Abstract: Collective action can be an effective means for local development as well as important strategy to enhance livelihoods especially among rural people. This article explores the level of collective action among members of Fishermen-s Wives Group (KUNITA) in Malaysia. KUNITA was established by the Malaysian Fishery Development Authority (LKIM) with an objective to increase the socio-economic status of fishermen-s families. The members who are mostly the wives and daughters of fishermen are strongly encouraged by LKIM to venture into entrepreneurship activities. The objective of this research was to see the level of collective action among members in KUNITA groups in the state of Selangor. The finding shows that high level of collective action among KUNITA members is strongly based on volunteerism. However, the level of cooperation among members in the group is relatively low. The findings present significant challenges for the group in maintaining the sustainability of KUNITA organization.

reverse engineering in a constructivist environment, to later be integrated in educational software that promotes the teaching of

Abstract: The higher compounded growth rates coupled with
favourable demographics in emerging markets portend abundant
opportunities for multinational organizations. With many
organizations competing for talent in these growing markets, their
ability to succeed will depend on their understanding of local
workforce needs and aspirations. Using data from the Towers Watson
2010 Global Workforce Study, this paper highlights differences in
employee engagement, turnover risks, and attraction and retention
drivers between the two markets. Apart from looking at the
traditional drivers of employee engagement, the study also explores
the value placed by employees on elements like a strong senior
leadership, managerial capabilities and career advancement
opportunities. Results reveal that emerging markets employees seem
to be more engaged and value the non-traditional elements more
highly than the developed markets employees.
Abstract: In the analysis of structures, the nonlinear effects due to large displacement, large rotation and materially-nonlinear are very important and must be considered for the reliable analysis. The non-linear fmite element analysis has potential as usable and reliable means for analyzing of civil structures with the availability of computer technology. In this research the large displacements and materially nonlinear behavior of shear wall is presented with developing of fmite element code using the standard Galerkin weighted residual formulation. Two-dimensional plane stress model was carried out to present the shear wall response. Total Lagangian formulation, which is computationally more effective, is used in the formulation of stiffness matrices and the Newton-Raphson method is applied for the solution of nonlinear transient equations. The details of the program formulation are highlighted and the results of the analyses are presented, along with a comparison of the response of the structure with Ansys software results. The presented model in this paper can be developed for nonlinear analysis of civil engineering structures with different material behavior and complicated geometry.
Abstract: The use of composite materials in offshore engineering for deep sea oil production riser systems has drawn considerable interest due to the potential weight savings and improvement in durability. The design of composite risers consists of two stages: (1) local design based on critical local load cases, and (2) global analysis of the full length composite riser under global loads and assessment of critical locations. In the first stage, eight different material combinations were selected and their laminate configurations optimised under local load considerations. Stage two includes a final local stress analysis of the critical sections of the riser under the combined loads determined in the global analysis. This paper describes two design methodologies of the composite riser to provide minimum structural weight and shows that the use of off angle fibre orientations in addition to axial and hoop reinforcements offer substantial weight savings and ensure the structural capacity.
Abstract: The load frequency control problem of power systems has attracted a lot of attention from engineers and researchers over the years. Increasing and quickly changing load demand, coupled with the inclusion of more generators with high variability (solar and wind power generators) on the network are making power systems more difficult to regulate. Frequency changes are unavoidable but regulatory authorities require that these changes remain within a certain bound. Engineers are required to perform the tricky task of adjusting the control system to maintain the frequency within tolerated bounds. It is well known that to minimize frequency variations, a large proportional feedback gain (speed regulation constant) is desirable. However, this improvement in performance using proportional feedback comes about at the expense of a reduced stability margin and also allows some steady-state error. A conventional PI controller is then included as a secondary control loop to drive the steadystate error to zero. In this paper, we propose a robust controller to replace the conventional PI controller which guarantees performance and stability of the power system over the range of variation of the speed regulation constant. Simulation results are shown to validate the superiority of the proposed approach on a simple single-area power system model.
