Abstract: This paper deals with the application for contentbased
image retrieval to extract color feature from natural images
stored in the image database by segmenting the image through
clustering. We employ a class of nonparametric techniques in which
the data points are regarded as samples from an unknown probability
density. Explicit computation of the density is avoided by using the
mean shift procedure, a robust clustering technique, which does not
require prior knowledge of the number of clusters, and does not
constrain the shape of the clusters. A non-parametric technique for
the recovery of significant image features is presented and
segmentation module is developed using the mean shift algorithm to
segment each image. In these algorithms, the only user set parameter
is the resolution of the analysis and either gray level or color images
are accepted as inputs. Extensive experimental results illustrate
excellent performance.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the experimental impacts of
ultrasonic, carbonate and a combination of them on the quality of
fresh kiwi juice. Today, non-thermal methods like ultrasonic, which
have imperceptible effects on some properties of the juice such as
taste, flavor and color, are commonly used for killing
microorganisms.In this paper, some properties of kiwi fruit juice
under ultrasonic, carbonate and a combination of them has been
researched. Those properties include pH, acidity, transparency and
Brix. Its impact on microorganisms has been studied as well.The
results show that using a combination of carbonate and sonicate make
the cavitation more severe without a perceptible effect on nonactivation
of microorganisms.
Abstract: Degradation of polymeric insulation systems of
electrical equipments increases the space charge density and the
concentration of electrical dipoles. By consequence, the maximum
values and the slopes of absorption/resorption (A/R) currents can
change with insulation systems ageing. In this paper, an analysis of
the nature of the A/R currents and the importance of their
components, especially the polarization current and the current given
by the space charge, is presented. The experimental study concerns
the A/R currents measurements of plane samples (made from
CALMICAGLAS tapes), virgin and thermally accelerated aged. The
obtained results show that the ageing process produces an increase of
the values and a decrease of shapes of the A/R currents. Finally, the
possibility of estimating insulations ageing state and lifetime from
A/R currents measurements is discussed.
Abstract: The paper provides biomasses characteristics by
proximate analysis (volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash) and
ultimate analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen) for the
prediction of the heating value equations. The heating value
estimation of various biomasses can be used as an energy evaluation.
Thirteen types of biomass were studied. Proximate analysis was
investigated by mass loss method and infrared moisture analyzer.
Ultimate analysis was analyzed by CHNO analyzer. The heating
values varied from 15 to 22.4MJ kg-1. Correlations of the calculated
heating value with proximate and ultimate analyses were undertaken
using multiple regression analysis and summarized into three and two
equations, respectively. Correlations based on proximate analysis
illustrated that deviation of calculated heating values from
experimental heating values was higher than the correlations based
on ultimate analysis.
Abstract: The present paper deals with the experimental and
computational study of axial collapse of the aluminum metallic shells
having combined tube-frusta geometry between two parallel plates.
Shells were having bottom two third lengths as frusta and remaining
top one third lengths as tube. Shells were compressed to recognize
their modes of collapse and associated energy absorption capability.
An axisymmetric Finite Element computational model of collapse
process is presented and analysed, using a non-linear FE code
FORGE2. Six noded isoparametric triangular elements were used to
discretize the deforming shell. The material of the shells was
idealized as rigid visco-plastic. To validate the computational model
experimental and computed results of the deformed shapes and their
corresponding load-compression and energy-compression curves
were compared. With the help of the obtained results progress of the
axisymmetric mode of collapse has been presented, analysed and
discussed.
Abstract: On a such wide-area environment as a Grid, data
placement is an important aspect of distributed database systems. In
this paper, we address the problem of initial placement of database
no-replicated fragments in Grid architecture. We propose a graph
based approach that considers resource restrictions. The goal is to
optimize the use of computing, storage and communication
resources. The proposed approach is developed in two phases: in the
first phase, we perform fragment grouping using knowledge about
fragments dependency and, in the second phase, we determine an
efficient placement of the fragment groups on the Grid. We also
show, via experimental analysis that our approach gives solutions
that are close to being optimal for different databases and Grid
configurations.
Abstract: A novel low-cost impedance control structure is
proposed for monitoring the contact force between end-effector and
environment without installing an expensive force/torque sensor.
Theoretically, the end-effector contact force can be estimated from the
superposition of each joint control torque. There have a nonlinear
matrix mapping function between each joint motor control input and
end-effector actuating force/torques vector. This new force control
structure can be implemented based on this estimated mapping matrix.
First, the robot end-effector is manipulated to specified positions, then
the force controller is actuated based on the hall sensor current
feedback of each joint motor. The model-free fuzzy sliding mode
control (FSMC) strategy is employed to design the position and force
controllers, respectively. All the hardware circuits and software
control programs are designed on an Altera Nios II embedded
development kit to constitute an embedded system structure for a
retrofitted Mitsubishi 5 DOF robot. Experimental results show that PI
and FSMC force control algorithms can achieve reasonable contact
force monitoring objective based on this hardware control structure.
