. After performing the action set, the agent should recognize the situation for deciding the next likely action set. However, since the extracted action is an approximation of the action which helps to achieve the goal, the agent could be caught into the deadlock of the problem. This paper proposes the newly developed hybrid architecture to solve the problem, which combines the novel situated action generator with the conventional planner. The empirical result in some planning domains shows that the quality of the resultant path to the goal is mostly acceptable as well as deriving the fast response time, and suggests the correlation between the structure of problems and the organization of each system which generates the action.
Abstract: This paper presents the mathematical model and
control strategy on DQ frame of shunt active power filter. The
structure of the shunt active power filter is the voltage source inverter
(VSI). The pulse width modulation (PWM) with PI controller is used
in the paper. The concept of DQ frame to apply with the shunt active
power filter is described. Moreover, the detail of the PI controller
design for two current loops and one voltage loop are fully explained.
The DQ axis with Fourier (DQF) method is applied to calculate the
reference currents on DQ frame. The simulation results show that the
control strategy and the design method presented in the paper can
provide the good performance of the shunt active power filter.
Moreover, the %THD of the source currents after compensation can
follow the IEEE Std.519-1992.
Abstract: Vickers indentation is used to measure the hardness
of materials. In this study, numerical simulation of Vickers
indentation experiment was performed for Diamond like Carbon
(DLC) coated materials. DLC coatings were deposited on stainless
steel 304 substrates with Chromium buffer layer using RF Magnetron
and T-shape Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc Dual system The
objective of this research is to understand the elastic plastic
properties, stress strain distribution, ring and lateral crack growth and
propagation, penetration depth of indenter and delamination of
coating from substrate with effect of buffer layer thickness. The
effect of Poisson-s ratio of DLC coating was also analyzed. Indenter
penetration is more in coated materials with thin buffer layer as
compared to thicker one, under same conditions. Similarly, the
specimens with thinner buffer layer failed quickly due to high
residual stress as compared to the coated materials with reasonable
thickness of 200nm buffer layer. The simulation results suggested the
optimized thickness of 200 nm among the prepared specimens for
durable and long service.
Abstract: The present work deals with analyses of the effects
of bearing curvature and non-Newtonian characteristics on the load capacity of an exponential rectangular squeeze film bearing using
Bingham fluids as lubricants. Bingham fluids are characterized by an
yield value and hence the formation of a “rigid" core in the region
between the plates is justified. The flow is confined to the region
between the core and the plates. The shape of the core has been
identified through numerical means. Further, numerical solutions for
the pressure distribution and load carrying capacity of the bearing
for various values of Bingham number and curvature parameter have
been obtained. The effects of bearing curvature and non-Newtonian
characteristics of the lubricant on the bearing performances have been
discussed.
Abstract: This article is focused on the calculation of heat
radiation intensity and its optimization on an aluminum mould
surface. The inside of the mould is sprinkled with a special powder
and its outside is heated by infra heaters located above the mould
surface, up to a temperature of 250°C. By this way artificial leathers
in the car industry are produced (e. g. the artificial leather on a car
dashboard). A mathematical model of heat radiation of infra heaters
on a mould surface is described in this paper. This model allows us to
calculate a heat-intensity radiation on the mould surface for the
concrete location of infra heaters above the mould surface. It is
necessary to ensure approximately the same heat intensity radiation
on the mould surface by finding a suitable location for the infra
heaters, and in this way the same material structure and color of
artificial leather. In the model we have used a genetic algorithm to
optimize the radiation intensity on the mould surface. Experimental
measured values for the heat radiation intensity by a sensor in the
surroundings of an infra heater are used for the calculation
procedures. A computational procedure was programmed in language
Matlab.
Abstract: This paper aims to study at the use of local knowledge
to develop community self-protection in flood prone residential area,
Ayutthaya Island has been chosen as a case study. This study tries to
examine the strength of local knowledge which is able to develop
community self-protection and cope with flood disaster. In-depth, this
paper focuses on the influence of social network on knowledge
transfer. After conducted the research, authors reviewed the strength
of local knowledge and also mentioned the obstacles of community to
use and also transfer local knowledge. Moreover, the result of the
study revealed that local knowledge is not always transferred by the
strongest-tie social network (family or kinship) as we used to believe.
Surprisingly, local knowledge could be also transferred by the
weaker-tie social network (teacher/ monk) with the better
effectiveness in some knowledge.
Abstract: Distributed Power generation has gained a lot of
attention in recent times due to constraints associated with
conventional power generation and new advancements in DG
technologies .The need to operate the power system economically
and with optimum levels of reliability has further led to an increase
in interest in Distributed Generation. However it is important to place
Distributed Generator on an optimum location so that the purpose of
loss minimization and voltage regulation is dully served on the
feeder. This paper investigates the impact of DG units installation on
electric losses, reliability and voltage profile of distribution networks.
