Abstract: Construction cost in India is increasing at around 50
per cent over the average inflation levels. It have registered increase
of up to 15 per cent every year, primarily due to cost of basic
building materials such as steel, cement, bricks, timber and other
inputs as well as cost of labour. As a result, the cost of construction
using conventional building materials and construction is becoming
beyond the affordable limits particularly for low-income groups of
population as well as a large cross section of the middle - income
groups. Therefore, there is a need to adopt cost-effective construction
methods either by up-gradation of traditional technologies using local
resources or applying modern construction materials and techniques
with efficient inputs leading to economic solutions. This has become
the most relevant aspect in the context of the large volume of housing
to be constructed in both rural and urban areas and the consideration
of limitations in the availability of resources such as building
materials and finance. This paper makes an overview of the housing
status in India and adoption of appropriate and cost effective
technologies in the country.
Abstract: Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a well-known
hepatotoxin and exposure to this chemical is known to induce
oxidative stress and causes liver injury by the formation of free
radicals. Flacourtia indica commonly known as 'Baichi' has been
reported as an effective remedy for the treatment of a variety of
diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the
hepatoprotective activity of aqueous extract of leaves of Flacourtia
indica against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity. Animals were pretreated
with the aqueous extract of Flacourtia indica (250 & 500 mg/kg
body weight) for one week and then challenged with CCl4 (1.5 ml/kg
bw) in olive oil (1:1, v/v) on 7th day. Serum marker enzymes (ALP,
AST, ALT, Total Protein & Total Bilirubin) and TBARS level
(Marker for oxidative stress) were estimated in all the study groups.
Alteration in the levels of biochemical markers of hepatic damage
like AST, ALT, ALP, Total Protein, Total Bilirubin and lipid
peroxides (TBARS) were tested in both CCl4 treated and extract
treated groups. CCl4 has enhanced the AST, ALT, ALP and the
Lipid peroxides (TBARS) in liver. Treatment of aqueous extract of
Flacourtia indica leaves (250 & 500 mg/kg) exhibited a significant
protective effect by altering the serum levels of AST, ALT, ALP,
Total Protein, Total Bilirubin and liver TBARS. These biochemical
observations were supported by histopathological study of liver
sections. From this preliminary study it has been concluded that the
aqueous extract of the leaves of Flacourtia indica protects liver
against oxidative damages and could be used as an effective protector
against CCl4 induced hepatic damage. Our findings suggested that
Flacourtia indica possessed good hepatoprotective activity
Abstract: Image target detection and tracking methods based on
target information such as intensity, shape model, histogram and
target dynamics have been proven to be robust to target model
variations and background clutters as shown by recent researches.
However, no definitive answer has been given to occluded target by
counter measure or limited field of view(FOV). In this paper, we
will present a novel tracking method using filtering and computational
geometry. This paper has two central goals: 1) to deal with vulnerable
target measurements; and 2) to maintain target tracking out of FOV
using non-target-originated information. The experimental results,
obtained with airborne images, show a robust tracking ability with
respect to the existing approaches. In exploring the questions of target
tracking, this paper will be limited to consideration of airborne image.
Abstract: Wood as a natural renewable material is vulnerable to
degradation by microorganisms and susceptible to change in
dimension by water. In order to effectively improve the durability of
wood, an active reagent, maleic anhydride (Man) was selected for
wood modification. Man was first dissolved into a solvent, and then
penetrated into wood porous structure under a vacuum/pressure
condition. After a final catalyst-thermal treatment, wood modification
was finished. The test results indicate that acetone is a good solvent for
transporting Man into wood matrix. SEM observation proved that
wood samples treated by Man kept a good cellular structure, indicating
a well penetration of Man into wood cell walls. FTIR analysis
suggested that Man reacted with hydroxyl groups on wood cell walls
by its ring-ether group, resulting in reduction of amount of hydroxyl
groups and resultant good dimensional stability as well as fine decay
resistance. Consequently, Man modifying wood to improve its
durability is an effective method.
Abstract: Computation of facility location problem for every
location in the country is not easy simultaneously. Solving the
problem is described by using cluster computing. A technique is to
design parallel algorithm by using local search with single swap
method in order to solve that problem on clusters. Parallel
implementation is done by the use of portable parallel programming,
Message Passing Interface (MPI), on Microsoft Windows Compute
Cluster. In this paper, it presents the algorithm that used local search
with single swap method and implementation of the system of a
facility to be opened by using MPI on cluster. If large datasets are
considered, the process of calculating a reasonable cost for a facility
becomes time consuming. The result shows parallel computation of
facility location problem on cluster speedups and scales well as
problem size increases.