Abstract: The article presents findings from the study and
analysis of the results of an experimental programme focused on the
production of concrete and fibre reinforced concrete in which natural
aggregate has been substituted with brick or concrete recyclate. The
research results are analyzed to monitor the effect of mechanicalphysical
characteristics on the durability properties of tested
cementitious composites. The key parts of the fibre reinforced
concrete mix are the basic components: aggregates – recyclate,
cement, fly ash, water and fibres. Their specific ratios and the
properties of individual components principally affect the resulting
behaviour of fresh fibre reinforced concrete and the characteristics of
the final product. The article builds on the sources dealing with the
use of recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste in
the production of fibre reinforced concrete. The implemented
procedure of testing the composite contributes to the building
sustainability in environmental engineering.
Abstract: Currently, slider process of Hard Disk Drive Industry
become more complex, defective diagnosis for yield improvement
becomes more complicated and time-consumed. Manufacturing data
analysis with data mining approach is widely used for solving that
problem. The existing mining approach from combining of the KMean
clustering, the machine oriented Kruskal-Wallis test and the
multivariate chart were applied for defective diagnosis but it is still
be a semiautomatic diagnosis system. This article aims to modify an
algorithm to support an automatic decision for the existing approach.
Based on the research framework, the new approach can do an
automatic diagnosis and help engineer to find out the defective
factors faster than the existing approach about 50%.
Abstract: In large Internet backbones, Service Providers
typically have to explicitly manage the traffic flows in order to
optimize the use of network resources. This process is often referred
to as Traffic Engineering (TE). Common objectives of traffic
engineering include balance traffic distribution across the network
and avoiding congestion hot spots. Raj P H and SVK Raja designed
the Bayesian network approach to identify congestion hors pots in
MPLS. In this approach for every node in the network the
Conditional Probability Distribution (CPD) is specified. Based on
the CPD the congestion hot spots are identified. Then the traffic can
be distributed so that no link in the network is either over utilized or
under utilized. Although the Bayesian network approach has been
implemented in operational networks, it has a number of well known
scaling issues.
This paper proposes a new approach, which we call the Pragati
(means Progress) Node Popularity (PNP) approach to identify the
congestion hot spots with the network topology alone. In the new
Pragati Node Popularity approach, IP routing runs natively over the
physical topology rather than depending on the CPD of each node as
in Bayesian network. We first illustrate our approach with a simple
network, then present a formal analysis of the Pragati Node
Popularity approach. Our PNP approach shows that for any given
network of Bayesian approach, it exactly identifies the same result
with minimum efforts. We further extend the result to a more
generic one: for any network topology and even though the network
is loopy. A theoretical insight of our result is that the optimal routing
is always shortest path routing with respect to some considerations of
hot spots in the networks.
Abstract: Nowadays there are lots of applications of power and
free conveyors in logistics. They are the most frequently used
conveyor systems worldwide. Overhead conveyor technologies like
power and free systems are used in the most intra-logistics
applications in trade and industry. The automotive, food, beverage
and textile industry as well as aeronautic catering or engineering are
among the applications. Power and free systems employ different
manufacturing intervals in manufacturing as well as in production as
temporary store and buffer. Depending on the application area, power
and free conveyors are equipped with target controls enabling
complex distribution-and sorting tasks. This article introduces a new
power and free conveyor design in intra-logistics and explains its
components. According to the explanation of the components, a
model is created by means of their technical characteristics. Through
the CAD software, the model is visualized. After that, the static
analysis is evaluated. This analysis helps the calculation of the
mandatory state of structures under force action. This powerful model
helps companies achieve lower development costs as well as quicker
market maturity.
Abstract: The design of a steam turbine is a very complex
engineering operation that can be simplified and improved thanks to
computer-aided multi-objective optimization. This process makes use
of existing optimization algorithms and losses correlations to identify
those geometries that deliver the best balance of performance (i.e.
Pareto-optimal points).
This paper deals with a one-dimensional multi-objective and
multi-point optimization of a single-stage steam turbine. Using a
genetic optimization algorithm and an algebraic one-dimensional
ideal gas-path model based on loss and deviation correlations, a code
capable of performing the optimization of a predefined steam turbine
stage was developed. More specifically, during this study the
parameters modified (i.e. decision variables) to identify the best
performing geometries were solidity and angles both for stator and
rotor cascades, while the objective functions to maximize were totalto-
static efficiency and specific work done.
