Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a comparative
study on two different methods for the evaluation of the equilibrium
point of a ship, core issue for designing an On Board Stability System
(OBSS) module that, starting from geometry information of a ship
hull, described by a discrete model in a standard format, and the
distribution of all weights onboard calculates the ship floating
conditions (in draught, heel and trim).
Abstract: Nowadays use of a new structural bracing system
called 'Knee Bracing System' have taken the specialists attention too
much. On the other hand nonlinear static analysis procedures in
estimate structures performance in earthquake time have taken
attention too much. One of these procedure is modal pushover
analysis (MPA) procedure. The accuracy of MPA procedure for
simple steel moment resisting frame has been verified and considered
in Chintanapakdee and Chopra-s article in 2003. Since the accuracy
of MPA procedure has not verified for semi-rigid steel frames with
knee bracing, we are going to get through with this matter in this
study. For this purpose, the selected structures are four frames with
different heights, 5 to 20 stories, will be designed according to AISC
criteria. Then MPA procedure is used for the same frames with
different rigidity percentiles of connections. The results of seismic
responses are compared with dynamic nonlinear response history
analysis as exact procedure and accuracy of MPA procedure is
evaluated. It seems that MPA procedure accuracy will come down by
reduction of the rigidity percentiles of semi-rigid connections.
Abstract: In the meantime, there were lots of hardware solutions like products or urban facilities for crime prevention in the public design area. Meanwhile, people have growing interest in public design so by making a village; community design in public design is getting active by the society. The system for crime prevention is actively done by the citizens who created the community. Regarding the social situation, in this project, we saw it as a kind of community design practices and researched about 'how does community design influence Crime prevention?' The purpose of this study is to propose the community design as a way of preventing the crime in the city. First, we found out about the definition, elements and methods of community design by reviewing the theory. And then, this study analyzed the case that was enforced in Seoul and organize the elements and methods of community design. This study can be refer to Public Design based on civil participation and make the community design area contribute to expand the way of solving social problems.
Abstract: This research is part of a broad program aimed at
advancing the science and technology involved in the rescue and
rehabilitation of oiled wildlife. One aspect of this research involves
the use of oil-sequestering magnetic particles for the removal of
contaminants from plumage – so-called “magnetic cleansing". This
treatment offers a number of advantages over conventional
detergent-based methods including portability - which offers the
possibility of providing a “quick clean" to the animal upon first
encounter in the field. This could be particularly advantageous
when the contaminant is toxic and/or corrosive and/or where there
is a delay in transporting the victim to a treatment centre. The
method could also be useful as part of a stabilization protocol when
large numbers of affected animals are awaiting treatment. This
presentation describes the design, development and testing of a
prototype field kit for providing a “quick clean" to contaminated
wildlife in the field.
Abstract: This paper presents methodologies for developing an
intelligent CAD system assisting in analysis and design of
reconfigurable special machines. It describes a procedure for
determining feasibility of utilizing these machines for a given part
and presents a model for developing an intelligent CAD system. The
system analyzes geometrical and topological information of the given
part to determine possibility of the part being produced by
reconfigurable special machines from a technical point of view. Also
feasibility of the process from a economical point of view is
analyzed. Then the system determines proper positioning of the part
considering details of machining features and operations needed.
This involves determination of operation types, cutting tools and the
number of working stations needed. Upon completion of this stage
the overall layout of the machine and machining equipment required
are determined.
Abstract: Wheeled Mobile Robots (WMRs) are built with their
Wheels- drive machine, Motors. Depend on their desire design of
WMR, Technicians made used of DC Motors for motion control. In
this paper, the author would like to analyze how to choose DC motor
to be balance with their applications of especially for WMR.
Specification of DC Motor that can be used with desire WMR is to
be determined by using MATLAB Simulink model. Therefore, this
paper is mainly focus on software application of MATLAB and
Control Technology. As the driving system of DC motor, a
Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) based control system is
designed including the assembly software technology and H-bridge
control circuit. This Driving system is used to drive two DC gear
motors which are used to control the motion of WMR. In this
analyzing process, the author mainly focus the drive system on
driving two DC gear motors that will control with Differential Drive
technique to the Wheeled Mobile Robot . For the design analysis of
Motor Driving System, PIC16F84A is used and five inputs of sensors
detected data are tested with five ON/OFF switches. The outputs of
PIC are the commands to drive two DC gear motors, inputs of Hbridge
circuit .In this paper, Control techniques of PIC
microcontroller and H-bridge circuit, Mechanism assignments of
WMR are combined and analyzed by mainly focusing with the
“Modeling and Simulink of DC Motor using MATLAB".
