Abstract: Currently, there are few user friendly Weigh-in-
Motion (WIM) data analysis softwares available which can produce
traffic input data for the recently developed AASHTOWare pavement
Mechanistic-Empirical (ME) design software. However, these
softwares have only rudimentary Quality Control (QC) processes.
Therefore, they cannot properly deal with erroneous WIM data. As
the pavement performance is highly sensible to the quality of WIM
data, it is highly recommended to use more refined QC process on
raw WIM data to get a good result. This study develops a userfriendly
software, which can produce traffic input for the ME design
software. This software takes the raw data (Class and Weight data)
collected from the WIM station and processes it with a sophisticated
QC procedure. Traffic data such as traffic volume, traffic distribution,
axle load spectra, etc. can be obtained from this software; which can
directly be used in the ME design software.
Abstract: Lead being a toxic heavy metal that mankind is
exposed to the highest levels of this metal. There are different sources
of environmental pollution with lead as lead alkyl additives in petrol
and manufacturing processes. The contaminated atmosphere in urban
and industrial areas by lead in Egypt may lead to the contamination
of foods beside the other different sources. The present investigation
studied the risk assessment of lead in some Egyptian edible
vegetables and fruits collected from different environments in Greater
Cairo Governorate, i.e. industrial, heavy traffic and rural areas. A
total of 325 leafy and fruity vegetables and fruits samples belonging
to 11, 6 and 4 different species, respectively were randomly collected
from markets of the three main models. Data indicated the variation
of lead levels in different three areas. The highest levels of lead were
detected in the samples collected from industrial and traffic areas.
However, the lowest levels were found in the rural areas. It could be
concluded that determination of lead levels in foods from different
localities and environments at regularly is very important.
Abstract: This study investigates how the site specific traffic
data differs from the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design
Software default values. Two Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) stations were
installed in Interstate-40 (I-40) and Interstate-25 (I-25) to developed
site specific data. A computer program named WIM Data Analysis
Software (WIMDAS) was developed using Microsoft C-Sharp (.Net)
for quality checking and processing of raw WIM data. A complete
year data from November 2013 to October 2014 was analyzed using
the developed WIM Data Analysis Program. After that, the vehicle
class distribution, directional distribution, lane distribution, monthly
adjustment factor, hourly distribution, axle load spectra, average
number of axle per vehicle, axle spacing, lateral wander distribution,
and wheelbase distribution were calculated. Then a comparative
study was done between measured data and AASHTOWare default
values. It was found that the measured general traffic inputs for I-40
and I-25 significantly differ from the default values.
Abstract: Steel extended end plate bolted connections are
recommended to be widely utilized in special moment-resisting frame
subjected to monotonic loading. Improper design of steel beam to
column connection can lead to the collapse and fatality of structures.
Therefore comprehensive research studies of beam to column
connection design should be carried out. Also the performance and
effect of corrugated on the strength of beam column end plate
connection up to failure under monotonic loading in horizontal
direction is presented in this paper. The non-linear elastic–plastic
behavior has been considered through a finite element analysis using
the multi-purpose software package LUSAS. The effect of vertically
and horizontally types of corrugated web was also investigated.
Abstract: A field experiment was conducted in the Agricultural
Research Station, at El-Ghoraieb, Assiut to study dry seed yield
performance of two locally adapted cultivars (‘Azmerly’ and ‘Cream
7’) and two line introductions (IT81D-1032 and IT82D-812) of
common cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) grown at three
different within-row spaces (20, 30 and 40 cm) and two planting
dates in the summer (April 15th and 30th) and in the fall season (Aug.
12th and 27th) of two successive seasons. The data showed that total
dry-seed yield produced by plants grown at 20 cm was greater than at
30 cm in all cvs/lines in both years. Increases in 1000-seed weight
were detected in cv ‘Azmerly’ and line IT82D-812 when they were
grown at 30 cm as compared with 20 cm in the summer season.
