Abstract: In this work, a Modified Functional Link Artificial
Neural Network (M-FLANN) is proposed which is simpler than a
Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and improves upon the universal
approximation capability of Functional Link Artificial Neural
Network (FLANN). MLP and its variants: Direct Linear Feedthrough
Artificial Neural Network (DLFANN), FLANN and
M-FLANN have been implemented to model a simulated Water Bath
System and a Continually Stirred Tank Heater (CSTH). Their
convergence speed and generalization ability have been compared.
The networks have been tested for their interpolation and
extrapolation capability using noise-free and noisy data. The results
show that M-FLANN which is computationally cheap, performs
better and has greater generalization ability than other networks
considered in the work.
Abstract: The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is
one of the most widely used computational methods in
electromagnetic. This paper describes the design of two-dimensional
(2D) FDTD simulation software for transverse magnetic (TM)
polarization using Berenger's split-field perfectly matched layer
(PML) formulation. The software is developed using Matlab
programming language. Numerical examples validate the software.
Abstract: The myocardial sintigraphy is an imaging modality which provides functional informations. Whereas, coronarography modality gives useful informations about coronary arteries anatomy. In case of coronary artery disease (CAD), the coronarography can not determine precisely which moderate lesions (artery reduction between 50% and 70%), known as the “gray zone", are haemodynamicaly significant. In this paper, we aim to define the relationship between the location and the degree of the stenosis in coronary arteries and the observed perfusion on the myocardial scintigraphy. This allows us to model the impact evolution of these stenoses in order to justify a coronarography or to avoid it for patients suspected being in the gray zone. Our approach is decomposed in two steps. The first step consists in modelling a coronary artery bed and stenoses of different location and degree. The second step consists in modelling the left ventricle at stress and at rest using the sphercical harmonics model and myocardial scintigraphic data. We use the spherical harmonics descriptors to analyse left ventricle model deformation between stress and rest which permits us to conclude if ever an ischemia exists and to quantify it.

optimization programming time each of the surgeries.
Abstract: This paper presents an improved image segmentation
model with edge preserving regularization based on the
piecewise-smooth Mumford-Shah functional. A level set formulation
is considered for the Mumford-Shah functional minimization in
segmentation, and the corresponding partial difference equations are
solved by the backward Euler discretization. Aiming at encouraging
edge preserving regularization, a new edge indicator function is
introduced at level set frame. In which all the grid points which is used
to locate the level set curve are considered to avoid blurring the edges
and a nonlinear smooth constraint function as regularization term is
applied to smooth the image in the isophote direction instead of the
gradient direction. In implementation, some strategies such as a new
scheme for extension of u+ and u- computation of the grid points and
speedup of the convergence are studied to improve the efficacy of the
algorithm. The resulting algorithm has been implemented and
compared with the previous methods, and has been proved efficiently
by several cases.
Abstract: Thin linear-elastic cylindrical circular shells having a
micro-periodic structure along two directions tangent to the shell
midsurface (biperiodic shells) are object of considerations. The aim
of this paper is twofold. First, we formulate an averaged nonasymptotic
model for the analysis of parametric vibrations or dynamical
stability of periodic shells under consideration, which has constant
coefficients and takes into account the effect of a cell size on the
overall shell behavior (a length-scale effect). This model is derived
employing the tolerance modeling procedure. Second we apply the
obtained model to derivation of frequency equation being a starting
point in the analysis of parametric vibrations. The effect of the microstructure
length oh this frequency equation is discussed.
Abstract: In this work we evaluate the possibility of predicting
the emotional state of a person based on the EEG. We investigate
the problem of classifying valence from EEG signals during
the presentation of affective pictures, utilizing the "frontal EEG
asymmetry" phenomenon. To distinguish positive and negative
emotions, we applied the Common Spatial Patterns algorithm.
