Abstract: This paper covers various aspects of the Internet film
piracy. In order to successfully deal with this matter, it is needed to
recognize and explain various motivational factors related to film
piracy. Thus, this study proposes groups of economical, sociopsychological
and other factors that could motivate individuals
to engage in pirate activities. The paper also studies the interactions
between downloaders and uploaders and offers the causality of the
motivational factors and its effects on the film industry.
Moreover, the study also focuses on proposed scheme of relations
of downloading movies and the possible effect on box office
revenues.
Abstract: Consumer demand for products with low fat or sugar content and low levels of food additives, as well as cost factors, make exopolysaccharides (EPS) a viable alternative. EPS remain an interesting tool to modulate the sensory properties of yoghurt. This study was designed to evaluate EPS production potential of commercial yoghurt starter cultures (Yo-Flex starters: Harmony 1.0, TWIST 1.0 and YF-L902, Chr.Hansen, Denmark) and their influence on an apparent viscosity of yoghurt samples. The production of intracellularly synthesized EPS by different commercial yoghurt starters varies roughly from 144,08 to 440,81 mg/l. Analysing starters’ producing EPS, they showed large variations in concentration and supposedly composition. TWIST 1.0 had produced greater amounts of EPS in MRS medium and in yoghurt samples but there wasn’t determined significant contribution to development of texture as well as an apparent viscosity of the final product. YF-L902 and Harmony 1.0 starters differed considerably in EPS yields, but not in apparent viscosities (p>0.05) of the final yoghurts. Correlation between EPS concentration and viscosity of yoghurt samples was not established in the study.
Abstract: A new genetic algorithm, termed the 'optimum individual monogenetic genetic algorithm' (OIMGA), is presented whose properties have been deliberately designed to be well suited to hardware implementation. Specific design criteria were to ensure fast access to the individuals in the population, to keep the required silicon area for hardware implementation to a minimum and to incorporate flexibility in the structure for the targeting of a range of applications. The first two criteria are met by retaining only the current optimum individual, thereby guaranteeing a small memory requirement that can easily be stored in fast on-chip memory. Also, OIMGA can be easily reconfigured to allow the investigation of problems that normally warrant either large GA populations or individuals many genes in length. Local convergence is achieved in OIMGA by retaining elite individuals, while population diversity is ensured by continually searching for the best individuals in fresh regions of the search space. The results given in this paper demonstrate that both the performance of OIMGA and its convergence time are superior to those of a range of existing hardware GA implementations.
Abstract: Diffuse viral encephalitis may lack fever and other cardinal signs of infection and hence its distinction from other acute encephalopathic illnesses is challenging. Often, the EEG changes seen routinely are nonspecific and reflect diffuse encephalopathic changes only. The aim of this study was to use nonlinear dynamic mathematical techniques for analyzing the EEG data in order to look for any characteristic diagnostic patterns in diffuse forms of encephalitis.It was diagnosed on clinical, imaging and cerebrospinal fluid criteria in three young male patients. Metabolic and toxic encephalopathies were ruled out through appropriate investigations. Digital EEGs were done on the 3rd to 5th day of onset. The digital EEGs of 5 male and 5 female age and sex matched healthy volunteers served as controls.Two sample t-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the average values in amplitude between the two groups. However, the standard deviation (or variance) of the EEG signals at FP1-F7 and FP2-F8 are significantly higher for the patients than the normal subjects. The regularisation dimension is significantly less for the patients (average between 1.24-1.43) when compared to the normal persons (average between 1.41-1.63) for the EEG signals from all locations except for the Fz-Cz signal. Similarly the wavelet dimension is significantly less (P = 0.05*) for the patients (1.122) when compared to the normal person (1.458). EEGs are subdued in the case of the patients with presence of uniform patterns, manifested in the values of regularisation and wavelet dimensions, when compared to the normal person, indicating a decrease in chaotic nature.
Abstract: Spent petroleum catalyst from Korean petrochemical
industry contains trace amount of metals such as Ni, V and Mo.