However, in the fall season such increases were found in all cvs/lines.
Planting at 40 cm produced seeds of greater weight than planting at
30 cm for all cvs/lines in the fall season and also in cv. Cream 7 and
line IT82D-812 in the summer season, while all cvs/lines in the fall
Planting on April 15th in the summer and also planting on Aug. 12th
in the fall had plants which showed increases in 1000-seed weight
and total dry-seed yield. The greatest 1000-seed weight was found in
the line IT81D-1032 in the summer season and in the line IT82D-812
in the fall season. The sum up results revealed that ‘Azmerly’
produced greater dry-seed yield than ‘Cream 7’ and both of them
were superior to the line IT82D-812 and IT81D-1032 in the summer
season. In the fall, however, the line IT82D-812 produced greater
dry-seed yield than the other cultivars/lines.
Abstract: A geoelectric survey was carried out in some parts of
Angwan Gwari, an outskirt of Lapai Local Government Area on
Niger State which belongs to the Nigerian Basement Complex, with
the aim of evaluating the soil corrosivity, aquifer transmissivity and
protective capacity of the area from which aquifer characterisation
was made. The G41 Resistivity Meter was employed to obtain fifteen
Schlumberger Vertical Electrical Sounding data along profiles in a
square grid network. The data were processed using interpex 1-D
sounding inversion software, which gives vertical electrical sounding
curves with layered model comprising of the apparent resistivities,
overburden thicknesses, and depth. This information was used to
evaluate longitudinal conductance and transmissivities of the layers.
The results show generally low resistivities across the survey area
and an average longitudinal conductance variation from
0.0237Siemens in VES 6 to 0.1261Siemens in VES 15 with almost
the entire area giving values less than 1.0 Siemens. The average
transmissivity values range from 96.45 Ω.m2 in VES 4 to 299070
Ω.m2 in VES 1. All but VES 4 and VES14 had an average
overburden greater than 400 Ω.m2, these results suggest that the
aquifers are highly permeable to fluid movement within, leading to
the possibility of enhanced migration and circulation of contaminants
in the groundwater system and that the area is generally corrosive.
Abstract: With the increasing population and intensive land use,
huge traffic demand is generating worldwide both in developing and
developed countries. As a developing country, Bangladesh is also
facing the same problem in recent years by producing huge numbers
of daily trips. As a matter of fact, extensive traffic demand is
increasing day by day. Also, transport system in Dhaka is
heterogeneous, reflecting the heterogeneity in the socio-economic
and land use patterns. Trips produced here are for different purposes
such as work, business, educational etc. Due to the significant
concentration of educational institutions a large share of the trips are
generated by educational purpose. And one of the major percentages
of educational trips is produced by university going students and
most of them are travelled by car, bus, train, taxi, rickshaw etc. The
aim of the study was to find out the university students’ perception on
public transit ridership. A survey was conducted among 330 students
from eight different universities. It was found out that 26% of the
trips produced by university going students are travelled by public
bus service and only 5% are by train. Percentage of car share is 16%
and 12% of the trips are travelled by private taxi. It has been
observed from the study, students those who prefer bus instead of
other options, 42 percent of their family resides outside Dhaka. And
those who prefer walking, of them, over 40 percent students’ family
reside outside of Dhaka and of them over 85 percent students have a
tendency to live in a mess. On the contrary, students travelling by car
represents, most of their family reside in Dhaka. The study also
revealed that the most important reason that restricts students not to
use public transit is poor service. Negative attitudes such as
discomfort, uneasiness in using public transit also reduces the usage
of public transit. The poor waiting area is another major cause of not
using public transit. Insufficient security also plays a significant role
in not using public transit. On the contrary, the fare is not a problem
for students those who use public transit as a mode of transportation.
Students also think stations are not far away from their home or
institution and they do not need to wait long for the buses or trains. It
was also found accessibility to public transit is moderate.