In contrast to our expectations, the affective pictures did not
reliably elicit changes in frontal asymmetry. The classifying task
thereby becomes very hard as reflected by the poor classifier
performance. We suspect that the masking of the source of the
brain activity related to emotions, coming mostly from deeper
structures in the brain, and the insufficient emotional engagement
are among main reasons why it is difficult to predict the emotional
state of a person.
Abstract: Interactive CAD systems have to allocate and
deallocate memory frequently. Frequent memory allocation and
deallocation can play a significant role in degrading application
performance. An application may use memory in a very specific way
and pay a performance penalty for functionality it does not need. We
could counter that by developing specialized memory managers.
Abstract: Chemical reaction and diffusion are important phenomena in quantitative neurobiology and biophysics. The knowledge of the dynamics of calcium Ca2+ is very important in cellular physiology because Ca2+ binds to many proteins and regulates their activity and interactions Calcium waves propagate inside cells due to a regenerative mechanism known as calcium-induced calcium release. Buffer-mediated calcium diffusion in the cytosol plays a crucial role in the process. A mathematical model has been developed for calcium waves by assuming the buffers are in equilibrium with calcium i.e., the rapid buffering approximation for a one dimensional unsteady state case. This model incorporates important physical and physiological parameters like dissociation rate, diffusion rate, total buffer concentration and influx. The finite difference method has been employed to predict [Ca2+] and buffer concentration time course regardless of the calcium influx. The comparative studies of the effect of the rapid buffered diffusion and kinetic parameters of the model on the concentration time course have been performed.
Abstract: This paper introduces a new approach for the performance
analysis of adaptive filter with error saturation nonlinearity in
the presence of impulsive noise. The performance analysis of adaptive
filters includes both transient analysis which shows that how fast
a filter learns and the steady-state analysis gives how well a filter
learns. The recursive expressions for mean-square deviation(MSD)
and excess mean-square error(EMSE) are derived based on weighted
energy conservation arguments which provide the transient behavior
of the adaptive algorithm. The steady-state analysis for co-related
input regressor data is analyzed, so this approach leads to a new
performance results without restricting the input regression data to
be white.
Abstract: This study aims at using multi-source data to monitor
coral biodiversity and coral bleaching. We used coral reef at Racha
Islands, Phuket as a study area. There were three sources of data:
coral diversity, sensor based data and satellite data.
Abstract: In this paper, we consider a new particle filter inspired
by biological evolution. In the standard particle filter, a resampling
scheme is used to decrease the degeneracy phenomenon and improve
estimation performance. Unfortunately, however, it could cause the
undesired the particle deprivation problem, as well. In order to
overcome this problem of the particle filter, we propose a novel
filtering method called the genetic filter. In the proposed filter, we
embed the genetic algorithm into the particle filter and overcome the
problems of the standard particle filter. The validity of the proposed
method is demonstrated by computer simulation.
Abstract: Modular fixtures (MFs) are very important tools in
manufacturing processes in terms of reduction the cost and the
production time. This paper introduces an automated approach for
assembling MFs elements by employing SolidWorks as a powerful
3D CAD software. Visual Basic (VB) programming language was
applied integrating with SolidWorks API (Application programming
interface) functions. This integration allowed creating plug-in file and
generating new menus in the SolidWorks environment. The menus
allow the user to select, insert, and assemble MFs elements.
Abstract: Smoke from domestic wood burning has been
identified as a major contributor to air pollution, motivating detailed
emission measurements under controlled conditions. A series of
experiments was performed to characterise the emissions from wood
combustion in a fireplace and in a woodstove of two common species
of trees grown in Spain: Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) and
black poplar (Populus nigra). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in
the exhaust emissions were collected in Tedlar bags, re-sampled in
sorbent tubes and analysed by thermal desorption-gas
chromatography-flame ionisation detection. Pyrenean oak presented
substantially higher emissions in the woodstove than in the fireplace,
for the majority of compounds. The opposite was observed for
poplar. Among the 45 identified species, benzene and benzenerelated
compounds represent the most abundant group, followed by
oxygenated VOCs and aliphatics. Emission factors obtained in this
study are generally of the same order than those reported for
residential experiments in the USA.