Finally, an accurate analysis of the obtained results was carried
out.
Abstract: This paper presents an application of the improved
QFD method for determining the specifications of kitchen utensils
rack. By using the improved method, the subjective nature in original
QFD was reduced; particularly in defining the relationship between
customer requirement and engineering characteristics. The regression
analysis that was used for obtaining the relationship functions
between customer requirement and engineering characteristics also
accommodated the inaccurateness of the competitive assessment
results. The improved method which is represented in the form of a
mathematical model had become a formal guidance to allocate the
resource for improving the specifications of kitchen utensils rack.
The specifications obtained had led to the achievement of the highest
feasible customer satisfaction.
Abstract: In this paper motion analysis on a winding
stair-climbing is investigated using our proposed rotational arm type
of robotic wheelchair. For now, the robotic wheelchair is operated in
an open mode to climb winding stairs by a dynamic turning, therefore,
the dynamics model is required to ensure a passenger-s safety.
Equations of motion based on the skid-steering analysis are developed
for the trajectory planning and motion analysis on climbing winding
stairs. Since the robotic wheelchair must climb a winding staircase
stably, the winding trajectory becomes a constraint equation to be
followed, and the Baumgarte-s method is used to solve for the
constrained dynamics equations. Experimental results validate the
behavior of the prototype as it climbs a winding stair.
Abstract: This paper presented a MATLAB-based system named Smart Access Network Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD), purposely for in-service transmission surveillance and self restoration against fiber fault in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. The developed program will be installed with optical line terminal (OLT) at central office (CO) to monitor the status and detect any fiber fault that occurs in FTTH downwardly from CO towards residential customer locations. SANTAD is interfaced with optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) to accumulate every network testing result to be displayed on a single computer screen for further analysis. This program will identify and present the parameters of each optical fiber line such as the line's status either in working or nonworking condition, magnitude of decreasing at each point, failure location, and other details as shown in the OTDR's screen. The failure status will be delivered to field engineers for promptly actions, meanwhile the failure line will be diverted to protection line to ensure the traffic flow continuously. This approach has a bright prospect to improve the survivability and reliability as well as increase the efficiency and monitoring capabilities in FTTH.
Abstract: Model Predictive Control (MPC) is an established control
technique in a wide range of process industries. The reason for
this success is its ability to handle multivariable systems and systems
having input, output or state constraints. Neverthless comparing to
PID controller, the implementation of the MPC in miniaturized
devices like Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) and microcontrollers
has historically been very small scale due to its complexity in
implementation and its computation time requirement. At the same
time, such embedded technologies have become an enabler for future
manufacturing enterprisers as well as a transformer of organizations
and markets. In this work, we take advantage of these recent advances
in this area in the deployment of one of the most studied and applied
control technique in the industrial engineering. In this paper, we
propose an efficient firmware for the implementation of constrained
MPC in the performed STM32 microcontroller using interior point
method. Indeed, performances study shows good execution speed
and low computational burden. These results encourage to develop
predictive control algorithms to be programmed in industrial standard
processes. The PID anti windup controller was also implemented in
the STM32 in order to make a performance comparison with the
MPC. The main features of the proposed constrained MPC framework
are illustrated through two examples.
Abstract: In the present era of aviation technology, autonomous navigation and control have emerged as a prime area of active research. Owing to the tremendous developments in the field, autonomous controls have led today’s engineers to claim that future of aerospace vehicle is unmanned. Development of guidance and navigation algorithms for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an extremely challenging task, which requires efforts to meet strict, and at times, conflicting goals of guidance and control. In this paper, aircraft altitude and heading controllers and an efficient algorithm for self-governing navigation using MATLAB® mapping toolbox is presented which also enables loitering of a fixed wing UAV over a specified area. For this purpose, a nonlinear mathematical model of a UAV is used. The nonlinear model is linearized around a stable trim point and decoupled for controller design. The linear controllers are tested on the nonlinear aircraft model and navigation algorithm is subsequently developed for for autonomous flight of the UAV. The results are presented for trajectory controllers and waypoint based navigation. Our investigation reveals that MATLAB® mapping toolbox can be exploited to successfully deliver an efficient algorithm for autonomous aerial navigation for a UAV.