Abstract: Ocean current is always available around the
surrounding of SHELL Sabah Water Platform and data are collected
every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, for a period of 365 days. Due to
low current speed, conventional hydrokinetic power generation is not
feasible, thus leading to the study of low current enabled vortex
induced vibration power generation application. In this case, the
design of a vortex induced vibration application is studied to obtain
an optimum design for the VIV oscillator. Power output is then
determined to study the feasibility of the VIV application in low
current condition.
Abstract: Digital reference service is when a traditional library
reference service is provided electronically. In most cases users do
not get full satisfaction from using digital reference service due to
variety of reasons. This paper discusses the formal specification of
web services applications for digital reference services (WSDRS).
WSDRS is an informal model that claims to reduce the problems of
digital reference services in libraries. It uses web services technology
to provide efficient digital way of satisfying users’ need in the
reference section of libraries. Informal model is in natural language
which is inconsistent and ambiguous that may cause difficulties to the
developers of the system. In order to solve this problem we decided
to convert the informal specifications into formal specifications. This
is supposed to reduce the overall development time and cost. We use
Z language to develop the formal model and verify it with Z/EVES
theorem prover tool.
Abstract: This paper considers the design of Dual Proportional-
Integral (DPI) Load Frequency Control (LFC), using gravitational
search algorithm (GSA). The design is carried out for nonlinear
hydrothermal power system where generation rate constraint (GRC)
and governor dead band are considered. Furthermore, time delays
imposed by governor-turbine, thermodynamic process, and
communication channels are investigated. GSA is utilized to search
for optimal controller parameters by minimizing a time-domain based
objective function. GSA-based DPI has been compared to Ziegler-
Nichols based PI, and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PI controllers
in order to demonstrate the superior efficiency of the proposed
design. Simulation results are carried for a wide range of operating
conditions and system parameters variations.
Abstract: The web services applications for digital reference
service (WSDRS) of LIS model is an informal model that claims to
reduce the problems of digital reference services in libraries. It uses
web services technology to provide efficient way of satisfying users’
needs in the reference section of libraries. The formal WSDRS model
consists of the Z specifications of all the informal specifications of
the model. This paper discusses the formal validation of the Z
specifications of WSDRS model. The authors formally verify and
thus validate the properties of the model using Z/EVES theorem
prover.
Abstract: In this paper, relationship between different properties
of IC concrete and water cement ratio, obtained from a
comprehensive experiment conducted on IC using local materials
(Burnt clay chips- BC) is presented. In addition, saturated SAP was
used as an IC material in some cases. Relationships have been
developed through regression analysis. The focus of this analysis is
on developing relationship between a dependent variable and an
independent variable. Different percent replacements of BC and
water cement ratios were used. Compressive strength, modulus of
elasticity, water permeability and chloride permeability were tested
and variations of these parameters were analyzed with respect to
water cement ratio.
Abstract: This study presents three different approaches to
estimate bubble point pressures for the binary system of CO2 and
ethyl palmitate fatty acid ethyl ester. The first method involves the
Peng-Robinson (PR) Equation of State (EoS) with the conventional
mixing rule of Van der Waals. The second approach involves the PR
EOS together with the Wong Sandler (WS) mixing rule, coupled with
the UNIQUAC GE model. In order to model the bubble point
pressures with this approach, the volume and area parameter for ethyl
palmitate were estimated by the Hansen group contribution method.
The last method involved the Peng-Robinson, combined with the
Wong-Sandler method, but using NRTL as the GE model. Results
using the Van der Waals mixing rule clearly indicated that this
method has the largest errors among all three methods, with errors in
the range of 3.96-6.22%. The PR-WS-UNIQUAC method exhibited
small errors, with average absolute deviations between 0.95 to 1.97
percent. The PR-WS-NRTL method led to the least errors, where
average absolute deviations ranged between 0.65-1.7%.

conclusions with regard to private tutoring and the online availability
of textbooks’ solution manuals.