Abstract: Robots- visual perception is a field that is gaining
increasing attention from researchers. This is partly due to emerging
trends in the commercial availability of 3D scanning systems or
devices that produce a high information accuracy level for a variety of
applications. In the history of mining, the mortality rate of mine workers
has been alarming and robots exhibit a great deal of potentials to
tackle safety issues in mines. However, an effective vision system
is crucial to safe autonomous navigation in underground terrains.
This work investigates robots- perception in underground terrains
(mines and tunnels) using statistical region merging (SRM) model.
SRM reconstructs the main structural components of an imagery
by a simple but effective statistical analysis. An investigation is
conducted on different regions of the mine, such as the shaft, stope
and gallery, using publicly available mine frames, with a stream of
locally captured mine images. An investigation is also conducted on a
stream of underground tunnel image frames, using the XBOX Kinect
3D sensors. The Kinect sensors produce streams of red, green and
blue (RGB) and depth images of 640 x 480 resolution at 30 frames per
second. Integrating the depth information to drivability gives a strong
cue to the analysis, which detects 3D results augmenting drivable and
non-drivable regions in 2D. The results of the 2D and 3D experiment
with different terrains, mines and tunnels, together with the qualitative
and quantitative evaluation, reveal that a good drivable region can be
detected in dynamic underground terrains.
Abstract: Instead of traditional (nominal) classification we investigate
the subject of ordinal classification or ranking. An enhanced
method based on an ensemble of Support Vector Machines (SVM-s)
is proposed. Each binary classifier is trained with specific weights
for each object in the training data set. Experiments on benchmark
datasets and synthetic data indicate that the performance of our
approach is comparable to state of the art kernel methods for
ordinal regression. The ensemble method, which is straightforward
to implement, provides a very good sensitivity-specificity trade-off
for the highest and lowest rank.
Abstract: Ant Colony Algorithms have been applied to difficult
combinatorial optimization problems such as the travelling salesman
problem and the quadratic assignment problem. In this paper gridbased
and random-based ant colony algorithms are proposed for
automatic 3D hose routing and their pros and cons are discussed. The
algorithm uses the tessellated format for the obstacles and the
generated hoses in order to detect collisions. The representation of
obstacles and hoses in the tessellated format greatly helps the
algorithm towards handling free-form objects and speeds up
computation. The performance of algorithm has been tested on a
number of 3D models.
Abstract: The rapid pace of technological advancement and its
consequential widening digital divide has resulted in the
marginalization of the disabled especially the communication
challenged. The dearth of suitable technologies for the development
of assistive technologies has served to further marginalize the
communications challenged user population and widen this chasm
even further. Given the varying levels of disability there and its
associated requirement for customized solution based. This paper
explains the use of a Software Development Kits (SDK) for the
bridging of this communications divide through the use of industry
poplar communications SDKs towards identification of requirements
for communications challenged users as well as identification of
appropriate frameworks for future development initiatives.
Abstract: This paper presents Simulation and experimental
study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of an adaptive artificial
neural network stabilizer on enhancing the damping torque of a
synchronous generator. For this purpose, a power system comprising
a synchronous generator feeding a large power system through a
short tie line is considered. The proposed adaptive neuro-control
system consists of two multi-layered feed forward neural networks,
which work as a plant model identifier and a controller. It generates
supplementary control signals to be utilized by conventional
controllers. The details of the interfacing circuits, sensors and
transducers, which have been designed and built for use in tests, are
presented. The synchronous generator is tested to investigate the
effect of tuning a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) on its dynamic
stability. The obtained simulation and experimental results verify the
basic theoretical concepts.
Abstract: This research was to study a comparison of inspector-s performance between regular and complex visual inspection task. Visual task was simulated on DVD read control circuit. Inspection task was performed by using computer. Subjects were 10 undergraduate randomly selected and test for 20/20. Then, subjects were divided into two groups, five for regular inspection (control group) and five for complex inspection (treatment group) tasks. Result was showed that performance on regular and complex inspectors was significantly difference at the level of 0.05. Inspector performance on regular inspection was showed high percentage on defects detected by using equal time to complex inspection. This would be indicated that inspector performance was affected by visual inspection task.
Abstract: Majority of pepper farmers in Malaysia are using the
open-sun method for drying the pepper berries. This method is time
consuming and exposed the berries to rain and contamination. A
maintenance-friendly and properly enclosed dryer is therefore
desired. A dryer design with a solar collector and a chimney was
studied and adapted to suit the needs of small-scale pepper farmers in
Malaysia. The dryer will provide an environment with an optimum
operating temperature meant for drying pepper berries. The dryer
model was evaluated by using commercially available computational
fluid dynamic (CFD) software in order to understand the heat and
mass transfer inside the dryer. Natural convection was the only mode
of heat transportation considered in this study as in accordance to the
idea of having a simple and maintenance-friendly design. To
accommodate the effect of low buoyancy found in natural convection
driers, a biomass burner was integrated into the solar dryer design.

