Abstract: This paper presents a tested research concept that
implements a complex evolutionary algorithm, genetic algorithm
(GA), in a multi-microcontroller environment. Parallel Distributed
Genetic Algorithm (PDGA) is employed in adaptive beam forming
technique to reduce power usage of adaptive antenna at WCDMA
base station. Adaptive antenna has dynamic beam that requires more
advanced beam forming algorithm such as genetic algorithm which
requires heavy computation and memory space. Microcontrollers are
low resource platforms that are normally not associated with GAs,
which are typically resource intensive. The aim of this project was to
design a cooperative multiprocessor system by expanding the role of
small scale PIC microcontrollers to optimize WCDMA base station
transmitter power. Implementation results have shown that PDGA
multi-microcontroller system returned optimal transmitted power
compared to conventional GA.
Abstract: In this paper we present a novel method, which
reduces the computational complexity of abrupt cut detection. We
have proposed fast algorithm, where the similarity of frames within
defined step is evaluated instead of comparing successive frames.
Based on the results of simulation on large video collection, the
proposed fast algorithm is able to achieve 80% reduction of needed
frames comparisons compared to actually used methods without the
shot cut detection accuracy degradation.

Abstract: This paper presents the theoretical investigation of a
slotted patch antenna. The main objective of proposed work is to
obtain a large bandwidth antenna with reduced size. The antenna has
a compact size of 21.1mm x 20.25mm x 8.5mm. Two designs with
minor variation are studied which provide wide impedance
bandwidths of 24.056% and 25.63% respectively with the use of
parasitic elements when excited by a probe feed. The advantages of
this configuration are its compact size and the wide range of
frequencies covered. A parametric study is also conducted to
investigate the characteristics of the antenna under different
conditions. The measured return loss and radiation pattern indicate
the suitability of this design for WLAN applications, namely, Wi-
Max, 802.11a/b/g and ISM bands.
Abstract: Warranty is a powerful marketing tool for the
manufacturer and a good protection for both the manufacturer and the
customer. However, warranty always involves additional costs to the
manufacturer, which depend on product reliability characteristics and
warranty parameters. This paper presents an approach to optimisation
of warranty parameters for known product failure distribution to
reduce the warranty costs to the manufacturer while retaining the
promotional function of the warranty. Combination free replacement
and pro-rata warranty policy is chosen as a model and the length of
free replacement period and pro-rata policy period are varied, as well
as the coefficients that define the pro-rata cost function. Multiparametric
warranty optimisation is done by using genetic algorithm.
Obtained results are guideline for the manufacturer to choose the
warranty policy that minimises the costs and maximises the profit.
Abstract: The third generation (3G) of cellular system adopted
the spread spectrum as solution for the transmission of the data in the
physical layer. Contrary to systems IS-95 or CDMAOne (systems
with spread spectrum of the preceding generation), the new standard,
called Universal Mobil Telecommunications System (UMTS), uses
long codes in the down link. The system is conceived for the vocal
communication and the transmission of the data. In particular, the
down link is very important, because of the asymmetrical request of
the data, i.e., more remote loading towards the mobiles than towards
the basic station. Moreover, the UMTS uses for the down link an
orthogonal spreading out with a variable factor of spreading out
(OVSF for Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor). This
characteristic makes it possible to increase the flow of data of one or
more users by reducing their factor of spreading out without
changing the factor of spreading out of other users. In the current
standard of the UMTS, two techniques to increase the performances
of the down link were proposed, the diversity of sending antenna and
the codes space-time. These two techniques fight only fainding. The
receiver proposed for the mobil station is the RAKE, but one can
imagine a receiver more sophisticated, able to reduce the interference
between users and the impact of the coloured noise and interferences
to narrow band. In this context, where the users have long codes
synchronized with variable factor of spreading out and ignorance by
the mobile of the other active codes/users, the use of the sequences of
code pseudo-noises different lengths is presented in the form of one
of the most appropriate solutions.
Abstract: In this paper we investigate the electrical
characteristics of a new structure of gate all around strained silicon
nanowire field effect transistors (FETs) with dual dielectrics by
changing the radius (RSiGe) of silicon-germanium (SiGe) wire and
gate dielectric. Indeed the effect of high-κ dielectric on Field Induced
Barrier Lowering (FIBL) has been studied. Due to the higher electron
mobility in tensile strained silicon, the n-type FETs with strained
silicon channel have better drain current compare with the pure Si
one. In this structure gate dielectric divided in two parts, we have
used high-κ dielectric near the source and low-κ dielectric near the
drain to reduce the short channel effects. By this structure short
channel effects such as FIBL will be reduced indeed by increasing
the RSiGe, ID-VD characteristics will be improved. The leakage
current and transfer characteristics, the threshold-voltage (Vt), the
drain induced barrier height lowering (DIBL), are estimated with
respect to, gate bias (VG), RSiGe and different gate dielectrics. For
short channel effects, such as DIBL, gate all around strained silicon
nanowire FET have similar characteristics with the pure Si one while
dual dielectrics can improve short channel effects in this structure.