Abstract: An experimental and numerical study has been conducted to clarify heat transfer characteristics and effectiveness of a cross-flow heat exchanger employing staggered wing-shaped tubes at different angels of attack. The water-side Rew and the air-side Rea were at 5 x 102 and at from 1.8 x 103 to 9.7 x 103, respectively. The tubes arrangements were employed with various angles of attack θ1,2,3 from 0° to 330° at the considered Rea range. Correlation of Nu, St, as well as the heat transfer per unit pumping power (ε) in terms of Rea, design parameters for the studied bundle were presented. The temperature fields around the staggered wing-shaped tubes bundle were predicted by using commercial CFD FLUENT 6.3.26 software package. Results indicated that the heat transfer was increased by increasing the angle of attack from 0° to 45°, while the opposite was true for angles of attack from 135° to 180°. The best thermal performance and hence η of studied bundle was occurred at the lowest Rea and/or zero angle of attack. Comparisons between the experimental and numerical results of the present study and those, previously, obtained for similar available studies showed good agreements.
Abstract: We consider optimal channel equalization for MIMO
(multi-input/multi-output) time-varying channels in the sense of
MMSE (minimum mean-squared-error), where the observation noise
can be non-stationary. We show that all ZF (zero-forcing) receivers
can be parameterized in an affine form which eliminates completely
the ISI (inter-symbol-interference), and optimal channel equalizers
can be designed through minimization of the MSE (mean-squarederror)
between the detected signals and the transmitted signals,
among all ZF receivers. We demonstrate that the optimal channel
equalizer is a modified Kalman filter, and show that under the AWGN
(additive white Gaussian noise) assumption, the proposed optimal
channel equalizer minimizes the BER (bit error rate) among all
possible ZF receivers. Our results are applicable to optimal channel
equalization for DWMT (discrete wavelet multitone), multirate transmultiplexers,
OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing),
and DS (direct sequence) CDMA (code division multiple access)
wireless data communication systems. A design algorithm for optimal
channel equalization is developed, and several simulation examples
are worked out to illustrate the proposed design algorithm.
Abstract: The hospital and the health-care center of a
community, as a place for people-s life-care and health-care settings,
must provide more and better services for patients or residents. After
Establishing Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system -which is a
necessity- in the hospital, providing pervasive services is a further
step. Our objective in this paper is to use pervasive computing in a
case study of healthcare, based on EMR database that coordinates
application services over network to form a service environment for
medical and health-care. Our method also categorizes the hospital
spaces into 3 spaces: Public spaces, Private spaces and Isolated
spaces. Although, there are many projects about using pervasive
computing in healthcare, but all of them concentrate on the disease
recognition, designing smart cloths, or provide services only for
patient. The proposed method is implemented in a hospital. The
obtained results show that it is suitable for our purpose.
Abstract: Development of artificial neural network (ANN) for
prediction of aluminum workpieces' surface roughness in ultrasonicvibration
assisted turning (UAT) has been the subject of the present
study. Tool wear as the main cause of surface roughness was also
investigated. ANN was trained through experimental data obtained
on the basis of full factorial design of experiments. Various
influential machining parameters were taken into consideration. It
was illustrated that a multilayer perceptron neural network could
efficiently model the surface roughness as the response of the
network, with an error less than ten percent. The performance of the
trained network was verified by further experiments. The results of
UAT were compared with the results of conventional turning
experiments carried out with similar machining parameters except for
the vibration amplitude whence considerable reduction was observed
in the built-up edge and the surface roughness.
Abstract: There are very complex communication systems, as
the multifunction radar, MFAR (Multi-Function Array Radar), where
functions are integrated all together, and simultaneously are
performed the classic functions of tracking and surveillance, as all
the functions related to the communication, countermeasures, and
calibration. All these functions are divided into the tasks to execute.