Therefore an attempt was made to recover those trace metal using
bioleaching process. Different leaching parameters such as Fe(II)
concentration, pulp density, pH, temperature and particle size of
spent catalyst particle were studied to evaluate their effects on the
leaching efficiency. All the three metal ions like Ni, V and Mo
followed dual kinetics, i.e., initial faster followed by slower rate. The
percentage of leaching efficiency of Ni and V were higher than Mo.
The leaching process followed a diffusion controlled model and the
product layer was observed to be impervious due to formation of
ammonium jarosite (NH4)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6. In addition, the lower
leaching efficiency of Mo was observed due to a hydrophobic coating
of elemental sulfur over Mo matrix in the spent catalyst.
Abstract: Terminal localization for indoor Wireless Local Area
Networks (WLANs) is critical for the deployment of location-aware
computing inside of buildings. A major challenge is obtaining high
localization accuracy in presence of fluctuations of the received signal
strength (RSS) measurements caused by multipath fading. This paper
focuses on reducing the effect of the distance-varying noise by spatial
filtering of the measured RSS. Two different survey point geometries
are tested with the noise reduction technique: survey points arranged
in sets of clusters and survey points uniformly distributed over the
network area. The results show that the location accuracy improves
by 16% when the filter is used and by 18% when the filter is applied
to a clustered survey set as opposed to a straight-line survey set.
The estimated locations are within 2 m of the true location, which
indicates that clustering the survey points provides better localization
accuracy due to superior noise removal.
Abstract: The square-lattice Ising model is the simplest system
showing phase transitions (the transition between the paramagnetic
phase and the ferromagnetic phase and the transition between the
paramagnetic phase and the antiferromagnetic phase) and critical
phenomena at finite temperatures. The exact solution of the squarelattice
Ising model with free boundary conditions is not known for
systems of arbitrary size. For the first time, the exact solution of
the Ising model on the square lattice with free boundary
conditions is obtained after classifying all )
spin configurations with the microcanonical transfer matrix. Also, the
phase transitions and critical phenomena of the square-lattice Ising
model are discussed using the exact solution on the square
lattice with free boundary conditions.
Abstract: Human-related information security breaches within organizations are primarily caused by employees who have not been made aware of the importance of protecting the information they work with. Information security awareness is accordingly attracting more attention from industry, because stakeholders are held accountable for the information with which they work. The authors developed an Information Security Retrieval and Awareness model – entitled “ISRA" – that is tailored specifically towards enhancing information security awareness in industry amongst all users of information, to address shortcomings in existing information security awareness models. This paper is principally aimed at expounding a prototype for the ISRA model to highlight the advantages of utilizing the model. The prototype will focus on the non-technical, humanrelated information security issues in industry. The prototype will ensure that all stakeholders in an organization are part of an information security awareness process, and that these stakeholders are able to retrieve specific information related to information security issues relevant to their job category, preventing them from being overburdened with redundant information.
Abstract: In this work, the surgical theater of a local hospital in
KSA was analyzed using simulation. The focus was on attempting to
answer questions related to how many Operating Rooms (ORs) to
open and to analyze the performance of the surgical theater in
general and mainly the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to assist
making decisions regarding PACU staffing. The surgical theater
consists of ten operating rooms and the PACU unit which has a
maximum capacity of fifteen beds. Different sequencing rules to
sequence the surgical cases were tested and the Longest Case First
(LCF) were superior to others. The results of the different
alternatives developed and tested can be used by the manager as a
tool to plan and manage the OR and PACU
Abstract: The concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in atmospheric aerosol samples collected at a rural site in Hungary (K-puszta, summer 2008), a boreal forest (Hyytiälä,
April 2007) and a polluted rural area in Italy (San Pietro Capofiume, Po Valley, April 2008). A clear distinction between “clean" and “polluted" periods was observed. Concentrations obtained for Hyytiälä are significantly lower than those for the other two sites. Source reconciliation was performed using diagnostic parameters, such as the carbon preference index and ratios between PAH. The presence of an unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons, especially for the Finnish and Italian samples, is indicative of petrogenic inputs. In K-puszta, the aliphatic hydrocarbons are dominated by leaf wax n-alkanes. The long range transport of anthropogenic pollution contributed to the Finnish aerosol. Industrial activities and vehicular emissions represent major sources in San Pietro Capofiume. PAH in K-puszta consist of both pyrogenic and petrogenic compounds.