Abstract: Different problems may causes distortion of the rotor,
and hence vibration, which is the most severe damage of the turbine
rotors. In many years different techniques have been developed for
the straightening of bent rotors. The method for straightening can be
selected according to initial information from preliminary inspections
and tests such as nondestructive tests, chemical analysis, run out tests
and also a knowledge of the shaft material. This article covers the
various causes of excessive bends and then some applicable common
straightening methods are reviewed. Finally, hot spotting is opted for
a particular bent rotor. A 325 MW steam turbine rotor is modeled and
finite element analyses are arranged to investigate this straightening
process. Results of experimental data show that performing the exact
hot spot straightening process reduced the bending of the rotor
significantly.
Abstract: Palladium-catalyzed hydrodechlorination is a
promising alternative for the treatment of environmentally relevant
water bodies, such as groundwater, contaminated with chlorinated
organic compounds (COCs). In the aqueous phase
hydrodechlorination of COCs, Pd-based catalysts were found to have
a very high catalytic activity. However, the full utilization of the
catalyst-s potential is impeded by the sensitivity of the catalyst to
poisoning and deactivation induced by reduced sulfur compounds
(e.g. sulfides). Several regenerants have been tested before to recover
the performance of sulfide-fouled Pd catalyst. But these only
delivered partial success with respect to re-establishment of the
catalyst activity. In this study, the deactivation behaviour of
Pd/Al2O3 in the presence of sulfide was investigated. Subsequent to
total deactivation the catalyst was regenerated in the aqueous phase
using potassium permanganate. Under neutral pH condition,
oxidative regeneration with permanganate delivered a slow recovery
of catalyst activity. However, changing the pH of the bulk solution to
acidic resulted in the complete recovery of catalyst activity within a
regeneration time of about half an hour. These findings suggest the
superiority of permanganate as regenerant in re-activating Pd/Al2O3
by oxidizing Pd-bound sulfide.
Abstract: It is necessary to evaluate the bridges conditions and
strengthen bridges or parts of them. The reinforcement necessary due
to some reasons can be summarized as: First, a changing in use of
bridge could produce internal forces in a part of structural which
exceed the existing cross-sectional capacity. Second, bridges may
also need reinforcement because damage due to external factors
which reduced the cross-sectional resistance to external loads. One of
other factors could listed here its misdesign in some details, like
safety of bridge or part of its. This article identify the design demands

condition are good. T beam span No 10 were observed, crack
extended upward along the ribbed T beam, and continue to the T
beam flange. Crack width varying between 0.1mm to 0.4mm, the

bending strength especially at for T beam section.
Abstract: Post growth annealing of solution grown ZnO
nanowire array is performed under controlled oxygen ambience. The
role of annealing over surface defects and their consequence on
dark/photo-conductivity and photosensitivity of nanowire array is
investigated. Surface defect properties are explored using various
measurement tools such as contact angle, photoluminescence, Raman
spectroscopy and XPS measurements. The contact angle of the NW
films reduces due to oxygen annealing and nanowire film surface
changes from hydrophobic (96°) to hydrophilic (16°). Raman and
XPS spectroscopy reveal that oxygen annealing improves the crystal
quality of the nanowire films. The defect band emission intensity
(relative to band edge emission, ID/IUV) reduces from 1.3 to 0.2 after
annealing at 600 °C at 10 SCCM flow of oxygen. An order
enhancement in dark conductivity is observed in O2 annealed
samples, while photoconductivity is found to be slightly reduced due
to lower concentration of surface related oxygen defects.
