Abstract: Surface modification and functionalization has been
an important tool for scientists in order to open new frontiers in
nanoscience and nanotechnology. Desired surface characteristics for
the intended applications can be achieved with surface
functionalization.
In this work, the effect of water soluble ligands on the adsorption
capabilities of silver nanoparticles onto AC which was synthesized
from German beech wood was investigated. Sodium borohydride
(NaBH4) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used as the ligands.
Silver nanoparticles with different surface coatings have average
sizes range from 10 to 13 nm. They were synthesized in aqueous
media by reducing Ag (I) ion in the presence of ligands. These
particles displayed adsorption tendencies towards AC when they
were mixed together and shaken in distilled water.
Silver nanoparticles (NaBH4-AgNPs) reduced and stabilized by
NaBH4 adsorbed onto AC with a homogenous dispersion of
aggregates with sizes in the range of 100-400 nm. Beside, silver
nanoparticles, which were prepared in the presence of both NaBH4
and PVA (NaBH4/PVA-Ag NPs), demonstrated that NaBH4/PVA-Ag
NPs adsorbed and dispersed homogenously but, they aggregated with
larger sizes on the AC surface (range from 300 to 600 nm). In
addition, desorption resistance of Ag nanoparticles were investigated
in distilled water. According to the results AgNPs were not desorbed
on the AC surface in distilled water.
Abstract: A simple multi-wavelength passively Q-switched
Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is demonstrated using low cost
multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) based saturable absorber
(SA), which is prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a host
polymer. The multi-wavelength operation is achieved based on
nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect by incorporating 50 m
long photonic crystal fiber (PCF) in the ring cavity. The EDFL
produces a stable multi-wavelength comb spectrum for more than 14
lines with a fixed spacing of 0.48 nm. The laser also demonstrates a
stable pulse train with the repetition rate increases from 14.9 kHz to
25.4 kHz as the pump power increases from the threshold power of
69.0 mW to the maximum pump power of 133.8 mW. The minimum
pulse width of 4.4 μs was obtained at the maximum pump power of
133.8 mW while the highest energy of 0.74 nJ was obtained at pump
power of 69.0 mW.
Abstract: The research work covered in this study includes the morphological structure and optical properties of TiO2-coated silk fibroin (SF) filters at 2.5% wt. TiO2/vol. PVA solution. SEM micrographs revealed the fibrous morphology of the TiO2-coated SF filters. An average diameter of the SF fiber was estimated to be approximately 10µm. Also, it was confirmed that TiO2 can be adhered more on SF filter surface at higher TiO2 dosages. The activity of semiconductor materials was studied by UV-VIS spectrophotometer method. The spectral data recorded shows the strong cut off at 390 nm. The calculated band-gap energy was about 3.19 eV. The photocatalytic activity of the filter was tested for gaseous formaldehyde removal in a modeling room with the total volume of 2.66 m3. The highest removal efficiency (54.72 ± 1.75%) was obtained at the initial formaldehyde concentration of about 5.00 ± 0.50ppm.
Abstract: A polymer cement mortar (PCM) has been widely used as the material of repair and restoration work for concrete structure; however a PCM usually induces an environmental pollutant. Therefore, there is a need to develop PCM which is less impact to
environments. Usually, UM resin is known to be harmless to the environment. Accordingly, in this paper, the properties of the PCM using UM resin were studied. The general cement mortar and UM resin were mixed in the specified ratio. A certain percentage of PVA fibers, steel fibers and mixed fibers (PVA fiber and steel fiber) were added to enhance the flexural strength. The flexural tests were performed in order to investigate the flexural strength of each PCM. Experimental results showed that the strength of proposed PCM using UM resin is improved when they are compared with general cement mortar.
Abstract: This paper presents an extraction of maximum energy from Solar Photovoltaic Array (SPVA) under partial shaded conditions by optimum selection of array size using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique. In this paper a detailed study on the output reduction of different SPVA configurations under partial shaded conditions have been carried out. A generalized MATLAB M-code based software model has been used for any required array size, configuration, shading patterns and number of bypass diodes. Comparative study has been carried out on different configurations by testing several shading scenarios. While the number of shading patterns and the rate of change are very low for stationary SPVA but these may be quite large for SPVA mounted on a mobile platforms. This paper presents the suitability of PSO technique to select optimum configuration for mobile arrays by calculating the global peak (GP) of different configurations and to transfer maximum power to the load.
Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites represent a new class of materials in which nanomaterials act as the reinforcing material in composites, wherein small additions of nanomaterials lead to large enhancements in thermal, optical and mechanical properties. A boost in these properties is due to the large interfacial area per unit volume or weight of the nanoparticles and the interactions between the particle and the polymer. Micro sized particles used as reinforcing agents scatter light, thus reducing light transmittance and optical clarity. Efficient nanoparticle dispersion combined with good polymer–particle interfacial adhesion eliminates scattering and allows the exciting possibility of developing strong yet transparent films, coatings and membranes. This paper aims at synthesising zinc oxide nanoparticles which are reinforced in poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer. The mechanical properties showed that the tensile strength of the PVA nanocomposites increases with the increase in the amount of nanoparticles.
Abstract: Polybag and mulch film in agricultural field are used plastics which caused environmental problems after transplantation and planting processes due to the discarded wastes. Thus a degradable polybag was designed in this study to replace non degradable polybag with natural biodegradable resin that is widely available, namely sago starch (SS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Hybrid blend consists of SS, PVA and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was compounded at different ratios. The thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were investigated. Hybrid films underwent landfill degradation tests for up to 2 months. The films showed gelation and melting transition existed for all three systems with significant melting peaks by LLDPE and PVA. All hybrid blends loses its LLDPE semi crystalline characteristics as PVA and SS systems had disrupted crystallinity and enhanced the amorphosity of the hybrid system. Generally, blending SS with PVA improves the mechanical properties of the SS based materials. Tensile strength of each film was also decreased with the increase of SS contents while its modulus had increased with SS content.
Abstract: Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) has
been used as a common research tool for different neurological
disorders like Multiple Sclerosis. Recently, technology let
researchers to introduce a new versions of the visual test, the paced
visual serial addition test (PVSAT). In this paper, the computerized
version of these two tests is introduced. Beside the number of true
responses are interpreted, the reaction time of subjects are calculated
by the software. We hypothesize that paying attention to the reaction
time may be valuable. For this purpose, sixty eight female normal
subjects and fifty eight male normal subjects are enrolled in the
study. We investigate the similarity between the PASAT3 and
PVSAT3 in number of true responses and the new criterion (the
average reaction time of each subject). The similarity between two
tests were rejected (p-value = 0.000) which means that these two test
differ. The effect of sex in the tests were not approved since the pvalues
of different between PASAT3 and PVSAT3 in both sex is the
same (p-value = 0.000) which means that male and female subjects
performed the tests at no different level of performance. The new
criterion shows a negative correlation with the age which offers aged
normal subjects may have the same number of true responses as the
young subjects but they have latent responses. This will give prove
for the importance of reaction time.
Abstract: The gel-supported precipitation (GSP) process can be
used to make spherical particles (spherules) of nuclear fuel,
particularly for very high temperature reactors (VHTR) and even for
implementing the process called SPHEREPAC. In these different
cases, the main characteristics are the sphericity of the particles to be
manufactured and the control over their grain size. Nonetheless,
depending on the specifications defined for these spherical particles,
the GSP process has intrinsic limits, particularly when fabricating
very small particles. This paper describes the use of secondary
fragmentation (water, water/PVA and uranyl nitrate) on solid
surfaces under varying temperature and vibration conditions to assess
the relevance of using this new technique to manufacture very small
spherical particles by means of a modified GSP process. The
fragmentation mechanisms are monitored and analysed, before the
trends for its subsequent optimised application are described.
Abstract: In this study, hydrogels consisted of polyvinyl alcohol,
propylene glycol and β-glucan were developed by radiation technique
for wound dressing. The prepared hydrogels were characterized by
examining of physical properties such as gel fraction and absorption
ratio. The gel fraction and absorption ratio were dependent on the
crosslinking density. On observing the wound healing of rat skin, the
resulting hydrogels accelerated the wound healing comparing to cotton
gauze. Therefore, the PVA/propylene glycol/β-glucan blended
hydrogels can greatly accelerate the healing without causing irritation.
Abstract: Silk sericin (SS) is a glue-like protein from silkworm
cocoon. With its outstanding moisturization and activation collagen
synthesis properties, silk protein is applied for wound healing. Since
wound dressing in film preparation can facilitate patients-
convenience and reduce risk of wound contraction, SS and polyvinyl
alcohol (PVA) films were prepared with various concentrations of
SS. Their physical properties such as surface density, light
transmission, protein dissolution and tensile modulus were
investigated. The results presented that 3% SS with 2% PVA is the
best ingredient for SS film forming.