Abstract: Time series forecasting is an important and widely
popular topic in the research of system modeling. This paper
describes how to use the hybrid PSO-RLSE neuro-fuzzy learning
approach to the problem of time series forecasting. The PSO
algorithm is used to update the premise parameters of the
proposed prediction system, and the RLSE is used to update the
consequence parameters. Thanks to the hybrid learning (HL)
approach for the neuro-fuzzy system, the prediction performance
is excellent and the speed of learning convergence is much faster
than other compared approaches. In the experiments, we use the
well-known Mackey-Glass chaos time series. According to the
experimental results, the prediction performance and accuracy in
time series forecasting by the proposed approach is much better
than other compared approaches, as shown in Table IV. Excellent
prediction performance by the proposed approach has been
observed.
Abstract: In this paper, a new approach for quality assessment
tasks in lossy compressed digital video is proposed. The research
activity is based on the visual fixation data recorded by an eye
tracker. The method involved both a new paradigm for subjective
quality evaluation and the subsequent statistical analysis to match
subjective scores provided by the observer to the data obtained from
the eye tracker experiments. The study brings improvements to the
state of the art, as it solves some problems highlighted in literature.
The experiments prove that data obtained from an eye tracker can be
used to classify videos according to the level of impairment due to
compression. The paper presents the methodology, the experimental
results and their interpretation. Conclusions suggest that the eye
tracker can be useful in quality assessment, if data are collected and
analyzed in a proper way.
Abstract: A group of Stellite alloys are studied in consideration
of temperature effects on their hardness and wear resistance. The
hardness test is conducted on a micro-hardness tester with a hot stage
equipped that allows heating the specimen up to 650°C. The wear
resistance of each alloy is evaluated using a pin-on-disc tribometer
with a heating furnace built-in that provides the temperature capacity
up to 450°C. The experimental results demonstrate that the hardness
and wear resistance of Stellite alloys behave differently at room
temperature and at high temperatures. The wear resistance of Stellite
alloys at room temperature mainly depends on their carbon content and
also influenced by the tungsten content in the alloys. However, at high
temperatures the wear mechanisms of Stellite alloys become more
complex, involving multiple factors. The relationships between
chemical composition, microstructure, hardness and wear resistance of
these alloys are studied, with focus on temperature effect on these
relations.
Abstract: Tool wear and surface roughness prediction plays a
significant role in machining industry for proper planning and control
of machining parameters and optimization of cutting conditions. This
paper deals with developing an artificial neural network (ANN)
model as a function of cutting parameters in turning steel under
minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). A feed-forward
backpropagation network with twenty five hidden neurons has been
selected as the optimum network. The co-efficient of determination
(R2) between model predictions and experimental values are 0.9915,
0.9906, 0.9761 and 0.9627 in terms of VB, VM, VS and Ra
respectively. The results imply that the model can be used easily to
forecast tool wear and surface roughness in response to cutting
parameters.
Abstract: Renewable and non-renewable resource constraints have been vast studied in theoretical fields of project scheduling problems. However, although cumulative resources are widespread in practical cases, the literature on project scheduling problems subject to these resources is scant. So in order to study this type of resources more, in this paper we use the framework of a resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with finish-start precedence relations between activities and subject to the cumulative resources in addition to the renewable resources. We develop a branch and bound algorithm for this problem customizing precedence tree algorithm of RCPSP. We perform extensive experimental analysis on the algorithm to check its effectiveness and performance for solving different instances of the problem in question.
Abstract: Methanol-to-olefins coupled with transformation of
coal or natural gas to methanol gives an interesting and promising way
to produce ethylene and propylene. To investigate solid concentration
in gas-solid fluidized bed for methanol-to-olefins process catalyzed by
SAPO-34, a cold model experiment system is established in this paper.
The system comprises a gas distributor in a 300mm internal diameter
and 5000mm height acrylic column, the fiber optic probe system and
series of cyclones. The experiments are carried out at ambient
conditions and under different superficial gas velocity ranging from
0.3930m/s to 0.7860m/s and different initial bed height ranging from
600mm to 1200mm. The effects of radial distance, axial distance,
superficial gas velocity, initial bed height on solid concentration in the
bed are discussed. The effects of distributor shape and porosity on
solid concentration are also discussed. The time-averaged solid
concentration profiles under different conditions are obtained.
Abstract: Scheduling algorithms are used in operating systems
to optimize the usage of processors. One of the most efficient
algorithms for scheduling is Multi-Layer Feedback Queue (MLFQ)
algorithm which uses several queues with different quanta. The most
important weakness of this method is the inability to define the
optimized the number of the queues and quantum of each queue. This
weakness has been improved in IMLFQ scheduling algorithm.