Abstract: Moisture is an important consideration in many
aspects ranging from irrigation, soil chemistry, golf course, corrosion
and erosion, road conditions, weather predictions, livestock feed
moisture levels, water seepage etc. Vegetation and crops always
depend more on the moisture available at the root level than on
precipitation occurrence. In this paper, design of an instrument is
discussed which tells about the variation in the moisture contents of
soil. This is done by measuring the amount of water content in soil by
finding the variation in capacitance of soil with the help of a
capacitive sensor. The greatest advantage of soil moisture sensor is
reduced water consumption. The sensor is also be used to set lower
and upper threshold to maintain optimum soil moisture saturation and
minimize water wilting, contributes to deeper plant root growth
,reduced soil run off /leaching and less favorable condition for insects
and fungal diseases. Capacitance method is preferred because, it
provides absolute amount of water content and also measures water
content at any depth.
Abstract: Bluetooth is a personal wireless communication
technology and is being applied in many scenarios. It is an emerging
standard for short range, low cost, low power wireless access
technology. Current existing MAC (Medium Access Control)
scheduling schemes only provide best-effort service for all masterslave
connections. It is very challenging to provide QoS (Quality of
Service) support for different connections due to the feature of
Master Driven TDD (Time Division Duplex). However, there is no
solution available to support both delay and bandwidth guarantees
required by real time applications. This paper addresses the issue of
how to enhance QoS support in a Bluetooth piconet. The Bluetooth
specification proposes a Round Robin scheduler as possible solution
for scheduling the transmissions in a Bluetooth Piconet. We propose
an algorithm which will reduce the bandwidth waste and enhance the
efficiency of network. We define token counters to estimate traffic of
real-time slaves. To increase bandwidth utilization, a back-off
mechanism is then presented for best-effort slaves to decrease the
frequency of polling idle slaves. Simulation results demonstrate that
our scheme achieves better performance over the Round Robin
scheduling.
Abstract: In research on natural ventilation, and passive cooling
with forced convection, is essential to know how heat flows in a solid
object and the pattern of temperature distribution on their surfaces,
and eventually how air flows through and convects heat from the
surfaces of steel under roof. This paper presents some results from
running the computational fluid dynamic program (CFD) by
comparison between natural ventilation and forced convection within
roof attic that is received directly from solar radiation. The CFD
program for modeling air flow inside roof attic has been modified to
allow as two cases. First case, the analysis under natural ventilation,
is closed area in roof attic and second case, the analysis under forced
convection, is opened area in roof attic. These extend of all cases to
available predictions of variations such as temperature, pressure, and
mass flow rate distributions in each case within roof attic. The
comparison shows that this CFD program is an effective model for
predicting air flow of temperature and heat transfer coefficient
distribution within roof attic. The result shows that forced convection
can help to reduce heat transfer through roof attic and an around area
of steel core has temperature inner zone lower than natural
ventilation type. The different temperature on the steel core of roof
attic of two cases was 10-15 oK.
Abstract: The development of the signal compression
algorithms is having compressive progress. These algorithms are
continuously improved by new tools and aim to reduce, an average,
the number of bits necessary to the signal representation by means of
minimizing the reconstruction error. The following article proposes
the compression of Arabic speech signal by a hybrid method
combining the wavelet transform and the linear prediction. The
adopted approach rests, on one hand, on the original signal
decomposition by ways of analysis filters, which is followed by the
compression stage, and on the other hand, on the application of the
order 5, as well as, the compression signal coefficients. The aim of
this approach is the estimation of the predicted error, which will be
coded and transmitted. The decoding operation is then used to
reconstitute the original signal. Thus, the adequate choice of the
bench of filters is useful to the transform in necessary to increase the
compression rate and induce an impercevable distortion from an
auditive point of view.
Abstract: Detection of incipient abnormal events is important to
improve safety and reliability of machine operations and reduce losses
caused by failures. Improper set-ups or aligning of parts often leads to
severe problems in many machines. The construction of prediction
models for predicting faulty conditions is quite essential in making
decisions on when to perform machine maintenance. This paper
presents a multivariate calibration monitoring approach based on the
statistical analysis of machine measurement data. The calibration
model is used to predict two faulty conditions from historical reference
data. This approach utilizes genetic algorithms (GA) based variable
selection, and we evaluate the predictive performance of several
prediction methods using real data. The results shows that the
calibration model based on supervised probabilistic principal
component analysis (SPPCA) yielded best performance in this work.
By adopting a proper variable selection scheme in calibration models,
the prediction performance can be improved by excluding
non-informative variables from their model building steps.