In this paper, our aim would be to find optimal distributed
generation allocation for loss reduction subjected to constraint of
voltage regulation in distribution network. The system is further
analyzed for increased levels of Reliability. Distributed Generator
offers the additional advantage of increase in reliability levels as
suggested by the improvements in various reliability indices such as
SAIDI, CAIDI and AENS. Comparative studies are performed and
related results are addressed. An analytical technique is used in order
to find the optimal location of Distributed Generator. The suggested
technique is programmed under MATLAB software. The results
clearly indicate that DG can reduce the electrical line loss while
simultaneously improving the reliability of the system.
Abstract: Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker-s yeast) can exhibit
sustained oscillations during the operation in a continuous bioreactor
that adversely affects its stability and productivity. Because of
heterogeneous nature of cell populations, the cell population balance
models can be used to capture the dynamic behavior of such cultures.
In this paper an unstructured, segregated model is used which is
based on population balance equation(PBE) and then in order to
simulation, the 4th order Rung-Kutta is used for time dimension and
three methods, finite difference, orthogonal collocation on finite
elements and Galerkin finite element are used for discretization of the
cell mass domain. The results indicate that the orthogonal collocation
on finite element not only is able to predict the oscillating behavior of
the cell culture but also needs much little time for calculations.
Therefore this method is preferred in comparison with other methods.
In the next step two controllers, a globally linearizing control (GLC)
and a conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller are designed
for controlling the total cell mass per unit volume, and performances
of these controllers are compared through simulation. The results
show that although the PI controller has simpler structure, the GLC
has better performance.
Abstract: Bone growth factors, such as Bone Morphogenic
Protein-2 (BMP-2) have been approved by the FDA to replace grafting for some surgical interventions, but the high dose requirement limits its use in patients. Noggin, an extracellular protein, blocks the effect of BMP-2 by binding to BMP. Preventing
the BMP-2/noggin interaction will help increase the free
concentration of BMP-2 and therefore should enhance its efficacy to
induce bone formation. The work presented here involves
computational design of novel small molecule inhibitory agents of BMP-2/noggin interaction, based on our current understanding of
BMP-2, and its known putative ligands (receptors and antagonists). A
successful acquisition of such an inhibitory agent of BMP-2/noggin interaction would allow clinicians to reduce the dose required of
BMP-2 protein in clinical applications to promote osteogenesis. The
available crystal structures of the BMPs, its receptors, and the binding partner noggin were analyzed to identify the critical residues
involved in their interaction. In presenting this study, LUDI de novo design method was utilized to perform virtual screening of a large
number of compounds from a commercially available library against the binding sites of noggin to identify the lead chemical compounds
that could potentially block BMP-noggin interaction with a high specificity.
Abstract: A power cable is widely used for power supply in
power distributing networks and power transmission lines. Due to
limitations in the production, delivery and setting up power cables,
they are produced and delivered in several separate lengths. Cable
itself, consists of two cable terminations and arbitrary number of
cable joints, depending on the cable route length. Electrical stress
control is needed to prevent a dielectric breakdown at the end of the
insulation shield in both the air and cable insulation. Reliability of
cable joint depends on its materials, design, installation and operating
environment. The paper describes design and performance results for
new modeled cable joints. Design concepts, based on numerical
calculations, must be correct. An Equivalent Electrodes
Method/Boundary Elements Method-hybrid approach that allows
electromagnetic field calculations in multilayer dielectric media,
including inhomogeneous regions, is presented.
Abstract: Increase in using internet makes some problems that
one of them is "internet anxiety". Internet anxiety is a type of anxious
that people may feel during surfing internet or using internet for their
educational purpose, blogging or streaming to digital libraries. The
goal of this study is evaluating of internet anxiety among the
management students. In this research Ealy's internet anxiety
questionnaire, consists of positive and negative items, is completed
by 310 participants. According to the findings, about 64.7% of them
were equal or below to mean anxiety score (50). The distribution of
internet anxiety scores was normal and there was no meaningful
difference between men-s and women's anxiety level in this sample.
Results also showed that there is no meaningful difference of internet
anxiety level between different fields of study in Management. This
evaluation will help managers to perform gap analysis between the
existent level and the desired one. Future work would be providing
techniques for abating human anxiety while using internet via human
computer interaction techniques.
Abstract: A high performance clarification system has been
discussed for advanced aqueous reprocessing of FBR spent fuel.
Dissolver residue gives the cause of troubles on the plant operation of
reprocessing. In this study, the new clarification system based on the
hybrid of centrifuge and filtration was proposed to get the high
separation ability of the component of whole insoluble sludge. The
clarification tests of simulated solid species were carried out to
evaluate the clarification performance using small-scale test apparatus
of centrifuge and filter unit. The density effect of solid species on the
collection efficiency was mainly evaluated in the centrifugal
clarification test. In the filtration test using ceramic filter with pore
size of 0.2μm, on the other hand, permeability and filtration rate
were evaluated in addition to the filtration efficiency. As results, it was
evaluated that the collection efficiency of solid species on the new
clarification system was estimated as nearly 100%. In conclusion, the
high clarification performance of dissolver liquor can be achieved by
the hybrid of the centrifuge and filtration system.