Abstract: Removal of the widespread used drug paracetamol
from water was investigated using activated carbon originated from
dende coconut mesocarp and babassu coconut mesocarp. Kinetic and
equilibrium data were obtained at different values of pH. Both
activated carbons showed high efficiency when pH ≤ pHPZC as the
carbonil group of paracetamol molecule are adsorbed due to
positively charged carbon surface. Microporosity also played an
important role in such process. Pseudo-second order model was better
adjusted to the kinetic results. Equilibrium data may be represented
by Langmuir equation.
Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate the adverse
effect of industrial wastewater on surface water quality in Gebeng
industrial estate, Pahang, Malaysia. Surface water was collected from
six sampling stations. Physicochemical parameters were
characterized based on in-situ and ex-situ analysis according to
standard methods by American Public Health Association (APHA).
Selected heavy metals were determined by using Inductively Coupled
Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP MS). The results revealed that the
concentration of heavy metals such as Pb, Cu, Cd, Cr and Hg were
high in samples. The results also showed that the value of Pb and Hg
were higher in the wet season in comparison to dry season.
According to Malaysia National Water Quality Standard (NWQS)
and Water Quality Index (WQI) all the sampling station were
categorized as class IV (highly polluted). The present study revealed
that the adverse effects of careless disposal of wastes and directly
discharge of effluents affected on surface water quality. Therefore,
the authorities should implement the laws to ensure the proper
practices of wastewater management for environmental sustainability
around the study area.
Abstract: Subspace channel estimation methods have been
studied widely, where the subspace of the covariance matrix is
decomposed to separate the signal subspace from noise subspace. The
decomposition is normally done by using either the eigenvalue
decomposition (EVD) or the singular value decomposition (SVD) of
the auto-correlation matrix (ACM). However, the subspace
decomposition process is computationally expensive. This paper
considers the estimation of the multipath slow frequency hopping
(FH) channel using noise space based method. In particular, an
efficient method is proposed to estimate the multipath time delays by
applying multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm which is
based on the null space extracted by the rank revealing LU (RRLU)
factorization. As a result, precise information is provided by the
RRLU about the numerical null space and the rank, (i.e., important
tool in linear algebra). The simulation results demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed novel method by approximately
decreasing the computational complexity to the half as compared
with RRQR methods keeping the same performance.
Abstract: Forward Osmosis (FO) polyamide thin-film composite
membranes have been prepared by interfacial polymerization using
commercial UF polyethersulfoneas membrane support. Different
interfacial polymerization times (10s, 30s and 60s) in the organic
solution containing trimesoyl chloride (TMC) at constant m-phenylenediamine
(MPD) concentration (2% w/v) were studied. The
synthesized polyamide membranes then tested for treatment of
natural organic matter (NOM) and compared to commercial Cellulose
TriAcetate (CTA) membrane. It was found that membrane prepared
with higher reaction time (30s and 60s) exhibited better membrane
performance (flux and humic acid removal) over commercial CTA
membrane.
Abstract: Speech Segmentation is the measure of the change
point detection for partitioning an input speech signal into regions
each of which accords to only one speaker. In this paper, we apply
two features based on multi-scale product (MP) of the clean speech,
namely the spectral centroid of MP, and the zero crossings rate of
MP. We focus on multi-scale product analysis as an important tool
for segmentation extraction. The MP is based on making the product
of the speech wavelet transform coefficients (WTC). We have
estimated our method on the Keele database. The results show the
effectiveness of our method. It indicates that the two features can find
word boundaries, and extracted the segments of the clean speech.
Abstract: The use of information tools is a common activity for
students of any educational stage when they encounter online
learning activities. Finding the relevant information for particular
learning tasks is the topic of this paper as it investigates the use of
information tools for a group of student participants. The paper
describes and discusses the results with particular implications for
use in higher education, and the findings suggest that improvement in
assessment design and subsequent student learning may be achieved
by structuring the purposefulness of information tools usage and
online reading behaviors of university students.