Abstract: Jordan exerts many efforts to nurture their academically gifted students in special schools since 2001. During
the past nine years of launching these schools, their learning and excellence environments were believed to be distinguished compared
to public schools. This study investigated the environments of gifted
students compared with other non-gifted, using a survey instrument
that measures the dimensions of family, peers, teachers, school- support, society, and resources –dimensions rooted deeply in supporting gifted education, learning, and achievement. A total
number of 109 were selected from excellence schools for
academically gifted students, and 119 non-gifted students were selected from public schools. Around 8.3% of the non-gifted students
reported that they “Never" received any support from their surrounding environments, 14.9% reported “Seldom" support, 23.7% reported “ Often" support, 26.0% reported “Frequent" support, and
32.8% reported “Very frequent" support. Where the gifted students reported more “Never" support than the non-gifted did with 11.3%,
“Seldom" support with 15.4%, “Often" support with 26.6%,
“Frequent" support with 29.0%, and reported “Very frequent" support less than the non-gifted students with 23.6%. Unexpectedly,
statistical differences were found between the two groups favoring
non-gifted students in perception of their surrounding environments
in specific dimensions, namely, school- support, teachers, and society. No statistical differences were found in the other dimensions
of the survey, namely, family, peers, and resources. As the
differences were found in teachers, school- support, and society, the
nurturing environments for the excellence schools need to be revised to adopt more creative teaching styles, rich school atmosphere and
infrastructures, interactive guiding for the students and their parents, promoting for the excellence environments, and re-build successful
identification models. Thus, families, schools, and society should
increase their cooperation, communication, and awareness of the
gifted supportive environments. However, more studies to investigate
other aspects of promoting academic giftedness and excellence are recommended.
Abstract: An immunomodulator bioproduct is prepared in a
batch bioprocess with a modified bacterium Pseudomonas
aeruginosa. The bioprocess is performed in 100 L Bioengineering
bioreactor with 42 L cultivation medium made of peptone, meat
extract and sodium chloride. The optimal bioprocess parameters were
determined: temperature – 37 0C, agitation speed - 300 rpm, aeration
rate – 40 L/min, pressure – 0.5 bar, Dow Corning Antifoam M-max.
4 % of the medium volume, duration - 6 hours. This kind of
bioprocesses are appreciated as difficult to control because their
dynamic behavior is highly nonlinear and time varying. The aim of
the paper is to present (by comparison) different models based on
experimental data.
The analysis criteria were modeling error and convergence rate.
The estimated values and the modeling analysis were done by using
the Table Curve 2D.
The preliminary conclusions indicate Andrews-s model with a
maximum specific growth rate of the bacterium in the range of
0.8 h-1.
Abstract: In this paper, a new method of information fusion – DSmT (Dezert and Smarandache Theory) is introduced to apply to managing and dealing with the uncertain information from robot map building. Here we build grid map form sonar sensors and laser range finder (LRF). The uncertainty mainly comes from sonar sensors and LRF. Aiming to the uncertainty in static environment, we propose Classic DSm (DSmC) model for sonar sensors and laser range finder, and construct the general basic belief assignment function (gbbaf) respectively. Generally speaking, the evidence sources are unreliable in physical system, so we must consider the discounting theory before we apply DSmT. At last, Pioneer II mobile robot serves as a simulation experimental platform. We build 3D grid map of belief layout, then mainly compare the effect of building map using DSmT and DST. Through this simulation experiment, it proves that DSmT is very successful and valid, especially in dealing with highly conflicting information. In short, this study not only finds a new method for building map under static environment, but also supplies with a theory foundation for us to further apply Hybrid DSmT (DSmH) to dynamic unknown environment and multi-robots- building map together.