Abstract: Failure in mastery of motor skills proficiency during
childhood has been seen as a detrimental factor for children to be
physically active. Lack of motor skills proficiency tends to reduce
children’s competency and confidence level to participate in physical
activity. As a consequence of less participation in physical activity,
children will turn to be overweight and obese. It has been suggested
that children who master motor skill proficiency will be more
involved in physical activity thus preventing them from being
overweight. Obesity has become a serious childhood health issues
worldwide. Previous studies have found that children who were
overweight and obese were generally less active however these
studies focused on one gender. This study aims to compare motor
skill proficiency of underweight, normal-weight, overweight and
obese young boys as well as to determine the relationship between
motor skills proficiency and body composition. 112 boys aged
between 8 to 10 years old participated in this study. Participants were
assigned to four groups; underweight, normal-weight, overweight and
obese using BMI-age percentile chart for children. Bruininks-
Oseretsky Test Second Edition-Short Form was administered to
assess their motor skill proficiency. Meanwhile, body composition
was determined by the skinfold thickness measurement. Result
indicated that underweight and normal children were superior in
motor skills proficiency compared to overweight and obese children
(p < 0.05). A significant strong inverse correlation between motor
skills proficiency and body composition (r = -0.849) is noted. The
findings of this study could be explained by non-contributory mass
that carried by overweight and obese children leads to biomechanical
movement inefficiency which will become detrimental to motor skills
proficiency. It can be concluded that motor skills proficiency is
inversely correlated with body composition.
Abstract: An experiment was implemented in a filed in the south of Morocco to evaluate the effects of domestic treated wastewater use for irrigation of amaranth crop under semi-arid conditions. Three varieties (A0020, A0057 & A211) were tested and irrigated using domestic treated wastewater EC1 (0,92 dS/m) as control, EC3 (3dS/m) and EC6 (6dS/m) obtained by adding sea water. In term of growth, an increase of the EC level of applied irrigation water reduced significantly the plant-s height, leaf area, fresh and dry weight measured at vegetative, flowering and maturity stage for all varieties. Even with the application of the EC6, yields were relatively higher in comparison with the once obtained in normal cultivation conditions. A significant accumulation of nitrate, chloride and sodium in soil layers during the crop cycle was noted. The use of treated waste water for its irrigation is proved to be possible. The variety A211 had showed to be less sensitive to salinity stress and it could be more promising its introduction to study area.
Abstract: The Platform Screen Doors improve Indoor Air Quality
(IAQ) in the subway station; however, and the air quality is degraded
in the subway tunnel. CO2 concentration and indoor particulate matter
value are high in the tunnel. The IAQ level in subway tunnel degrades
by increasing the train movements. Air-curtain installation reduces
dusts, particles and moving toxic smokes and permits traffic by
generating virtual wall. The ventilation systems of the subway tunnel
need improvements to have better air-quality. Numerical analyses
might be effective tools analyze the flowfield inside the air-curtain
installed subway tunnel. The ANSYS CFX software is used for steady
computations of the airflow inside the tunnel. The single-track subway
tunnel has the natural shaft, the mechanical shaft, and the PSDs
installed stations. The height and width of the tunnel are 6.0 m and 4.0
m respectively. The tunnel is 400 m long and the air-curtain is installed
at the top of the tunnel. The thickness and the width of the air-curtain
are 0.08 m and 4 m respectively. The velocity of the air-curtain
changes between 20 - 30 m/s. Three cases are analyzed depending on
the installing location of the air-curtain. The discharged-air through
the natural shafts increases as the velocity of the air-curtain increases
when the air-curtain is installed between the mechanical and the
natural shafts. The pollutant-air is exhausted by the mechanical and the
natural shafts and remained air is pushed toward tunnel end. The
discharged-air through the natural shaft is low when the air-curtain
installed before the natural shaft. The mass flow rate decreases in the
tunnel after the mechanical shaft as the air-curtain velocity increases.
The computational results of the air-curtain installed tunnel become
basis for the optimum design study. The air-curtain installing location
is chosen between the mechanical and the natural shafts. The velocity
of the air-curtain is fixed as 25 m/s. The thickness and the blowing
angles of the air-curtain are the design variables for the optimum
design study. The object function of the design optimization is
maximizing the discharged air through the natural shaft.
Abstract: In this paper, Selective Adaptive Parallel Interference Cancellation (SA-PIC) technique is presented for Multicarrier Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (MC DS-CDMA) scheme. The motivation of using SA-PIC is that it gives high performance and at the same time, reduces the computational complexity required to perform interference cancellation. An upper bound expression of the bit error rate (BER) for the SA-PIC under Rayleigh fading channel condition is derived. Moreover, the implementation complexities for SA-PIC and Adaptive Parallel Interference Cancellation (APIC) are discussed and compared. The performance of SA-PIC is investigated analytically and validated via computer simulations.