Abstract: In this paper, we develop a Spatio-Temporal graph as
of a key component of our knowledge representation Scheme. We
design an integrated representation Scheme to depict not only present
and past but future in parallel with the spaces in an effective and
intuitive manner. The resulting multi-dimensional comprehensive
knowledge structure accommodates multi-layered virtual world
developing in the time to maximize the diversity of situations in the
historical context. This knowledge representation Scheme is to be used
as the basis for simulation of situations composing the virtual world
and for implementation of virtual agents' knowledge used to judge and
evaluate the situations in the virtual world. To provide natural contexts
for situated learning or simulation games, the virtual stage set by this
Spatio-Temporal graph is to be populated by agents and other objects
interrelated and changing which are abstracted in the ontology.
Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify seat belt wearing
factor among road users in Malaysia. Evidence-based approach
through in-depth crash investigation was utilised to determine the
intended objectives. The objective was scoped into crashes
investigated by Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research
(MIROS) involving passenger vehicles within 2007 and 2010. Crash
information of a total of 99 crash cases involving 240 vehicles and
864 occupants were obtained during the study period. Statistical test
and logistic regression analysis have been performed. Results of the
analysis revealed that gender, seat position and age were associated
with seat belt wearing compliance in Malaysia. Males are 97.6%
more likely to wear seat belt compared to females (95% CI 1.317 to
2.964). By seat position, the finding indicates that frontal occupants
were 82 times more likely to be wearing seat belt (95% CI 30.199 to
225.342) as compared to rear occupants. It is also important to note
that the odds of seat belt wearing increased by about 2.64% (95% CI
1.0176 to 1.0353) for every one year increase in age. This study is
essential in understanding the Malaysian tendency in belting up
while being occupied in a vehicle. The factors highlighted in this
study should be emphasized in road safety education in order to
increase seat belt wearing rate in this country and ultimately in
preventing deaths due to road crashes.
Abstract: This paper proposes a low power SRAM based on
five transistor SRAM cell. Proposed SRAM uses novel word-line
decoding such that, during read/write operation, only selected cell
connected to bit-line whereas, in conventional SRAM (CV-SRAM),
all cells in selected row connected to their bit-lines, which in turn
develops differential voltages across all bit-lines, and this makes
energy consumption on unselected bit-lines. In proposed SRAM
memory array divided into two halves and this causes data-line
capacitance to reduce. Also proposed SRAM uses one bit-line and
thus has lower bit-line leakage compared to CV-SRAM.
Furthermore, the proposed SRAM incurs no area overhead, and has
comparable read/write performance versus the CV-SRAM.
Simulation results in standard 0.25μm CMOS technology shows in
worst case proposed SRAM has 80% smaller dynamic energy
consumption in each cycle compared to CV-SRAM. Besides, energy
consumption in each cycle of proposed SRAM and CV-SRAM
investigated analytically, the results of which are in good agreement
with the simulation results.
Abstract: This paper presents an application of 5S lean technology to a production facility. Due to increased demand, high product variety, and a push production system, the plant has suffered from excessive wastes, unorganized workstations, and unhealthy work environment. This has translated into increased production cost, frequent delays, and low workers morale. Under such conditions, it has become difficult, if not impossible, to implement effective continuous improvement studies. Hence, the lean project is aimed at diagnosing the production process, streamlining the workflow, removing/reducing process waste, cleaning the production environment, improving plant layout, and organizing workstations. 5S lean technology is utilized for achieving project objectives. The work was a combination of both culture changes and tangible/physical changes on the shop floor. The project has drastically changed the plant and developed the infrastructure for a successful implementation of continuous improvement as well as other best practices and quality initiatives.