Number of the queues and quantum of each queue affect the response
time directly. In this paper, we review the IMLFQ algorithm for
solving these problems and minimizing the response time. In this
algorithm Recurrent Neural Network has been utilized to find both
the number of queues and the optimized quantum of each queue.
Also in order to prevent any probable faults in processes' response
time computation, a new fault tolerant approach has been presented.
In this approach we use combinational software redundancy to
prevent the any probable faults. The experimental results show that
using the IMLFQ algorithm results in better response time in
comparison with other scheduling algorithms also by using fault
tolerant mechanism we improve IMLFQ performance.
Abstract: To increase reliability of face recognition system, the
system must be able to distinguish real face from a copy of face such
as a photograph. In this paper, we propose a fast and memory efficient
method of live face detection for embedded face recognition system,
based on the analysis of the movement of the eyes. We detect eyes in
sequential input images and calculate variation of each eye region to
determine whether the input face is a real face or not. Experimental
results show that the proposed approach is competitive and promising
for live face detection.
Abstract: This study investigates the capacity of granular
activated carbon (GAC) for the storage of methane through the
equilibrium adsorption. An experimental apparatus consist of a dual
adsorption vessel was set up for the measurement of equilibrium
adsorption of methane on GAC using volumetric technique (pressure
decay). Experimental isotherms of methane adsorption were
determined by the measurement of equilibrium uptake of methane in
different pressures (0-50 bar) and temperatures (285.15-328.15°K).
The experimental data was fitted to Freundlich and Langmuir
equations to determine the model isotherm. The results show that the
experimental data is equally well fitted by the both model isotherms.
Using the experimental data obtained in different temperatures the
isosteric heat of methane adsorption was also calculated by the
Clausius-Clapeyron equation from the Sips isotherm model. Results
of isosteric heat of adsorption show that decreasing temperature or
increasing methane uptake by GAC decrease the isosteric heat of
methane adsorption.
Abstract: This paper presents an experimental case using sensory thermography to describe temperatures behavior on median nerve once an activity of repetitive motion was done. Thermography is a noninvasive technique without biological hazard and not harm at all times and has been applied in many experiments to seek for temperature patterns that help to understand diseases like cancer and cumulative trauma disorders (CTD’s). An infrared sensory thermography technology was developed to execute this study. Three women in good shape were selected for the repetitive motion tests for 4 days, two right-handed women and 1 left handed woman, two sensory thermographers were put on both median nerve wrists to get measures. The evaluation time was of 3 hours 30 minutes in a controlled temperature, 20 minutes of stabilization time at the beginning and end of the operation. Temperatures distributions are statistically evaluated and showed similar temperature patterns behavior.
Abstract: In this paper, a vision based system has been used for
controlling an industrial 3P Cartesian robot. The vision system will
recognize the target and control the robot by obtaining images from
environment and processing them. At the first stage, images from
environment are changed to a grayscale mode then it can diverse and
identify objects and noises by using a threshold objects which are
stored in different frames and then the main object will be
recognized. This will control the robot to achieve the target. A vision
system can be an appropriate tool for measuring errors of a robot in a
situation where the experimental test is conducted for a 3P robot.
Finally, the international standard ANSI/RIA R15.05-2 is used for
evaluating the path-related characteristics of the robot. To evaluate
the performance of the proposed method experimental test is carried
out.
Abstract: This paper deals with the synthesis of fuzzy controller
applied to a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with a
guaranteed H∞ performance. To design this fuzzy controller,
nonlinear model of the PMSM is approximated by Takagi-Sugeno
fuzzy model (T-S fuzzy model), then the so-called parallel
distributed compensation (PDC) is employed. Next, we derive the
property of the H∞ norm. The latter is cast in terms of linear matrix
inequalities (LMI-s) while minimizing the H∞ norm of the transfer
function between the disturbance and the error ( ) ev T . The
experimental and simulations results were conducted on a permanent
magnet synchronous machine to illustrate the effects of the fuzzy
modelling and the controller design via the PDC.
Abstract: This paper describes an experimental investigation of
the drying behavior and conditions of rosehip in a convective
cyclone-type dryer. Drying experiments were conducted at air inlet
temperatures of 50, 60 and 70 o C and air velocities of 0.5, 1 and 1.5
ms–1. The parametric values obtained from the experiments were
fitted to the Newton mathematical models. Consequently, the drying
model developed by Newton model showed good agreement with the
data obtained from the experiments. Concluding, it was obtained that;
(i) the temperature is the major effect on the drying process, (ii) air
velocity has low effect on the drying of rosehip, (iii) the C-vitamin is
observed to change according to the temperature, moisture, drying
time and flow types. The changing ratio is found to be in the range of
0.70-0.74.