The task scheduler is a key element of the radar, since it does the
planning and distribution of energy and time resources to be shared
and used by all tasks. This paper presents schedulers based on the use
of multiple queue. Several schedulers have been designed and
studied, and it has been made a comparative analysis of different
performed schedulers. The tests and experiments have been done by
means of system software simulation. Finally a suitable set of radar
characteristics has been selected to evaluate the behavior of the task
scheduler working.
Abstract: Encryption and decryption in RSA are done by modular exponentiation which is achieved by repeated modular multiplication. Hence efficiency of modular multiplication directly determines the efficiency of RSA cryptosystem. This paper designs a Modified Montgomery Modular Multiplication in which addition of operands is computed by 4:2 compressor. The basic logic operations in addition are partitioned over two iterations such that parallel computations are performed. This reduces the critical path delay of proposed Montgomery design. The proposed design and RSA are implemented on Virtex 2 and Virtex 5 FPGAs. The two factors partitioning and parallelism have improved the frequency and throughput of proposed design.
Abstract: The application of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) controller to improve the transient stability performance of a power system is thoroughly investigated in this paper. The design problem of SSSC controller is formulated as an optimization problem and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Technique is employed to search for optimal controller parameters. By minimizing the time-domain based objective function, in which the deviation in the oscillatory rotor angle of the generator is involved; transient stability performance of the system is improved. The proposed controller is tested on a weakly connected power system subjected to different severe disturbances. The non-linear simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller and its ability to provide efficient damping of low frequency oscillations. It is also observed that the proposed SSSC controller improves greatly the voltage profile of the system under severe disturbances.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to study the analysis and testing for determining the torsional stiffness of the student formula-s space frame. From past study, the space frame for Chulalongkorn University Student Formula team used in 2011 TSAE Auto Challenge Student Formula in Thailand was designed by considering required mass and torsional stiffness based on the numerical method and experimental method. The numerical result was compared with the experimental results to verify the torsional stiffness of the space frame. It can be seen from the large error of torsional stiffness of 2011 frame that the experimental result can not verify by the numerical analysis due to the different between the numerical model and experimental setting. In this paper, the numerical analysis and experiment of the same 2011 frame model is performed by improving the model setting. The improvement of both numerical analysis and experiment are discussed to confirm that the models from both methods are same. After the frame was analyzed and tested, the results are compared to verify the torsional stiffness of the frame. It can be concluded that the improved analysis and experiments can used to verify the torsional stiffness of the space frame.
Abstract: Since the actuator capacity is limited, in the real
application of active control systems under sever earthquakes it is
conceivable that the actuators saturate, hence the actuator saturation
should be considered as a constraint in design of optimal controllers.
In this paper optimal design of active controllers for nonlinear
structures by considering actuator saturation, has been studied. The
proposed method for designing optimal controllers is based on
defining an optimization problem which the objective has been to
minimize the maximum displacement of structure when a limited
capacity for actuator has been used. To this end a single degree of
freedom (SDF) structure with a bilinear hysteretic behavior has been
simulated under a white noise ground acceleration of different
amplitudes. Active tendon control mechanism, comprised of prestressed
tendons and an actuator, and extended nonlinear Newmark
method based instantaneous optimal control algorithm have been
used. To achieve the best results, the weights corresponding to
displacement, velocity, acceleration and control force in the
performance index have been optimized by the Distributed Genetic
Algorithm (DGA). Results show the effectiveness of the proposed
method in considering actuator saturation. Also based on the
numerical simulations it can be concluded that the actuator capacity
and the average value of required control force are two important
factors in designing nonlinear controllers which consider the actuator
saturation.
Abstract: This paper describes various stages of design and prototyping of a modular robot for use in various industrial applications. The major goal of current research has been to design and make different robotic joints at low cost capable of being assembled together in any given order for achieving various robot configurations. Five different types of joins were designed and manufactured where extensive research has been carried out on the design of each joint in order to achieve optimal strength, size, modularity, and price. This paper presents various stages of research and development undertaken to engineer these joints that include material selection, manufacturing, and strength analysis. The outcome of this research addresses the birth of a new generation of modular industrial robots with a wider range of applications and greater efficiency.