Abstract: This paper presents the decoder design for the single error correcting and double error detecting code proposed by the authors in an earlier paper. The speed of error detection and correction of a code is largely dependent upon the associated encoder and decoder circuits. The complexity and the speed of such circuits are determined by the number of 1?s in the parity check matrix (PCM). The number of 1?s in the parity check matrix for the code proposed by the authors are fewer than in any currently known single error correcting/double error detecting code. This results in simplified encoding and decoding circuitry for error detection and correction.
Abstract: Tread design has evolved over the years to achieve the common tread pattern used in current vehicles. However, to meet safety and comfort requirements, tread design considers more than one design factor. Tread design must consider the grip and drainage, and the manner in which to reduce rolling noise, which is one of the main factors considered by manufacturers. The main objective of this study was the application the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique to simulate the contact surface of the tire and ground. The results demonstrated an air-Pumping and large pressure drop effect in the process of contact surface. The results also revealed that the pressure can be used to analyze sound pressure level (SPL).
Abstract: With major technological advances and to reduce the
cost of training apprentices for real-time critical systems, it was
necessary the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems for
training apprentices in these systems. These systems, in general, have
interactive features so that the learning is actually more efficient,
making the learner more familiar with the mechanism in question. In
the home stage of learning, tests are performed to obtain the student's
income, a measure on their use. The aim of this paper is to present a
framework to model an Intelligent Tutoring Systems using the UML
language. The various steps of the analysis are considered the
diagrams required to build a general model, whose purpose is to
present the different perspectives of its development.
Abstract: Clustering large populations is an important problem
when the data contain noise and different shapes. A good clustering
algorithm or approach should be efficient enough to detect clusters
sensitively. Besides space complexity, time complexity also gains
importance as the size grows. Using hierarchies we developed a new
algorithm to split attributes according to the values they have and
choosing the dimension for splitting so as to divide the database
roughly into equal parts as much as possible. At each node we
calculate some certain descriptive statistical features of the data
which reside and by pruning we generate the natural clusters with a
complexity of O(n).
Abstract: A study was undertaken to assess the potential of an
Algal Turf Scrubber to remove nitrogen from aquaculture effluent to
reduce environmental pollution. High total ammonia nitrogen
concentrations were introduced to an Algal Turf Scrubber developed
under varying hydraulic surface loading rates of African catfish
(Clarius gariepinus) effluent in a recirculating aquaculture system.
Nutrient removal rates were not affected at total suspended solids
concentration of up to 0.04g TSS/l (P > 0.05). Nitrogen removal
rates 0.93-0.99g TAN/m²/d were recorded at very high loading rates
3.76-3.81 g TAN/m²/d. Total ammonia removal showed ½ order
kinetics between 1.6 to 2.3mg/l Total Ammonia Nitrogen
concentrations. Nitrogen removal increased with its loading, which
increased with hydraulic surface loading rate. Total Ammonia
Nitrogen removal by Algal turf scrubber was higher than reported
values for fluidized bed filters and trickling filters. The algal turf
scrubber also effectively removed nitrate thereby reducing the need
for water exchange.
Abstract: Information regarding early onset neonatal sepsis
(EONS) pathogens may vary between regions. Global perspectives
showed Group B Streptococcal (GBS) as the most common causative
pathogens, but the widespread use of intrapartum antibiotics has
changed the pathogens pattern towards gram negative
microorganisms, especially E. coli. Objective of this study is to
describe the pathogens isolated, to assess current treatment and risk
of EONS. Records of 899 neonates born in three General Hospitals
between 2009 until 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Proven was
found in 22 (3%) neonates. The majority was isolated with gram
positive organisms, 17 (2.3%). All grams positive and most gram
negative organisms showed sensitivity to the tested antibiotics. Only
two rare gram negative organisms showed total resistant. Male was
possible risk of proven EONS. Although proven EONS remains
uncommon in Malaysia, nonetheless, the effect of intrapartum
antibiotics still required continuous surveillance.