Abstract: Evolutionary Programming (EP) represents a
methodology of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) in which mutation is
considered as a main reproduction operator. This paper presents a
novel EP approach for Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) learning.
The proposed strategy consists of two components: the self-adaptive,
which contains phenotype information and the dynamic, which is
described by genotype. Self-adaptation is achieved by the addition of
a value, called the network weight, which depends on a total number
of hidden layers and an average number of neurons in hidden layers.
The dynamic component changes its value depending on the fitness
of a chromosome, exposed to mutation. Thus, the mutation step size
is controlled by two components, encapsulated in the algorithm,
which adjust it according to the characteristics of a predefined ANN
architecture and the fitness of a particular chromosome. The
comparative analysis of the proposed approach and the classical EP
(Gaussian mutation) showed, that that the significant acceleration of
the evolution process is achieved by using both phenotype and
genotype information in the mutation strategy.
Abstract: A novel approach to speech coding using the hybrid architecture is presented. Advantages of parametric and perceptual coding methods are utilized together in order to create a speech coding algorithm assuring better signal quality than in traditional CELP parametric codec. Two approaches are discussed. One is based on selection of voiced signal components that are encoded using parametric algorithm, unvoiced components that are encoded perceptually and transients that remain unencoded. The second approach uses perceptual encoding of the residual signal in CELP codec. The algorithm applied for precise transient selection is described. Signal quality achieved using the proposed hybrid codec is compared to quality of some standard speech codecs.
Abstract: Particle detection in very noisy and low contrast images
is an active field of research in image processing. In this article, a
method is proposed for the efficient detection and sizing of subsurface
spherical particles, which is used for the processing of softly fused
Au nanoparticles. Transmission Electron Microscopy is used for
imaging the nanoparticles, and the proposed algorithm has been
tested with the two-dimensional projected TEM images obtained.
Results are compared with the data obtained by transmission optical
spectroscopy, as well as with conventional circular object detection
algorithms.
Abstract: Unified Speech Audio Coding (USAC), the latest MPEG standardization for unified speech and audio coding, uses a speech/audio classification algorithm to distinguish speech and audio segments of the input signal. The quality of the recovered audio can be increased by well-designed orchestra/percussion classification and subsequent processing. However, owing to the shortcoming of the system, introducing an orchestra/percussion classification and modifying subsequent processing can enormously increase the quality of the recovered audio. This paper proposes an orchestra/percussion classification algorithm for the USAC system which only extracts 3 scales of Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) rather than traditional 13 scales of MFCCs and use Iterative Dichotomiser 3 (ID3) Decision Tree rather than other complex learning method, thus the proposed algorithm has lower computing complexity than most existing algorithms. Considering that frequent changing of attributes may lead to quality loss of the recovered audio signal, this paper also design a modified subsequent process to help the whole classification system reach an accurate rate as high as 97% which is comparable to classical 99%.
Abstract: Spent petroleum catalyst from Korean petrochemical
industry contains trace amount of metals such as Ni, V and Mo.
Therefore an attempt was made to recover those trace metal using
bioleaching process. Different leaching parameters such as Fe(II)
concentration, pulp density, pH, temperature and particle size of
spent catalyst particle were studied to evaluate their effects on the
leaching efficiency. All the three metal ions like Ni, V and Mo
followed dual kinetics, i.e., initial faster followed by slower rate. The
percentage of leaching efficiency of Ni and V were higher than Mo.
The leaching process followed a diffusion controlled model and the
product layer was observed to be impervious due to formation of
ammonium jarosite (NH4)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6. In addition, the lower
leaching efficiency of Mo was observed due to a hydrophobic coating
of elemental sulfur over Mo matrix in the spent catalyst.
Abstract: The concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in atmospheric aerosol samples collected at a rural site in Hungary (K-puszta, summer 2008), a boreal forest (Hyytiälä,
April 2007) and a polluted rural area in Italy (San Pietro Capofiume, Po Valley, April 2008). A clear distinction between “clean" and “polluted" periods was observed. Concentrations obtained for Hyytiälä are significantly lower than those for the other two sites. Source reconciliation was performed using diagnostic parameters, such as the carbon preference index and ratios between PAH. The presence of an unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons, especially for the Finnish and Italian samples, is indicative of petrogenic inputs. In K-puszta, the aliphatic hydrocarbons are dominated by leaf wax n-alkanes. The long range transport of anthropogenic pollution contributed to the Finnish aerosol. Industrial activities and vehicular emissions represent major sources in San Pietro Capofiume. PAH in K-puszta consist of both pyrogenic and petrogenic compounds.