Abstract: The hybrid membranes containing inorganic materials in polymer matrix are identified as a remarkable family of proton conducting hybrid electrolytes. In this work, the proton conducting inorganic/organic hybrid membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) were prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), tetraethoxyorthosilane (TEOS) and heteropolyacid (HPA). The synthesized hybrid membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The effects of heteropolyacid incorporation on membrane properties, including morphology and thermal stability were extensively investigated.
Abstract: Polylactic acid-g-polyvinyl acetate (PLLA-g-PVAc)
was used as a compatibilizer for 50/50 starch/PLLA blend. PLLA-g-
PVAc with different mol% of PVAc contents were prepared by
grafting PVAc onto PLLA backbone via free radical polymerization
in solution process. Various conditions such as type and the amount
of initiator, monomer concentration, polymerization time and
temperature were studied. Results showed that the highest mol% of
PVAc grafting (16 mol%) was achieved by conducting graft
copolymerization in toluene at 110°C for 10 h using DCP as an
initiator. Chemical structure of the PVAc grafted PLLA was
confirmed by 1H NMR. Blending of modified starch and PLLA in the
presence compatibilizer with different amounts and mol% PVAc was
acquired using internal mixer at 160°C for 15 min. Effects of PVAc
content and the amount of compatibilizer on mechanical properties of
polymer blend were studied. Results revealed that tensile strength and
tensile modulus of polymer blend with higher PVAc grafting content
compatibilizer showed better properties than that of lower PVAc
grafting content compatibilizer. The amount of compatibilizer was
found optimized in the range of 0.5-1.0 Wt% depending on the mol%
PVAc.
Abstract: Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays were
fabricated onto a pre-treated titanium foil by anodic oxidation with a
voltage of 20V in phosphoric acid/sodium fluoride electrolyte. A pretreatment
of titanium foil involved washing with acetone,
isopropanol, ethanol and deionized water. Carbon doped TiO2
nanotubes (C-TNT) was fabricated 'in-situ' with the same method in
the presence of polyvinyl alcohol and urea as carbon sources. The
affects of polyvinyl alcohol concentration and oxidation time on the
composition, morphology and structure of the C-TN were studied by
FE-SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. FESEM images of the
nanotubes showed uniform arrays of C-TNTs. The density and
microstructures of the nanotubes were greatly affected by the content
of PVA. The introduction of the polyvinyl alcohol into the electrolyte
increases the amount of C content inside TiO2 nanotube arrays
uniformly. The influence of carbon content on the photo-current of
C-TNT was investigated and the I-V profiles of the nanotubes were
established. The preliminary results indicated that the 'in-situ'
doping technique produced a superior quality nanotubes compared to
post doping techniques.
Abstract: A new generation product made from bamboo strips,
known as laminated bamboo, has gained importance. The objective
of this research was to experiment the effect of three factors on the
mechanical property of laminated bamboo. The interested factors for
experimental design were (A) four bamboo species, namely Bambusa
blumeana Schultes (Pai See Suk), Dendrocalamus asper Backer (Pai
Tong), Dendrocalamus hamiltonii Nees (Pai Hok) and
Dendrocalamus sericeus Munro (Pai Sang Mon), (B) two types of
glue adhesive, polyvinyl acetate emulsion (PVAC) fortified with
urea-formaldehyde (UF) and urea-formaldehyde (UF) to make
parallel-oriented bamboo strips laminates and (C) glue weight per
strip area, 150 g/m2 and 190 g/m2. Experimental results showed that
Dendrocalamus asper Backer (Pai Tong) and Dendrocalamus
sericeus Munro (Pai Sang Mon) were best used for manufacturing
due to their highest MOR and MOE. The amount of glue weight 150
g/m2 yielded higher MOR and MOE than the amount of glue weight
190 g/m2. At the conclusion, the laminated bamboo manufacturers
can benefit from this research in order to select right materials
according to strength, cost and accessibility.
Abstract: Aligned and random nanofibrous scaffolds of PVA/PCL/nHA were fabricated by electrospinning method. The composite nanofibrous scaffolds were subjected to detailed analysis. Morphological investigations revealed that the prepared nanofibers have uniform morphology and the average fiber diameters of aligned and random scaffolds were 135.5 and 290 nm, respectively. The obtained scaffolds have a porous structure with porosity of 88 and 76% for random and aligned nanofibers, respectively. Furthermore, FTIR analysis demonstrated that there were strong intramolecular interactions between the molecules of PVA/PCL/nHA. On the other hand, mechanical characterizations show that aligning the nanofibers, could significantly improve the rigidity of the resultant biocomposite nanofibrous scaffolds.