Abstract: The article presents analysis results of maps of
expected subsidence in undermined areas for road repair
management. The analysis was done in the area of Karvina district in
the Czech Republic, including undermined areas with ongoing deep
mining activities or finished deep mining in years 2003 - 2009.
The article discusses the possibilities of local road maintenance
authorities to determine areas that will need most repairs in the future
with limited data available. Using the expected subsidence maps new
map of surface curvature was calculated. Combined with road maps
and historical data about repairs the result came for five main
categories of undermined areas, proving very simple tool for
management.
Abstract: In real-field applications, the correct determination of voice segments highly improves the overall system accuracy and minimises the total computation time. This paper presents reliable measures of speech compression by detcting the end points of the speech signals prior to compressing them. The two different compession schemes used are the Global threshold and the Level- Dependent threshold techniques. The performance of the proposed method is tested wirh the Signal to Noise Ratios, Peak Signal to Noise Ratios and Normalized Root Mean Square Error parameter measures.
Abstract: The need to have standards has always been a priority
of all the disciplines in the world. Today, standards such as XML and
USB are trying to create a universal interface for their respective
areas. The information regarding every family in the discipline
addressed, must have a lot in common, known as Metadata. A lot of
work has been done in specific domains such as IEEE LOM and
MPEG-7 but they do not appeal to the universality of creating
Metadata for all entities, where we take an entity (object) as, not
restricted to Software Terms. This paper tries to address this problem
of universal Metadata Definition which may lead to increase in
precision of search.
Abstract: Facial features are frequently used to represent local
properties of a human face image in computer vision applications. In
this paper, we present a fast algorithm that can extract the facial
features online such that they can give a satisfying representation of a
face image. It includes one step for a coarse detection of each facial
feature by AdaBoost and another one to increase the accuracy of the
found points by Active Shape Models (ASM) in the regions of interest.
The resulted facial features are evaluated by matching with artificial
face models in the applications of physiognomy. The distance measure
between the features and those in the fate models from the database is
carried out by means of the Hausdorff distance. In the experiment, the
proposed method shows the efficient performance in facial feature
extractions and online system of physiognomy.
Abstract: In this study, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)
were modified with nitric acid chemically and by dielectric barrier
discharge (DBD) plasma in an oxygen-based atmosphere. Used
carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by chemical vapour
deposition (CVD) floating catalyst method. For removing amorphous
carbon and metal catalyst, MWNTs were exposed to dry air and
washed with hydrochloric acid. Heating purified CNTs under helium
atmosphere caused elimination of acidic functional groups. Fourier
transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows formation of
oxygen containing groups such as C=O and COOH. Brunauer,
Emmett, Teller (BET) analysis revealed that functionalization causes
generation of defects on the sidewalls and opening of the ends of
CNTs. Results of temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and gas
chromatography(GC) indicate that nitric acid treatment create more
acidic groups than plasma treatment.
Abstract: Square pipes (pipes with square cross sections) are
being used for various industrial objectives, such as machine
structure components and housing/building elements. The utilization
of them is extending rapidly and widely. Hence, the out-put of those
pipes is increasing and new application fields are continually
developing.
Due to various demands in recent time, the products have to
satisfy difficult specifications with high accuracy in dimensions. The
reshaping process design of pipes with square cross sections;
however, is performed by trial and error and based on expert-s
experience.
In this paper, a computer-aided simulation is developed based on
the 2-D elastic-plastic method with consideration of the shear
deformation to analyze the reshaping process. Effect of various
parameters such as diameter of the circular pipe and mechanical
properties of metal on product dimension and quality can be
evaluated by using this simulation. Moreover, design of reshaping
process include determination of shrinkage of cross section,
necessary number of stands, radius of rolls and height of pipe at each
stand, are investigated. Further, it is shown that there are good
agreements between the results of the design method and the
experimental results.