Abstract: These This paper looks into frameworks which aim at
furthering the discussion of the role of regenerative design practices
in a city-s historic core and the tool of urban design to achieve urban
revitalization on the island of Cyprus. It also examines the region-s
demographic mix, the effectiveness of its governmental coordination
and the strategies of adaptive reuse and strategic investments in older
areas with existing infrastructure. The two main prongs of
investigation will consider the effect of the existing and proposed
changes in the physical infrastructure and fabric of the city, as well as
the catalytic effect of sustainable urban design practices. Through this
process, the work hopes to integrate the contained potential within
the existing historic core and the contributions and participation of
the migrant and immigrant populations to the local economy. It also
examines ways in which this coupling of factors can bring to the front
the positive effects of this combined effort on an otherwise sluggish
local redevelopment effort. The data for this study is being collected
and organized as part of ongoing urban design and development
student workshop efforts in urban planning and design education.
The work is presented in graphic form and includes data collected
from interviews with study area organizations and the community at
large. Planning work is also based on best practices initiated by the
staff of the Nicosia Master Plan task force, which coordinates holistic
planning efforts for the historic center of the city of Nicosia.
Abstract: In this paper, we have combined some spatial derivatives with the optimised time derivative proposed by Tam and Webb in order to approximate the linear advection equation which is given by = 0. Ôêé Ôêé + Ôêé Ôêé x f t u These spatial derivatives are as follows: a standard 7-point 6 th -order central difference scheme (ST7), a standard 9-point 8 th -order central difference scheme (ST9) and optimised schemes designed by Tam and Webb, Lockard et al., Zingg et al., Zhuang and Chen, Bogey and Bailly. Thus, these seven different spatial derivatives have been coupled with the optimised time derivative to obtain seven different finite-difference schemes to approximate the linear advection equation. We have analysed the variation of the modified wavenumber and group velocity, both with respect to the exact wavenumber for each spatial derivative. The problems considered are the 1-D propagation of a Boxcar function, propagation of an initial disturbance consisting of a sine and Gaussian function and the propagation of a Gaussian profile. It is known that the choice of the cfl number affects the quality of results in terms of dissipation and dispersion characteristics. Based on the numerical experiments solved and numerical methods used to approximate the linear advection equation, it is observed in this work, that the quality of results is dependent on the choice of the cfl number, even for optimised numerical methods. The errors from the numerical results have been quantified into dispersion and dissipation using a technique devised by Takacs. Also, the quantity, Exponential Error for Low Dispersion and Low Dissipation, eeldld has been computed from the numerical results. Moreover, based on this work, it has been found that when the quantity, eeldld can be used as a measure of the total error. In particular, the total error is a minimum when the eeldld is a minimum.
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to determine the
knowledge and skills possessed by instructional design (ID)
practitioners in Malaysia. As ID is a relatively new field in the
country and there seems to be an absence of any studies on its
community of practice, the main objective of this research is to
discover the tasks and activities performed by ID practitioners in
educational and corporate organizations as suggested by the
International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and
Instruction. This includes finding out the ID models applied in the
course of their work. This research also attempts to identify the
barriers and issues as to why some ID tasks and activities are rarely
or never conducted. The methodology employed in this descriptive
study was a survey questionnaire sent to 30 instructional designers
nationwide. The results showed that majority of the tasks and
activities are carried out frequently enough but omissions do occur
due to reasons such as it being out of job scope, the decision was
already made at a higher level, and the lack of knowledge and skills.
Further investigations of a qualitative manner should be conducted
to achieve a more in-depth understanding of ID practices in
Malaysia
Abstract: This paper presents a low cost design of heart beat monitoring device using reflectance mode PhotoPlethysmography (PPG). PPG is known for its simple construction, ease of use and cost effectiveness and can provide information about the changes in cardiac activity as well as aid in earlier non-invasive diagnostics. The proposed device is divided into three phases. First is the detection of pulses through the fingertip. The signal is then passed to the signal processing unit for the purpose of amplification, filtering and digitizing. Finally the heart rate is calculated and displayed on the computer using parallel port interface. The paper is concluded with prototyping of the device followed by verification procedure of the heartbeat signal obtained in laboratory setting.
